Mixed environment 10.6.4 and 10.5.8 servers

We have three Intel Xserves running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard server. One is an open directory master and the other two are replicas. The three servers main duties is AFP/network homes with a mix of other services.
We have two older PPC G5 Xserves that we replaced with Intel this summer.
We still want to use the older servers in some capacity. I am still learning, and was not sure about mixing server operating systems.
If I would add the PPC servers, the 10.5.8 server is the highest operating system we can install. I do not believe, they cannot be OD replicas with 10.6.4 correct?
So when setting up the old servers, I think there is an option to just add the server to the directory. Is this what I want to do?
Can I have network homes on the old servers? Would I use WGM on the newer 10.6.4 servers and then point the home folders to the AFP shares on the older servers.
Will the network homes on the older 10.5.8 servers play nice if the client computer is running Snow Leopard?

No, they can not be replicas

Yes. They become "domain members" much like workstations, but all services are Kerberized, much like connecting a Mac server to AD.

Yes. All that is required in AFP and proper domain binding.
Will the network homes on the older 10.5.8 servers play nice if the client computer is running Snow Leopard?
Yes. The dependency is AFP. 10.5.8 and 10.6.4 AFP appear to play very nicely together.
Hope this helps

  • Remote desktop connection limit in windows 2003 administration as well as in the mixed environment of windows 2003 and 2008 servers

RDP protocol i.e. Remote desktop connection is configured to perfrom and manage  software administration of ORACLE application and database servers which runs on windows 2003 server.   Two sessions are allowed on each of these servers for database
    administrators. The question is:
    a) if network administrators who perform window server administration (50+) are included in
2 sessions limit or do they manage all these servers through Console Session which is separate from the remote desktop connection limits of 2 sessions.
    b) How is the 2 sessions  limit prescribed by microsoft (more of a licensing limit) handled in the mix environment of windows 2003 and 2008 server where all these servers are managed on the VMWARE?
    avnish sharma

    Hi Avnish,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
By default any windows server will provide 2 remote session for administration purpose only. No matter which administrator is accessing that server. If you will connect the console session then 3.One server is accessed by 3 Session (console + Remote +
Remote). When the particular server reached this limit then any working administrator will receive a message to log out as other user trying to access the session or if we had provided the setting then new user is restricted to login.
If you want more than 2 remote desktop session than you need to purchase TS\RDS CAL, install TS\RD Licensing role, activate it first and then configure CAL on it. There are 2 types of CAL available (USER & DEVICE). You can purchase CAL according to your
    company requirements.
    Hope it helps to understand!
    Thanks.

  • Mixed Environment Physical Win 2008 and Virtualised Win 2012R2 [Where is the Virtualisation Group!]

I am upgrading from a twin physical DC environment on win2008 (not R2) to fully virtualised DCs running 2012R2 on HyperV 2012R2. I know there is a risk running both
DCs on a single box but we don't currently have a choice. The idea is to migrate to 2012R2, then to add in an azure server and demote one of the other two to a single member server. i.e. 2 DCs. one on premise and one on Azure.
However, due to the risk of running the only 2 DCs on a single box, I was thinking perhaps to keep a physical DC on 2008 in the meantime.
    I have two questions:
Q1: 2012 and above protect from USN rollback by using VM-GenerationID,
However, if we keep a 2008 DC, will this still work or do the FSMOs need to be raised to 2012 as a minimum for VM-GenerationID to be effective and thus we cannot maintain 2008 servers.
Q2: If I have both DCs on a single host and shutdown the host, the two virtual servers will be saved. I just want to be sure that these will both
come back online safely when the host starts up again and the VMs power back up without me having to shut them down first. (I’m guessing that Virtualisation safe covers this eventuality) I had a USN rollback in the past after accidently leaving the network
cable plugged in after splitting a raid1 and powering up the server to do some disk maintenance! I never want to repeat that!!
    Many thanks

Q1: You do not need to raise the functional level od the domain. The hypervisor needs to be a supported one for VM-generation ID to work (Hyper-V 2012 R2 and Vmware esxi 5.1 (I am not very sure of the vmware version)) do support this, of course the schema
has to be upgraded for 2012/R2 domain controllers.
You can keep your 2008 R2, however for the virtual DC clonning you need to have the PDC on windows 2012 or later operating system and another DC to have it as source for clonning.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831734.aspx
Q2: The default automatic stop action on hyper-v is to "save" the virtual machine state. Now of course for DC this is no good, but being on a supported VM-generationID hypervisor I think you should be ok (if that happened just for a short
time),although you can set to shutdown guest OS for the VM when hypervisor shutdown.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mixed environment of icloud incompatible and compatible devices, and Address Book

Hello, iCloud is driving me crazy when it comes to Address Book.
I have a Mac Mini and a Macbook that are running 10.7.2
I also have an iPad running 5.0.1
I also have an old iPhone and old iPod Touch that are not iCloud compatible.
Ideally, I want to sync the iPhone and the iPod Touch on the laptop via the cable to keep my stuff in sync. I would like the iPad to sync over iCloud - and would also like the mac mini to sync over icloud. The laptop is sort of driving.
Right now iCloud is working between the laptop and the ipad after following these instructions. Probably also working on the Mini but haven't checked.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16712296#16712296
The hard part is the iPod and the iPod Touch.
Right now they "sync" but the result is that the address book hasn't actually been updated.
How do I make my other cabled devices sync correctly as well?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I can't fully tell from the information you have provided, but I suspect your duplicates resulted from having one set of contacts in your "iCloud "account and another set of contacts in your "on my Mac" account.
I further suspect that you have then deleted the contacts from your "Icloud "account, and thereby removed them from all devices. You now need to copy the contacts from your "on my Mac" account back to your "iCloud" account and delete the originals from your "on my Mac" account. You can do this by selecting groups, selecting your "on my Mac" group, and then selecting all the contacts within it and dragging them onto your "iCloud " account.
You might also take a look at this User Tip, to ensure you understand the differences between the different accounts in Address Book before adding the contacts back.

  • Mixed environment with Cisco 3750 and SRW248G4

    Dear Community,
as mentioned above in the subject field, we are evaluating Linksys for Business products.
We are using Cisco products (i.e. Cisco WS-C3750G-12S-S) for core networking, due to new investment planning, we are evaluation how to upgrade our access switches.
In fact, we would like to implement Linksys by Cisco products,  SRW248G4 specific. These devices should be connected over fibre cabling using Linksys by Cisco MGBSX1 optical modules.
So for these reasons, I have to check, if this design is going to work. May you give any feedback to this?
    Thank you in advance.

    Ni hao Seng,
    Without an understanding of what you are trying to achieve I can however say the following;
I have used the wonderful SRW platform (SRW2008P) in my network for two years now. I have no difficulty in setting up VLAN tags and trunking to a traditional Cisco equipment.
Most of the problems I have seen is not understanding how to setup VLANs correctly.  I can appreciate that as VLANs took me a long time to understand.
I think for the benefit of the good people out there that use this community, I should put together a Video on Demand that goes through creating a VLAN that shows how to setup VLANs on a SRW switch, taking into account the three modes the switch ports can be set in (access, general and trunking modes).
    regards Dave

  • 7920 and 7921G mixed environment

Hi Team, have you any experiences with both 7920 and 7921G in the same WLAN? My Customer is using WLC440x w AP1242. How to Configuree the SSID Parameters regarding QOS and CAC, have you any hints? Thx, Regards, Michael

The big issue here is with CAC/TSPEC.
The 7921 gives precedence to TSPEC over QBSS for CAC as TSPEC can be utilized for inbound and outbound CAC, where QBSS is just for outbound dialing.
4.1 release for the Cisco WLAN controller has the load based CAC feature. This means it will account for all traffic and energy on the channel, not just the # of TSPEC clients on a given AP.
So if wanting to enable CAC/TSPEC in mixed environment of 7920 and 7921, would want to ensure you use 4.1 release and enable load based CAC.
If 7921 will be in G mode, it will send out the CTS to self for G protection, which the 7920 will adhere to.
The other is capacity. If you have calls at 11mbps or other 802.11b rates, then capacity will get reduced.
Typically can get up to 10 RTP streams per AP @ 11 mbps and up to 20 calls @ 24 mbps or higher.

  • Mixed Environment: Wintel and Unix

We are currently looking into implementing HFM in a Mixed environment, Wintel and UNIX. The Web Servers and Application servers will run on Wintel; however, we are thinking of putting our Reports server in a UNIX environment. Are any of you running HFM in a mixed environment? We would appreciate any feedback...Thanks,Doug

From what you post about trying different things I would delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat

  • 802.11n greenfield in a mixed environment

we plan to have mixed 802.11n deployment coexistence with a/b/g clients. But we want to have some classrooms or labs to run greenfield only where people request 100Mbps bandwidth to transfer large images. What is the best practice to design some small greenfield areas in the mixed environment? And what is the best way to prevent 802.11a users to associate to our 1140s?
    Thanks!

  • Running Portlets in a Mixed Environment

We are running Oracle9iAS Portal on an HP Unix box. We have noticed that many of the third party portlets like Business Objects, and SiteScape are only supported on NT and Sun Solaris, and some on Linux and Compaq Tru64 Unix. Although they are not explicitly supported on HP-UX, would they still operate on HP-UX?
Alternatively, is it feasible to run these portlets in a mixed environment of NT and HP Unix? If the portlets are only supported on NT, then we would need a seperate instance of Portal on an NT box to support those portlets. Would we have to run two versions and instances of the 9iAS Application Server, and if so, would we have to run seperate instances of the Portal schema also?
    so,
    1) Is it feasible to run two instances of Portal and perhaps have the information on the two different servers (NT and HP-UX) be synchronized?
    2) Or would it be possible to share the HP-UX Portal schema between the 9i Application Servers on both NT and HP-UX?

    Henry,
Thank you for the thought. The windows machines are connected by wire to the LAN. At the moment, we are only supporting wireless for apple products.
I have spent a significant amount of time on this issue since the original post, and have concluded that my original plan is untenable. For this to work the way I had hoped it seems I would have to establish a central DHCP server and not use the "Distribute IP Addresses" capability of the AEBS. The subsequent question is, will wireless apple computers pick up a DHCP IP address in this setup?
    Thanks again.

  • File web links in mixed environment

We're deploying macs on a pretty large scale in a mixed environment, and there are many internal sites that use the file:// header to link to files. Being windows -specific, this only works in Internet Explorer.
Is there an alternative to use with Firefox? I'm sure we could if/then the links for the different operating systems. The file servers are not running web services or ftp, unfortunately, so we would be limited to samba use.
Thank you in advance for any help that can be provided.
Powerbooks   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   also use Minis

Here's an update on a possible solution. Firefox, by default, has local file viewing (file:// links) disabled. This can be enabled, and if the correct Windows directory is mounted, then it can be accessed on OS X by created a link such as
    file:///Volumes/servername/dir/file.extension
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   also use Mini

  • Mixed Environment?

I am wandering about having a mixed environment for next september. Right now we have mostly G4 emacs/iMacs and iBooks. The iMacs are to slow to run leopard but the emacs and most of the iBooks meet the requirements for leopard. Our servers will be upgraded to leopard and we currently use OD/AD for management/authentication with network home dirs. Is there are problems with having client machines running 10.4.11 and 10.5.3(4?) and users going in between them?
    Thanks
    -Will

I've got 60+ machines running both 10.4.11 and 10.5.3, bound to both AD and OD. Even my servers are half 10.4 and 10.5.
The desktops are running 10.4 due to Digidesign (ProTools) and the servers are running 10.4 due to FileMaker Pro.
Now, there a couple of odd things you will see: Once a user logs into a 10.5 machine, he will have a downloads folder created. Also, if iCal is being used, (or really any of the iLife aps), I had some trouble getting everything to cooperate without all the latest updates.

  • Since upgrading to 7.0.3 (iPhone 5 64gb, with iTunes Match enabled) all of my music wiped off my phone.  Downloading it again, most of the artwork has been mixed up with other artists, and I'm no longer able to stream or download over 3G? Any ideas?

Since upgrading to 7.0.3 (iPhone 5, 64gb, with iTunes Match enabled) almost all of my music has vanished from my phone (weirdly some hasn't).
Downloading it again, most of the artwork has been mixed up with other artists, and I'm no longer able to stream or download over 3G (all tracks greyed out), though my network settings etc are all set correctly.
Lastly since upgrading to iOS 7.0.1 (and beyond) Genuis has become effectively useless: it continually asks me to connect to wi-fi, and if I do it creates playlists mostly composed of tracks by the same artists or those very obviously linked to them- previously it created brilliant, nuanced playlists.
Are these things connected, and how do I fix them?

I have done this on numerous occasions but I think that my Iphone has a defect. After many tries, reinstalls, deletion of content, changing content to be stored on external hard drive, deleting itunes and cleaning computer I managed to get all of the songs on and things seemed okay for a while.
The problem returned about a week ago after downloading a new album from Itunes. I now have 12.5k of songs leaving 10gb spare on Iphone which should be more than enough room to operate properly. Last night it seemed to be dowloading ok (after doing all of the above again for the umpteenth time) this morning it revealed that it had just synched 2.5k of songs and 18gb of "other" on the contents bar. it wont synch now as it says its over capacity. So the 18gb of "other" would probably be corrupted data that means it must corrupt each song as it tries to synch it.
The 2.5k of songs it did synch are working on the Iphone as is every song in the library on Itunes. I did completely delete the new album I bought and redownloaded it from the store then tried to synch just that album and it worked fine.
Just about time to dump apple I think!

When opening a pdf document in Adobe Reader the font of the original document is changed....It becomes a mix of the original font and a new different font. How can i fix this

This issue occurs with most of the PDFs that I open up. I am using the latest version of adobe reader on my windows based machine and it is a general PDF. I saw a similar post online stating that if you look at the fonts used in the document and it doesn't say (Embedded) next to it, then Adobe Reader will try to pull the font(s) from your computer and if it doesn't find that font then it will replace it which makes it look funny.

  • Can I mix docs from document feeder and scanner glass into one PDF?

When working with the HP Scanner software, prior to Windows 8, I was able to MIX the source of my documents, meaning I could put all the standard size docs on the document feeder, scan them, and then ADD non-standard sized documents, one at a time, to the same PDF from the scanner glass.  The Windows 8 Scan and Capture software seems to make me pick one or the other.  It was SO convenient, when doing my expense reports, to be able to scan 15 pages or so using the ADF, then use the glass for all of my receipts that were small or damaged.  Am I missing something, or is the Win8 software more limited?  Thanks for any help you might provide!!

    Hi ysroq,
Welcome to the HP forums! I see that you are wondering if you can mix docs from document feeder and scanner glass into one PDF. I am happy to help, I have a couple questions for you:
What type of printer do you have? To find your printer's Product/Model Number follow instructions in this link. Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
How is the printer connected? Wireless or USB?
