Mixed drive formats in StorEdge L100

Hi,
We are running a TSM service attached to a Sun L100 tape library.
Our wish is to upgrade the library's tape drives from LTO2 to LTO3.
Our ideal solution would be to upgrade only half (3) of the tape units to LTO3, leaving the remaining drives on LTO2.
Can this be done? TSM can handle the mixed media in the library, so from an application point-of-view this is fine, but can it be support on a hardware level?
thanks in advance

You seem to be asking if the LTO-2 tape media is compatible with the LTO-3 drive type.
the answer is yes.
The problem is attempting to mount LTO-3 media in an LTO-2 drive after LTO-3 compression ratios have been applied. The best thing
to do is to create an LTO-3 media pool, and make it so only the LTO-3 drives can mount tapes from it. Without knowing your TSM,
I can't tell you how to do this, but most products allow something like this.

  • Hard drive formatting problem

    Hi there,
I've been stupid and I'm looking for some advice.  What happened was I went and tried to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac, had a problem with the installation process and whilst in the Windows installer, I ended up screwing up a partition which has ended up as free space which OSX disk utility won't let me format, delete or repartition.  It won't work either from within Mavericks or when booted from either a recovery disk or a USB drive Mavericks installer.  I've got everything backed up so a complete hard drive format is fine, in fact I already tried that, so starting from scratch might be easiest. If anybody has any ideas how I could fix this I'd be grateful.
At the moment the drive is showing four partitions, Macintosh HD is 2.5TB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s4 is 314.6MB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s6 is 134.2MB OS Extended (Journaled) and Free Space is 499.98GB Free Space.
    Macintosh HD is working fine.
disk1s4 I'm unable to delete, merge or reformat.
disk1s6 is between a rock and a hard place, because...
Free Space is just flat out unusable.
    System is 27" iMac 3.5GHz Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 3.12TB Fusion Drive
Any help would be appreciated, I'll try not to screw up this time...
    Thanks,
    Kev

    Hi malevolus,
It looks like the partition map of your iMac’s fusion drive is corrupted. Fortunately since you have a backup of everything, we don’t have to worry about data loss. Reformatting of a fusion drive does require some special steps though. See this article -
Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive

    Troubleshooting
The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive.
If your system will not start because you see a flashing question mark or another alert:
Press the Power button and hold it down to power off your system.
Press the Power button again. After you hear the startup chime, press and hold Command-Option-R to start up to the Internet version of Mountain Lion Recovery.
A globe should appear with a "Starting Internet Recovery" message. It is now OK to release Command-Option-R.
A progress bar should appear and Internet Recovery should start and ask you to select a language.
Once you select a language, click Disk Utility in the window that appears and then click Continue.
If your Fusion Drive can be fixed with Disk Utility, you'll see a Disk icon with red lettering. Click the disk icon.
A dialog box appears offering to fix the Fusion Drive (shown above). Caution: Clicking Fix will erase your Fusion Drive. If you have a Time Machine backup of your Fusion Drive Mac, see Mac 101: Time Machine for information on how to restore from a Time Machine backup once the drive has been erased.
              8.  After the process is complete, the volume will change color to black. Quit Disk Utility, click Install Mac OS X, then click Continue to reinstall OS X                         Mountain Lion.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Premier Elements 7 - confusion over mixing video formats

    Hi
I have been using a DV camcorder (SD quality) for some time, originally recording in 4:3 format, and more recently in 16:9 format (as we bought a wide screen telly).
I have just treated myself to a new AVCHD Panasonic video recorder recording High Definition footage in 1080 16:9 PAL format onto an SD memory card.
I wanted to take all this footage and put it on my computer to edit it together and start making some films to keep for the future - on DVD for now, and at some point on Blue Ray. To this end I have just purchased Adobe Premier Element 7.0, with Photoshop Elements 7.0 bundled together.
My confusion is that it appears I can only use one format in a "project" as I need to define the parameters for the "project" in terms of SD vs HD and 4:3 vs 16:9. I was hoping to be able to store all of my footage of various quality definitions and screen ratils into a "library" (which I see is called "Organiser" in Adobe terms) on the hard disk, and then pick and choose from the "library" what to put into each "film project" as I make them, mixing formats as I wish. I realise that in this way, the output would itself switch from 3:4 to 16:9 etc on accasions as I switch scene to use a different format, and so may not appear to be the smoothest edit.... but I thought that would be my decision to do if I wanted it. Instead it appears I cannot mix a few minutes if 4:3 SD footage of my son as a baby, with more recent 16:9 1080 HD footage of him as a boy - which is a real shame as it is what I wanted to do....
Have I misunderstood, or am I right in thinking I am limited in this way?
Why can I mix still photos of any format with video , but not mix different formats of PAL video?
    Many thanks

    Thanks Paul
I have been having go, as you suggest, and as you said, I cannot edit my AVCHD footage in Scene mode as it has 5.1 audio (which I cannot change on the videocam) This is very disappointing as I really wanted the simplicity of the scene editing rather than timeline.... This is compounded by the fact that timeline editing seems even more complicated than normal as each new AVCHD clip I add is placed onto a different video track (not all on track 4 as you thought)- so it is real mess to work out on my screen.... Is this a bug, the way PRE treats 5.1 tracks - or is it just oversight and poor design? Do you think it might be addressed by Adobe?
Anyhow, thanks for explaining what is going on, as without your warning, I would have assumed that the PRE 7 sceneline feature was broken - you would have thought there would be some warning / documentation from Adobe about this, as effectively, a big feature is now unavailable to me as an AVCHD user - and the product claims to be compatible with AVCHD!
Would you be able to advise on a couple more of my "newbie" file format questions?
How do the settings work between setting the initial PROJECT format, and then choosing the various OUTPUT (sharing) settings. For example, if I want to edit a project using AVCHD clips only, and output it to DVD quality to watch on a PC or burn to DVD disk, do I get the same thing if I set the project setting to PAL AVCHD High Def 1080 5.1 and then the share setting to DVD quality output, as I would if I set the project settings to DV 48hz and the share setting to DVD quality output?
My ideal would be to retain the High Definition of the footage through the editing process and then be able to output to DVD quality now, but to be able to come back to the finished edited project in the future and choose to output it to Blueray when I have upgraded my TV and bought a blueray player. i.e. I am trying to make my filming and edited projects a bit futureproof....
Finally, I am just not up enough on all the different format lingos (Mpeg1, MPeg2, H.116 etc) to know what I should be choosing from the list for:
    1) outputting edited footage to burn onto a DVD to be used on a DVD player
    2) outputting edited footage to save onto a PC to view in the best possible quality on a PC
    Do you know?
    Many thanks

  • I have noticed that when using Tigers Dosk utility to ERASE a flash drive I have a choice of FAT but not FAT32.  It seems that flash drives formatted as FAT do not work properly when trying to copy files from a Windows machine.  Why?

I have noticed that when using Tigers disk utility to format an external USB flash drive I only have the choice of FAT ( when formatting for use on a Windows machine ) and not FAT32.   I have found that USB FLASH drives formatted as FAT do not always work on Windows machines.  Why?  How can I use Tiger to format for FAT32?

I think it depends on the size of the Flash Drive as to whether it uses FAT16 or FAT32.
Can you format it FAT32 on the PC?
Other options would be NTFS or Mac OS Extended...

  • HELP!  Urgent need of info on External Drive format for iPhoto!!!!!

OK, I am running out of space on my MacBook's internal 80GB drive (funny, when I started I thought that was huge, lol). I got an external 500GB GForce, and love it. When I got it set up I found that the FAT32 works with the Mac OS X, and I should still be able to access those files from a Windows system. Turns out I am going to need that because I am going to need to ship my MacBook to Apple for repair (unrelated issue), and the only other system I have to be able to access any of my business's mission-critical data will be a Dell with either Windows or Linux on it. I have found a few discussions here, tho, that mention that the drive needs to ve formatted in a Mac format "or else". WHY???? Is this really an issue, or no longer with the Intel Mac & OS X? I have copied files to the External drive, and seem to be able to access them OK. Oh, in case it matters, they are jpg.
Please HELP!!!!! My panic is that one of my businesses is photography, and I can't afford to loose any of these pix! Apple tech supp told me he can't find any documentation that says what the drive format must be, but then they can't figure out why my system keep shutting itself down without me having to ship it back to them, so I don't have a warm fuzzy about that, lol.
    THANKS!
    Andrea

    breathe joy:
There's a way to have your photos on the external drive but have a library on your Mac using iPhoto 6's alias mode. That keeps the bulk of the file size off your Mac. I have 17,600 images (27G in size) on an external HD and my library is only 1.6G in size. Check out these Tutorials on how to go about setting it up. The caveat is that the PC user, as JMEH pointed out, should not work on the actual files but save any edited versions to another locations. Those files should be read only for all users.
    Do you Twango?

  • External drive format to be used as iTunes library and media folder

Hi everyone, I want to transffer my iTunes to an external drive, do I need to format my external drive to Extended Journal or will an Appleshare be alright? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, good! I only asked because I read that if you transfer you iPhoto Library you need to have your external drive formatted to Extended Journal so I thought that it might be the same for iTunes. And I only read the post after I started to transfer the iTunes to an external drive. Thanks again!

  • Moving TM to new drive- will old drive format copy to new drive?

    Hello,
I'm moving my TM backup to a new (larger) drive using Disc Utility. I've read the posts and know what to do, BUT... if I click "erase" and do a "restore" to move the data, will this make the new drive have the same format as the old drive? I tried a restore without clicking erase, and the operation failed.
Old drive: APM; Mac OS Extended (journaled)
New drive: GUID; Mac OS Extended (journaled)
I'd like to keep the new drive GUID if possible.

I Googled what GUID means, (globally unique identifier) and it seems to be used in the Windows world and is a 128-bit number associated with components, applications, files or used in databases even cookies, etc.
Could someone explain how this pertains to setting up a new drive for us Mac users using Intel Macs as referenced in this thread?
Does it pertain to the hard drive name we choose or a setting in Disk Utility that I overlooked?
You didn't look far enough. It's also, as posted, the name of the *Partition Map Scheme* used by OSX for Intel Mac internal HDs, and preferred for external HDs attached to an Intel Mac.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUIDPartitionTable
Most drives formatted by or for Windoze use the MBR scheme (Master Boot Record). That's why most problems with new drives as destination for Time Machine backups fail; they must use the GUID *Partition Map Scheme.* See the instructions in item #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac

With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac. The record contained files windows. How to recover?
Serious mistake: to connect a Mac to an external drive with data (important!) Windows, the warning appears: "You want to use the disk for Time Machine?" Wrong button, so in 2-3 seconds, the disk is formatted. Now Mac "sees" the disc but empty, Windows does not see it under "My Computer" but in "Disk Management" is reported as "hard core", "healthy", "GPT protective partition" Is there a way to retrieve the files? Sorry for my English Thanks

I'm having a difficult time following, I understand English isn't your native language. You may have good luck with Google Translate.

  • Hard drive format for sharing

I've trying to set up a Mac and PC network using an Airport Extreme Base Station. What hard drive format is supported by both Windows and Mac OS? I'm switching over from a PCs so most my extermal hard drives are NTFS, but it seems that Airport Extreme isn't able to share this format over the network.

I've found that many people have similar questions, but I still haven't seen the direct answer.
In particular, I want to know which format is easiest for the Airport Extreme to share over a network, which both PCs and Macs will have access.
I would like to share my iTunes library over the network, as well as DIVX films, plus I will have InDesign files that I need to work on both on the PC (running Windows 7) and Macs.

  • Created document on Mac Air Pages, saved it to USB drive formatted to ExPat but on Windows 8.1 desktop, this file came up as a JPEG image.  Any ideas please?

I created a document on new Mac Air 11.6 Pages and saved it to a USB flash drive, formatted with ExFat.  However, on Windows 8.1 desktop, this shows and opens as a JPEG file rather than in MS Word.  When I try to open it with Word, it cannot be edited.  Any ideas please?

Of course Windows (Office) can't open a pages document.... you have to save as word or export to word.
I took it for granted you knew this (that's my fault). Each word processor has it's own language (programing). Saving the pages file to a disk and putting it in a windows machine then opening it is like someone mailing you a newspaper  or magazine in a foreign language you do not read and wondering why you only looked at the pictures.
Not only are you new to Apple it's now apparent you are unknowledgeable about using and understanding technology.
This is basic stuff... Some classes or books on how to transfer/exchange files from one application and operating system to another will help you... or ... just stick with one operating system and applications.

You will need to use a third-party program, you computer's iTunes can only copy iTunes purchases back (File > Transfer Purchases, File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). There are a number of programs listed half-way down this page which you could try : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
