Misuse of the "Edit Message" functionality in forums.

Hi,
I have been observing for some time now that some users are actually misusing the option of editing their forum post. This is partly due to the fact that the time stamp for the message is not updated when the edit is done. It still shows the time when it was posted.
Especially in the ABAP Programming Forum, there's a mad rush (among a few people) to be the first one to answer the question. In this hurry they are often making a post with an incorrect answer. Later on when they are told that what they have said is incorrect, they are simply editing the post and inserting the correct answer, which is known by then. This is sometimes resulting in multiple correct answers to a question and in the occassional case where the user wants to reward the correct answer, the points would actually go to these edited messages, because of their timestamp.
In a few other cases, the questions are being edited by the guy asking the question. Especially after having received some answers. When the question changes, the answers aren't correct any longer, obviously. At a later point someone attempting to answer the question would be left wondering why this question had had so many wrong answers!!
It sounds too string a step to take to remove this functionality. But may be we could allow this with some reservations. For example - all the content that has been deleted from a post can be highlighted (a function that is similar to the Modification Assistant in SAP or the Reviewing feature in MS-Word).

Wow, the point system is driving good and bad behavior.
We are watching/being part of an evolution of a system.
We have switches actually to deal with the problem.
1) Users can edit their message as long as their are no replies to it.
2) Users may edit their posts but only for a specific amount of time (for example 15 minutes) after posting a message.
Problem with number one is if people are posting really fast your window of opportunity to change your post is small.
Problem with number two is you still can play the game and post as the first one and wait 10 minutes for the correct solution to come in and correct your solution in the remaining 5 minutes. But we could set the window to 10 minutes.
Let me know which one you prefer and I will change it accordingly.

The get messages function only works for the first account

regardless of which account is listed in any order, the get messages button only gets messages for the first account in the list, thus if you are expecting one into another account you have to highlight that account and click the get messages....

I have no idea what your talking about. Thunderbird has no apps.
Perhaps your talking of add-ons. If you found an add-on perhaps you could mention what it is, so that I and other might know it exists.
You appear to be under some misconceptions,
!. Moderation is about answering questions. Wrong. Moderation is about deleting questions, editing comments that do not meet the guidelines for the forum and banning users.
2. Searching add-on is someone elses job.
3. Someone is getting paid to accept your criticism. I am not.
If I as a fellow user an ignorant of an add-on then tough luck for those I advise. They should have been resourceful enough to search for add-ons before they asked the question. I can only tell people what I know.

The "edit original" function....

Since I upgraded to the newest October cc release, I seem not to be able to use the function "edit original" anymore. I have the button but it is greyed out.
I worked fine in the release before.

Actually I found out. I think I had embedded the graphic and that is why it was not editable anymore.

I have lost the search messages function and the "sent" file under my second email address.

The search function to search messages that have been sent to me has disappeared. I also have to email addresses in thunderbird. The first one displays all my sent messages. But there is no "sent" option under my second email address

Lost search tool? That sounds as if you have lost a toolbar, or have lost a tool from the tool bar. Either way, I hope the following will help:

Where did "edit contacts" function go on the contacts menu for 2.1 firmware upgrade

Hi,
My wife's HTC Eris just got the OTA 2.1 firmware update. When editing a contact in the past with the phone, she would select the contact, then hit the menu button. That would bring up several options, including one to edit the contact. The the edit contact function has disappeared from the choices with the 2.1 upgrade. Any ideas/suggestions?

The edit is still there...in the People app...
select contact
pick the "rolodex" icon
menu->edit
However, if THAT contact is a Facebook contact, then you can't edit it.
You can view your sync'ed contacts ar the ROOT People screen [ MENU --> VIEW ]

Using "Edit in" function after upgrading to LR 4.4

Hello all,
I upgraded to 4.4 today and when I tried to use the "edit in" function on a photo an move to Elements 10 I got a message that LR was unable to prepare the selected file for editting and it will not be opened. I tried multiple photos and none of them work. I also went into preferences and set up Elements editor as my external program. This worked this morning before the upgrade. Any ideas?

You can make "Edit in" open any program, but it's not intuitive.
Edit menu, Preferences, External Editing tab. Then Click "Choose" button, navigate to the program you want (on a PC it will generally be a .exe file in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)"). Then tailor other settings (file format, colour space, bit depth...). Finally (don't forget this) click on the drop down next to "Preset:" and choose "Save current settings as new preset" and give it a suitable name. That will add your chosen program as a new entry in the "Edit in..." list.
As I say, it's not inuitive!

You should be getting an error message that PS CS5 requires a higher version of ACR with two options "render using Lightroom" or "open anyway". You should choose the first option. If you are not seeing the error message then go to your Lightroom prefrences >General Tab> under Prompts> select "Reset all warning dialogs", then try the edit in function again.

Edit an "intelligent group" in the "edit distribution list"

Dear all,
how can i edit members of an "intelligent group" in the "edit distribution list"?
What I try to find out is if it is possible to edit members with more than one email adress like it works for a normal group.
I managed to get the "edit distribution Llist" button in the adress book enabled, but I can't edit an "intelligent group".
System:
Mac OS X 10.7.2 (Lion)

If you want to allow edit functionality of attached files without development work, you can tell your users to attach folders instead of documents. When the folder is opened from the detail screen the edit locally functionality is available for the folder's content through the standard hover menu. Of course the task description would have to include instructions on which file to edit. Not perfect, but could be a solution.

Skype 7.2 edit messages option

I hope the "edit message" option change was unintended because it's a pain to use it for anything other than specific typos(those where the new text has the same amount of letters as the old one).
Please do answer on whether and when you plan to fix this. Thank you.

It did not help. Immediately after the login "Skype not responding." But now missing button "Debug", there was only the "Close the program".
Skype still is crashes.

I rarely record automation, and when I do I never do a second pass (usually hand draw automation in) but I have had problems with Logic 7 no longer playing back automation. I've been told its fixed in Logic 8, but in the mean time here is a work around.
Select the region where the automation is (if there is no region, create one using the pencil tool and expand it to cover all automation) and go OPTIONS menu -> TRACK AUTOMATION -> "Move current track data to region data." Now everything should play back as expected. If you want to edit the data, simply select "move current region data to track data" and edit away.
For some reason, Logic 7 will sometimes stop reading track automation data, but I have yet to have it stop reading region automation. This is a bug, and according to other users, has been fixed in Logic 8. Hope this helps until we eventually upgrade

Allow the user to control the width of the edit forum post input box

I would like to control the width of of the edit-forum post input box. This could be:
automatically adjust the width of the box so that the box doesn't run off the right edge of the window.
have a user global preference to set the preferred width
at least, allow the user to change the width via the change size icon. The three horizontal bars at the lower left of the input box. You can adjust the vertical dimension, but not the horizontal. TenFourFox 4.0.1. This is probably being blocked for some obscure reason.
Here is an example of an over extended right margin:
Curiously enough, the "software" let's me adjust the width & height of the add reason to edit text, but not adjust the width of the more important edit text box.

I do seem to remember someone posting about the width and saying they could drag it over the edge of the right hand edge (Into the grey surround)
This may have been a post in the lounge.
It didn't actually try it at the time but have played with it since and have not seen it.
Maybe it is something they "Fixed" in both senses of the word.

There is no version of iTunes that truly supports the 64-bit version of Windows XP and never will be. If you search this forum for "XP 64" or do a web search for something like "iTunes Windows XP 64", you'll find threads describing the process some people have used to "crowbar" iTunes onto XP 64, with varying levels of success, none of them complete.

I can export to photomatix . am considering LR4 over Aperature for ease of use with external editors. Currently aperature will be easier as file system more flexible unless this edit in function can be fixed

You need to fix the permissions on whatever "device, path or file" this erro message points to. This could be anything from trying to load a plug-in, access a device driver (printer, scanner, tablet etc.) to color profiles to your Photoshop scratch file. Impossible to tell. Check your Event Viewer. Perhaps there's some clue there...

I can't get the Copy Chat function to work in Text Messages

I have used the copy chat function before to copy complete chat history in text messages and then paste into a Docs To Go document. As the conversation gets longer, the process seemed to slow down, but it always worked. Now I am finding that it doesn't work at all. I use this to save conversation histories in the same way as I save email conversations.

You probably received a one week follow up email encouraging you to mark the thread as resolved if it has been resolved... just to help others as marking thread resolved, etc., helps the search for others. If it has not been resolved, don't mark it as such.
I don't know what the copy limit is within text message threads, but apparently there is one, as we've both noted.
I know this, if you never delete a very lengthy SMS thread, one with lots of chat, it can slow down your SMS and make it appear laggy, especially as you continue to chat with that friend, from time to time, as you open that chat each time.
Personally, from time to time, I will clear lengthy SMS chat with my 4-5 closest friends/family with whom my longer chats occur.
If you want to save those, there are BlackBerry apps which do that, export the chat history, here are three, and there are others:

I will be glad to ask around about the copy limits, if it is important to you. I don't know who, when copying text from an SMS you're going to be able to measure an amount to copy, i.e., how you're going to know when you've reached the limit of say, 1084 characters (if that were the limit).
