Mixed 2960 S/X Stack speed

i have a 2960s 3 switch stack.
i purchased a 2960x switch to add to the above stack.
i plan to upgrade the 2960s stack IOS version to the  version  on the  2960x switch and then add the new switch to the stack.
i have read that i also need to change the default stack speed with this command "switch stack port-speed 10"
however i didnt understand when to execute the command in my situation.
if i run this on the new 2960X switch before adding it to the stack will the command have affect after joining the stack and having all its config replaced by the stack config?
thanks

do i need to execute the above command ? and on which switch/stack

I have a 2960X switch that has the stack speed at 10G. I can't for the life of me figure out how to set it back to 20G. Thanks for your help, Joe.

    Hello, kmolino6294.
I assume you already have the FlexStack module on each of your 2960-X switches? You can also check FlexStack-Plus for a higher stack throughput.

  • Catalyst 2960, Auto-MDIX, Auto-Speed and Auto-Duplex

    Hi
I have a 2960 switch. Our ISP provided me with a straight-through cable and said that I needed to use a cross-over, and set speed to 100 and duplex to full.
Instead, I used Auto-MDIX, but then I have to set speed and duplex to Auto - the switch won't allow manual setting of speed and duplex when using auto-MDIX. The link then sets itself to 100-half.
Do I have to use a cross-over cable so that I can set the speed and duplex?
    Thanks and regards
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
Yes with auto-mdix you cannot manually set the speed and duplex settings.
I think your ISP had set the duplex settings to half duplex and that is the reason it is negotiating to half duplex or if he is using some kind of converter between your switch and thier switch it could be an issue.
Also yes if you use a cross over cable you will definetely be able to set the speed and duplex setting to 100 and full but if your isp is on half duplex you will face collisions so just confirm from your ISP his switchport settings.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

  • 4500-X VSS and Dual-Active detection PAgP, using 2960-X access stacks

    Hi.
I think this may have been asked before but its not clear to me.
    I have 2 4500-X configured as a VSS pair, so a VSL link of 2 x 10Gig between them.
I have a number of Access stacks, built from 2600-X's
I have tried to configure dual active detection, which from what I read it is to use ePAgP or Dual-Active Fast hello Packets.
I do not have any additional SFP's to connect the 4500's together using Fast Hello, so ePAgP appears my only option
When I try and configure the access stack with an Etherchannel across 2 switches using PAgP I get the error -
command rejected by the 2960-x stack
%With PAgP enabled, all ports in the Channel should belong to the same switch
Command rejected (Port-channel11, Te1/0/1): Invalid etherchnl mode
From what I have read, PAgP cannot be configured across a stack, and people are recommending LACP as the method to configure the Etherchannnel, but How does that work with Dual-Active detection PAgP?
When I configuring Dual-Active detection PAgP, and made a couple of the MEC's trusted and configure using LACP active, then tried failing the VSL between the 4500's, each stack went into err disable on the trunk connections.
Question is! Does dual active detection PAgP work over an Etherchannel configured as LACP? or what's my options
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Question is! Does dual active detection PAgP work over an Etherchannel configured as LACP? or what's my options
No, you can't use LACP for ePAGP detection.  One option is to break one of the stacks in your access layer and use the switch you want to use for dual active detection individually (not part of a stack) and uplink it to both 4500X switches. This way, you know that the single switch is used for ePAgP detection.

  • 2960s and 2960X stacking

Gents we have used couple of 3750G in past and rule of thumb was that IOS and model should be same inorder to stack them
Is it different for 2960 series swicthes
We have 2 WS-C2960X-48FPS-L and one 2960S swicth can we stack them will it work ??? what about the IOS??? i know the with X its stack-plus (which is faster) but mu question is unlike 3750G will they can be stackable with different IOS???

All the possibilities and restrictions are very good explained in the 2960-X-FAQ:

  • 3750 Stacking Speed - 16 Gbps vs 32 Gbps

I am configuring a stack of 3 3750's with the stackwise technology. I have noticed with CNA that it sometimes reports a 16 Gbps speed stack and sometimes a 32 Gbps stack. Right now it is reporting 16 Gbps. I assume it has something to do with the stacking ports.
Here is what the switch reports now:
    ncrplan01#sh switch stack-ports
    Switch # Port 1 Port 2
    1 Ok Down
    2 Ok Ok
    3 Down Ok
All ports have stacking cables in a looped fashion. I don't see any commands for bringing up the "Down" stacking ports. What am I missing?

OK! This is kinda weird. I disconnected the cable from 3 to 1 and then just pushed it back on. This brought the the link from 3 to 1. When I screwed it in, the link went down again. In order to get it back up, I have to back off the screws a few turns :-(

  • 2960x & 2960s stacking?

Hey guys recently I tried to introduce a 2960x switch into a 2960s stack.
I prepped the bpth switches and made sure the prefer sdm was set to default as well as setting the stack port speed on the 2960s stack to 10 so its would be compatible.
Once i stacked the switches i got a version mismatch error and an auto upgrade message, after waiting roughly 40 minutes with no succcessful upgrade i removed the X switch from the stack
below are the IOS running on both switches

    Hope this can help you.
    Mixed Stacks: FlexStack and FlexStack-Plus
The 2960-S and 2960-X support a mixed stack of 2960 models. All  these 2960 models run the FlexStack protocol, allowing them to be  stacked together into a single stack. The exception is the 2960-XR does  not stack with either the 2960-X or the 2960-S. The 2960-XR has the  IP-Lite feature set, and this is not compatible with the LAN Base  feature set on the 2960-X and 2960-XR. Table 2 shows all the allowed  mixed stack combinations. What is crucial is the Cisco IOS Software  feature set. All 2960 models with the LAN Base Cisco IOS Software  feature set can stack together.
Table 2. Allowed Mixed Stack Combinations

When the 2960-S and 2960-X members are stacked together, the entire  stack (even the 2960-X members) fall back to FlexStack capabilities.  Mixing 2960 members limits the max stack members to four, and 20Gbps  stack bandwidth per member, and 40Gbps per stack.

  • Adding 2960-X to 2960-S Stack

    i purchased a new 2960-X switch
i  would like to add it to an existing 2 switch 2960-s stack
i understand i need to downgrade the stack speed on the 2960-x with :
    switch stack port-speed 10
do the IOS version need to be identical on all switches?
    i have:
    2960-s = 12.2(55)SE3
    2960-x =  15.0(2)EX3
if they do need to be identical, whats the best way to do this?
    thanks

Yes, use this command with a .tar file to upgrade all switches in the stack.
Here is an example of using the `archive download-sw` command to upgrade a stack of Cisco Catalyst 2960-S switches. Notice that the number of members in the stack is not relevant to this command. By default all members are upgraded unless the network admin uses the options to do otherwise. The TFTP IP address is 192.168.1.1, and the tar file name is c2960s-universalk9-tar.122.53.SE.tar

  • Cisco 2960-X stacking question

    Hi all,
We're planning buy 6 set of Cisco 2960-X with stacking with existing two firewall with HA function (please see attached diagram), if firewall 01 down will auto failover to firewall 02, is this network design good ?
Please some expert give us suggestion.
    Thanks

    1. Do 2960-X support 6 member stacking ?
2960X support a stack size of 8, however, you need to be careful.  The stacking speed of the 2960X is 20 Gbps.  So you need to know if stacking up 8 is beneficial or not.
    2. Do 2960-X support Bladeswitch stack cable ?
No.  The stacking cable for the 2960S/X/XR are specific only for this models.
    3. I think need buy stack module, right ?
    Stacking modules and stacking cables.

  • Connecting 2 3750 Switches in Stack with 2 2960 switches in full Mesh

    Hi Friends,
I have attached a pics  which DC design of one of our customer , as network engineer i have design this , so i am responsible for implementing it, now request you all to kindly guide me what would be technical problem i have to face in achieving this and how can i over come .Please be in detail. Waiting for your response .
    Regards
    Amit Kulshrestha

I have attached modified diagram , please suggest.
The major issue I see is that you have not mentioned whether the 2960's are stacked? For the design to work, they need to be stacked because you cannot create port-channels between them and the Core switches unless then 2960's are stacked.
==> You are right , surely 2960 Switch need to be in stack form.
Personally I would look at more powerful switches than the 2960's, something along the lines of the 3750x range or probably now the 3850's.
==> This is constrain of customer, not our responsibility.
The second issue I see is that your servers are connected to the WAN switches. Is there a reason for this? Usually they would be connected to the core switches.
==> For this If 1 separate 2960 series switch can be used ?.
The final point is that you only have single connections from each of your WAN connections which begs the question as to the purpose of having two WAN switches?
==> Customer is having 1900 series of router , only two ports one used for WAN and other used for LAN.
The objective of having two switches is to provide redundancy/resiliency. If you have only one connection from each WAN then why do you need two switches as there is no redundancy?
==> Customer has agreed to have manual change at the time of failure.

  • Cisco 2960-s stack problem

    hi all,
i try to counfigure 2X 2960-S as stack , one is 48 ports and the other is 24 ports.
i configured the command switch 1 priority 14 and the renumber command.
when the switches is restarted the 48 port sw is the master and this is ok.
when i take the master down, the 24 ports SW is take the master , but when the master (48) is back to live , he is boot as member.
how can i force the 48 take the master again?
    thanks!

    Hello.
After a new stack master is elected and the previous stack master becomes available, the previous stack master does not resume its role as stack master.
    Per documentation:
A stack master retains its role unless one of these events occurs:
    The switch stack is reset.*
The stack master is removed from the switch stack.
The stack master is reset or powered off.
    The stack master fails.
The switch stack membership is increased by adding powered-on standalone switches or switch stacks.*
In the events marked by an asterisk (*), the current stack master might be reelected based on the listed factors.
PS: could you clarify why do you have the requirement?

  • Can ws-c2960s stack with WS-C2960X-?

    can ws-c2960s-24ts-l & ws-c2960s-24ps-l ( existing  environment)
stack with WS-C2960X-24TS-L ? since ws-c2960s-24ts-l is going to AEOS.
how many switches can be stack ?

    Yes, it is supported:
    from the data sheet:
FlexStack-Plus is backward compatible with 2960-S and FlexStack. Mixing 2960-X and 2960-S members in a stack is supported. When the stack membership is mixed with 2960-X and 2960-S models, FlexStack-Plus falls back to FlexStack capabilities of 40Gbps stack bandwidth and four members maximum per stack.

  • Cisco 2960s Switch replacement

    Greetings,
    Dear Experts,
We are using the Cisco 2960s Switches in our network. We have two failed switches and asked for replacement from our supplier. They informed that the 2960s model is approaching End Of Service (EOS) and the replacement of that model are as below:
    1- WS-C2960X-24TS-L
    Catalyst 2960-X 24 GigE, 4 x 1G SFP, LAN Base
    2-WS-C2960S-24TS-L
    Catalyst 2960S 24 GigE, 4 x SFP LAN Base
What is the best practice to make my decision of which to select? will it make difference from the configuration perspective? is there a possibility for conflict with the existing 2960s Switches?
Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance.
    Thanks and Regards

We have two failed switches and asked for replacement from our supplier.
Time for you to talk to your supplier.  Cisco has announced the EoS/EoL for the 2960S back in November 2014 (End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the Cisco Catalyst 2960-S Series and 2960-SF Series Switches).  However, this only means the date of November 2014 is just a date of announcement.  The final date of sale for the 2960S is November 2015.
I think your supplier either is getting confused (didn't read the announcement properly or didn't know) or is just looking for ways to make more money.
is there a possibility for conflict with the existing 2960s Switches?
You can form a stack of 2960S and 2960X.  Just know the limitations, and they are:
    1.  The entire stack must have the same IOS versions;
    2.  The stack speed will drop from 20 Gbps (2960X) to 10 Gbps because 2960S has been set to run only at this speed; and
    3.  You cannot have five or more in a stack if you have a 2960S as a member of the stack.

  • Verizon Lowered My Provisioned Speed/ Keeps Selling Upgrade Then Cancelling

Hi- I've got a very annoying problem...   I have Verizon HSI DSL.   I've had it for 5 years.   About a year or two ago I upgraded to package that allowed me 7Mbps, which was perfect.  The package was has HSI Advanced.
When I got the email about only having a month left to make changes to my account without home phone service I decided to call Verizon to check if another upgrade was available.
I was told no, but that I was being overcharged and the rep would adjust my bill.   Without my permission she switched me to HSI Enhanced, and I now have 1.1- 3Mbps.  Less than half the speed as before, for $1.50 less per month.   To top it off, my old plan is no longer available.
Here's the kicker: Verizon says my line is provisioned for 3Mbps and no more, and they will not budge.  But, I signed onto their site on Monday and noticed a new tier-ed pricing option that would get me 10Mbps.   I made the selection and placed the order.   I called to follow-up because the service ready date was a few days away, and I wanted it faster and they cancelled the order and told me that I can only get 3Mpbs.
On Wednesday the option to upgrade appeared again!   This time I called Verizon and a customer service rep gladly upgraded me to 10Mpbs.    In the meantime the tiered pricing has disappeared from the site and the upgrade is cancelled once again.
I have a feeling that Verizon took away my service, and will offer it back to me when I'm forced to get a home phone line.   Just wondering if anyone is aware of how I file a complaint with government agencies, consumer protection bureaus, etc. in the meantime as I'm just beginning my research on the matter.
Verizon is absolutely incorrect here- they keep insisting that my line is provisioned for 3Mbps and then admitting that I started the month with 7Mbps.     Something is fishy and I need help!

If DSLReports were online I'd show you a few example threads of what might be part of the problem here. Unfortunately they can only serve results up to 2010 right now due to some critical database issues they are having, so the threads I'm looking for won't be accessible.
Either way, in the past few months at DSLReports I saw a bunch of threads prop up where people had 7-15Mbps speeds on an upgraded CO, had absolutely no problem but when they went to make any change to the account, or even just something overnight with no speed change, they found their line speed significantly slower (from 10Mbps for example to 3Mbps. Huge drop). The members posting those threads have had mixed luck in getting the speed restored. Some have had it restored only to have it go back to 3Mbps over time. Some have been unable to do so because their "upgraded" CO had run out of capacity and a stop-sell was placed on anything above 3Mbps. Those who had it, kept it, but any change to any line would result in a downgrade. This all comes at a time where FiOS is being pushed harder to transition people from DSL to FiOS (I can't fault them on this, but I'm still waiting for them to complete their buildout where I am!) and where the DSL network is also seeing it's limits in capacity after adequite upgrades and foresight have been neglected. I've always wondered if Verizon made a mistake in trying to offer higher speeds and are trying to turn back on it or if they really don't care about how the DSL service operates as long as it works and people continue to use it. Without seeing their corporate policies for this topic verbatem I wouldn't know of any more exact answer for you than the above.
That's the short and sweet version of those missing threads. So, right now I don't know of any alternate phone numbers, but if you play around with the phone menu a bit you might be able to get into different queues. Technical Support and Billing will point the finger at each other saying the other team needs to adjust provisioning. In reality, Billing does have the ability to put tickets in for speed adjustments, but if you're going from 3Mbps to 15Mbps or vice versa, you should never, ever, require a package change or price change as it's the same darn package, no matter how old your package is unless you're on grandfathered pricing or some sort of protection plan. Technical support also has the ability to put in speed adjustment tickets, mainly those for downgrades in speeds if they think speed is a problem, but they should also have the ability to put in upgrade requests as well if they cannot do the change themselves. It's going to take some effort. You could try Live Chat though as I've heard of some success through that.
