Mistake while installing OSX ?

MACBOOK PRO 9,1   Intel core i7 2.6 ghz    8gb    OS X 10.9.4 mavericks
Help !?
I'm relatively new to troubleshooting macs. I awoke, after falling asleep while my mac was playing a movie on netflix, to a flashing File folder icon with the ? in it. I attempted to restart it, and it gave me the hanging apple splash screen and the revolving thing just kept on for twn minutes.....this happened a month ago. i restarted in safemode and repaired the disc utility, and then i reset the ram.... that fixed it last time, this time, i may have not did it correctly,  not sure. I read online about reinstalling OS X from the hardrive but didn't realize that i needed to be connected to the web to do it, nor did i realize that i have to connect wifi manually, and i started to try the reinstall. needless to say, it stopped half way through and said it couldn't continue the reinstall. Now  I'm stuck on the OS X installer screen, and it gives me options to set up installation of OS X or Repair my disc from a backup .
My question is, since i wasn't connected the first time, to the internet, did i screw up my old files? Did i LOSE anything? Can i Reinstall from here without screwing anything up? WHere do i look for instructions? I'm at a loss because i'm new to macs. I was a PC guy and a builder at that, but i got impatient with this and tried to get ahead of myself. Now im nervously hoping all is not lost . thanks for any help you can give. i realize this may get annoying after a while.

Hey v joseph,
As long as the drive wasn't re-formated/erased, your information should still be on the HDD. When you do a regular re-install of OS X., it only installs the system files (the operating system and the built-in apps). Doing this in recovery would be your best bet. Start the MacBook Pro and immediately hold Command and R. You'll be brought to a screen that will either ask you to select a language or it will bring you to a list of options, one of those being "Reinstall OS X". You definitely need to be connected via Wi-Fi, make sure this connection is made before clicking the Re-install option and hitting continue.
You'll go through some prompts, it'll re-download the latest version of 10.9 (should be 10.9.4) and install it.
Entire process will take close to 2 hours.
My pro-tip for you: Make sure you have a Time Machine backup set up for events like this in the future. Just gives you the added piece of mind in knowing your data is being backed up.

  • An error occurred while installing osx

I tried to update to Mountain Lion this morning and got an error:
"an error occurred while installing osx"
I restarted using command R and went to utilities.  My HD seems to be fine with no errors.  When I try to reinstall mountain lion I get an error:
Could not find installation information for this machine.  Contact Apple Care.
Of course they are not open yet, but I guess at this point they may be my only option.
Any help would be appreciated otherwise.
    Thanks,
    Dan

I called support when they opened.  The tech had me do a simple restart and it then went to installing OSX again.  I have about 14 minutes left and hopefully it self corrects.  It was at about this time left that I originally had the problem.
I'll get back to everyone when and if successful.

  • Error while installing OSX on a clean hard drive

Hi, here the story: I've decided to reistall osx mavericks on my macbook, so i restarted my mac clicking cmd+r, and that in the recovery mode i earsed the main hard drive so i can have a clean install.
after that i went back and clicked the "Install osx maverics" and after asking my permission to "verify the installation with apple" i got this error:
An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.
I restarted, and then it started the "internet recovery" mode, wich now gives me the option to install osx mountain lion instead of mavericks, and gives me the same error every single time...
I've checked the date through the terminal, and its correct, but im not "PDT", thats the only error, Im in "IDT" time zone.
I dont know what to do, please help me...

    Hi, pietrodg -
The need to do a firmware update has nothing at all to do with whether the hard drive is 'clean' or not. Since a firmware update places new coding on one or more chips on the Mac's logicboard, erasing the hard drive or even replacing it with a new one will not alter the status of the firmware version on the machine.
The firmware update in question is applicable to the G4 (AGP), G4 (Gigabit Ethernet), and G4 (Digital Audio) models. You can check in Apple System Profiler to see what the current firmware version is - look for the info line labelled "Boot ROM version". If that line states something like "$0004.28f5" then it has been updated to the latest firmware version, v. 4.2.8.
Another way to check is to download and run the firmware updater - if it is not needed, the installer will so state and refuse to run further. You can download the updater from here -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note - the firmware updater will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9 on an internal writeable drive, such as a hard drive, and the updater must be located on that boot drive.

  • MBP won't boot after crashing while installing OSX

    Hi
My 2010 15" Macbook Pro crashed while installing Mountian Lion. This was clean install, I had earlier in the process formatted the harddrive.
I have browsed the forum for similar problems, but neither holding down cmd+ctrl+r+p, cmd+r nor just the option key on start-up gives me anything but black screen.
To avoid confusion I am sure that the computer is starting as I can hear the fans starting.
I hope very much to receive input, thank you

  • Mistake while installing elements 11

while i try to install elements 11 there is a mistake: gemeinsame Technologie...
Can somebody help me to install this programm.

Just before letting changes (installation in this case) be made on the system, Mac OS prompts for password & this has to be the Mac system password. This password prompt is the system's own native prompt & would accept the system password only. Please make sure it is the right system password (all/admin rights) and the installaion should run.

Adobe is not going to swap 13 for 12. It is selling only 13 download as you found out. So, you are going to have to purchase 12 if you want to use that program. It may still be available at some retail locations, such as Amazon.
If you are within 30 days of purchase and have purchase the download from Adobe, then contact Adobe via its Adobe Chat to get a refund. To do that, click on the following link

My macbook air is stuck at the "installing software updated" screen while installing update for the osX. What should I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac has been installing software updates for a long time, Software Update is probably frozen. Hold the Power button until your MacBook Air turns off, and turn it on again. OS X should start up.

  • Trying to install OSX.4 sys stalls when booting from dvd

I've read many of the discussions on this topic. Some are close but none are exactly like the problem I am encountering. I have a Power Mac G4 that was running OS9.2 and I've been trying to install OSX.4. I've tried every possible combination of starting from the dvd but it dones the same thing at the same point everytime. It restarts from the disk, I get the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. It will run like this for about a minute or two and then freeze. I can't force quit and I have to restart. I thought it needed a firmware update so I checked the links (I had seen on some of the posts) but it looks like it's a machine that doesn't need one. But I'm not 100% sure how to tell.
I then went back and started with OSX and OSX.2 and they installed fine. I thought it would have to be installed progressively. But I still have the same issue. I am doing an erase and install with each upgrade. The software is a full retail version for each upgrade as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michel,
Be aware that you can only use an external firewire disk as boot volume since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
The message you receive is o.k. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. This will boot you directly from the CD to the installer application. Once you selected the language, select disk utility from the MENU, select your External drive and format it as "Apple Extended (Journaled)".
Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation. Make sure you select the external drive as destination!
When you have to reboot you will boot to the internal disk again. That's o.k. Open disk utility and repair the external disk and also permissions on the external. Next download and install the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo). (you are still booted from the internal hard disk, so you will not be prompted for a restart).
Now restart and hold down the Option-key during boot. In the boot-manager you can select the external disk as boot volume. If your computer booted o.k. you made it! Just remember to Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • Install OSX 10.4.7 on iMac G3 creates panic messages, someone plz help me?!

    Hi,
I got this iMac G3 with OS 9.1 installed on the hdd. I first updated the firmware and then swapped the hdd for an empty one (with was once used on a windows system)
I try to install OSX 10.4.7 (original grey cd's for iMac) on my iMac G3
Short after reading the cd I get the following screen: grey with a black window witch says: "you need to restart your computer .Hold down the Powerbutton for several seconds or press the restart button" in several languages.
shown over this screen I see multiple lines with several panic and kernel messages.
the first line says: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E49D0): unable to find driver for this platform: "Powermac2,1".
I pressume that the last line mentions the problem witch causes the hanging?
    Last line says:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.3: Tue Aug 8 18:13:19 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.11.2obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
I strolled off the internet using this last message to find an answer for this "panic" but no results.
Pressing d or c while starting up doesn't matter, I instantly get the screen as discribed.
I did reset-nvram and then reset-all, still the same screen shown.
And yes, I'm new to the "appleworld", I've had it with windows, so hopefully i'm only making newbie errors
Anybody here who can help me out?
PS: i made a picture of the screen, but don't know how to upload it here (might not be possible anyway)

    HI Eppie (gek hoor)
I upgrade a lot of G3 from OS9 to Tiger. As we speak/type I'm doing a G3 500 MHz. I created a Tiger clone on a Hard disk so I can do the upgrade also on G3s without a DVD player.
The process USED to work smooth until a few minutes ago:
-- I upgraded my clone to 10.4.11 first: the clone disk was connected to a already long ago upgraded G3: went well
-- I upgraded the OS9 G3 on the firmware level
-- Tried to boot the G3 from the clone disk>>>BANG crash
-- Fortunately I had also a 10.4.4 clone on the same disk (other partition) and the target booted very well from that partition.
    Conclusion (until now)
iMac G3 with OS9 on the HDD and upgraded firmware won't leap to recent versions of tiger (I don't know where the break point is it's between 10.4.4 and 10.4.11
I'm right now transfering 10.4.4 and for the sake of the experiment I will look after the the target G3 is running 10.4.4. if I can boot from the external HDD partition with 10.4.11. If it works I'll transfer that one and having a clean 10.4.11 on a 7 old imac
    Hope this helps

    Hi,
I installed Oracle database on Linux , while installing oracle i got error

then i did some thing and it went thru, now i am trying to install the OWB again i am getting the same error and i was browsing net past 2 days for a solution but i din't get one
while installing oracle i have not made any notes, that was my mistake
Please suggest me the possible solution or the Document which can guide me
    Thanks in Advance
    Suresh

    Hi,
the problem is the logfile for the installation. Every oracle installtion writes a log file with this name in a predefined directory. Make the directory /tmp writable for oracle and extend the disk quota at least 60 MB.

  • OCR no longer working on an HP C5580 printer after installing OSX 10.6.1

I purchased an HP C5580 printer when I installed OSX 10.6. The scanner / OCR did not work. I called HP. The tech had me download the v10.3 driver and walked me thru the OCR set-up. The OCR worked (actually quite well).
When I updated to OSX 10.6.1 the OCR became non-existent. I called HP. The tech indicated that OCR NEVER worked in Snow Leopard and to purchase Readiris for $99. I said it worked just fine in OSX 10.6 – he said I was mistaken.
BTW, the tech indicated that there would be no updated HP software to allow OCR for the C5500 series printers for Snow Leopard.
I followed the post by Richard Cambell4 (9-15-09) to reload the HP v10.3 software and reload Apple’s HP update. I did that. The problem is that Richard’s update included a scan icon for the dock to toggle the scan/OCR – my update from Apple (11-3-09) only has an HP Device icon for the dock that does NOT include a scan/OCR toggle.
I checked for a free Mac OCR on Goggle and found zip – except for a command line program that I prefer not to use.
Am I missing something on the update? Or, does anyone have a fix for this problem (without going back to OSX 10.6.0 or buying the IRIS $99 OCR software)?
    Appreciate any help. Thanks.

    bschmidt86,
There is no need to buy anything. Simply download the full Snow Leopard compatible solution from [HP.com|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=o j-74785-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3575276]. If your device originally came with OCR capabilities, they will be exposed by HP Scan. Simply do a Document scan, and the save box will give you options with multiple OCR options in it (PDF, txt, html, rtf).
Do yourself a favor though, and before you install the software, run the HP Uninstaller (located in /Applications/Hewlett-Packard) and when the Uninstall screen comes up, press and hold Shift-Command-Control-Option while clicking on Uninstall. Say yes to the scary message. Restart the machine for good measure, and then install the solution mentioned above.
    Launch HP Scan, and enjoy!
    Just trying to help.

  • Wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk

    Hi everyone,
I need to wipe my iMac and reinstall OS X Leopard. I have the install disks, but my CD drive doesn't work and can't read the disk.
Is there a way for me to wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk?
    Thanks.

You can turn the 2011 iMac into a Firewire Optical drive.
Put the Leo Install Disc into the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 iMac while holding t key to put it into FW Target Disk Mode, with a FW cable connect the the 2, boot older one holding Alt key, choose the Leo Install Disc to boot from.
