Mixed linux-solaris-array possible?

Hello,
we want to swap our server from solaris to Linux. Now I try to build an array with primary centos and secondary solaris server for testing. If I use the centos for primary if get the "Can't contact the server" errormessage. If I use the solaris for primary my admin username was not accepted.
Any idea?

Centos is not a supported OS (even though it's based on RH).
You can have mixed OSes in an array as long all the servers are the same version of SGD.
Are you using DNS and fqdn for you servers? what does
$ tarantella status --verbose
show for each?

    I know you can
    1. ssh to a Mac machine.
    2. VNC to a Mac machine.
Is there a way to connect from Unix to MacOSX ? Something like XDMCP to Mac machine.
    Requirement:
    1. GUI Login to MacOSX in a new session, from Unix.
    Or
    2. Open a Xcode window running from MacOSX, in my Unix machine
    ? Is there a way ?

(may be repeating, but please VNC/ssh, is not my option).

If the database is remote you would need to setup a sqlnet.ora and a tnsnames.ora file. Their locations are platform dependent. On AIX the files are in /etc while on some platforms you find the files in /var/opt/oracle and on others $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin. We have a Sun Sparc running SunOS 5.6 that has them in /var/opt/oracle.
Configuation can be done through the installer as part of the install process, probably using a gui tool, or manually. We vote for manually.
See your install README files and the ORANET manuals for details. Or once you know where the files belong copy them from a platform that can access the db you want to reach and just remove unnecessary lines for other databases.

  • Solar power - possible, or waste of time?

I've got a 13" Macbook Pro and every so often when out and about I run out of charge after a couple of hours when I can't connect to the mains (I use a lot when importing photographs and editing whist on site).  Does anyone know if the various solar power devices are any good, and if so can you recommend a good one for me to get (ideally one I can carry with me in a pack and doesn't take up a lot of room - I know I don't want much!), or any other ideas on how to get more power when needed??
    Many thanks

Small portable solar arrays tend to have pretty low output. The backpacks linked above put out 4 watts — less than a sixth of what your MBP's AC adapter delivers to a shut-down, no-peripherals-connected MBP whose battery is fully or almost fully discharged. So you could charge your battery with one, but it might take all of a long, sunny day, or even longer. Those backpacks are designed to charge cell phones, not notebook computers.
A better solution for your purposes would probably be an external battery pack or two:

  • Why am I unable to delete the default track (which seems to act as the master, right?) after making a rough mix?  Is it possible to delete the default track after having rendered a mix?

Why am I unable to delete the default track (which seems to act as the master, right?) after making a rough mix?  Is it possible to delete the default track after having rendered a mix?  I did a rough mix and now cannot change the song as the tracks that were a part of the rough mix seem to remain in the song even though I mute the tracks for a new mix.  For instance, I played and recorded a different bass line.  Muted the original, but when trying to create the new mix I can hear the original bass line even though I have muted that track.  It seems to remain in the previous master (default) track.  Please send help.  Thank you.

Before answering your question, you have to make sure you understand the difference between the different track types in GarageBand.
Tracks, you record your music on
There are three types of those Tracks.
MIDI Tracks (aka Software Instrument Tracks)
Audio Tracks (aka Real Instrument Tracks)
Drummer Track (only one per Project)
    Global Tracks
These are the Tracks that can be shown/hidden at the top of the Tracks Area for specific purposes.
    Arrangement Track
    Movie Track
    Transposition Track
    Tempo Track
    Master Track
This Track can also be shown/hidden in the Tracks Area. Please note, you cannot delete that Track, only hide it, similar to the Global Tracks
Regarding the Tracks you record your music on,  you can delete any of those. It doesn't matter if you created them or there are part of a Template (maybe that  is what you refer to as the default track). Once you delete the last Track, the "New Track Window" will pop up to add a new track.
I will explain all that in much more detail in my manual "GarageBand X - How it Works".
    Hope that helps

But one issue can be if storage is in use and disks for some reason are not automounted on reboot then of course database autostart is not prefferable.
If server opsystem is patched (new kernel install, some other changes), then sysadmin could want to just startup server and look is it working, he don't need all those databases to startup. But again it heavely depends what kind of activities sysadmin is performing.
But if everything is mounted on startup, then autostartup of database is just easier for us. for example sudden reboot of server will not disturb us. Databases will be autostarted.
And for high-availability and for all those SLA things - autostartup will reduce downtime.

  • Working with agilent solar array simulators

I will soon be starting a project using several agilent solar array simulators. I'm looking for any info or insight regarding using labview to control them. Thanks in adavance

I took a look at these "solar array simulators" on agilents website. It looks like they have a GPIB interface on them. With this and a GPIB card it should be fairly simple to program for this instrument through VISA calls in LabVIEW. Unfortunately I do not think there is a LabVIEW Instrument Driver for that instrument yet. Because of this you will have to read through the manual and find that appropriate commands required to control this instrument through VISA commands. There is a wealth of information on developing your own instrument drivers in LabVIEW on the NI web page at: httP://www.ni.com/idnet

  • Any bad side-effects to lengthy blocking in native code? (Win32,Linux,Solar

    1) Are there any negative side-effects to having one (or maybe a few) Java threads block for an extended period (e.g. hours) in native code? Naturally the thread would NOT be one of the "special" threads (such as the Swing event dispatcher, etc).
    2) Does the answer vary by platform? I'm interested in Win32, Linux and possibly Solaris (in that order).
    3) What if I scale the number of threads blocked in JNI code up to 100 threads. Does that change any of the answers? This is perhaps a silly number, I'm just trying to understand if more resources are consumed by blocking in the JNI as opposed to blocking in Java.
    4) Do modern JVM's use one native thread per Java thread? If so, then I would guess there is really nothing special about blocking in native code.
Motivation for query -- In my application I need to interface with legacy C++ code that blocks (mostly on socket and i/o selects). I'm not thrilled about native code, but if there are no serious side-effects to extended blocking, it may be a viable approach.

So if the thread 1 needs the code written in the native.dll the thread 1 will use
the first instance of native.dll. So let's say this is blocked.
Then after 2 hours another thread called thread2 calls the native.dll code. Then
java ask the OS to create another instance of the native.dll and so on.
So now there are 2 threads and 2 instances of the dll in the memory.
All these apply to the Win32 OSs.

    Never mind.
It is a known bug documented on manual " [Solaris 10 10/08 Release Notes, Chapter 2 Solaris Runtime Issues|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-5245/chapter2-1000?a=view] " as shown below.
The solution is to apply vold patch [138130-01|http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-21-138130-01-1].
Solaris 10 10/08 DVD Media Might Not be Automatically Mounted by vold (6712352)
The Solaris 10 10/08 DVD does not mount by default during runtime. No error message is displayed.
    Workaround: Perform the following steps:
       1. Become superuser.
       2. Disable vold:
          * On Solaris 10 Systems:
                # svcadm disable -t volfs
          * On Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 systems:
                /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
       3. Mount the media manually by using the # mount -F hsfs path to block device path to mount point command. For example:
          # mount -F hsfs /dev/rdsk/c0t2d0s2 /mnt

  • WLST on Linux/Solaris

    Hi all,
when using WLST, I encounter several problems.
We only use Solaris or Linux for our servers, so please remeber this when answering.
1: where should I place common modules for WLST that won't have anything to do with internal WLST-functions(option parsing, logging, output, ...)
1.1: I have written a few of my own, to account for the lack of existing within Jython 2.1 supplied by Oracle.
2: How can I include modules that use WLST internal functions so that they work, and don't lose their information(connect in a module doesn't stay connected when back in the main program).
    Greetings,
    Peter

That usually happens when you overwrite a file mapped by a process using mmap(). The region of the file the process thinks contains the byte code for YourClass now contains something different.
If you want exising processes to continue to use the old file, you have to either remove it or rename the old file and not overwrite it. After you remove or rename it, the processes that continue to have the original file open will continue to have access to the original file. You then have to create a completely new jar file.

The short answer is generally no.
The long answer is that it can be done but you will need to make sure that on the Solaris 10 machine you only use functions/headers/libraries that are available on Solaris 8 otherwise they will not be found and the software won't work.
