Mixing 5.1 surround sound on MacBook Pro

I've recently connected my MacBook Pro (purchased August 2007) to my DVD player in order to play 5.1 surround sound through the DVD speakers.
This all works fine when I play a DVD on my Mac in surround sound.
However, the main purpose of setting up this connection was so that I could mix surround sound using Soundtrack Pro, and be able to preview the mix whilst mixing. Unfortunately, I've now realised that the Optical Out connection on the MacBook Pro does not support 5.1 mixing and that therefore I am going to need an external surround sound card.
I've read that products such as Griffin Firewave are good solutions to the problem, however, they only exist in America...
I was wondering if anyone knew of any UK products that they could recommend? So far I've only been able to find ones that connect through USB. Would this affect in any way what I am trying to achieve?
Thanks in advance for your help and support.
Harrison

Thanks jgourd,
So what do I need to do to be able to mix in surround sound? So far, the only advice I've had from people (including people at the Regent Street Apple store) is to connect optically to my surround sound speakers. I think, generally, people are confused about MacBook Pro's ability to work with 5.1...
What connection should I be using instead of optical?
By the way, I've found that the Griffin FireWave product I was talking about is available on ebay for a very reasonable price. It plugs into the MacBook Pro by firewire and has 3 3.5mm stereo-mini-jacks outputting 3x2 (= 6) channels line level - so one for L/R, one for C/S and one for LS/RS.
Obviously these need to amplify into 6 speakers. Could I feed these connections to my DVD player? Or would I need to connect directly to a set of speakers?
I appologise if I'm asking stupid questions. But video editing is my "field" - the sound side is something I'm still aiming to get to grips with!
Thanks again for your help =]

  • Using 5.1 Surround Sound w/ MacBook Pro

I have an existing Logitec z506 PC surround sound system hookd into my HP Pavillion desktop so I can get surround sound from it (back, center, front/sub). I also have HDMI from my HP to the TV to get video. Now the new retina Macbook Pro has HDMI for video but doesn't have the same green, black and orange ports for audio as my HP does. I'm thinking I'll need a new surround sound setup for my Macbook Pro. It would also be nice to use it with my AppleTV, Xbox 360, etc.  I think all these devices, including my TV and my desktop have an optical audio connection. Is there a cable that goes from optical to a different 5.1 surround sound system? I wan't the true 5.1 center, sub, front left, front right, back left and back right working with all my stuff, specifically MacBook Pro. Will I need a dedicated AV reciever for this?

here is a link to the cable --

printout the pictures, and take them with you to your local store.
(I do not know if your computer has the capability to do 5.1 output)

  • How do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

  • Is it possible to bounce 5.1 Surround sound with Logic Pro 7.1?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to create a song and bounce it in 5.1 Surround sound with Logic Pro 7.1.1 without extra software and hardware?
    Thanks in advance!

This will let you make a DVD-Audio disc in Mac. It's free. It is command line only, and not for non-savy computer users.
There are other commerical programs out there that make DVD-Audio discs. Search google for DVD-Audio OS X. These programs cost $100+

A month ago there was a report that surround is included in FPC6 studio, due in april with a special FCP extreme ($10.000),

  • How do I disable the startup sound on macbook pro 7,1?

I need to disable the startup sound on the macbook pro 7,1 running 10.6.8.  If anyone can give me info I would appreciate it.

Look for Startup Sound on Macupdate.com
You really shouldn't turn it off, as if there is a error you won't be able to hear the beep codes.
However you can lower the volume.

  • Lost sound on macbook pro

    Hi Macfriends,
Running Macbook pro, 2.2 ghz, system 10.4.11. Latest updates installed. Had portable speakers plugged in (worked fine). After removing them i lost ability to adjust sound. I cannot move the slider bar (it is very light in color) and I can't grab it. Have played with sound preferences--it is not on mute...have tried restarting, disk utility says no problems. the slider bar is at top (loudest) but i can't grab it. The preference panel says "Digital Out----built in output". Am I missing something obvious.....Any thoughts? All help will be appreciated! THANKS!!! Joe

    UPDATE----FIXED IT!
I plugged the speakers back in and the headphone showed up under output in sound preference panel. Plugged in and out couple times and "internal speakers" showed up. I selected it and wooo-la, it resolved itself! All is fine again in macland!!!!

  • No sound on MacBook Pro after 10.6.8 upgrade

    Good morning.
I've got an 5,1 model MacBook Pro (aluminium unibody) 4gb RAM, 2.4GHz Core2Duo and it's been working fine up until yesterday when I installed the 10.6.8 Snow Leopard update.
Since then I get no sound through earphones or through the internal speakers.
If I ALT+Click the speaker icon I get two outputs:
    Soundflower (2ch)
    Soundflower (16ch)
I've no idea what Soundflower is, and a spotlight search just shows up sound.log which refers to
    6/23 18:54:29.163  => WoW Version 4.1.0 (14007) Apr 29 2011
So that looks like World of Warcraft (just started WoW and logged in, turned sound off, turned sound on and no sound from WoW either)
Looking at the log in the console and narrowing it down to Soundflower I see:
    6/25 10:50:02.974   --- [1] Soundflower (2ch)
    6/25 10:50:02.976   --- [2] Soundflower (16ch)
    6/25 10:50:02.980  ** Using Driver [0] System Default (Soundflower (2ch))
Anyway, I can get no sound in anything since 10.6.8!
    Any ideas?

    Okay, I tried EVERYTHING.
    Trust Me.
I even did the downgrading to the 10.6.7 HDA.
    HERE IS THE SOLUTION:
YOU WILL NOT NEED TO LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE, IF YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
    1. Download and install the 10.6.8 Supplemental Update from Apple (link below).
                                http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
    2. Once the update is installed, and the system has restarted, type "Disk Utility" into Spotlight, press enter to launch it, and select your hard drive on the left. Then click "Repair Disk Permissions." (This step may or may not be necessary, but is a good idea in case there are discrepancies from the update).
    3. Once the utility is finished, plug in some headphones. Then, press the Option key and click on the speaker icon in the menu bar.
    4. Click the Headphones option under the "Output Device" section. You should get sound.
Unplug the headphones and ensure that the audio is not muted. You should now also get sound through your speakers.
THIS WILL WORK. DO NOT MESS WITH VOODOO, etc. I hear that will just cause kernel panics.
If you still have problems, try resetting the PRAM by simply shutting down the computer. Hold Command+Option+P+R before the gray screen appears. Hold it until you hear the tone a second time, then release.

  • Input/output sound for MacBook Pro 10.6.8

The sound is not working properly for my narrated powerpoint presentation. I have recorded it on my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 and I get some sound but it sounds like feedback or something (like a scary phantom voice). I am using the internal microphone and internal speakers. I have checked the sound volume and speech recognition and have calibrated this. I am using powerpoint for Mac 2011 v. 14.4.1. What's happening?
Hoping someone can help, I desperately need it to work!
    Thanks in advance.

If your computer shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, it'll have come with a DVD. If needed, phone Apple and order a replacement.
Unless you got Mac OS X Server with it, which is highly unlikely for a portable computer, that DVD will contain iLife.

  • ???????????HOW TO GET SURROUND SOUND ON MACBOOK???????????????????????

I have a macbook osx 10.5.8. I purchased some Logitech X-540 5.1 surround sound speakers to hook up to my laptop. There are 3 cables (an orange, green, and black) that come from the different speakers/subwoofer that are supposed to plug into the computer, but i can only plug in 1 of the 3 into the headphone jack my macbook. Here's some pics of the speakers:
    http://techgage.com/print/logitechx-540_51speakers
When I do so, only some of the speakers play, not all of them. I went to BestBuy and asked someone if surround sound is possible for a macbook, but he said "no". I have seen online many people claiming it is possible to get 5.1 surround sound for mac, but haven't figured out how. Can someone please be of some assistance????

Since you only want to play CD's why not just use the two for the normal Left/Right channels your CD was created with?
If you want to use ALL of your speakers, you'll need to invest in a USB or Firewire device that will connect to your Macbook and then allow you to connect all your speakers.
