Mixed fonts when exporting ePub file from InDesign

I am an ePubs newbie and have been watching some of the training videos on Lynda.com and  tried creating my first ePub document today.
I am having problems with mixed fonts when exporting the file and viewing on iBooks on an iPhone.
I have a document with paragraphs of text to be in a regular weight and certain words within the paragraphs are to be picked out in bold. So I've used a Paragraph Style for the main text and then used a Character Style to pick out the bold words. Simple enough!!
On export I am not embedding any fonts as I have unchecked that option on the export dailaogue. I have used the same font family in InDesign, but I cannot work out why I am getting both Serif and Sans Serif fonts displaying when viewing it on the iPhone. The main body appears in the Sans Serif font, but I have the bold character styles, subheads and even the numbers in the numbered lists are all displaying in a Serif Font.
In iBooks I can change the display font (I have the choices: Georgia, Iowan, Palatino, Seravek and Times New Roman) and this affects the fonts which are displaying as Serif, but the main body font remains constant as a Sans Serif (looks like Helvetica).
I would ideally like all the fonts in the document to display as Sans Serif with certain words, plus the headings and subheadings to be in the bold weight version of the same font family.
I've tried this in CS5.5 and CS6 with the same results.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please.

Hi Steve,
Yes, you are correct. It is Anne-Marie Concepcion's videos that I've been watching.
I understand what you are saying about testing in other readers and I will be looking into that further. However our main task is to get some of our client's manuals and documents into a digital version that can be read on  Apple devices, as these are what are being used by their sales force.
We have already produced some documents for use on the iPad and have used iBooks Author for that with some success. They have now asked about getting something onto iPhones, so we are now looking into the ePub format to do that. I realise that ePubs can also be used on iPads, but we would still be pushing the iBooks Author files for use on iPads as there is more interactive widgets that can be included. But the main ePub reader that will be used is going to be iBooks, so we are looking to get something to work in that App. Other formats may follow, but we are starting with getting something to work on iBooks first.
I have tried viewing the file in Adobe Digital Editions as you have suggested and have to say that this displays the file in a way that is certainly more appealing, as the fonts are at least consistent. However, I understand from Anne-Marie's videos that ADE is rather basic and is only intended as a rough proofing device. Which is why I transferred my ePub to my iPhone and iPad to view in iBooks.
As I have mentioned, I am a total ePub newbie. I come from a mainly print background and my knowledge of CSS and HTML is very basic. I have an understanding of the concepts, but I would always rely on developers to produce websites that I may have designed.
You seem to be implying that it may be in iBooks where the issues lie and from viewing the file in ADE this would certainly look that way. So I am simply trying to establish what I would need to do to make it work in iBooks in a more satisfactory way.
I have included some screen grabs below to illustrate my problems...
ePub viewing in ADE
If it looked like this on the iPhone I would be relatively happy!!!
ePub on iPhone
The main body copy is displaying in a sans serif font (Helvetica?) yet the heading, subheadings, numbers of the numbered lists, address, URL and legal line are all displaying as a serif font. All the style sheets are assigned to the same font family in InDesign (Helvetica). I have managed to get the bold text to appear in the sans serif font, by mapping the character style to the "strong" tag in the Export Tagging dialogue. All other paragraph styles are left as "Automatic".
I can change the font in iBooks and this affects the displaying of all styles apart from the main body, which stays consistently in the "Helvetica" font.
iPhone Fonts
iPad Fonts
On the iPad I'm also getting some elements coming in justified which looks awfull (see the main heading above). This image also shows how changing to an alternative font changes the heading and subheadings, but does not affect the main body!!!
Any suggestions???
Thanks

I'm having a problem exporting files to pdf format with the optima font. It looks okay in indesign (preflight reports font status as okay)

  • PDF Bookmarks - Change Default Width When Creating PDF File from InDesign

When creating a PDF file (from Indesign CS4) I automatically create the PDF bookmarks based on the InDesign document's Table of Contents.
But by default the width in the bookmarks is always set at "Fit Page".
Is there a way to change the default to "Fit Width" in Indesign before the PDF is created?
It's too much trouble to change every bookmark in the PDF after it's created.
Thanks for any help in advance!

Thanks, Steve. I have actually previously done what "fogharty" suggests and it does work if I want to set the pages to "fit width" or a variety of other options. However, none of the options is inherit zoom which is what I, and many other from the sound of the thread, need and want. We want to respect our end users--not dictate how they must view our PDFs. Hopefully, Adobe will listen and make this option available soon.

  • Cannot overwrite PDF when exporting to Acrobat from InDesign CS6

When exporting to Acrobat Pro X from InDesign CS6, there are times when I want to overwrite an exising file but I get an error msg that the file is in use (it is not--this even happens when I have closed the file and quit Acrobat) or i don't have permission. In the Info panel at the Finder, i see that "myusername (ME)" does have permission to read and write this file. As a test, I also changed the permissions for Admin and Everyone to Read & Write, but that did not help. I've checked Preferences in both InDesign and Acrobat Pro anc can't find a relevant setting.
To save the file with the same filename as the pre-exisitng PDF, I have to close the pre-exisitng PDF and move it to the trash.
I have no problem overwriting a PDF document from Acrobat. This only happens when I am exporting from ID.
I am on a Mac running the latest version of OSX.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Carol Gunn

Make sure that the PDF you are trying to overwrite is not selected in your finder. I've found that if it's selected in the finder then the preview tricks Indesign into thinking the file is busy

  • Acrobat (10.1.3) crashes when exporting a pdf from InDesign (7.5.2)

So every once and a while I export a file to pdf from InDesign and Acrobat crashes.  Sometimes it doesn't crash until I reduce file size.  It always happens when it is actually saving the file.  Usually I am overwriting a file with a newer version but not always and either way I get a crash.  I copied my crash report below.  Please help.  This reduces my productivity greatly.

I'm going to leave this open here in case anyone has some ideas, but since this is an Acrobat crash (it looks like it might have something to do with security), you should cross post in the Acrobat forum.

  • SWF animations not working properly when exported as PDF from InDesign

I'm using InDesign CS5 and have created a document that I want to add interactivity and animations to. I've created buttons and page destionations, etc, which all work perfectly  when exported to a PDF but the simple animation that I wanted to include don't work. The animations have been created in InDesign then selection exported as a SWF file and then imported and placed in InDesign and then exported as an interactive PDF where the animations either don't work, haven't been picked up or don not work as they should. What am I doing wrong, how do I get the animations to work correctly?

    Try this tutorial:

  • Can you retain text highlighting when exporting to PDF from InDesign?

    Hi,
I have several publications that are now going to be reviewed by another individual and I was planning to export them to PDF.
However, I've already highlighted bibliographic references, table call outs, figure call outs in the InDesign file using different colors and I was wondering if there is a way to retain that highlighting when exporting to PDF? Just thought it might make their life a little easier since I already have all that done in the file.
    Thanks!

Ah ha! Got it! All I needed was your prompt! I looked to make sure that it was set up as conditional text and noticed the Show/Hide option at the bottom of the pop-up. (I knew I saw something before that would allow this, but couldn't remember where!)
    Thanks for jogging my memory!

  • Is there a way to automatically set the file name in Acrobat Properties when exporting a PDF from Indesign?

When I used Quark to make a PDF, the title area in the PDF was automatically populated with the file name, there in the properties tab. We like use this area to confirm file names of original files, so we can keep track of drafts, (in case the file name of the PDF is changed, which our boss often does). Is there any way to set up InDesign to do the same?

    @stadlock – I think I know what you mean…
You exported to PDF and changed the file name in the export dialog to a different one from the document name presented there the first time you exported that document. And in exports after that the new name will be presented in the dialog instead of the name of the document.
What you can do against that?
    1. First time you want to export: Save before the document is exported. And do not save after it's exported with a new file name.
    2. After the new file name is already there in the export dialog:
Type in the document name in the dialog. Export. Or abort after chosing a export preference. Save. Check again, if the document's file name is in the export dialog. If yes, procede like in suggestion #1. If not do a full export with the document's file name, save and then procede with suggestion #1.

  • When exporting eps pages from InDesign 5.5 how can I make them be T1.eps T2.eps instead of T_1.eps T

While building special tabs for my job, we have to turn in the pages for print with a very specific filename system. It's complicated so I'll try to explain...
    page 1 must be T1.eps
    page 2 must be T2.eps
unfortunately when I click to export the pages to eps InDesign insists that it add an underscore mark in there.
    T_1.eps
    T_2.eps
    etc.
is there a setting that I haven't located yet that explains to InDesign that I do not need/want that underscore in there?

Not that I know of. I assume it's scriptable, but instead of writing a custom Javascript export tool I usually use something like Bulk Rename Utility to enforce that kind of naming convention.  (Mostly because my four biggest clients each have their own complex and idiosyncratic file-naming conventions. Scripting it in ID would take more time and be more failure-prone for me than using an already-existing free utility that has regex support and eighteen million options.)

  • Is there a page size limit when exporting a pdf from InDesign?

My indd file is 201x40 inches with a 1.5 inch slug. When I export to pdf I get this message, "The document page size exceeds the page size range supported in PDF files. Exported pages will be resized to fit within PDF limits."

Although the PDF spec mentions that it's feasible to create a PDF as large as 15,000,000 inches in either direction, 200 x 200 inches is Distiller’s limit for PostScript. It’s based on the Windows printer driver limitation.
If I read the quote below correctly, the maximum page size is 15 million inches (381 km).
"This is from the PDF Reference 1.6:
    177. In PDF versions earlier than PDF 1.6, the size of the default user space unit is fixed at 172 inch. In Acrobat viewers earlier than version 4.0, the minimum allowed page size is 72 by 72 units in default user space (1 by 1 inch); the maximum is 3240 by 3240 units (45 by 45 inches). In Acrobat versions 5.0 and later, the minimum allowed page size is 3 by 3 units (approximately 0.04 by 0.04 inch); the maximum is 14,400 by 14,400 units (200 by 200 inches).
Beginning with PDF 1.6, the size of the default user space unit may be set with the UserUnit entry of the page dictionary. Acrobat 7.0 supports a maximum UserUnit value of 75,000, which gives a maximum page dimension of 15,000,000 inches (14,400 * 75,000 * 172). The minimum UserUnit value is 1.0 (the default)."

  • Printing an exported PDF file from InDesign

I have exported a few documents form InDesign to PDF. When I print the documents, some parts get cut off (top section or bottom section) but there is still room on the paper. I'ts like the printer decides not to print those sections. I am printing on 5x7inch paper and all my documents show their sizes as 5x7inches.

Here is an image I think might help... When I choose any of the size options, (fit, actual size, shrink oversized pages, or custom scale) it prints the doument exactly how I see in the preview whether or not I have the "Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size" box checked.

  • Disable printing when exporting to PDF from Indesign

Hi  I need to create a T&C form which will be emailed out to clients, the sales team have requested that this should be readable but not printable as a PDF in a small step in saving the environment. I actually achieved this last week and now for the life of me cannot work out how to do it again. Would anyone be able to help?  Many thanks, Claire
NB: unchecking the 'Print Layer' in the Layer Options box does not work, sadly neither does ticking the 'Nonprinting' option in the Attributes window. I have a feeling it was something in the export dialog box but definitely not a security ermissions option as the PDF I created last week doesn't require a password and yet won't print.

If you're hoping to prevent a PDF document from printing with sneak-around backdoors, you'll be disappointed.
Anyone who breaks an expensive scanner platen glass by placing or dropping a CRT monitor on it, when following Eugene's illustrated example, might be permanently dissuaded. Making a screen shot with the computer's own tools, or a camera's phone is easier and safer.
If your hope is simply to always prompt the user to reconsider killing trees needlessly, it may be possible to intercept a print request made from the Acrobat display software in use at the time (Acrobat, Reader, Web browser window, Mac Preview, etc.) and display an alert to think about printing before proceeding. If this kind of print request can't be intercepted, you could consider creating a button in the document labeled "Print," but which displays an alert and gives the option to proceed or cancel. Perhaps there a script solution for what you need.
If your hope is to make it as difficult as possible for someone to print a PDF, consider converting text to outlines and/or incorporating a patterned background behind text, to disable easy Optical Character Recognition, and to "contaminate" graphics. However, a clever Photoshop user might be able to minimize the graphic pattern.
NOTE: Enabling Acrobat's security to disable screen readers does not disable the ability to select and highlight on-screen text, but it does prevent copying the text to the clipboard.

  • Hyperlink rollover when exporting to PDF from InDesign

I am creating an interactive PDF in InDesign. The first page has links to different URLs. I would like to change the text that shows up with the rollover text over each hyperlink when viewed as a PDF. It shows the URL automatically, I'd like to write the company name associated with each site to make it look more streamlined. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

  • Exporting EPS files in InDesign CS3 takes FOREVER!!!

When exporting a file in InDesign it takes up to 10 minutes per page to export a file in EPS form. I am working on a server, but co-workers are doing the same thing and they do not have the same problem. I have noticed that it seems like the files with links in them take the longest. Meaning... if I have just a text file it will export very quickly like it should, but if it has a linked file it will take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes to export. Does anyone know what's going on?

Can you make the problem go away by working off the network? Just because you're the only one having problems doesn't absolutely mean the network isn't the cause of the problems. And because these kinds of problems come up all the time with people who work from a server, the network is the obvious place to look first.
