Mixed format media into FCP X and out to DVD

Hello FCP users,
Could someone please advise me on the following.
I want to combine and edit two movies (one of which is only showing a clip on the second screenshot)) with different formats (as shown below) in Final Cut Pro X and after that export the result to DVD, to be watched on a HD TV. (PAL)
I've used MPEG Streamclip to convert both to ProRes 422, 720x576 for import into FCP X, but is that the best option for getting the best results?
Thank you.

Both are codecs FCP X will recognize.  Just import them.  If your Mac is slow with them, Optimize them with FCP X.  When you create your Project, click the Custom button and chose the PAL settings you'd like.  Edit away.  No reason to make everything the same, but it will releave strain on your iMac.  And no reason to use anything but FCP X to Optimize them.

  • Can't import Media into FCP X

In the last week or two when I try to import media into FCP X I end up with a very dark and locked import screen.  The only way I can recover is to force quit FCP X.  It doesn't always happen but it is getting more and more frequent.
I have not updated to Marverik and I'm running the latest version of FCP X on the same iMac I have used since installation.
Any suggestions beacuse it really is starting to beome very, very frustrating.
    Thanks

They system is hanging up, waiting on some command to finish, which is not able to.  So let's look at ways to fix this.  Becasue you never want to do an upgrade to fix problems.  Only upgrade a proerly working system.  Otherwise, you may just be hauling old problems into a new envoronment, and making things worse.  I've seen it a lot over the years.
First, verify that all of your drives have at least 15% of their total capacity as free space.  Not enough free space on any dirve can cause similar odd behaviors.
Second, you need to do some housee cleaning.  Start by downloading and running the free application "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCPX preference files.  It is easy and safe to you.  None of your media or projects will be touched.  After that, run Disk Utility to "Repair" all of your drives (ignore "Verify", total waste of time).
If none of that helps, I'd recommand you download the free application "FCS Remover" from Digital Rebellion.  Use it to uninstall FCPX.  Some folks say to just move the app from the Applications folder to the Trash.  That leaves a bunch of other files hanging around that could be bad.  Use this app.  Once you've uninstalled FCPX, launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, and FCPX will have an "Install" button.  Reinstall a fresh copy, see if that helps.

  • Importing Avid Media into FCP

I am taking media from an Avid Adrenaline system and want to bring it into FCP to cut. However, the disk w/Avid QTs won't appear on my desktop. It plays fine on the Windows-based Avid (XP, I believe), but my Mac won't see it. I've tried downloading Avid codecs and putting them in my Quicktime Library as recommended by the Avid website, but that doesn't seem to work. I've been told I should try exporting out of Avid using Sorenson or H.264 codecs. Anyone with experience on this so I quit wasting time?
    Thanks
    IMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) FCP 5.0.1

Actually, my experience was that it was QT 7.1.6 that broke the version of the Avid codec I had been using before, not a particular FCP update. I have not tried the codec linked to earlier in this thread.
I have noticed a unique color shift in both luma and chroma when importing Avid codec clips. It takes two color correction filters to correct for this, but I have saved this pair as favorites, and can apply them at the end of the edit.
I would much rather import the clips than recapture, as we're talking about days of recapturing, as opposed to a couple hours of importing. If I can get the codec supported, and I know how to correct for the color shift, I have no qualms about using the Avid media. My question has more to do with whether I will be able to see individual clips in the finder to attempt to import, or whether the media files will be in some format QT and FCP will not recognize, and if so, whether there is anything I can do about it. I don't expect any of the Avid logging info to come along, and I know that even if I were to have Avid editor export a batch list, a reconnect would likely be impossible, and I'd be looking at recapture.
If it were a question of simply creating new QT wrappers on the files, we'll be up against another shortcoming of FCP - the Batch Export process does nont allow the creation of reference movies...
Anyone know about what the Avid media folders look like in the finder?
    Thanks much -

  • Canon XF 305 media into FCP problem

    Hello
I used two XF 305s on a shoot yesterday and then ingested the files with Log and Transfer into FCP. Worked fine with the 3 cards from one camera but Log and Transfer didn't see any of the 3 cards recorded on the second camera. I tried to add them manually but got an error message saying the folder contained unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. The cards are viewable in Canon XF Utility and seemed to have the same properties as the 3 cards that worked.  I tried making a backup and transferring that in FCP but same error message. The only way i can get them into FCP is to export to MXF and bring them in with XDCam transfer which doesn't seem to support anything bigger than 2 gb and the audio is out of sync. Frustrating day!!! I'd be SO grateful for any answers or guidance!
    Thanks
    Deborah

    Hi Deborah,
I don't mean shutter speed, I mean framerate, two different things. If you shot 50 frames per second (50p) as opposed to 25 frames per second which is 50i, Log and transfer won't recognise the clips.

  • Importing stills into FCP 7 ( and why Im seeing interlacing) HELP!

I have just started a new project in FCP7 and I am importing stills from photoshop (tiffs) Its for the opening sequence and they need to move as in key framing.I notice that when I view them on my monitor at 100% I see a jagged line as in interlacing. My questions are...
    1. What size do I import the stills (Im working in HD and my footage later will be PAL)
2.How do I remove the interlacing...I tried de-interlacing but the images blur too much)
3.These stills are illustration images not photos and have very hard edges
Im a little new to all this....Someone told me to change my settings to proggresive (how and where do I do this?)
Any help would be great....Im good at making the film I just such at the technical stuff...thanks in advance..philip

Hard to give an answer without some background. Decisions about sequence settings depend on what yours or your client's objectives are for the movie. Where and how is it going to be shown? What other kinds of material will be edited into the movie? Has it been shot yet? Will it all be from the same kind of camera – or in a common format?
Whatever the answers to those questions leads you, select the easy setup that comes the closest to what you need. Take a video clip that has been shot at the desired format and make that the first thing that you edit into your timeline, If FCP asks you whether you want to have the sequence match the clip, say yes.
FCP has to turn whatever stills you give it into clips. If they are too large and there are too many of them your editing experience can be a real chore. If there are no keyframed moves, bring them into FCP the same size as your sequence resolution. For those that are keyframed, re-sizing in PS to about 150% is a good choice. Avoid going over 4K on either axis.
Undoubtedly, they'll look better – especially with keyframed moves – if they're in a progressive sequence. If you need your movie to be interlaced, wait until you export it and are able to judge it however you intend to display it (Web, TV, projector, whatever). If you then decide it needs de-interlacing, do that in Compressor (or maybe JES De-interlacer).
    Good luck.

  • Motion TITLES into FCP / Why blocking out the video track?

Perhaps it's because of a Studio upgrade? - But when I layer TITLES over a video track it blots it out with a black background.
In other words, rather than see white titles over video, I only see white titles on black. I can reduce the opacity of the titles, and see picture. But that reduces the opacity of the video too....This is a new glitch...Any ideas why it's happening? - Thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

You're outputting titles made in Motion over video in FCP ... correct? If so, are you inadvertently adding a black background in Motion?

  • Capturing a VHS tape into FCP

    Hello
I have a short VHS tape I need to get into FCP-6 and onto a DVD.  I have my old Canopus ADVC-100 so I know the hardware.
My question is can I record directly to the timeline or do I need to log and capture?  Reading the manual says something about 'capture now' to capture the entire tape.
Do I just connect my VHS player to the ADVC FW into the MAc Pro and go into FCP?
    Thanks
    Allen

Yes, you use the NTSC preset... I think you could also use Apple Pro Res as the compressor... it will look slightly better then NTSC DV... You simply Log and Capture... as you mentioned, just hit Capture now then hit Play on your VCR....
I do suggest though not capturing the entire tape in one session. Incase there is a glitch and you waste 45 minutes of recording... divide it into 15 minutes stretches. (I am speaking of experience)...

  • Importing Windows Media file into FCP

  • Passing Text Formatting Info. In and Out of Flash

    Hi all,
We need to develop an application that involves formatted
text. We want to use dynamic text, where we pull in text from an
.as file at runtime. But when we do that we don't have the ability
to format the text. Are there ways (or tutorials that describe
them) to feed formatted text into Flash dynamically and still
preserve the formatting (bold, italics, text color, etc.). Our
ideal scenario is to have a web form (Flash or HTML-based) that
    allows for formatting options (bold/italics/underline/text
color/size ,etc.), that we can store in a database, that we can
later connect to from Flash, where we pull in the formatted text in
    at runtime.
Am I smoking crack? Can this be done? Any ideas on best
    approaches? Tutorials?
    Thanks!

    1. create a text file .
    2. in the text file create a variable (e.g. info=)
    3. follow the variable with the HTML formated text.(e.g.
<B>This is some formatted text in Bold
Type</B><P>This is a new paragraph with normal
    text</P>)
    4. in the flash action panel create a LoadVar. (e.g.
    var myLv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();)
    5. Load your variable: (e.g.
    _level0.myLv.load(yourtext.txt);)

  • Import video and audio from a dvd into FCP

Is there an easier way to import video and audio into Final Cut Pro - I am playing it on a DVD player and making a digital tape of it. Then logging and capturing it into FCP.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes, there are a few ways that are faster. Have a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3465691
You could use software, such as "streamclip", or import by plugging your camera into your capture device and hooking your capture device into your computer and capturing by non-controllable device settings.
    Good Luck

  • Cannot import video files into FCP

Every time I try to import a file (.mov , .mpg , .m4v) FCP gives me an error message reading "File Error: File Unknown" If I try and import through the drop down menu, the error reads "File Error: 1 file(s) Recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
The only file that seems to work is a .avi
This started happening when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Please Help

    Here's a couple solutions ...
I had this problem this week as well. Suddenly I couldn't import any type of media into FCP. After trying a few things like reinstalling FCS 2 and talking to other people, I called up Apple Support. They walked me through a few more efforts to solve the issue or at least get an idea of what causes the problem.
What we discovered is that when I created a new user profile for my iMac and logged into that profile, everything in Final Cut worked fine. I could import media with no problem. THUS, the issue seems to be connected to my computer profile. So I was presented with two options:
Option 1: Create a new user profile and either migrate all my content over to it or simply edit from that profile.
Option 2: The Nuclear Option. Back up all your content you don't want to loose, pop in your OS X disk, restart the computer holding C, and select the option to erase your hard drive and install OS X from scratch.
I figured that after two years of a **** of a lot of editing and other work on this computer, it was time to just go for the Nuclear option and obliterate everything off of it and start fresh. Takes a while to do, but I've just confirmed that I'm able to import media again in FCP.
So, sadly it's not a real simple option like deleting your preference files, like other FCP issues, but there is way to clear up this issue. The important thing to note here is that reinstalling FCP didn't work for me, and doing an Archive Install of OS X which still keeps my user profile essentially intact also keep the problem intact and solves nothing.
Now, if you have to get a project your editing out the door right away, just create a new profile and get busy editing. But once that project is done, or if you have the time right now, I think the best option is the Nuclear Option. Back your stuff up and then clear your hard drive out and start anew.
I hope that helps guys. I know how crazy I was going not finding anything on a forum to help me out.

  • Importing a .flv into fcp

Is it possible to import an .flv into fcp? and if so, how?

You need to convert the flv to a format that can be imported into FCP. You can use with MPEG-Streamclip to convert the flv.

    And it's free!!!
Quicktime Pro can convert the video but not the audio.

  • FCP-X audio out of sync

Help, I'm in trouble. I'm trying to finish a year-end video of Kindergarten kids. I've shot them with my normal video camera as I've always done (Canon GL-2). In past years I've used FCE and FCP. After a drive failure, I've upgraded to a new 27" iMac with FCP-X. As I'm learning my way through it, I've come up against the wall with this problem. I've downloaded the video into FCP-X and when i set my in and out points and pull them into the timeline, the video and audio are not in sync. The voice starts slightly before their mouth starts moving. I've not done anything with the clips. Did I need to change a setting before downloading? Please help as I don't want  to disappoint the kids and their parents.
    cheers,
    Jack

    Hi Luis,
Yes, the audio was recorded at 48kHz.
    Codecs: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Linear PCM
    Audio Output Channels: 2
    Audio Samler Rate: 48kHz
    Audio Configuration: 1 Stereo
    Camera Name: Sony DV-VCR
Here is some additional information I though may be pertinent last nights and I've not been able to sleep very well. The footage was shot on my Canon GL-2, but because I do not want to abuse the heads, I use a small Sony DCR-H52 camera for the input into FCP-X.
Also, as these are firewire (400) cameras and my new iMac does not have firewire ports, I've had to use two adaptors going from FW-400 to FW800 and then a second one from FW800 to Thunderbolt. Could I be getting this "lag" because of the adaptors?
    cheers,
    Jack
I don't think the adapters would be the cause for audio getting out of sync.
By the way, from your first message it would appear that the problem happened only when editing into a timeline.
It now seems to me that it may be related to the import itself. Did you try any of the following:
    1) Play the imported videos in Quicktime Player and check if the audio is out of sync there (would suggest that the audio lag is introduced when importing)
    2) Import using a different piece of software - e.g., Quicktime Player itself, using the "Record Movie" command. Does this import also cause audio lag? If so, my prime suspect would be the camera used for import (or some discrepancy between that and the recording camera).
    3) Import a small portion using the Canon camera. Does it show audio lag?

  • Mixed formats in timeline

    Hi,
I'm editing a piece that's being shot with various cameras and formats.  Most of the footage is Quick Time 960x540,16 bit.  A smaller amount of footage is AVI 640x480, 8 bit.
When I put the AVI footage into Quick Time, what should I export and save as before importing into FCP?
And, what should I set my Sequence Settings to so I don't have to render too much footage in the Timeline?  I don't see a 960x540 option.
    (I'm working in FCP 7)
    thanks!
    Eve

well it's a 16:9 format.  Is your 640x480 material 4:3 or 16:9 widescreen, which means it's anamorphic with the display of the 640x480 image stretched horizontally?  If this material 4:3, you have to decide whether you want your sequence to be 16:9, in which case you either have black bars on the left and right of your 4:3 material or you could scale up your 4:3 material to fill the frame and lose the top and bottom part of the frame OR you can make your sequence 4:3 and "letterbox" the 16:9 material (black bars at top and bottom) or scale up the 16:9 material to fill the frame and lose the material on the left and right.  Remember scaling up will cause you to lose quality.  If you decide on a 4:3 standard def sequence, you should be able crop your 16:9 "HD" material to fill the frame and this sounds to me like the best solution.
I would use compressor to convert all your footage to a single fcp friendly format before editing.
Before you go any further,  what is your end use?  This should help decide the best way to proceed.

  • Capture into FCP

Hi Guys, Im currenly using a decklink extreme capture card with the new mac pro. The file sizes are massive at the mo. Is it possible to capture into a lower format dirrectly into FCP. Something like a h264 codec or do I have to capture in 10bit uncompresed.
    Owen

H.264 is a delivery codec, not one used for editing. But sure, you have MANY options open to you. DV, Offline RT are the lower quality ones.
