Mixed screen ratios in iDVD - problem

I'm using iDVD to make a DVD with mixed content - some is 16:9 some 4:3.
Problem is when the 4:3 content plays iDVD puts grey padding either side to make up the widescreen.
Is there any way I can change this padding to black?
iDVD 7.1.1, Macbook Pro 13in, OS X 10.6.7

OK!  Solved it myself.  It's just an artefact of the way iDVD previews content.  Once I make a disk image it goes away.
Sorry for bothering everyone.

  • Mix Aspect Ratios?

Is it possible to mix aspect ratios in an iDVD project? I'd like to have a 16x9 menu, a 16x9 movie, and a 4x3 slideshow, since all my pictures are 4x3 and I'd like to avoid windowboxing.

Normally the answer is no. You cannot do this in iDVD. But I'm wondering if it might be possible to add the 4:3 as a QT Movie to the DVD Rom contents of the iDVD that was created in 16:9 thereby allowing you to do this when playing back on a computer.
    Just an idea.....

  • Re aspect ratio mis-match problem

I'm using motion with DVCPROHD 1080p24. So aspect ratio should be 1280 x 1080 (1.5)
As I'm doing an animation, media is coming in from stills camera... into photoshop and out into corel Painter and back again. Eventually I am getting square/rectangular problems. (Painter has no aspect settings and does not recognise this and puts everything back to square) So I usually reset the aspect in inspector to (1.5)
This last time, when clicking on the media and inspecting one sequence has come in at (1.5) but only looks in proportion when set to square ratio. If I set it to square, will there be any problems? So some media is square some (1.5) This sequence will go out again as an animation codec or frame sequence. What happens? could does this eventually end up a blur when it goes back to motion and then to fcp? Does this matter?

Dig deeper into to the settings of your TV. Under picture settings you should you should find a setting such as "HD picture size". Both of my Panasonics have it. Adjusting that setting should help you.

We recently upgraded to Xfinity's X1 box and there is a definite difference in the screen ratio aspect between HD channels and non-HD channels.  On HD channels, people and things are stretched while on non HD channels, faces, people and objects appear normal. I gone through all the X1 settings, trying different combinations to no avail.  Current video settings are: Zoom = Full, Resolution = 16.9, 1080p60 HD.  I have tried all 16.9 resolutions, with Zoom On and Off - no help. My TV is a Smart Samsung UN55D6000 and is connected to the X1 box via an HDMI cable.  My Samsung TV is set (in settings) to 16.9.  Changing this setting to 16.9 Wide somewhat solves this problem but the Guide is cut off at the edges and some of the picture is slightly cut off at the edges.    Note:  This was not a problem with our old Cisco RNG200n.  We simply used the remote and selected “stretch” and left it at there. Any suggestions?  This problem may be a deal breaker.  Thanks.

No, sounds like when you dropped it an cracked the screen it may have also damaged the logic board or the repair person damaged a cable.

  • The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse.

The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse. Should I take it to the apple store and see if they can replace the screen? is it expensive to replace the backlight/invertor?

This sounds to me like a fairly common Inverter Fault.
It is not the screen that needs replacing by the sounds of it,
It sounds like either the inverter board or the inverter cable needs replacing.
My understanding is that inverter / inverter cable repairs aren't too expensive, but not too cheap!
Obviously your best way to find out how much it would cost to be repaired would be to take it in to an Apple Store, as I have never had to have one replaced myself, but the information I'm providing, is based on what I've read elsewhere.
    How old is the MacBook?
    Thanks,

  • IMovie "green screen" feature has serious problems.

I precisely followed the iMovie "help" instructions to make a green screen effect for what should have been a simple iMovie project... a 10-second video tagline for closing titles on a much more extensive project.
According to iMovie help, it should have been easy (and maybe even fun). It wasn't. Five hours of my life melted away forever. The iMovie "green screen" feature has serious problems. Remember that old Mac advertising campaign that said "It just works"? Well, it doesn't. Shame on Apple and the iMovie development team.

    Folks,
I ran into the same issue (I named it "transparent green screen", I hadn't a better name).
I spent about a week to solve this problem, since I needed it to build a marriage slideshow.
    The tools & Config:
iMovie 09, iPhoto 09, Adobe After Effects CS4
Mac OS X 10.6.2, MacBook Pro 13" 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM
The Solution for the "transparent green screen":
I created a movie in AE, and put a green background into it. It was the pure green color.
When I imported the movie into iMovie I just got the "transparent green screen", not the real effect.
I some cases, by changing the background images, I could get the green screen to work, but it was kind of random. Which made it harder to solve it.
I thought it could be because of AE, some incompatibility. I went to Youtube and downloaded a green screen video (a woman dancing in a green background). I inserted the video into iMovie, and it worked just fine, all the way.
Then I tried to match the green color I was creating digitally with the Youtube video's green color. It didn't work either. The "transparent" effect was there again.
But when I looked at that Youtube video, I noticed that the green color was not pure. Because that green background was made in the real world, it was not pure, there were some shades of green.
Well, I just replicated that into the digital world. Modified my video's digital green background. From pure green to a gradient green, but very subtle, almost imperceptible. Just to replicate the "imperfection from the real world".
That was it. Solved. Maybe iMovie 09 needs that imperfection to work well. Using "pure greens" might confuses it.
Please do your tests. And let me know your results.
    Regards and greetings from Brazil.

  • Preserving 720x480 square aspect ratio in iDVD

Hi, I posted this question in the iDVD group and was told there might be a FCP answer.
I'm importing a 720x480 (3:2) aspect ratio movie with square pixels into iDVD. iDVD scrunches it up and makes everyone look too tall and thin, though the movie looks fine in QT. Are there any special settings in FCP when exporting that can assure the proper aspect ratio in iDVD? (I was told iDVD only supports 4:3 and 16:9, which may make this a moot question.)
    thanks,
    Scott

Where did you get this footage by the way? If you're creating square-pixel assets (in photoshop or after effects for example) for a SD NTSC project, you should create them at 720x534 (for 4:3) or 864x480 (for 16:9).
I created it from a FCP sequence with 720x480, square pixels, 24 frames per second. My goal is to output the sequence as a series of Targa still images which can be output to 35mm film. That's why I want the 3:2 ratio rather than 4:3, and I've discovered if I don't use square pixels the Targa still images are distorted.
I was able to get what I wanted in iDVD by 1) outputting my original 720x480 square sequence to quicktime; 2) reimporting it into FCP and inserting it in a 640x480 NTSC-CCIR 601 pixel aspect ratio (kind of like you suggested), 3) exporting that again as quicktime, and 4) importing that file into iDVD. The funny thing is, in the FCP 4:3 sequence the image looks distorted (scrunched from the sides so everyone looks too tall and thin), but when I import it into iDVD it stretches back out to normal again. (When I changed the pixels to square in the Browser before dropping it in the sequence, it looked fine in the sequence but stretched sideways in iDVD. Go figure.)
What a lot of back and forth! But I got what I want, and I thank you for your suggestion.
Now I'd like to figure out how to deal with what I suspect is frame slippage on the DVD from my original 24fps, but I think I can deal with that, as DVD is not the final output.
    thanks!

I couldn't see any music on iTunes that I had previously saved. I looked in Previous iTunes library. "Previous iTunes Library" now appears at the top of my iTunes screen, is this the problem? If so how do I fix it so i can access my saved music? Also my wife just before this set up her own iTunes account on this PC.

For an updated, I performed an SMC reset and that has solved the problem for the time being. This thread on the World of Warcraft Mac Technical support forum is very helpful, though it seems the issue has not yet been resolved and the SMC reset is a temporary fix at best.

  • Looks like my screen has yellow tint problem.

looks like my screen has yellow tint problem, images look  more yellowish. Does anyone have similar issue with their mac airs?

This isn't an actually an issue. Apple have recently changed the screens they put in all their devices. If you were to put an iPhone 4 bought on release date next to one bought a month ago you would see that the older iPhone 4 would have a "bluer" screen. This is because the old screens had unnaturally bright whites so the new screens are supposed to be closer to the real colours and give a broader range of colours.

I have a screen shot of the problem, I can send it to you. The first thing I tried was a zoom on your header. It looks like some things in your header were anchored to the right while others anchored to the left. When the zoom occurred they met in the middle.

Thanks, I know I'm not really a big brand (not even a brand at that) but I think you could always release as Firefox's first own brand mobile WITH the OS :)
