Mission Control in Clamshell Mode
When using mission control in clamshell mode it sometimes shows me the my background from my laptop behind the background that I have for my monitor that is connected to my laptop. It also shows me a blank linen notification center outline where it would be if I went to use it. All of this appears when I enter mission control while in Clamshell Mode. Any Ideas on how to fix this?
It may also be worth noting that the network will die out eventually after two displays have been initiated. As soon as I unplug the Thunderbolt > DVI adapter the wifi will kick back in and work as usual.

Mission Control - What a horrible experience
First off, I am a long time OSX user dating back to the initial release.
Each iteration of the the OS has generally built upon the features of the prior version, and usually included new, exciting, usable features.
Mission Control in Lion adds some new functionality for workspace and application window management. It's another way to get around.
Apple's mistake? Removing Expose and Spaces.
Has a single solitary person at Apple actually used Mission Control on a dual display setup? No - Let me rephrase - I mean have they actually *used* it to get anything done?
While in Mission Control, I can't move a window from the right display to the left? Really? What were you thinking, Apple?
While in Mission Control, I can't see which display on the left goes with which display on the right? How am I supposed to quickly move a window to the right monitor for an application shown on a left monitor? No - Really - Try it.
While in Mission Control, I can't see all of my application windows - Just some lame (and I mean LAME) stack of a couple of windows for the application. Yes, I know I can swipe and see a little bit more, but I can never see all of them.
Expose and Spaces could handle ALL of that above, and did it logically, and without any fuss.
Mission Control isn't just "inconvenient", it is downright painful!
Please - Please - Please - Put the option of Expose and Spaces back. Mission Control may be "cool" for some configurations (laptops, etc), but for those of us who use OSX daily to get work done, it takes a multi-display Mac and makes it useless.
Oh - And full screen apps? Did ANYONE at Apple test that idea on dual display Macs? Did you happen to notice that the full screen app makes the second monitor a fancy paperweight?I agree too.
This is what I've sent to https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Feel free to use portions of the text to send your own feedback.
Takes just a few seconds and probably helps to improve Mission Control. At least we have no other chance of pushing things.
Dear Apple,
having used Apple Systems since OS 7, it is a real pain to see, what you have done to the usability of Mac OSX with the switch to Mission Control.
Has anyone of your engineers ever tried to use Mission Control on a dual display setup? I don't think so, otherwise you immediately should have realized, how broken it is:
• You can't move a window from one display to the other.
• You can't move windows between desktops. Instead you first have to go to each source desktop and move the windows from there to your destination desktops.
• Usually you think in "dual display desktops" not in individual left and right desktops. The organization in Spaces, showing left and right display side by side, was logical. In Mission Control you permanently have to match left and right displays of a desktop by reading the desktop number or even worse count their position, aka. 3rd desktop from left.
• You can't use your second display in full screen mode as it only shows a gray pattern. Unbelievable!
I admit, Mission Control and Fullscreen Mode have their place on a MacBook Air, but for a big screen, dual display setup they are completely useless in their actual state.
Currently reverting back to Snow Leopard is the only way to work efficiently with a dual display setup due to these flaws in Mission Control.
I dearly ask you to bring back Spaces to Lion or bring over the missing functionality of Spaces to Mission Control, before Snow Leopard becomes unsupported by current software.
I'm really disappointed, that even in 10.7.2 none of these issues are addressed. -
Clamshell Mode Question - Yosemite - Volume Controls on External Keyboard
Forum,
I was wondering if it was possible while in clamshell mode to, instead having to use the remote on the TV to adjust volume controls, but rather use the external board to control the TV's volume controls?
Obviously when I change the output device to the Macbook Pro the speakers kick on, a lot lower than the TV of course, but the external keyboard picks back up the volume control scroller. Again when I switch it back to the TV the TV speakers kick back on.
I am using a Macbook Pro (Late 2011) on Yosemite 10.10.1.
Using a HDMI adapter to connect to the TV, and the keyboard is the Corsair Gaming keyboard.
Thanks in advance! Here is what worked for me. My scrolling on the mighty mouse and a few buttons on my wireless keyboard weren't working properly. I reset the SMC, a link explaining the process is below. Hope it helps you too!

Mission control animates in the wrong direction when you start in full screen mode
When I am in fullscreen mode, open mission control, and swipe left to right the animation moves in the wrong direction. The correct space appears, but it animates as if I swiped right to left. All subsequent swipes work correctly until I close mission control and follow the same steps again.
Whats going on?Go into system prefs trackpad then uncheck scroll direction.

After a recent OS update, Clamshell mode quit working. I couldn't find any Apple documentation
that would help. So many people were stabbing around in the dark, until I finally found the following information
that is lacking from any Apple documentation that I've been able to find.
Here's what I found to be the most helpful:
Forcing a MacBook to use the External Monitor:
I tried about everything: Rebooting, switching off completely, removing and inserting the Thunderbolt->HDMI adapter etc.
The only thing that finally worked was the following:
1. Take it out of the dock and connect to Power and HDMI to the TV.
Shut down the Mac. Turn it on and close the lid. It will now boot up on the external screen.
Log onto the Mac, and put it in sleep mode (Option-Command-Eject).
Put it back into the dock and wake it up with the spacebar.
It should be OK now... until the next update...
Note: One indication that you’re going to have extreme trouble with this is when (occasionally and without reason) the Mirroring Options icon shows up on the top icon bar.
Other useful commands:
“Command + F1” puts PC in Two-Screen MIRROR mode.
If it’s REALLY being stubborn, do the following (Clamshell Must be open
to see the arrangement tab.):
In System Preferences > Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor (Yes, I know, it’s hard to grab ahold of it...) That will make your EXTERNAL monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV, make sure it’s asleep (Option+Command+Eject buttons) or your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook. After a recent OS update, Clamshell mode quit working. I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite.I did not shut down the computer last night. When I opened the computer this morning Dashboard in overlay was on the screen. I have not been able to get out of dashboard. I have tried esc, F12, and accessing System Preferences in the Dock. I clicked on Mission control and nothing changed. Help be get back to my desktop.
Did you try restarting the computer?
Delete com.apple.dashboard.plist file.
Quit all applications.
Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the drop down.
Library > Preferences > com.apple.dashboard.plist
Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".
Restart.
If this doesn’t help, Put back the com.apple.dashboard.plist
Right click the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.
Right click the com.apple.dashboard.plist and select “Put Back”. -
Is it possible to show the dock bar only in mission control mode?
Hi.
I dont wont to have the dock in my workspace. Can I move the dock to mission control an launch apps from there?
tx
mitschelYou could however maybe trick the Dock by setting the delay rate to some high number, say one hour.
In terminal copy and paste:
defaults write com.apple.Dock autohide-delay -float 3600.00 && killall Dock
To restore the default behavior, enter:
defaults delete com.apple.Dock autohide-delay && killall Dock

How can I fix Dock/Mission Control/Launchpad? (Glitch)
General Description
Mission Control and Launchpad glitch when invoked (whether by using the mouse or trackpad gesture). They seems to crash or quit, and then relaunch themselves (/itself - all the same app?), I know this because:
they both, as well as Dock, become unresponsive;
the desktop background images disappear temporarily (being replaced by blank light or dark grey);
the Mission Control animation stops/freezes and does not execute properly (the windows stay still);
Dock becomes unresponsive as well as Launchpad.
This happens a lot (every other invokation) and seems to be random; it's annoying and is ruining my workflow, since I am a heavy user of multiple desktops.
Behaviour
I usually have over ten desktops, all with active apps open at one time; when it glitches I can't even open or switch applications, though I can use the ones that are on the current desktop (if was trying to use Mission Control).
There is no correlation with the glitch and the amount of applications open, or how much RAM or CPU is active (still happens with only a few light apps open and a few desktops).
It does not matter whether I am using more than one monitor, the glitch still occurs.
It does not happen due to a particular open application, as I have tested with nothing open at all straight after a restart.
Possible and tested causes
An application might be corrupting the glitchy app(s), since the disk breaks after being repaired in Safe Boot mode. Once the disk has been repaired, the glitch doesn't seem to occur until a few applications have been opened, though I haven't tested this much. (I am suspecting TheBrain, but not sure. Other potential culprits: Chrome, Mail, Firefox, Spotify, Skype, Dictionary, Activity Monitor, Finder).
It isn't the operating system itself because I have reinstalled it from Safe Boot mode, and yet the glitch persists.
The application(s) affected by the glitch may be corrupted, and need reinstalled - that is, if they weren't already by reinstalling the operating system (they are in the '/System/CoreServices' folder).
Not-so-possible:
I doubt it is a virus - it would be a pretty pointless glitch for one to cause.
I have Time Machine running most of the time, but I have no reason to believe that is the cause.
I am using a NEET mini display port to HDMI adapter for my second monitor (no idea how that could be causing the issue).
Help
Any ideas on what I could do to fix this?
And does anyone know how to reinstall Mission Control, Dock and Launchpad (I think they are all part of '/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app')? This might be worth a try.
Specifications (just in case)
2010 Macbook Pro
2.8 GHz Intel i7

Thanks for any help! One thing I'd like for you to try: Create a new user account. Log into the new account and see if the same problems persist.
Many times such crashes are the result of corrupted preference or cache files. The above will eliminate these in the user account but not at the system level. So, I suggest you use a utility such as Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.11 or Purity 1.10 to clear out cache files at the system level. I've never used the latter software but I, personally, use the former one on my computers. -
I recently logged in to my mac and while the finder relaunched it got frozen and is now gray. The dock does not show up or work. The launchpad doesnt work nor does mission control. I can only open applications from a finder window. The apps dont even work in fullscreen. Ive tried restarting it, logging in to another account, and booting in safe mode. None work. I will try to move my things to my other computer for the time.
What should I do?Run through this list of fixes, if your getting in do #9 as soon as possible.

Can I Share Specific Mission Control Desktop?
I am looking to share only a specific Mission Control desktop on another Mac. I am including a screenshot graphic because it's difficult to describe.
As you can see, I have 4 Mission Control desktops, and want to screen share the red one only with a different Mac.
Does anyone know how this might be done, or recommend an extension that could facilitate this?
Mac OS 10.7.5 Lion.
Thanks.Try target disk mode:

Other wise use a USB thumb drive or a HDD to transfer them.

Dock frequently crashes and restarts when entering Mission Control
Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster here. Hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I am running Mac OS X Lion (10.8) on a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 24" iMac with 12 GB RAM. Peripherals include Apple wired keyboard, Apple Magic Trackpad, Logitech G9x laser mouse, and a Seagate USB External Hard Drive, and an old Dell 17" LCD (E177FP) connected as a second monitor.
Throughout the day, I work with Adobe Photoshop, Abode Indesign, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, BB Edit, Cyberduck, iTunes, Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, Terminal, Text Edit, Screen Sharing, Microsoft Excel 2011, Microsoft Word 2011, and additional applications across eight desktops in Mission Control (for a total of 16 screens, with the two diaplays).
Approximately 6-12 times a day Mission Control will become unresponsive while entering it, whether by using four-finger swipe up on trackpad, mouse button 4 on Logitech mouse, or control + up arrow on keyboard. I can still move the mouse cursor, type in applications, and click on applications. However, the dock relaunches (all of my minimized windows at restored to my screen) and then Mission Control is responsive again. The window of unavailability is about 10 seconds.
I have used Macs for years now and never before have I had to deal with such a minor (yet frequent) inconvenience. They have always "just worked."
I am including my most recent crash report and am hoping that someone will have a solution that doesn't involve installing the operating system from scratch.
Thank you for your time.
Joe

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
How to get clamshell mode with Windows 7 on Macbook Pro?
Hi,
I am running Windows 7 on Macbook Pro using bootcamp. In OS-X, I can use this cool clamshell feature wherein after putting the MBP to sleep by closing the lid, as soon as I connect an external keyboard, mouse & monitor, I get the display on the monitor and immediately start using the keyboard & mouse too, converting the laptop instantaneously to a desktop.
I am trying to do the same thing on Windows 7, close the lid of the laptop to put it to sleep, connect my external monitor, mouse & keyboard, but however the laptop never wakes up (even after moving the mouse & pressing keys in the keyboard). I tried several things in Windows 7. Under Power Options, Disabled "selective Suspend of USB", but that did not help. Next, in the "Device Manager", for the "Root USB Hub" & "Generic USB Hub", I tried to set "Allow this device to wake up the computer", under Properties -> Power Management, but that option is grayed out. I tried to experimented with Sleep types like S1, S2, S3, but except for S3, the other two are shown as "not supported by firmware" (using powercfg option in command line). Countless hours wasted on google search to get this working with no success
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.
Thanks,
Sri@mkultraviolent,
Thanks for the quick reply.
That seems to be a useful workaround, but I do not find the option mentioned in Display/ Nvidia control panel. However, I find an option in the "Power Options" which has a "Do Nothing" option in the combo box to select what "Closing the Lid" does. Is that what u are referring to?
Also, one problem in this approach is, if we do not sleep when the display is closed, that will keep the internal display (laptop's display) running in clamshell mode even after the lid is closed? (which will heat up the laptop badly).
The exact option I am looking for is, while the laptop is in sleep & lid closed state, connecting the external keyboard/mouse/monitor and pressing a key in the keyboard or moving the mouse should wake the computer from sleep. If this happens, the internal display won't be running. I am able to achieve this in OS-X.
In Windows7, I have a workaround by which I can almost achieve this result, wherein, while the laptop is in lid-closed, sleeping state, after connecting the external devices (keyboard/mouse/monitor), I open the laptop's lid for a fraction of second, quickly move my finger over the touchpad & close the lid again. This wakes up the laptop, & while it is waking up, Windows realizes that the lid is closed and that external devices are connected and gets into clamshell mode (I have verified that in this state, the internal display is not running).
This workaround was fine so far, but I got this hengedocks docking station for my macbook, and I am no longer able to use the workaround, because, after plugging my macbook into the docking station, I cannot open the lid. So, the only option is to make Windows7 realize that external devices are connected & wake up on external keyboard stimuli (Hence the question).
If my question is not clear, this video kind of explains what I want to achieve:

So sick of this - Creative Cloud in OSX Mission Control
I'd like to summarize this problem briefly, and only briefly because I know adobe is already "aware of this issue and working on fixing it" (Adobe 2013) because of tons of other posts about this. You see, I am, like many other poor, tortured human beings, subscribed to the Creative Cloud service. One of the many problems with that is, when I switch desktops on my mac, the creative cloud window pops up. In addition, it shows up in my Mission Control even though its not even open or a traditional application in the first place. This wouldn't be a huge problem if not for 2 reasons.
A. This is a small issue that is EASILY fixable for Adobe that affects me constantly
B. I pay $50 a month for this.
Also, I know about the tweak where you switch it to windowed mode, which is just as bad because it shows up in my dock for some reason and even forgets that I've switched to windowed mode. I'd like to mention also that this is not strictly speaking, an error. This happens on EVERY Mac that has Creative Cloud installed as far as I can tell. It has happened since I first downloaded the software OVER A YEAR AGO. I mean there are posts dating back to 2013 by Adobe employees saying they're going to fix this.
I just think it's weird how I bought an app for a dollar the other day that gives me system stats from the menu bar, and it has exactly none of these problems, yet I give you people $50 a month and I can't expect a fraction of the quality.
TLDR: I'm considering admitting myself because I've been having thoughts of switching to Inkscape.I may have not read your post correctly. In the pinned mode, the CC Desktop window does not show up when I switch workspaces, and it does not show up in Mission Control, at least not on my Macbook (10.9.5) Might act differently in your setup.
I would suggest quitting the CC app until you need it, but you might be using your Typekit, Portfolio and Storage and can't simply exit.
However clicking on the CC Cloud Storage icon in your Finder will bring it back up instantly.
Sorry. For a second, I thought I had a workaround.

Clamshell mode in bootcamp not "sticking"
MBP 15'' with bootcamp.
Latest Bootcamp drivers installed
Minidisplayport-to-DVI adapter in.
I open the laptop. boot Windows, I see the image on the laptop screen AND on the external monitor. When I'm at the "ctrl-alt-del" screen I try and close the laptop to go into clamshell. No dice.
I open it again, log into windows, wait for all the systems to start, try again. Nope.
I open it once again, go to "Control Panel", then "Change what closing the lid does", I change NOTHING (the setting is already on "do nothing"), click "apply", then close the lid and voilà... clamshell mode.
It's getting on my nerves... any chance someone had the same problem?
Thank youI had clamshell mode working under Windows 8.0 Enterprise on my 2015 MBP 13 Retina. I could close the lid while running Windows 8.0 and then wake up the MBP using the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and it would drive the two connected external HD monitors.
I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise and the wake from sleep in clamshell mode no longer works with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, trackpad or mouse. I've just used worryingroadworrier's suggestion and I can close the lid and the MBP now drives both the connected external HD monitors while the lid display remains off. Wake from sleep using the keyboard, etc., still doesn't work but my goal was to be able to use both external displays.
Thanks to worryingroadworrier and also thru_the_loop (on http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/running-windows-anything-else-your-mac/222848-h ow-get-clamshell-mode-windows-7-macbook-…) for their suggestions. -
My Mission Control is not working. Any help?
Everytime I click in Mission control in the Dock it does nothing, it seems like is disabled.
But when I swipe down with 4 fingers my opened windows appears, except the Desktops.
Help please.
Thanks!Software Issues - Troubleshooting
Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.
