Mission control "Middle mouse button" shortcut conflict?

I am trying to set the preference shortcut for mission control to Middle Mouse Button. When doing so I get a yellow triangle that says "This mouse button settings conflicts with the settings for another mouse button". The shortcut still works even with the error message. I can't find this button being used anywhere else in system settings. Any ideas on how to find out what the conflict is? Sort of silly it doesn't tell you on the warning tool tip.
Thanks.

I know this is an old problem, but I have spent several hours on several occasions searching the Internet, and I never could find the solution. So I did some digging and testing, and I'm posting the solution for the benefit of others who are still trying to find an answer.
Move the files com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist and com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist.lockfile (if present) from your *user*/Library/Prefrences folder to the trash, then log out and back in. Problem solved.
*Note that this will reset your other user-defined keyboard shortcuts to default.
To get to that folder in Lion or Mountain Lion, from the Finder hold option while clicking on the menu Go, then select Library. Open the Preferences folder, and the offending files will be there.
I was looking for a solution because I have been having trouble with my MBP where often when I click the middle mouse button or use the four finger swipe up to bring up Mission Control, the desktop would go to gray briefly as though it were reloading, and Dashboard would quit. This would happen several times a day, and it was getting annoying. I thought that the button conflict perhaps was causing that problem. It now seems fixed, but I'll need a few days to know for sure. Anyway, the button conflict is gone.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:

EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. It hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla yet, so it won't be an automatic update for another day or two. All credit to "cannonfodder" below for noticing this; please mark his post as helpful!

  • Middle mouse button does not function for Firefox Tab browsing when cetain programs are running.

My Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 middle button is set in Firefox to open and close tabs. (In Control Panel, Mouse, Firefox is the only program exception and the Wheel button is set to middle-click instead of the default Instant Viewer).
When vlc media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) is running and at some point viewed in full screen, the middle mouse button reverts in Firefox to the default Instant Viewer. When vlc is closed, tab operation once again works.
The same thing happens if MWSnap screen capture (http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html) is running.

Very glad to see I am not alone. Alas....that answer did nothing on my system. I also am very very frustrated that, all of a sudden, my middle mouse button brings up a weird four pointed arrow! (see pic) I NEED it to open links in tabs for researching!!
I turned off auto scrolling in the advanced settings. Restarted FF even...and nada.
I have disabled every single add on I had (only like 6 of them)...and nothing.
This happened all the sudden...I dont even know of an update. FF v3.6.10

  • Middle Mouse Button Issue

I have an Intellimouse Optical 5 button mouse and I've installed the Microsoft Driver to control the side buttons and the side left right buttons. The issue I am having is with the middle mouse button. I've set it to "Scroll" in the software and when I click it, nothing happens. I like the setting where if I use the middle mouse button on a link, it opens a new tab and when on a blank space in Safari, I can scroll up and down quickly. I've looked at all of the options. Any suggestions?

No answers. I just use it to open new tabs, but still have not found a way to fast scroll.

  • Middle mouse button

    Hello,
I have a Logitech MX Air mouse. It does not have a middle mouse button, which I would be glad to have.
There's a touch scroll between the left and right mouse buttons. In both ends of this touch scroll is also buttons to scroll up and down. Meaning there's an actual button between left and right mouse buttons in addition to touch scroll.
On Windows I had Logitech's own control panel to change the actions of the buttons. The "Scroll down"-button on the touch scroll was set as a middle mouse button. So, there's the button and it is possible to distinguish between scrolling down on the touch scroll and pressing this scroll down -button.
On linux, however, trying to set the scroll down -button as a middle mouse also sets scrolling down on the touch pad to middle mouse.
What would be the proper approach to change only the scroll down -button to behave as a middle mouse button without affecting scrolling down on the touch pad?

Edit: Since there is no real distinction between scrolling and pressing the button, it could be problematic.
This isn't 100% right but in most cases you are right. Xinput 2 in 2011 implemented smooth scrolling which isn't based on button events.
I want to highlight that because i have been interested about my wacom tablet, and why it is scrolling in granularized way and now i know, there is hope - driver is just outdated. Wacom driver is using buttons to handle scroll event. Hopefully it handle many touches(i think it's over 5). So, what we need is external application* which would be able to handle gestures. I've found one.. but it isn't the best one: touchegg. It lacks zoom on pinch, rotating gesture etc. but it is scrolling smooth with wacom tablet. Touchegg is abandoned(?), or very slowly developed. It is using ga GEIS C Api - [=URL=]

  • What to do when you have no middle mouse button

I usually use my middle mouse button. However I'm away from home and office using somebody's MacBook and they have the old style USB mouse (no middle button). Is there any keyboard shortcut to use with the mouse that will do the same as the middle button (button 3)?

Pastes things into my remote PC onto something called Exceed. The old apple+V won't work because the Exceed won't let you ctrl+V into it. The only way I have ever done it is using the middle button by clicking down on it.
I know, not the norm but I'm stuck!

  • Dragging with the Middle mouse button down should move the viewport.

Just like it says in the title: I believe that dragging with the Middle mouse button down should move the viewport, just like using the hand tool. Would be very handy for people still using a mouse. This can be hacked together using SetPoint (or similar software), but it doesn't work perfectly. Photoshop should've had it for a very long time, as the middle mouse button could be used to move around documents in other applications (web browsers, word processors, other graphics programs) for years.

I've never had that happen with Firefox 4 on WinXP. I haven't updated my Netbook that runs Ubuntu to Firefox 4 yet.
    1. Try disabling the Java Console 6.0.24 and the Java Quick Starter 1.0 extensions and see if that solves your middle-click problem.
    2. Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • I used to be able to open links in a new tab by clicking my middle mouse button, but now that I've updated it to the most recent update it doesn't work anymore. How do I fix this? I really love that feature. It works in IE and Chrome but not Mozilla.

Ok, I used to be able to open links up in a new Tab using my middle mouse button. However, I updated firefox with the automatic Updates on the 26th of October and now I no longer can open links with my middle mouse button. Why? I use this feature just about every time I go searching on the internet so I really would like it back. I couldn't find anything that it was related to in the options so I turn this over to you guys.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • Why is it that sometimes when I use my middle mouse button to click on a link to open it in a new tab I will have it open it in an entirely new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab?

Occasionally when I click on a link with my middle mouse button, instead of opening the page in a new tab, it will open a new instance of Firefox.
I've looked through some of the settings and I wasn't able to find anything. It really gets to be bothersome at times because I prefer things to be in tabs instead of a new browser.

It's not specific sites. I can middle-click on the same link 50 times and it will open it in a new tab 45 times and 5 of those times, it will randomly open it in an entirely new window. I don't know what's causing this.
It happens so randomly that I don't know how to pin-point what it could be.

  • How do I change what the middle mouse button/wheel does?

I feel like an idiot asking this, but I can't figure this out...
I've plugged in a bog standard 2 button + scroll wheel third button mouse, but I can't get the middle mouse button/wheel to behave like it would in Windows.  If I click it, it changes programs, hold it it brings up the task switcher thing.  It's like I'm pressing command + tab.
I want it to work normally, where the program I'm using the middle button responds, not the OS.  Like in Firefox, I want to be able to close tabs with the middle mouse button, and open new links with it...instead all it can do is switch programs.
Is there a way to do this?  Am I missing something obvious?

Err...I don't know what happened, but I rebooted and now it's working like normal (knock on wood!).  Noooo idea how it ended up in that state!

  • How can I get the middle mouse button to work with the toolbar button?

Yesterday firefox stopped responding to middle-mouse clicks made in the bookmarks toolbar. Middle mouse buttons still work in web pages.

    Hi,
Please check if this happens in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode]. Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''General''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u '''Use hardware acceleration when available''']. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme, option or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad Compact USB Keyboard with Trackpoint: Middle mouse button and scrolling

    I got this keyboard (KU-1255).
Unfortunately, it generates bogus mouse button events if I click the middle mouse button and use the trackpoint:
With "thinkpad scrolling mode" disabled, the middle mouse button is released as soon as I move the trackpoint while still pressing the button!
Expected behaviour: The middle mouse button is pressed, the event created. Moving the trackpoint moves the cursor normally. Releasing the middle button creates a corresponding event.
With "thinkpad scrolling mode" enabled, the button is registered as pressed, then scrolling occurs as I move the trackpoint and the button is released if I release it.
Expected behaviour: No middle mouse button event is registered if I move the trackpoint. Pressing and releasing the middle mouse button is only registered if I click the button without moving the trackpoint.
When will there be a firmware update available for the keyboard, like for the SK-8855?
Since I am also using Linux, I would be really interested in fixing this in the firmware, not only getting a new Windows driver.

    Help please.

  • Auto-scoll (middle mouse button) gone/not working in Firefox 20/Windows 7 64-bit?

    duplicate of [/questions/956896]
I recently upgraded both my work PC and my home PC to Firefox 20.0.1. My work PC (Win XP 32-bit) works fine, but my home PC (Win 7 64-bit) no longer allows me to auto-scroll when I click the middle mouse button (it does nothing). I have tried restarting Firefox with all addons disabled, as well as a totally fresh install, but haven't had any luck. To clarify, the mouse wheel itself still works as it should, it's just clicking it in to auto-scroll that's the problem.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    ##EDIT##
    Please delete this (double post)

    Did you check the setting?
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General: Browsing: "Use autoscrolling"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.
