Mission control changes layering of open documents

When I toggle between mission control desktop spaces, if I have multiple Word or Excel docs (may be true of others, but this is where I see it happen), when I return to the docs space a different document is on top but not selected, so I have to select the top doc then re-select the document I want. It's like the original doc remains on top virtually but not visually. If I toggle back and forth several times, a different doc may be on top each time. This practically kills the value of multiple spaces.
While I'm at it, I hate that opening a document in one space, say from an Outlook email attachment, the file opens in the same space as the originating document rather than switching to the space I've dedicated for the document app, such as Excel.
Do I have to give up using mission control or does someone have a fix?
Thanks!

Yes.  I used to get this problem.  Seems to have been largely fixed with 10.7.3.  I deleted all my desktops and started again.
There are still some bugs though.  For example, if you have an app with multiple windows open and then put it in full screen mode.  Command-tab doesn't take you to the primary window.
Also the keyboard shortcut to get a spotlight window results in a switch to the finder but doesn't display the finder window.

  • IMovie shows up in Mission Control, but doesn't open when clicked.

Can't open iMovie. iMovie shows up in Mission Control, but doesn't open when clicked. It just disappears up in the top left corner of the screen. The controls on the top of the screen (like; iMovie, File, Edit, View, Text, Share, etc) are al there, and they seem to work, but the window just won't show up.
It happened after installing Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro.
    Any ideas?

    Disable screen saver. Restart.

  • Documents visible in mission control but won't open

I am having difficulty accessing open files.
When I attempt to open a power point presentation from the Finder, power point opens, and I can see the file opening but then nothing appears.
When I then go to mission control I can see the images of all the power point presentations I've been working on, but when I try to click on any of them my desktop opens but none of the powerpoint files are there.
Does anyone have any idea how or where I have hidden them?
They are completely inaccessible right now, even though they are all visible in the mission control window.
    Thanks for any help!
I'm using a Macbook Air, Lion 10.7 and Office for Mac 2011

    Try this:
Right-click the Powerpoint icon in the dock and choose:
Options > Assign to Desktop > None

  • When I hit mission control can I have the document names put under each document?

This is what my mission control currently looks like
I want to have the names of the each peice of work. Because it would just make it a bit clearer to work out what I have got open.

Go to System Preferences > Mission Control and turn on Group windows by application. Also, if you have a trackpad, you can make a gesture to show the application windows and the most recent used documents. To do it, open System Preferences > More Gestures and look Exposé; then, take the cursor to the program you want to check the files and make the gesture

  • Apps show in mission control but won't open after it has gone to screen saver

I have three desk tops open on Mission Control, plus dash board. If I leave the computer and come back later and go to the desk top there is nothing there. When I click on the app it shows it is open, but just flashes and then it is gone. I have set the app, under options, to be on a particular desktop. I have to close out the app and reopen it to see it.

    Disable screen saver. Restart.

  • Swiping for Mission Control changes in Mavericks?

In Mountain Lion I can three finger swipe up to get to Mission Control, then without lifting my fingers from the trackpad swipe down to bring the screen back.  In Mavericks I have to lift my hand from the trackpad to get back out of Mission Control.  I cannot find a setting to change that behavior.  Is this an intentional change in Mavericks?  It's ashame if it is.
    Thanks.

I just played around with this again. I can swip back and forth with out picking up my fingers. However, it's more complexed than a simple "return swipe".
Swipe up for Mission Control. Then a swipe down and back up for normal.

  • How to change Switch between open documents keyboard shortcut (default Control + Tab or Cmd + ~)

I use Control + Tab and Control + Shift + Tab or Cmd + ~ and Cmd + Shift + ~ to switch between tab back and forth alot how do I change the shortcut to something else?
    On Photoshop CC 2014 mac

No, there isn't. you can't even set your own shor cut keys as you don't know what the documents will be named. Normally you can add short cuts keys but only for those menus options that already exist but your documents will change. I have searched for the answer earlier as I also want it.
There is in the Pages Help menu an option for  Keyboard shorcuts but nothing is mentioned ther about changing document windows.

  • How do I change what Firefox opens documents with so I can print them?

I used to print documents for work. The would show up in separate tabs across the top. I click on it and print. Now all the documents go to an arrow on the side and when Ipull them up they are in wordpad and jibberish. please help.

Could you describe this in a little more detail?
First, are you opening PDF documents from a website? If Firefox is automatically downloading them instead of displaying them, you may be able to change that setting. Please see this article for more information: [[View PDF files in Firefox without downloading them]].
Second, instead of clicking items on the download panel to open them, try clicking the folder icon on the right to open the folder they're in with the file highlighted. What kind of file does Windows say it is? If you right-click the file, do you have the option to open it in another program?
Third, if the problem comes after printing, make sure the checkbox for "Print to file" is NOT selected in the print dialog.

  • Dragging layers over open documents to the destination blanks them out

This has happened since CS5 I think.  When I select an area to copy into another document, I am so used to dragging it over to the destination document.  Sometimes I have more than one document open at a time and dragging over them blanks them out.  It's very very irritating.  Does anyone else have this issue?

I just did a fresh install of Windows 8 and Photoshop CS6 on a new disk to try and troubleshoot this issue that is actually still plaguing me.  I thought I had it solved by forcing Photoshop to use only one of my GPUs but after using it more and more the issue seemed to come back.  As you can see my video card drivers are UP TO DATE.  This is NOT a problem with my video card drivers bering out of date.
This issue only started with CS6 and has annoyed me through 2 of my PC configurations.  Please fix it.

  • Why is iTunes window open in every mission control window

I have a 27" iMac with the latest Mac OS and the latest version of iTunes. I have my iTunes library installed on an external Hard Drive. When I open iTunes, every mission control window has an open iTunes window? 10 screens 10 open iTunes windows? This is very annoying! How can I fix this so only one iTunes window is open on one mission control screen?

    Hey llsorens,
Thanks for the question.  Take a look at the resource for Mission Control below.  It sounds like in your Mission Control preferences, you have the options set to All Desktops, which means the application (iTunes) will appear in every space.
OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18757?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US
    Assign apps to spaces
If you assign an app to a particular space, it opens in that space by default.
Press and hold an app’s icon in the Dock. You may have to first open the app from Launchpad to see its icon in the Dock.
From the shortcut menu that appears, do one of the following:
Have the app open in the current space: Choose Options > This Desktop.
The app appears only in that space. However, if you open the app in full screen, it appears in its own space.
Have the app open in the current space on a specific display: Choose Options > Desktop on Display [number].
Have the app open in every space: Choose Options > All Desktops.
The app appears in every space.
Have the app open in whichever space you’re using at the time: Choose Options > None.
In Mission Control preferences, you can also specify that, when you switch to an app, your desktop should switch to a space with open windows for that app. To open Mission Control preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Mission Control.
    Hope that helps ...

  • What is the point of Mission Control?

I have been a Mac user since 1987, when I got my first SE/30.  I understand a LOT about the Mac OS, and I consider myself and expert. For the life of me, however, I cannot figure out the point of Mission Control (or Exposé or Spaces, for that matter).  Let me explain, and ask if anyone here can clear this up for me.
As I understand it, the point of Mission Control is to make it easy to access various open applications in an uncluttered workspace/desktop.  If this is the case, then how is this better than, say, Quickeys, which I have used forever?
In other words, I typically use the following applications, all open at the same time: Word, Mail, Safari, my office accounting program, iTunes, iChat, and maybe one or two more.  I use Quickeys and have assigned a keyboard shortcut for each - for example, control-E for mail; control-s for Safari; control-W for Word, etc.  It is second nature for me to immediately go to, say, Mail by pressing control-E.  Bringing the app to the front is literally instantaneous.
I "get it" that, say, Safari can show below Mail, or iTunes can show behind Word, but that (multiple windows partially overlappiong each other) has never bothered me - indeed, I've never even considered it something worthy of worry.
Thus, my question is, how does Mission Control do this - navigation of open applications - better than Quickeys? Is it simply and only to avoid the "behind the window clutter"?  If so, is the contortion needed to activate Mission Control - removing fingers from keyboard, clicking mouse, navigating mouse to proper desktop, and returning keys to keyboard - worth it? If so, how?  There has to be something else to this Mission Control that I am just missing.
Could one of you enlighten me?
    Thanks!

Different people have different ways of working and long ago I discovered the joys of virtual desktops (think mission control). Since System 7 (when the multi-finder stopped being optional) I've been keeping lots of programs open at the same time. The problem with that is the desktop gets very cluttered very fast and getting to the right window of the right program can be challenging. Thankfully between 3rd party tools and Apple's own built in tools we have many ways of dealing with this. Mission Control (virtual desktops) is one of them.
I have assigned related programs to a single desktop. I have the Programming Desktop where the terminal, BBedit, Racket, and Xcode tools live. I have the Writing Desktop where Pages, Word, and InDesign live. And so on. This cuts down on the clutter of my display since only a couple programs appear on a single virtual desktop. Where Mission Control itself comes into play is when I need to get a resource from one Desktop to another. Say I'm writing an email and need to refer back to a document in Word. I might open the document in Word (which would move me into the Writing Desktop) then I'd shift to Mission Control and drag that Word document's window into my Internet Desktop so it would temporarily reside along with Mail so I could look at both the Word document and my email.
It isn't the only way to work but I've found it very convenient and indispensible on my notebook. On my work desktop where I have two displays my workflow is a little different since I have lots of REAL window space.

  • OS X Lion's Mission Control is missing key features of Expose

Who else agrees that Apple has missed the mark with Mission Control? It's a seemingly good idea to categorize windows by application in Mission Control, but there is now no way of seeing ALL open windows at once. For instance, I usually have multiple windows open from a single appkication, such as Safari. In Mission Control, I can only view my Safari windows stacked on top of one another and have to click each window individually to see it. Apple, PLEASE bring back the all open windows view that Expose used to have. It is one if the most crucial tools for window management. Until then, I'm going back to Snow Leopard.
Who else agrees that Mission Control should show all open windows, without stacking them on top of one another?

I think some perhaps do not realize that many people miss the actual spaces in combination with exposé. It was quite powerful for those of us that need to constantly access and shift around multiple apps. While I understand there are many users that have adopted the pad mentality, I for one still use a Wacom tablet for everything—including browsing the web—as do many other professionals. Mission Control is a catastrophe for this, and generally for everything within my workflow. Photoshop follows every desktop I move to, which is super annoying, and is a prime example of how much of a joke mission control really is (blame adobe whatever...still horrible). But more importantly, I can drag an app to a desktop, but NOT from a desktop into my current desktop. This is fatal to productivity when working in programming, 3D, compositing, design, etc..
I am pleased to hear there could be some evolution taking place with Exposé; regardless of my personal views. Anything is better than what we have now.  A touch pad dominant environment may be the wave of OSX future to many, but to me it's only one step closer to soley using Linux based operating systems.
Sorry for the long post... Hopefully a few of you that have never worked in this way can see how it goes beyond just Exposé from certain perspectives... RIP spaces . Exposé is only partially as good without them imho. Open spaces > then exposé while in spaces mode > move one app to one space, another to another, put anything exactly where you want it, all without closing out—meanwhile being able to see literally every document/app perfectly clear.

  • Problem with Mission Control

I've just installed the Safari 6.1.1 and iTunes 11.1 updates. For some reason this seems to have affected Mission control on my computer (late 2011 Macbook pro running Mountain Lion).
I can now no longer highlight and select the large desktop window in Mission Control (the one that open apps appear above). This is really annoying as it makes navigating around much more of a hassle now.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried repairing Disk permissions already. Thanks.

I'm surprised that given the usual hysteria over anything new that Apple brings out Apple didn't realise that providing this upgrade solely via a downloading method may cause a few problems upon its release!!

  • HT4689 Can we make mission control not stack the windows of the same app?

I often have multiple Word windows open and it's very hard to find the one I need when they are stacked in Mission Control. I like the fact that with a four-finger swipe you can see all the open programs, but it's not quite useful if apps are stacked (so I can't find which is which), and minimized apps apps are not shown.
In comparison, MS Windows makes it easier to locate an open program although less fancy-looking.

    Hi keclear,
If you would prefer that Mission Control not stack the open windows for each application, you may want to turn off the "Group windows by application" setting. You may find the following article helpful:

  • App Expose and Mission Control in Lion

Several people have posted, confused by how App Expose works. I hope to clarify the function of App Expose and Mission Control.
    APP EXPOSE
App Expose in Lion works differently than Expose did in Snow Leopard.
App Expose is intended to show all open windows from the same application.
Expose used to show all open windows from all applications.
To test App Expose in Lion, open two (or more) separate windows in Safari (or any application). Three-finger swipe down on your trackpad and App Expose will reveal your two (or more) open Safari windows.
    MISSION CONRTOL
In Lion, the most similar thing to the old Expose (from Snow Leopard) is the new Mission Control.
To test Mission Control, open several applications. Three-finger swipe up on your trackpad and Mission Control will reveal all open applications, dashboard and spaces. If you have multiple windows open in a single applications (like three separate Safari windows, for example), MIssion Control groups those same-app windows together.

Mission Control ended years of divergent attempts to manage windows and widgets, consolidating Expose, Dashboard, and Spaces into a new Mac interface.
