Mix Cd Project

I am completely new to audio development on the MAC. My employer has set me up Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro which includes Soundtrack.
To accommodate myself with my new tools and environment I am doing a simple mixing project that will include taking 13 mp3 thumpin house trax and mastering them into an “essential mix” Pete Tong would be proud of.
Needed parameters;
Transpose/pitch change individual trax? - absolutely!
Volume/fade adjustments? -Yep!
Master compression? -Darn tootin!
If I were using Vegas (Sonic Foundry/Sony), I would have been done with it last week and my familiarity with such is probably my undoing. As it is I am pullin my hair out trying to figure out how all the sudden I have become a droolin audio idiot on a MAC.
Logic, Soundtrack, Garageband? Nothing seems to be working for me to this end.
Suggestions?

The Ableton suggestion is spot on. Logis is not set up to do what you want if you actually want to execute a DJ-style mix. The tempo of any song is usually not constant. It will drift. This is especially true if you are getting any of your songs from vinyl recordings. Logic cannot handle or correct these drifts - Ableton can.
Even if you set the tempo of the entire track based on the length of the region, it will not account for the tempo drift within the song. It will only give you the average tempo of the track
If you simply want to butt the songs end-to-end, you can to that with this method. You cold trim the songs in the Sample Editor and then butt them together in the Arange page. Drag the file in to the Arange page, select the file, then highlight the area in the bar area that corresponds with the length of the song. Then press the "T" key. This will set the Logic tempo to match the song tempo in that region.
Repeat the process for each track.
This, though, is not a Dj mix. For that, use Ableton.

    after mixing a project i select bounce and burn the disc that is burned plays on any cd player but when i try to burn the wav or mp3 file that was created the resulting disc will only play in a computer this also happens with video projects help please are there any settings i need to alter as it seems the wav or mp3 file i ceated is being converted to a data file somewhere between the folder and disc drive

    Same thing for a movie file.. If you want to play back the movie via a DVD and a DVD player you must create a Movie DVD  and not just burn files to a data DVD... as Data DVDs are just storage devices for files and therefore will only work with computers...
    Movie DVDs are special formats that include things like menus and special file formats.. so they can playback via a DVD Player...
    You will need a 3rd party DVD Burning app like Toast which is what i actually use.... or the more popular DVD Creator app...to create and then burn a Movie DVD that will playback on a DVD Player....

  • PRE8 Mixed Media Project Issues

    Problem Description: When creating a New Project and after importing a combination of video (MOD) and still images (jpeg) I get a pop up that says "Premeir Elements 8 is running low on system memory. Please save any changes to you project and close PRE" or something similar to that message.
    I just don't understand what I need to do to get PRE 8 to run on my system without running out of "system resources".
    I have a separate hard drive for my PRE projects so that I am not running the program on the same drive that my projects are on. Please help, I am new to Premiere Elements, but have work a little with other Adobe products in the past. I know with some of their products you have to specify scratch disks to help the software to run smoothly. Is that what I am missing? When I purchased this product I kinda hoped that it would be just a simple drag&drop, edit the files in program, add effects/transitions/audio and then compile the final video, but I have not been able to successfully create anything with PRE on my very capable system...pretty sad.
    Again please help,
    I have a HPE Pavilion 180T PC

  • Interlace lines on export, mixed media project (Canon XH A1and iPhone 4S)

    I'm having a problem when exporting my project from Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7. I have shot at 50i on my Canon XH A1 and am also using iPhone 4S footage. It plays fine when editing but when I export using the .h264 codec I get horrible interlace lines across the footage which are really pronounced when there is any type of motion in the shot.
    I've tried ticking the de-interlace box on the clip settings, changing the settings to progressive, changing the fields to upper or none and exporting the project again but I'm still getting these lines when playing the exported film in VLC player.
    Please help!

    Thanks Tom, I knew it must be something simple I was missing. Big help!

  • Logic Crashing on Quit with Liquid Mix in Project

    Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. I'm pretty sure LM is causing it because on the hardware as it quits there will be ghost levels frozen on the display.

    If you're really sure it's that Nexus plug-in this is what I would do to open the project.
    1.) Exit Logic
    2.) Backup your project.
    3.) go to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Componets and move (as in take out not copy) the Nexus.componet to your desktop.
    4.) Start Logic
    5.) Open the Project.
    The Project will load but the tracks using the Nexus plug-in should have a cross out over them.
    It won't delete the track.
    Switch those tracks to say a EXS24 instrument
    FYI - If the project still crashes, it wasn't the Nexus plug-in. Close the Project and exit Logic and copy the Nexus.componet back to the componets directory and good luck otherwise if it did open continue to #6.
    6.) Save the Project and Exit Logic
    7.) Copy the Nexus.componet back to the Compents directory.
    8.) Start Logic
    9.) Open that saved project.
    10.) Go to the EXS24 tracks and replace each with the Nexus.
    11.) Save the Project and Exit Logic
    Now open the Project again to see if your project still crash.

  • Mixed framerate project

    I'm putting together a sequence which uses clips with different framerates (mostly 24P and 30P, I think).
    What are the ideal settings for the project, and for output? 30fps? 60?
    What's your experience?

    Andrew has a point. If you know you are going to put it on a DVD with interlaced output, your problem can be easily solved by using pulldown on the 24p sequences and doubling the fields for the 30p stuff, working in 30fps all the time. For other output formats, condensing the footage to 24p would be more advisable to avoid the "stutter" when having to double frames in the 24p footage. This would also simplify output to BluRay or web formats, if that is of any relevance.

  • Misaligned stack crash in mixed compiler project

    I'm running into a crash that baffled me for awhile.  Now I know what's causing it and I'm looking for more information to help me decide on the best course of action.  First, a simplified example:
    *###  blah.F
          SUBROUTINE BLAH
          CALL STUFF
          END
    // stuff1.cc
    extern "C" {
      void blah_();
      void stuff_();
    int main( int argc, char *argv[] ) {
      stuff_();
      blah_();  // will segfault in stuff_()
      return 0;
    // stuff2.cc
    #include <stdio.h>
    extern "C" void stuff_() {
      char test[127] = {};  // if stack is misaligned, crash occurs here
      printf( "0x%08X\n", (unsigned int)&test[0] );
    #!/bin/bash
    # build.sh
    # path is already setup for running the compilers
    f90     ${1} -ftrap=%none -mt -m32 blah.F -c -o blah.o
    clang++ -mcpu=pentium4 -m32 ${2} stuff1.cc stuff2.cc -c
    clang++ -mcpu=pentium4 -m32 ${2} stuff1.o stuff2.o blah.o -o stuff
    ulimit -c unlimited
    rm core.*
    ./stuff
    This is occurring on a fairly new x86 machine using Sun Studio 12.3's fortran compiler and clang 3.4.  Ultimately, the array initialization code emitted by clang is crashing when called from Fortran code because it's emitting (SIMD?) instructions that expect the address to be 16-byte aligned, but the Fortran code is defaulting to emitting Pentium 1-compliant executable code and the build of clang I'm using defaults to pentium4.  It only happens when the C++ code is built with clang's stack protector, and this may indicate they have a bug in their implementation of stack protector.  After I finish this post I may go about running a similar test against gfortran to see if I can reproduce this problem without sun studio.
    There also seems to be a lot of contention about whether the SysV i386 ABI is the "right" ABI to use or not, and that may be at the heart of why this is happening.
    Anyway, on to the rest of this post. build.sh, as written, takes two positional arguments; ${1} is passed into f90 and ${2} is passed into clang when compiling/linking the C++ code.  Additionally, -mcpu=pentium4 appears to be the default for the build of clang I'm using; I only added it to emphasize that it's not targeting generic x86 hardware by default.
    # no crash
    ./build.sh
    # crash on all 4
    ./build.sh "" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    ./build.sh "-xtarget=pentium4" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    ./build.sh "-xchip=pentium4" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    ./build.sh "-xarch=sse2" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    # no crash
    ./build.sh "-xarch=sse2a" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    ./build.sh "-xarch=sse3" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    ./build.sh "-O0" "-fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector"
    It looks like the optimizer runs when I select anything above -xarch=sse2, so I'm not absolutely sure that it's not just the optimizer causing the crash to go away as opposed to something being done to make sure the stack is 16-byte aligned for performance reasons.  Not using stack protector causes the problem to go away as well, but I'm looking for a solution that allows me to have my cake and eat it too.
    Last night when I discovered -xarch=sse3 fixes this, I was ready to just tweak the build and have done with it, then I decided to play around with -xtarget and -xchip and was surprised to discover that the crash still happens, again presumably because the optimizer isn't running.
    My suspicion here is that the fortran compiler, when told to use pentium4 with -xtarget and/or -xchip, is not taking into account that sse3 instructions may be used and therefore not aligning the stack.
    I'm trying to avoid adding any optimizations to the build, and if I'm right that the optimizer runs when -xarch=sse2a (or higher) are used, then I'm leery of adding that to the build ... but if I don't have another choice, then that may be what I'll have to do.
    What would you recommend I do here?
    -Brian

    I forgot to mention clang's -mstackrealign option.  That option fixes the problem, but
    It adds extra overhead that can decrease performance
    While I want to avoid adding optimizations right now, that doesn't mean I don't want optimizations later.  Using this option would be an impediment to that.

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

    I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
    Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

    If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

  • Help with still photo project in premiere 11

    I'm new to Premiere 11.  I did a project using only stills and music from my macbook pro. The project is about 6.5 minutes long and uses only dissolves and a couple of exposure adjustments. The orange line runs across the top of the entire project so I thought it needed to be rendered. When I hit the render button, nothing happens. I tried to burn it to dvd as is and it burns to 99% and ejects. It will not play in a dvd player although it will play on the computer at a very low quality, poor resolution. Obviously I am missing something. Any ideas???...thanks

    RaySull
    Depending on your computer resources and Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 or 8 64 bit as a 64 bit application, you may or may not be able to stretch the classic recommendations for sizing for photos for use in a project destined for DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc. Those recommendations are: for SD, pixel dimensions not to exceed 1000 x 750 pixels and for HD, pixel dimensions not to exceed about 2200 x 1238 pixels. But, since you are experiencing problems with the project that you now have in place, I would encourage you to go by the classical recommendation for photo sizing.
    But keep this in mind...your photos are 3072 x 2048 (3:2) and your DVD-VIDEO is going to be 4:3 or 16:9. If it were just a matter of 4:3 to 4:3, then you would resize. But, when you are going from 3:2 to 4:3 or 16:9, you should consider cropping and resizing. Most of the programs offer batch resizing, some batch cropping and resizing. The free IrfanView program is often mentioned for batch cropping/resizing, while programs such as Photoshop Elements (Process Multiple Files) and Photoshop (Automate/Batch) are frequently mentioned for batch resizing.
    When you are ready for Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc and are in the burn dialog (with your DVD disc in the burner tray) you will see in the Quality area Space Required and Bitrate information.
    All this does throw into the mix what project preset ot use. In this instance, I would suggest that you set the project preset yourself via File Menu/New/Project. If you crop/resize the photos for DVD-VIDEO widescreen, then set the project preset yourself for NTSC (or PAL) DV Widescreen. If you crop/resize the photos for DVD-VIDEO standard, then set for NTSC (or PAL) DV Standard.
    Please do not hesitate ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thanks.

  • Project Server 2013 for Resource Planning & Project Portfolio Management

    We are looking to  use project server 2013 for resource and project portfolio management.  We are an IT department of approximately 600 growing to 1,000 within the next several years.
    We would like to us PS2013 to do the following :
    Manage Portfolio of Projects
    Manage Resources against this Portfolio
    Calculate Project Finances using resource roles and rates
    I would be grateful to have both comments on experience , both positive and negative.
    Thank You

    Many teams within organizations are turning to Project Server to help them control resources, deliverables and costs better.    It does resource management very well with work & cost resources, baseline costs, material costs, budget costs and
    out of the box earned value analysis (EV).  The Strategy (portfolio) component is very powerful and it will help you identify project that align to your objects then do what if analysis to find the right mix of projects.
    Here are a couple of things you should think about when moving to PS2013:
    1) Who will be using the tool?  If it is a mix of onsite staff, remote staff, vendors, contractors etc. you may want to think about a hosted solution.
    2) Training.  Don't assume everyone will just magically 'know' how to use the tool.  Train everyone (team members, PMs, Executives) then train them again.  It's the only way to truly get the value out of the tool.
    3) Who will manage the system?  This is not a typical application.  The right administrator needs SharePoint, Project Server, SQL Server,  MS Project, Analysis Services and SQL Report writing skills.  Please note that much of this can
    be learned by the right person but DEFINITELY find the right person.
    4) Don't start customizing right out of the box.  You will get frustrated.  Adjust your organization to the tool early on.  I know that is easier said than done but you need a realistic approach to get tool acceptance moving early.
    5) Use workflows but don't use them right out of the gate.  Workflows are great but I suggest you wait until phase 2 or 3 to start aligning them to your business processes.
    6) Lastly and most importantly, you must first establish your own business processes THEN  align them to the tool.  DO NOT assume the tool will create business process for you.  You must think about how you are going to initiate a project,
    how are you going to track deliverables, how will time sheets be managed, etc.  Get to a whiteboard, crack open Visio and start building and establishing your processes now.  PS 2013 is pretty flexible and usually will align well with existing business
    processes.
    And don't forget to hire a good consultant.  They can be brought in during key phases of your roll-out to add value, help you avoid risks, and provide you with best practice advice.
    Good luck.

  • "Incompatible Angle VOBUs" Mixed-Angle issues

    Does anyone know what "Incompatible Angle VOBUs" error means?
    I am working on a mixed angle DVD and I am having a horrible time. I get the "Internal Muxer error", or "Incompatible Angle VOBUs" errors and the build/burn fails.
    I've tried several different methods. Here is my current method:
    1. Export the "main" stream from fcp5 to m2v using Compressor 2 (4.3 constant br & closed GOP) with the appropriate chapter markers.
    2. Export the 7 different mixed-angle pieces from fcp to m2v using the same Compressor settings.
    3. Add 'main' m2v file to dvdsp3, and plug in the 7 mixed angle sections on the second video stream
    4. There are no GOP errors and it simulates perfectly
    5. It will not build, or burn.
    Another method I've tried is exporting the "main" stream as (14) pieces (and hence no markers) and putting all the m2v pieces into dvdsp together. I create the markers at the beginning of each clip, then insert the mixed angle pieces (on the second video stream). Again, no GOP issues and it simulates perfectly, but it fails on the build/burn.
    Also: When I put the first 3 (of 7) mixed angle pieces on the second video stream, the project builds/burns and works fine. If I add any of the other mixed angle pieces, it gives me the "Incompatible Angle VOBUs", or the "Internal Mixer error".
    Does anyone have any suggestions? or any methods for creating mixed-angle dvds?

    I've found a work around to 'solve' my problem. (And the work-around doesn't make any sense)
    Work-Around: I split my ~38 minute piece into 2 tracks (with a end jump on track 1 to go to track 2).
    I put half of my clips on Track 1, create markers, and place the mixed angle pieces in the appropriate places. I keep on adding pieces until the project won't build. Then, I put the next pieces on Track 2 and repeat the Track 1 process (and add the end jump on Track 1). Everything works correctly and the dvd builds/burns.
    I just started a similar mixed angle project with different footage and I get the exact same errors ("Incompatible Angle VOBUs", or "Internal Muxer Error"). I don't want to say this is a dvdsp3 bug, but the sentiment is on the tip of my tongue. This is a "Pro App", correct?
    My work-around makes no sense.
    Is DVDSP4 any better for this type of work?
    For the small subset of people working on mixed-angle and multi-angle dvds, are you getting them to work correctly? I've noticed several people using the QT export as self-containted movie trick. You shouldn't have to do that to get your project to work correctly.

  • Mixing when using external midi devices . . .

    Hi,
    This is the first time I'm mixing a project using an external midi device. Formerly, using an older version of DP, I would record each track from the midi device into an audio track before mixing because those tracks don't "bounce" when mixing. Anybody here who uses external devices do it differently?
    Thanks, josf

    Using the external I/O plug in you can bounce your external midi instruments to audio tracks in realtime in logic, but you have to add the New multi instrument in the environment so that it can be represented in the external destination parameter of the EXternal I/O plug in.
    At least I think this is how things work. You also need an audio interface with the outs of your hardware to the ins of the inputs and the midi cables configured.
    But.. I think there is a latency issue there.. anyone know how to compensate for this? Like if I bounce a track in realtime in logic.. it records the time that it takes the audio to "get into" the software.. It never bounces a track right on the beat, as if I were to bounce a track from say the EXS sampler.. When I do it inside logic it bounces it right on the beat.. with no "dead space" beforehand.. but if I use external equipment there is always a lag.. any suggestions?

  • Soundtrack Pro 3 Cannot Save On Project Build

    All, I have been fighting a problem all weekend. STP is unable to save my large project. Before I give up and tell my friend to mix the project on his Windows machine because my MAC can't do it, I'd figure I try one last post here to see if anyone has ideas that I haven't tried (and I've been searching the posts too.) Here goes:
    I have an IMAC 3.06 Core2 DUO with 4GB memory. I have two external GRAID FW800 drives. All disks have plenty of space on them. The project is on the MAC HDD and the audio files are on the external GRAID 4GB FW800 drive. I am running STP 3.0.1.
    I am mixing a Christmas service that has up to 33 audio 24 bit AIFF files. The files were originally provided to me in a WAV format. I also have a reference HD 1040i24P reference movie MOV with accompanying referenced soundtrack. The service is about 1 hour 10 minutes long. The tracks run continuously through the entire service.
    The problem is that I can't add all the tracks and get STP to save my work. When I attempt to save, the system pauses for a moment and then comes back. I can see the free memory dip as it attempts to save and then the free memory goes back up. I receive no indication that the save has occurred. However, I do watch the project file in the finder. When the non-save failure occurs, the project time stamp is not updated. It is updated on successful saves of course. If I attempt to save a second time after the non-save event, I get the pinwheel and it's all over. Or I get an error, "Uncaught Exception". I get the log file and typically it says the application has hanged (hung?).
    OK - here are the specifics if you care to suffer through this thread further:
    -I can add about 10 tracks and save the project ok. It saves - the time stamp increments and I continue. As I add more and more tracks the problem occurs sometimes at the 15th track, sometimes higher (but I never get them all added.)
    - I have mixed the tracks in the WAV format and in the Apple native AIFF format (Used compressor to convert them all). The typical WAV file is 673MB. The typical AIFF is 976MB.
    -I have opened two clean projects, added five at a time to one project (call that the source) and copied and pasted the 5 tracks to the final project. I would delete the 5 tracks from the source project, added 5 more to it, selected copied them all, went the final project, made sure I had one blank track at the bottom, pasted the tracks to the playhead (STP notifies me it needs to add tracks - I acknowledge) and then SAVED SUCCESSFULLY. I repeated this process and it got me the furthest - reaching all the way to the 33rd track when it refused to save - same error (ugh!). In this case, I did this without the movie in the project figuring if I could mix just the audio, I could get by imaging the video piece.
    I've tried several things though these exploits. None of these have fixed the issue.
    - Added a few tracks at a time, saved, added move, saved (watching the date stamp) until I get to about the 20th track at which time I get the save problem.
    - Converted the 24 bit tracks to 16 bit AIFF files using compressor - same result (doesn't matter if I am mixing WAV or AIFF.)
    - Started new projects, to attempt a clean slate - same failure
    - Watched my memory closely through the process. Closed all applications to insure I have free memory left. Between free and inactive, never had an issue although I have seen free go close to 100 MB a few times.
    - Trashed my preferences
    - Verified and fixed disk permissions on IMAC drive and external drives.
    - Moved the audio files to another external drive to insure it is not a drive issue. The disk activity seems to peak at 20MB/Sec but is not consistent.
    - I make sure there are no non-alpha numeric characters in the file name (no dashes or slashes.)
    One of the 'Unexpected Problem' failure messages I have received is the following: "NSMallocException * -[NSConcreteMutableData appendBytes:length]: unable to allocate memory for length (30555608). This occurs even though I have about 500MB between Free and Inactive memory showing.
    My conclusion in all of this is that STP has an internal memory allocation limit and depending on the state of the system at the time, memory is misallocated or mis-read. I have plenty of log files to send in case Apple is watching this thread.
    Thanks for anyone's help. Hopefully, the Apple discussion thread would crash when I press 'Post Message.'
    Happy New Year!
    Chris

    OK guys, I did another test. System:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
    L2 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
    Memory: 8 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Results: Crash & burn.
    First I attempted to open one of my prior projects that would no longer save. The project opened but would not save. To this I attributed to a corrupted project and moved on.
    Second, I opened a new project (after force quitting) and opened the prior project. I copied and pasted all the tracks into the new project. I attempted to save the new project - no joy. I forced quit. (Ok - I was being lazy on building the project so I went to test 3.)
    Third (and final test): I built the project from scratch, saving along the way. No problem on the saves up to 25 tracks. I put the final 8 tracks in (up to 33) and went to save. THE PROJECT WON'T SAVE. At the time, I had 3.53GB of free memory. Apple, if you are watching, I sent the crash report for this machine at about 4:30 PST.
    So, the problem is not free memory. It is in the way STP is allocating memory. The issue isn't a corrupted track as I have added the tracks in various orders with the same result.
    The only option I have is to mix down tracks. I'll start with the drums (10 mics) and go from there.
    Shucks.
    Chris
    Post note - I saw very little performance difference between my dual core 3.06 with 4 GB and this machine. STP just does not use the assets at its disposal. The processor barely gets above 14 percent....

  • Dual layer mixed-angle problems

    I'm working on a dual layer mixed-angle project. Everything simulates fine, but the problem somes when trying to build it.
    I get a "video bit rate too high" error when muxing. I had lowered the max bit rate in compressor to 5.8m The audio is encoded to AC3 using compressor.
    I had previously done some test discs for my client and everything was fine. So I went back to the check disc and began adding assets one at a time to try and figure out where the problem is.
    Every built fine until I cross the single layer limit. The dual layer property is checked in the disk properties. I've tried setting last marker before the disc won't build to a layer break point, etc.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there, are you far over the limit for single layer disc? If you're between 5 & 6 gig try building the disc as a single layer project to your hard drive then use DVDRemaster or DVD2One to shrink it back to 4.4gig. Don't know if it will work but might be worth a try. Was your original client test done in DVDSP3 or 4?
    Cheers

  • Transferring project from a lap top (iMovie) to an iMac (Final Cut Express)

    I have a partially completed video project on a Powerbook G4 lap top - using iMovie. I wish to transfer it to my iMac so that I can import it to FCE. What is the best way please to do the transfer? I have the computers connected via a Firewire cable and can see the lap top on the screen of the iMac. Should I create a Quick Time Movie on the laptop (using "best quality"), then export it to the iMac, and finally import it to FCE. Or is there a better way?

    I can't tell you how to transfer the project, but I would like to say that mixing iMovie projects and FCE ones is not a good idea.
    It can be done, but it is likely to cause problems.
    It is always best to stick to one application.
    It should be possible to recapture the footage from the camera in FCE and completely redo the video.
    This will not take as long as you think as you know exactly which scenes and effects etc. you need, so it will be much quicker than your first attempt in iMovie.
    Making a QT Movie as you suggest should be OK but all the transitions etc. will be "embedded" and you won't be able to readjust them.
