Mixed aspect ratio project -- best setting in iMovie

I am creating a new family project in iMovie (8.0.6) -- a "through the years" compilation of video clips. The older clips were shot in 4:3 on miniDV tape; the more recent material was shot in 16:9 HD flash memory.
What aspect ratio should I choose when creating my new project for the best results? I will probably output to DVD and view on HDTV. Thanks for any advice, Jeff.

I would use 16:9 for your project.
Then, for your 4:3 clips, open the inspector to the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tab and select "Fit".
This will give you letterboxing on the 4:3.

  • Mix Aspect Ratios?

Is it possible to mix aspect ratios in an iDVD project? I'd like to have a 16x9 menu, a 16x9 movie, and a 4x3 slideshow, since all my pictures are 4x3 and I'd like to avoid windowboxing.

Normally the answer is no. You cannot do this in iDVD. But I'm wondering if it might be possible to add the 4:3 as a QT Movie to the DVD Rom contents of the iDVD that was created in 16:9 thereby allowing you to do this when playing back on a computer.
    Just an idea.....

  • Mixing Aspect Ratios

I have been using IMovie for a couple of years and decided to make the jump to FCE. I am currently in the process of putting together a training video and am having difficulty mixing some of the 4:3 ratios with the new 16:9 clips. I have a basic understanding of Anamorphic settings(at least I think I do) and have gone out and bought Tom's FCE 4 editing workshop book. While it has helped out a lot with understanding the concepts of FCE 4, I still can't figure out a solution.
Forgive me because I am not very knowledgeable in a lot of the movie production terminology or concepts but I am trying to learn. This is what I am doing. I have shot a lot of new footage on my cannon using 16:9 aspect ratio. This is HD and looks great. I made a training video in the past, burned it to DVD, and am now trying to use some of that footage from the old DVD that was made in 4:3 ratio. I have ripped it down as a .mov and stored it on my external hd.
If I wanted to make the video using Imovie, the process is very simple. I choose 16:9 under project properties and the 4:3 footage is automatically altered in such a way that it looks pretty good and mixes well with the 16:9 hd footage.
I have tried doing the same with FCE 4 using easy setup and while there are so many settings to choose from, I was wondering if there is setting that does what Imovie does so easily? I know I can change the aspect ratio under the motion-distort-aspect ratio but it doesn't look nearly as good as it does on the imovie program. I also know I can directly change the size of the clip in the canvas but even that doesn't look as good as Imovie's conversion.
I really want to use FCE because I can see it as offering so many more options but this is something pretty important that I need to be able to do. So basic recap...I want to easily be able to convert 4:3 aspect ratio footage to mix in with 16:9 and export it all to a 16:9 dvd.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks Tom,
Unfortunately it seems like IMovie produces the best results with minimal effort for what I need right now. Too bad since I spent the money for FCE. Great book you put out though. While I have you, I was reading what you were saying about using multiple monitors. I am using a year old 24" imac that I maxed out the processor and memory abilities when I bought it. It runs FCE pretty well. I have another monitor(Sony) that I would like to set up so I could have it designated for everything rendered. Do you know how or even if this is something I would be able to do? Or is multiple monitors something that can only be done on a Mac Pro?

  • FCPX DVD of 4:3 Aspect Ratio Project Cropped on Widescreen TV

I have imported some older standard video clips (640X480) into Final Cut Pro X. When I burn a DVD of a project based on those clips, I have a problem playing the DVD on a widescreen TV. Instead of displaying the correct 4:3 aspect ratio, the video fills the screen, cropping some of the image. However, the DVD plays properly when viewed via my Mac Pro. I never had this problem using the same clips in iMovie projects. In iMovie I could set the project properties to “Fit in Frame” rather than “Crop” and the resulting DVD would play the proper 4:3 aspect ratio on a widescreen TV, with black spacers on the left and right of the video image. Unfortunately Apple phone support has not been able to resolve this problem. Any suggestions?

The Video Properties indicate NTSC SD format. However, I noticed that that gives me 720X480 resolution. Perhaps that's the problem.
OK, I just experimented and when I choose "Other" under video properties format, then I get the correct 640X480 resolution. Let me try another DVD burn with this change, and report back whether that corrects the issue. Thanks for pointing me to double check that.

  • Aspect ratio problem with AVCHD in iMovie 08

I am importing footage from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 into iMovie 08. the footage gets in there fine and looks great EXCEPT that the footage (all shot in 16:9) is squashed a little bit. in the preview clips below, it looks fine, but in the player above (and if I export it as a Quicktime file) it is squashed slightly. there are black bars above and below the footage, and (I'm guessing) were the video stretched to fill the entire area, eliminating the black bars, it would be the correct aspect ratio. I've tried importing footage form the camera supposedly shot in 4:3, and the same thing happens.
I know that I can simply do a quick edit in imovie, export it, import it into final cut pro, and stretch it back. however, I'm worried about losing quality, and more importantly, I don't know the exact ratio, since I can't even figure out what imovie is doing to the video to make it squashed, let alone in what manner.
the footage from the HDC-SD9 is AVCHD, and I understand there is something about square pixels vs. rectangular, but I don't know much about it. I have tried every iteration of imovie's limited aspect ratio settings, and I can't get it to work. I know it's meant to work well with AVCHD, so I'm assuming I'm missing something fundamental and simple. (some box to check to let imovie know I'm importing AVCHD?) it's maddening to see the footage correctly in the thumbnails, but squashed for (seemingly) no reason in the playback. can you help me out? otherwise I am going to film myself holding something that is a perfect square, then import it to imovie, then export to quicktime, then import the quicktime file into finalcut, then stretch it til the rectangle becomes a perfect square, and write down the settings for the future. seems ridiculously complicated, especially for the mac world.
I love imovie 08 (seriously, some of the new toys are just so amazing, and no render time at all!), and I love this camera. please tell me they can get along!

I think I'm having a problem similar to this. I'm using a Sharp MiniDV camera, and shooting in 16:9. When I used to import to other versions of iMovie it worked fine, but w/ iMovie 08 it is squashing and stretching the incoming video to more like 20:9 (I have no idea what the actual ratio is, this is just a guess). I tried changing import to PAL 25fps, but that didn't do any thing. Any other suggestions?

  • How do I control aspect ratio and pixel dimension in iMovie 10

When you created a new movie in iMovie 9 the program would ask if you wanted 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio and when you saved the movie it would ask about the size of the file and pixel dimensions.  How do I controll these in iMovie 10?

I think they screwed up - but I have solved the problem by deleting it and reinstalling version 9.0.9 which you can get from the support at http://www.apple.com/uk/support/mac-apps/imovie/
Frankly I don't see the point of Theatre and I don't use iCloud so reverting back to a version that actually works seemed a good option!

  • Solving iDVD problems with mixed aspect ratio input.

I have been trying to create a DVD with a compilation of slideshows. The slideshows are of mixed vintage and were created with various software. The older shows are 640 x 480 and 720 x 480 and the latest were created for my Apple TV with 1240 x 720.
During the creation of the DVD, the test runs looked fine, but when the DVD was played the 4:3 AR shows were stretched to full screen. I tried making the DVD in 4:3 ratio and in widescreen. The TV is widescreen.
I searched the forums and even e-mailed David Pogue (no reply) after reading his iDVD book. My solutions came from this forum and I would like to thank the contributors. I cannot name them because I cannot reproduce the same query and the clues I found, were not always a direct response to the topic.
The results I hoped for, were to have the 4: 3 ratio slideshows play in a widescreen window with black bars on the side. The two solutions I found from the forum were as follows:
    1. Using iDVD, Add the 4:3 aspect ratio slideshow into iDVD as a slideshow and not as a movie. This uses the slideshow formatting to add the black bars. It appears it is OK to add video instead of slides. The 16:9 slideshows were added as normal movies and the DVD worked as expected.
    2. The second solutions (from this forum again) was to create a single slideshow containing all the mixed format shows, use Garageband to add show markers, and output to iDVD. I used Fotomagico, which allows movies to be included with photos. The results were fine and I had two DVDs that played as I expected.
I want to thank those people who cantribute their time and expertise in these forums. I was one of many who benefitted from their posts.

  • IMovie iDVD Incorrect aspect ratio of movie within dvd

This query has previously been raised elsewhere in the forum but the proposed solution looks quite complex for an iMac novice like myself.
In summary the movie looks fine when previewed in iDVd however, when burned to disk and then played on my DVD player the sides of the movie have been cropped.
Is there a 'simple' solution to maintaining the original aspect ratio of the footage from iMovie to iDVD?
    Is there any s/ware available?
    Thanks in advance

Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!

  • Premier Elements 7 aspect ratio problem, XP

I bought this program from a famous online store in UK and when I installed it I was unable to change the aspect ratio for my production. I got in touch with the trader who said they could not help me with this and gave me my money back, without asking for the disc back. I got in touch with Adobe and got stuck because the product key was invalid, yet I was able to register it okay. The software was sold online with the description of being used yet it came in a sealed paper disc envelope, with no box. I am not sure what to do now. Any ideas? Can this be fixed?

    Charles,
As for the Aspect Ratio, this is set via Presets.
Since you are in the UK, I will assume that you will want PAL. In the opening dialog, when asked for the Project, you should only have a choice of New and Exit.
Choose New and you will be taken to a dialog box where you name and locacte your Project on your system. Look at the bottom for Settings. You will get another dialog box, with NTSC and PAL Project Presets. Choose PAL and then you can choose DV, Hard Disk, etc., and HDV. Select the appropriate one and choose Save as Default. You will then get a Project screen with the workings of PE. I do not think that it is much different for PE7 (I have PE4). Some of the names, or terms might be a bit different, but that would be all.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Aspect Ratio Sort and Export (File Naming)

When I crop my photos, I sometimes find that some photos work best in the 4x5/8x10 crop and others in a 2x3/4x6 aspect ratio.
Issue #1) How can I sort and find all of my images with a specific aspect ratio?
When in the Library module and setting up a filter (ctrl+f), I don't see any way to filter and sort out my aspect ratio. In the "Metadata - Label" filter fields, there is an "Aspect Ratio" value however the only options are Portrait and Landscape. (more of a photo/page layout than 'aspect ratio' to me)
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options (just as presented with "r" is pressed for resize) in the Library Filter Metadata. **
Issue #2) How can I include the aspect ratio of the image (e.g. 4x5) in the exported file name?
I don't see any way to to do this either, so I have to manually find all of the images with the same aspect ratio first, then set a Custom Name field for export and export each ratio at a time.
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options to the file naming fields available for selection when exporting images.  Values like "4x5" and "4x6" would be great to be able to include in the filename of my images.
    Regards,
    Brian

  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio Questions

I am designing a Keynote presentation for use on a Akai plasma TV with a native resolution of 1024x1024 (16:9 aspect ratio). I set my presentation to 1024x576 in Keynote; I am assuming the TV will display my presentation correctly, and the 576 pixels designated in Keynote will simply be spread out over the 1024 horizontal pixels on the TV, correct?
Secondly, when I do change the Slide Size in Keynote, the main editing area correctly reshapes to 16:9, but the slide masters and slide previews on the left seem to resize, but remain trapped in a 4:3 box with two black lines above and below. This seems to be hard-coded into the Keynote application, or I can't figure out how to adjust this. Should I worry about this little detail?

I started by creating a presentation based on the "White" theme. I did not see a "Black" theme, however.
The black bars ONLY appear on the left Navigator section... the main slideshow work area and the end presentation on the TV show up correctly, with no black bars to be seen. So really, I am happy with the end results; I am simply worried about the way Keynote is displaying the slide thumbnails in the Navigator and if that means something important (it could be that the Keynote developers simply made the thumbnail 4:3 and any other aspect ratio gets scaled down).

  • Trying to get Anarmorphic footage in 16 X 9 Aspect ratio from PAL footage

Hi, I am currently doing some tests - having bought a new camera, the HVX-201 AE. I was trying to get a 16 X 9 Aspect Ratio on my finished test footage. I shot using DV Tape, using several options, the squeeze, letterbox and normal. I then captured using DV PAL Anamorphic..
On the timeline, it looks fine, with grey on top and below, with no black letterboxes, except for the section with letterbox format on. However, when I export to Quicktime, using the DV PAL 48hz Anamorphic codec, it keeps being saved as a quicktime file with 720 X 576 resolution. Is there any way for it to be 16 X 9? Do I have to use another codec or will it always be in a 5:4 aspect ratio no matter what I do?
Or is it that when a TV which can play in 16 X 9 detects it, then it shows up as a 16 X 9 picture?
Thanks for the help. I'm really confused.
    Cheers.

That's what anamorphic means, it's a 16:9 image stored in a 4:3 frame. You maintain that throughout the post process and any dvd creation in order to utilise the maximum resolution available in sd. When you author the dvd it flags the footage as anamorphic, telling any dvd player you play it in to output it appropriately according to the way it's set up. If your dvd player is not set up properly for the monitor it's connected to it won't work correctly and you'll either see a vertically stretched image with no letterbox (4:3 monitor with dvd player set for a 16:9 monitor) or you'll see a vertically squashed image with narrow letterbox (16:9 monitor with dvd player set to 4:3. In this case you can get the correct aspect ratio if you set your tv to one of the 'zoom' settings; normally the next option after 4:3 as you cycle through the options, but you are then throwing away roughly 25% of the available resolution and the image will be a bit softer.)
In DVDSP you can set the simulator to mimic various set-ups in order to check how the disc will behave before you burn.
If you just want to create QTs then Nick Holmes advice is the way to go.

  • Setting movie aspect ratio in iMovie 10.0.4

Im trying to set a specific aspect ratio of my new movie, but I cant find any way to do that. I see help docs that say you can choose the movie format when you create the project but the latest version of iMovie 10.0.4 seems not to offer that feature any more. Nor can I edit the movie format at all anywhere as far as I can see. When I export the movie I have only a very limited set of options all with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Is this feature no longer supported?

It is possible to change the aspect ratio and it doesn't need to be in widescreen. I found out how based on another forum. Here is the answer on how to do it:
    1) Select a clip in the timeline.
    2) Select the "Adjust" button at the top of the window.
    3) Select the "Cropping" adjustment (the two right angles that form a square)
    4) Select "Fit"
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/movies-video/313345-imovie-10-0-4-960p.html#pos t1594108
I do find it annoying that when you drag a clip to the editor that it automatically changes the aspect ratio and you have to change it back.

  • Export Problem: imovie 06 - HD project to Quick Time in wrong aspect ratio

When I export a project from imovie 06 that is in HD 16x9 aspect ratio, (simple export using "High Quality") the resultant QT movie is not in the correct aspect ratio - it's in "regular TV" format.
Is there a simple fix for this?

    david,
did you ever find a solution? i have the same problem....
    thanks,

Please advise as to best setting to accomplish this.

If it looks good on your tv it will look good at the cinema.
The resolution will still be 720x480/576 if a dvd player is hooked up to the projector.
