Mixed platform question

I am going to be installing an ExtremeN (via cable modem) in a home with both apple and pc's. Is there anything I should do or know about working with this? I've set N's up with just apple computers in the past. Any WPA issues or just compatibility or reliability issues anyone has had.

The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is compatible with both Macs and PCs equipped with either Ethernet or 802.11a/b/g/n wireless. Most issues arise when using WEP encryption, but usually can be overcome with just providing the AEBSn's Equivalent Wireless Password to the PCs. However, using WPA or WPA2, is highly recommended (as WEP is no longer considered to be secure) and usually doesn't pose a problem for either Macs or PCs suitably equipped.

Mixed platform - PC and (not "or") MAC

Could someone confirm that what is meant when one says that LR can allow you to work on both PC and MAC?
SO if we have LR loaded on my home PC and my portable Macbook Pro, and my LR catalogue/previews/actual picture folders are on a mobile external hard drive any and all changes:
- made to images using LR on my MAC running OS 10 Leopard (such changes which are saved as instructions into the Catalog) when I move back to my PC at home and open the same catalog on my PC (running either Windows XP or Vista) all changed images will be displayed correctly - with the changes incorporated; and vice versa
- made to images using LR on my PC running either Windows XP or Vista (which is then saved back on the same Catalog) when I go on the road and open the same catalgoue on my MAC (running OX 10 Leopard) all changed images will be displayed correctly -with the changes incorporated?
If so ... I must take my hat off to Adobe for creating a true cross platform set of instructions which is stored in the Catalog and previews which can trully be read X-platform (seeing that it took Windows ages to get a true cross platform version of WORD/EXCEL - this is no mean feat).
Can some confirm the above - cross/mixed platform nature of LR?

WebLogic in mixed platform (Win/Solaris)

Hello,
We are using WebLogic 6.1 SP5 on Solaris. Typically, our
configuration looks like this: 1 Admin Server, 3 Managed Servers
functioning as part of a cluster.
We are slowly migrating everything to Windows. My question is till we
are completely on Windows, is it possible for us to run in a mixed
configuration i.e. have the Admin Server running on Solaris and the
Managed Servers on Windows? Or vice-versa i.e. have the Admin Server
running on Windows and the Managed Servers on Solaris?
If anybody has tried this and/or can point me to any information
related to this, that would be great.
Also, what are the things we should be careful about?
Is the WebLogic license for a specific platform i.e. Solaris/Windows
based? Or can we use the same license for both platforms?

Puja,
1) You can have weblogic in hetergenous environment. Just make sure that you have
all configurable paths correctly setup.
2) Weblogic License is specific to an IP address. Either you use the same IP or
submit a request for License transfer.

Lightroom and processing platform question

I have posted a version of this question on PS, but it is LR where it really matters.
Some eons ago, I was a PS user and found my then-current machine had features which PS was not using. Cannot remember the fine detail, we are talking PS5 or 6...
So, now I am contemplating buying a new i7 based machine with umpteen GB of memory and super graphics board. All these raise questions:can LRuse the speed features of the i7, can they use the umpteen GB, switch into the graphics stuff.
I am fed up with the P4 3.2GHz, 3GB, GeForce 9800GT platform I have - it stumbles and makes me wait (.always Loading... taking seconds). will I end up finding things not much better on a platform potentially 50 times faster? Or is 50 times faster just a dream?
If someone replies that their xxx with yyy goes like lightning, they will not be actually answering the question. I want to know if LR (and PS) can use all the bells and whistles available to them as processes - are they 64-bit so able to use the nnGB... etc etc

LR and PS can use multiple cores, perhaps not all 6 if you get a $1000 CPU--I base that on a benchmark that had LR running the same on both a quad and hex-core although no details were available on what the LR portion of the benchmark was doing. LR and PS both have 64-bit editions.
CS4-PS takes advantage of the GPU for certain things, but LR seems to only be sped up by the OS using the GPU more, not LR using the GPU, specifically, itself.
CS5 and LR3 are just around the corner and we don't know everything GPU-wise they will take advantage of, although there are reports that CS5-Premier Pro will only use CUDA (nVidia) not OpenCL (ATI) because OpenCL is buggy, still.
50-times-faster would be a benchmark that can use all the cores to their fullest, whereas LR does some things in parallel but not nearly everything, so the speedup will vary depending on what you do.
I am about ready to build myself a i7 960 machine and expect LR and PS to be very fast on it. I am not sure if I'll try using an SSD or not for the OS. If I go with what I'm leaning towards at the moment, a Gigabyte GA X58A-UD7, it would likely have USB3 on a couple of the USB ports with a 6Gbps speed that a few peripherals can use. It also has SATA3, which is half that speed, but faster than SATA2. I don't know as I will be overclocking it, much, which depends on the cooling setup, so maybe the MB is overkill and I'll go for something cheaper.

EMU 0404 Patch Mix DSP Questions.

This is pretty simple, and I haven't had a chance to really look through the manual completely but one time. I have the system completely setup the way I would like it to run at the moment(althought I haven't hooked up any external instruments for recording yet... other then my turntables) and, I'm working my way through the dsp plug-ins. I find some of them very useful (at least for experimentation for now). I was going to attempt to run a few mixes through the DSP plug ins that come with the mixer, but I'm not excatly sure how that is supposed to work with this system. Now, here are my questions:
I currently use logic audio, and I was wondering which way I can impliment these plug-ins into my current setup.
I also have an old version of Sound Forge. I normally do not use it much, but I was wondering if anything that I applied to the dsp mixer is automatically applied to any recording that I play. So if I put a plug-in for 3 band EQ, and then record in Forge/Logic, the same settings will automatically apply to each program during recording. Or are these plug-ins only applied to playback? And if it is only applied to playback, I would assume that I can not automate any of the settings. Or if I can, what program(s) would I have to use to automation the settings?

Set up a mixed platform wifi sub-network with restricted network access

Hi,
We're considering a Time Capsule for our office, but we've never used one and have a few questions about whether the TC can accomplish what we want to do.
Our office is in a private suite that shares a wifi network with other private suites on the same floor. In our suite we have two immediate needs - a shared private (sub)network backup hard drive and shared network printer(s). We have a mix of OSX and Windows computers that will be on our suite's network.
*Here's what we'd like to try:*
1) Connect the Time Capsule to the wired LAN on our office floor's network.
2) Connect our computers to the office floor's network, wirelessly through the Time Capsule.
3) Connect our printer(s) to the Time Capsule for wireless printing.
*Additonally we want to:*
1) Block other office floor network users from accessing/seeing our office suite's Time Capsule Hard Drive.
2) Block other office floor network users from using/seeing our Time Capsule networked printer.
I know that we could easily connect everything with the Time Capsule and set it up as a separate network. But then we have to move from our suite's wifi to the Time Capsule network every time we want to print or access the TC backup - not ideal.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Never mind. Picked up a TC and got everything worked out and running perfectly.

Mixing memory question

I currently have 2x512MB for 1GB of Crucial Ballistix memory sticks in my system right now. I am planning to buy 2x1GB for 2GB of Corsair XMS memory and mixing it with the Crucial stuff. The memory are to be used on my main system right now which is using a MSI K8N Neo4/SLI board at 2-2-2-5 timings with a AMD 3700+ San Diego core. The Corsair XMS memory can run at 2-3-3-6 timings so I don't believe it would be much of a problem running my Crucial stuff at 2-3-3-6 as well. With this setup all 4 memory slots would be full, and I'll have 3GB worth of memory. However, I am wondering if I would run into any problems using these two memory brands together. Are there any potential problems that I should be aware of before I buy the memory?

Find out what voltage each ram uses.
One might use 2.6v the other might use 2.75v.
Seeing as you cannot run each dimm at a separate voltage they should be of a similar voltage.
Otherwise one might be getting to much
and the other maybe too little
Either way could cause problems

Neo2 Mixing Memory Question

Currently running 2x512 Crucial Ballistix in slot 1&2 stock speed 2.2.2.5 - stable. I'm desperate for 2 gigs of ram but thanks to a nagging wife and lack of funds this isn't possible yet, but i do however have 2x512 Corsair value sticks (2,5.3.3.8) in an old machine which i can take out and put with the Crucial Ballistix to make to 2 gigs (4x512). I'd just like to know if mixing them is a good idea or am i asking for trouble.
Any advice, tips are most welcome

Your wife is not nagging you. She just has great looks and excellent computer savy and does not want you to buy or mix memory sticks.
Mixing memory stick as per your plan will only cause lost system performance and instability. You have a Winnie CPU so you will definately need to run at 2T. The timngs, voltages, and chipset of your ballistix and corsair sticks are quite diversed. I own four stick of Ballistix RAM made from different batches. Crucial professed that they do not have to worry about matching dual channel pairs but my own test here reveal a 140 to 176 megs bandwidth performance difference between newer and older pairs (older better). Using this has a comparaison you can just imagine what associating ballistix and corsair would be like.
In summary Billy, unless you are an Italian noble who like self-inflicted pain, is not to mix your crucial and ballistix Ram sticks. Work on the wife instead, wine and dine her, so that you can talk her into letting you buy 2 X 1Gig sticks of PC 400 Ballistix sticks.

Mixing RAM question...

Up to now all the RAM I have installed has been PC2-4200...
Went to the store and asked for 4Gigs of PC2-4200 and was given 4Gigs of PC2-6300...
Crucial website states that PC2-6300 is compatible with my Power Mac...
Just want to know if mixing the two is OK...or am I asking for problems...

Okay, I added the Kingston pc3200 and everything worked fine.
There were some differences in the benchmarks.
On the SiSoft Sandra memory bandwidth test, the difference was minimal at changing RAM Bandwidth Int Buff from 4791 MB/s to 4796 MB/s and the Float Buff from 4785 MB/s to 4782 MB/s.
The PC Mark2002 test was, however, better. The memory test went from 9430 to 9793. As a refference of gain, I tested the system when I put it together and with no DOC and the default BIOS settings, the memory scored 8441.
For the fun of it, I ran a 3dMark2003 test. I lost a little on this one, but that may be due to the fact that I have the case open. I installed a fan on the side cover to blow fresh air directly onto the RAM and NorthBridge and with the cover off, the fan needs to be unplugged. So looking at my core center I can see the NB temp is up to 116 F, which is about 8 to 10 degrees higher than with the cover/fan on. My 3dMark test scores went from 6012 to 5802. I don't know if the addition of the memory would do this, if it is form the cover/fan thing or maybe 3dMark2003 just doesn't like Mondays :P
So there is a difference, but probably I probably won't be able to take advantage of it. I will leave it in for a few days and see if there is a "seat of the pants" difference, whether it be better or worse.
I would love to hear people's input on these "results" or any suggestions.

Cover Flow Mix Up and Album Song Mix Up Question

I just got an 80gb ipod and have all my songs on it now. i am just about finished with getting all of the album covers that i didnt have into my itunes now. i didnt get any of the album covers from itunes, i just did a search for all of em in google.
anyways, for some reason i have one song from the red hot chili peppers greatest hits album (soul to squeeze) and if you click on get info and then click on artwork the correct cover is there but in the cover flow and album view its zz tops greatest hits cover and underneath it reads greatest hits and then underneath that its Various Artists. My Queen greatest hits album has the same zz top cover and reads the same as well, lol. i cant figure out how to fix this.
one more thing before i go guys, i have a couple of albums where the songs are not together but the artist and album names are the same, ive retyped the artists name and album to see if i somehow made a mistake the first time but they are still seperate, what the heck else can i do. its annoying have an album where the songs are not together?
once i fix these problems am i going to have to resynch my ipod again, i have 6thousand plus songs, that took forever the first time i did that. im hopin i can just plug the ipod into itunes and it will just fix what is different??

nope, the songs are not mixed up at all. like i said, its just the album art and the artist name underneath the album which reads "various artists". my queen greatest hits and my red hot chili peppers greatest hits say the same thing and both have my zz top greatest hits album cover lol.
now if you click get info on the album the artwork is the correct artwork which blows my mind.
somebody please helps, its so annoying.

one more thing, do i have to resync my whole ipod again just to get the album artwork on there or is there a faster way than having to resync 6thousand plus songs?? ive actually never resync so maybe it will just add stuff thats different instead of just putting everything back on??

Mixer adapter question

Hi folks, well I just about gave up on usb and firewire interfaces...just feel I get a better result from my mixer. So now i'm stuck with a non usb based mixer powering my xlr mics and i've been using Line in on garageband. I remember a while back reading something about an adapter being used for a mixer to produce better sound as the line in on a macbook is not capable of handling sound transfer as clearly as one would hope. Does anyone know what this adapter is, can I convert my RCA inputs into usb for the macbook? Any recommendations on the best way to go about setting up the mixer for garageband..would greatly appreciate and thank you appropriately.

Cross platform question

I made a DVD that plays fine on my Mac but won't play on a PC running either XP or Vista. What can I do to correct this? It was very embarrassing and almost cost me a gig.

What kind of DVD? Did you make a VIDEO DVD and if so did you use iDVD to make it?
If so, it should play on any computer regardless of platform which has a DVD player application.

Newbie JDBC's platform question

Hi!
While not necessarily to prgramming and Java, I am very new to JDBC, database and Linux.
I am using Windows, but I will have to develop a database Java for Linux. I am trying to learn JDBC with ODBC, but I have a feeling that ODBC is a Windows' thing? So what kind of Database would you suggest that I go with so that it will be easy to use JDBC and will be the same in both Windows and Linux?
