Missing Xsan Preference Pane in 10.7 Server

I'm running 10.7 Server on a Mac Mini Server, and the Xsan preference pane is missing from system preferences. Meaning, I can't configure it as the metadata controller. Am I missing something?
Thanks!

Ok, so I am an idiot. <crickets chirping>
Ok so no new's flash there.  Apparently no universe either..."on own, on own....".
Here is my problem...
Here is the solution...
And there are the triangle thingies again...the visual cue I was missing was the tiny little label shown below circled in blue.
Oh well...I'm now less dum. Until next time, universe...over and out.

  • Xsan missing from preference pane

I do not know if this is related but yesterday I installed Yosemite on my computer. Today I noticed that my server drive was not showing on my desktop. This was the first time using the server drive so I'm not sure if it went missing immediately after installing Yosemite. In the past this normally meant that the drive got unmounted and I just go into Xsan and mount the drive again. This time when I went into System Preferences, Xsan is no longer there. I restarted and reconnected everything and nothing happens. I show that the Fibre is connected  by looking in the Fibre Channel Pane in System Preferences.
Now what is weird is I did some research and one guy's forum post said you can manually load Xsan by doing the following in my terminal:sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.xsan.plist
I did this and now the drive is mounted on my computer, BUT the XSan pane still does not show in my System Preferences. Even though I have access now to the drive I would still like to figure this out. Any ideas? Thank you

The Xsan pref pane does not exist in Yosemite. If you need to manually mount a volume on a client system, you can do "sudo xsanctl mount VolumeName". Same with unmount.
If your MDCs are on Yosemite, then you can download a profile from Server.app -> Xsan and install it on the Xsan client. That will configure and enable Xsan and mount your volumes.
If your MDCs aren't on Yosemite, then you may find that a Yosemite client can still mount the volume, but it will not be manageable in Xsan Admin. Also, that would not be a supported configuration. See Xsan: Compatibility of Xsan metadata controllers (MDCs) and clients.

  • Fresh 10.4 install - missing Classic preference pane

Just did a fresh install of 10.4 on a PPC eMac and the Classic Preference Pane is missing in System Prefs. Need to get it back as we use Classic for a few things. What am I missing here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi prefuse13!
Exactly which model eMac is it?
    What is the Processor speed?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What was the original version of OS X, that was pre-installed, when the eMac was manufactured?
Was Tiger 10.4.x previously installed on the eMac?
If so, was the Classic preference pane available?
When you performed the Erase & Install, which system disc was used, the original system disc, or the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD?

  • Missing Firewall Preference Pane

    Hi there,
Have an issue that is somewhere between strange and concerning.
I cannot see the Firewall tab on the machine's own Security Pref Pane - as in the tab isn't even there, just General and Filevault.
Concerns me that this may indicate malevolent activity. Tried altering Server Prefs in case that hid the machine's tab, but no joy.
Would rather confirm that it isn't the result of an attack, though ClamXav shows nothing. Would also rather not have to reinstall the OS.
    Any pointers or advice?
    Thanks.

If you're on Mac OS X Server here and not on Mac OS X client (and given the occasional client question does get posted here in the server forums), then the server firewall is managed with Server Admin and not with the System Preferences pane.
And FWIW, I've had various problems with the Server Preferences pane and prefer to use Server Admin here and not the Server Preferences mechanisms. If you're new to managing an Mac OS X Server box, then Server Admin and Workgroup Manager are your new best friends here; you'll be using these tools for various tasks.
I'd also recommend not connecting a Mac OS X Server box directly to the internet; using a firewall. While that direct connection can and does work, your [servers will end up on the receiving end of dictionary attacks|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11335576] and pretty much anything else that some denizens of the Internet can throw at your box.
An external firewall isn't a panacea, but it keeps some of the load off the box, and it also avoids cases where you accidentally reconfigure something and open a port, or when installed software has a vulnerability. An external firewall effectively forces you to connect to and configure allowed traffic at the firewall, rather than on the server; you have to explicitly choose to open a port.

  • Startup Disks missing from Preference Pane - Help!

I have my Macbook partitioned with boot camp and I can start up in both Windows or OSX by holding down the option key and I get to choose my system.
However, in my preference pane for Startup disk, they only option that appears is Network Startup. Neither OSX or Windows appears there. This has only occurred since the last update. I haven't changed anything in my system in months.
So I now have to wait for an extra 2 min or so, while the macbook searches the network for a bootable drive before it finally decides to start in OSX.
Anyone have any ideas how to get my drives back in the Startup Disk preference pane?
Any help you can provide would be welcome.
    Thanks.

Oh, I wish that had worked, but unfortunately they do not appear with any other user either.
I really don't want to do a complete reinstall of both systems. I hope I can figure out another way to fix this.

  • (missing) ichat preferences pane?

    hi there,
since installing leopard on my iMac G4 (PPC) — which was previously running 10.3 - i have been experiencing problems with ichat. Namely, when I click on Preferences, I get just one window with general settings. See photo here — http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4329/screenshot2ak7.jpg.
On the other hand, iChat on my Powerbook, which is still running 10.4, shows tabs such as "accounts," "messages," "alerts," and "video" when I click on preferences.
Is my Leopard iChat preferences window normal?

    Ahh.
I can see what they have done.
In most other Apps when you have a ToolBar as well as the red amber and green buttons to the top left there is normally a White/clear/uncloured oblong type button to the right.
This button is not there in the iChat Preferences pane.
The fix is to delete com.apple.ichat.plist in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences
    Restart iChat.
    This will lose:
Saved Transcripts setting, Saved Status Messages, Font and Bubble Colour Choices, Sound Alerts, menu Bar icon setting that are visible and some others that are not.

  • Missing accounts preference pane

I recently transferred data to a new hard drive using the migration assistant.
Now the Accounts Preference Pane shows only a blank page. All else seems to work.
G4 Quicksilver with 10.4.8. I have repaired permissions and done a check on hard drive.

    Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Delete these 2 files and relaunch System Preferences. You may have to reset a few of your System Preferences.

  • Installation of Preferences Pane on remote Server OSX fails

On an OSXServer mini which I connect to with RDC, I am unable to install any Preference Pane programs such as Slink or Squeeze.
    I have full admin access to that machine, it's a dedicated database server, nothing exotic running on it, latest OS10.6.4, but I get the message;
"You can't open the xxx Preferences Pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preference pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer."
There is no mouse or screen connected to this mini, RDC access only.
The PrefPane icons become visible but remain greyed out.
Remote Management is activated in the ServerAdmin.
A very similar configuration hosted elsewhere gives no problem. Same settings, same RDC access, same OS.
At this point I'm at a loss. Clues anyone?
    TIA,
    Peter

The problem isn't the filesystem per se. It's bad software quality if pathnames defined wrong or multiple times with different notation. Often there is only one or two letters with the wrong upper or lower case. I guess in the current Flash installer this is the case. With the previous versions I had no problems.

My Mini isn't case sensitive, so I can't really say but I had two iMacs when I worked at Intuit that were case sensitive and they had all kinds of software installation issues. One of the Mac developers at Mountain View told me that Case Sesnitive shouldn't be chosen as a format except when a system is isolated and used as a testing server. For a workstation or home computer, it's a terrible choice for a setup.

  • Account preference pane missing

Running an iMac G5, OSX 10.4.6, 1GB RAM
I recently purchased a refurbished iMac. During setup I choose the move files from another computer (iBook G3 running OSX 10.4.6). This worked fine, moving my applications, documents and user information. I ran updates to bring the sytem to what was on the iBook. This was two days ago.
Now my Account preference pane is missing when you select System Preferences. I have no trouble logging in (was set on auto login), but I can't see the Account pane in System Preferences now to add another account.
Is there a way to bring back the Account Prefernce Pane selection to the System Preferneces screen?

    Hi Doris, try this:
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache and delete that file.
Then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist and delete that file.
Now relaunch system preferences. Let us know.

  • Missing user accounts in system preference pane 10.6.1?

(I hope this isn't posted under another topic already..)
After reading a post on another site about missing user data in Snow Leopard (http://bit.ly/3wf3v7), I decided to do a little digging on my own machine to see if I'm experiencing any of the same issues..
First of all I'm not readily experiencing any particular bugs since upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1, but I did notice the following:
-my usual admin user account (me) did not show any other user accounts on the machine in the system preference pane.
-I have fast user switching on, and when I select it the account name at the upper right corner of the screen, it shows all of the accounts that the sys pref pane does not.
-a quick look at my finder reveals on the root level that all of my user accounts are intact as well.
-I switched to another admin account on the machine, and it loaded up fine– upon opening the sys pref on the other admin account, I was able to see all of the other active accounts on the machine in the accounts pane.
-note: the guest account is deactivated, and I've not logged into a guest account since upgrading to 10.6.1.
So my question is: why doesn't my primary user account (obviously an admin account) see the other active accounts in my sys pref accounts pane, but my other admin accounts do? Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll need to make account changes from my user account in regards to the other user accounts and I'll need that functionality at that point.
-note: I've lost no data to my knowledge and I have a TM backup drive active.
Any thoughts from my fellow Mac Geniuses?

Creating an account named abc did not bring back my previous accounts. I had installed Snow Leopard on my iMac several months ago. My hard drive was damaged by SnowLeopard family pack install disk that I was using to update my daughter's Macbook on Friday. When I opened my Mac in target disk mode, there was no system folder on the hard drive. I started to install 10.5.8 so I could use my iMac-didn't get it finished before going to work. Bought a new Snow Leopard install disk on the way home, cancelled the uncompleted install of 10.5.8, and the iMac booted up like a new machine.
All my files are there, but the only user available is the one created while booting up. Migration assistant doesn't see the user accounts on the iMac hard drive.

  • MagicPrefs preference pane missing.

I use Lion on my MacBook. I also use MagicPrefs, but I can no longer use it because the preference pane is not there (in my library) I deleted MagicPrefs and downloaded it again, but stil I cannot use it because there is no magicprefs preference pane in my library. Can you please help me

Those items in preference panel come as default. Have you tried a Spotlight search for the items in the Pref Panel??
If nothing, then maybe something went wrong in the reinstall... I'd sugjest to do a new install but doing it as an archive / install. That way you don't loose any of your info and maintain your network prefs, docs, etc.

  • MobileMe Preference Pane missing

Where can I get the MobileMe preference pane if it's not showing up in my system preferences?
I have an iPod touch (which has MobileMe running just fine) and a MacBook (running OS 10.5.4 and MobileMe running just fine) and a mac desktop (also running 10.5.4, but no MobileMe pane!)
The instructions for MobileMe say to upgrade the OSX first, but I can't. I use the desktop for ProTools audio production, and can't afford to upgrade THAT software (I'm currently flat broke). For the version I have right now, it's not compatible with an OS higher than 10.5.4, so I'm not able to upgrade any higher. Is there ANOTHER way, besides upgrading the OS, to get the MobileMe pane onto this computer?

Have you got a pane called '.Mac'? - if so, that's it - the name hasn't been updated because you are technically using an earlier system than is compatible. It will still work, though you may find occasional oddities.

  • International Preferences Pane Missing

For no apparent reason, my international preferences pane (System Preferences) has disappeared. Just completely gone, and I need it!
Before I begin thinking about pulling out my OSX Snow Leopard install DVD, thought I would ask here:
Has anyone seen this before and found a quick fix?

Ummm...guess I hadn't tried to access those preferences in a long time and just answered my own question. In Snow Leopard, the Language and Text pane replaces the old International Pane.
I need more coffee this morning.....

  • Network System preferences pane missing

Went to adjust network preferences and unable to find network system pre. pane. May have deleted it accidently.
Do not have high speed connection so most of my updates from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 would have to be done all over again.
Is there better alternative than a total reinstall of the OS?
    Mac Mini 1.25   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Douglas,
Do you see a Network Preference Pane in your Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes Folder?
If not, it is probably gone and you can replace it by extracting the file from your Panther System Disk with Pacifist.
    ;~)
