Mixing and Matering with Logics Audio Effects Plugins

I have a general question for those using Logic Pro to mix and perhaps master music. I've had the software for approximately a year-and-a-half. In that time I've auditioned several high-end, third-party, native AU plugins for EQ and compression (Waves SSL, PSP, Sonalksis, etc.) Certainly they sound great. But in the end, I often find myself getting just as good a sound with Logic's own plugs after a little bit of work. It's not as quick, mind you - and you really do have to play to get to know the plugins well because they're capable of some horrible sounds too. But the good stuff is in there.
I see Logic's EQ's and compressors trashed sometimes in forums and I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Yes, I'm familiar with UAD and the quality/authenticity of their emulations. But at the end of the day, all I need is a great sound - not a particular historic sound, as good as some of those may be.
The one thing I haven't been able to hear is Focusrite's Liquid Mix and I'm tempted to buy one just to hear it, with, of course the option to return it if it's nothing special.
So here's what I want to know - and I am just curious. Are any of you out there mixing in the box with just Logic's plugins and really getting great results? Or perhaps mixing with mostly Logic plugins and a few indispensible others (L1 comes to mind). If so, are you mixing pop/rock, R&B, acoustic - basically, something other than electronic/dance?
Thanks

Are any of you out there mixing in the box with just Logic's plugins and really getting great results? Or perhaps mixing with mostly Logic plugins and a few indispensible others
My 'indispensible others' would be Izotope's Ozone, PSP Vintage Warmer and to a lesser extent TriTone's ColorTone Pro.
But in the end, I often find myself getting just as good a sound with Logic's own plugs after a little bit of work. It's not as quick, mind you - and you really do have to play to get to know the plugins well
I agree completely. I'm often reading here that this plug or that gadget is a must have - actually, learning what's already in the Logic Pro suite is often the solution. The essential ingredient are ears, and the ability to know what sound you're looking for, as opposed to twiddling in the hope that you'll come across a happy accident.
because they're capable of some horrible sounds too
If you want to hear some truly awful sounds, Ozone can destroy a mix in short order

  • Problem with DeNoiser audio effect

I hava a problem with DeNoiser audio effect. When I apply it to a clip, it starts to work after a few seconds: it produces noisy audio on the beginning of each clip, but clean at the end. It appears both when I watch playback in Premiere (with MPE GPU acceleration enabled on GTX 460), and in final rendered movie.
How can I resolve this problem? Or maybe Premiere has got other effects that function similar to DeNoiser and work fine?
I'm using Premiere Pro CS6 Trial (updated version 6.0.1, I have also updated Media Encoder to version 6.0.1). I work with footage from Canon 600D DSLR (1080p24, mov, H.264, PCM audio). My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (with SP1, problem appears also on Windows without SP). I have no third-party plugins instaled.

How can I resolve this problem?
Don't use that effect.  Instead do this kind of thing in Audition.

  • Connecting Interface and recoding with Logic Express 9

Hi apologies if I've posted this in the wrong location. I need some help.
I have just bought an iMac (with Logic express 9) along with a focusrite saffire pro 14 sound interface.
i'm having difficulties getting a line in and out of the focusrite and into logic.
I currently have passive monitors plugged into an amp, which is then plugged into the headphone jack on the iMac, the focusrite is connected via firewire.
my mic is connected via xlr with phantom power into the focusrite, and my guitar (via an effect unit with built in pre-amp) is connected into the 1/4'' input. both signals are showing levels on the focusrite mixer software - but no sound. the only output from the sound interface is the firewire.
I can record, and play back in logic using my usb midi controller- USB direct into the iMac.
i've selected the focusrite as the driver in logic, also as the input device in system preferences on the iMac.
any ideas when I am doing wrong?
    any help would be good
    thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
there are some points where the big bear trap might have snapped onto your feet
First: You said you have selected the focusrite as the core audio input device in Logic. This is okay. But have you selected the correct inputs for the audio tracks you are recording to? You focusrite has 4 possible line inputs (1 and 2 are combined on the front in the middle of the XLR jacks, which are also inputs 1 and 2 for mics, and 3 and 4 are on the back).
When you connect a headphone to your focusrite, can you hear your mic or your guitar? (turn up the monitor volume as well as the headphones volume!)
Given you really have a good signal that goes into your focusrite, the same signal should be available in Logic *for the appropriate inputs* . It won't work if you have plugged your guitar into input 3 and have input 1 or 2 selected in the channelstrip's input selector tab.
Second: Given there's a signal coming into Logic, where does it go from there? The focusrite has 4 outputs, and you should connect your amp&speakers to them. If your amp&speakers are still connected to your iMac's headphone jack, you must select your Mac's "built in output" as the output device in Logic. The OS X preference pane has nothing to do with Logic's preferences. Don't confuse them.
    Cheers,
    Fox

  • Please help on which audigy 2 card to buy for use with logic audio plati

Hello, i'm wondering if the audigy 2 zs card is good to use in my home studio setup? I use logic audio platinum and already have a unitor 8 midi interface so i don't think (question)i need a breakoutbox version of the audigy 2. I used to have a audiowork 8 pci soundcard but that always gave me problems when playing a game (at least most games).Hope someone can help me with this since i realy wanna hook up my equipment to my new computer (dell dimension 3000 with onboard sound)Message Edited by amsterdammusic on 2-5-2004 02:03 PM

i would be you and if you can afford go for the macpro (2008 the 2009 seems to have some incompatilities cf. other thread). By experience allow yourself to have some margin, i mean more cpu power (one day you will maybe use heavy plugins or synth instruments from 3th party software) and this is killing the cpu. So more is always better. It takes me more than 6 months (start last year) to setup my macpro to a stable stage and now i am so happy it can runs without any big problem everything i want. (ex i use superior 2 as an internal synth instrument in Logic (not as standalone, to have the maximum control within logic, and i load it as multitrack instrument, it taxes 40 % of a single core - and because of synth instrument, only one core will function, and i can record without problem 2 guitarists (using GTR3.5), the drummer on a e-drum superior 2.0, a bassist with gtr3.5 and a vocal with buss reverb, in low latency mode - buffer 128- the cpu core reach about 80 %, without soft instrument than you have almost no limit cause all your core will be actifs, i mean recording just audio.).
Hope you understand what i mean here..

  • Connecting a hardware mixer to work with Logic

    Hi,
I'm really keen on the idea of using an analogue mixer to work in conjunction with Logic. But is it even possible to connect Logic and a Mackie 1642 vlz3 via an iMac?
    Nick

Yes, it is if you already have a multi-channel interface.
If you don't, maybe consider Mackie's Onyx series mixers which, with the firewire option, gives you an analog mixer and an interface all in one.

  • Help with Logic Audio 6.0.1 XSKey

    Hi,
I recently tried to use Logic Audio 6.0.1 (after a 6-month hiatus), and after inserting my XSKey, it said "Emagic XSKey not found." I tried booting up Logic numerous times, making sure the XSKey was properly inserted, but the same message was displayed. I then went on the Apple Web site for help,
    and found this message:
"If you have Logic Pro 7 or later, and require a replacement XSKey, you may contact Apple with your request at www.apple.com/support/logic. Please note that it does not matter whether you are running Logic Pro 7 with a blue
or white XSKey to be eligible for support. If you have Logic version 5 or 6, please send your request via email to [email protected]
"Replacement XSKeys for Emagic Logic versions 5 and 6 (blue Emagic XSKeys) will be available for purchase only until January 1, 2006. After such time, customers may purchase the then current version of Apple Logic Pro, which
will include an XSKey that is compatible with Emagic Logic versions 5 and 6, including all Emagic plug-ins."
I emailed Emagic (at [email protected]) and they sent back the exact same message I found on the Apple Web site. Could someone explain to me what the issue is here? Did my XSKey somehow just expire? How is this possible if I never update Logic?
    Thanks!

  • Pops and clicks with Logic

First off i am relatively new with Logic Pro and i believe that this may be a set up issue of my own fault and not a problem with logic. Also i am running on a brand new Mac Pro with 2 gig ram, the 2.6 processor, and 2 harddrives, a 250 gb for OS, Logic, itunes music, and "my stuff", and 500 gb for audio only. I am running on a brand new PreSonus Firestudio as well. Anyway when i record i get pops and clicks that sound like small explosions in my monitors. I have switched every cable that could possibly be switched and ruled that out. Also i have posted a similar message on presonus.com to see if it is firestudio related, but just incase anyone here has heard of problems like this let me know. I think it might be buffer size related or something like that. Like i said I am relatively new and any help would be great.
PS sometimes it pops when im not recording ex: listening to itunes.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

When running logic it's recommended to shut off things like your airport connection (if you have one), and shut down all other apps. You want to provide as much bandwidth for system audio as possible.
I even go so far as to disable spotlight indexing (check out spotless if you want an easy way to do it) to make sure as little unwanted disk activity is occuring as possible. Dashboard widgets can also be a pain. Disable dashboard too while you're at it.
I have a similar setup, mind you with a different audio interface, and I can run the system reliably down to the lowest buffer size of 32 samples.
That being said, there are a few other questions you will want to ask yourself. Are the clicks and pops in the recorded audio? And are they consistently at the exact same places in the file on playback? Check them individually in the sample editor. Because then you may very well have a different problem altogether.
Also don't hesitate to see what kind of information PreSonus can give you. If the item is brand new then don't hesitate to call on them for help, all other things being equal.
When you use virtual instruments, do the same pops an clicks appear?
Did you use the latest drivers? Are you fully up to date with all your updates, including the Universal Binary update for logic? (I know it probably sounds repetitive but it's worth a shot right?)
I could go on and on but fish around and see what you can find. Then come back. Someone will be here.

  • Trouble with denoiser audio effect when exporting help!!!

I have been working on a school assignment for media on Adobe Premiere  Pro CC and have come across a very frustrating issue that I have no idea about how to solve. it goes under the category of a 'technical difficulty'.
As I have alot of interviews and talking in my project for my Documentary I am shooting on Bullying for my Current Affair I have alot of audio to deal with and with my Rode VideoMic Pro when in conversation in the midst of an interview there is a constant 'hiss and crackle' that one can hear when watching hence I have used the audio affect of "DeNoiser" to get rid of this and it seems to work great on my workflow in my sequence in Premiere as I have reduced most clips to -15Db's. But when I export my project as I have done several times, the 'Denoiser' affect doesn't work for the first 3 seconds + for all clips that I have used to affect for. At the start of all the clips used with the affect there is a constant hiss and crackle and after 3 seconds it fades out??? Please help me with this very unusual problem as I want this to be a fantastic film on your fantastic software!
    Thanks

Is the music on a separate track, or recording live during the interview?  Hopefully the music is separate, and if so then do the following:
In Premiere, right click on the audio clip that contains the voice and choose export to Audition.  Premiere will export the clip into Audition (and it will update on the timeline when saved in audition).
In Audition, highlight a piece of the clip that is noise only, (a sizable gap when there's no talking and only the ambient noise of the room is heard)  capture that as a noise print (right click, "capture noise print" or Shift-P).  Then in Effects, select the 'Noise reduction (process)" tool.  (Note:  I assigned a custom key for easy access as I use it frequently).  Then tweak the settings of the tool until it sounds good to you.   You can follow the settings I have posted above as a guide/starting point, but no two settings will work for every situation, (notice how I chose a logarithmic curve and added control points to follow its contour).
Personally, I don't try to remove all the noise, just tame it until the voice is dominate.  The more aggressive the reduction, the more unnatural the result.  A little ambiance is expected and sounds natural.   Even then, a little noise is masked when I go back in and add music.  You can play the clip in a loop while you make adjustments and go ahead, go the extreme to get sense for what each tool does, and then be subtle. Your ears are the best sense of measure.
Once your happy, select or highlight the entire clip and click apply.  Listen to the result.  If you're happy still, then save it and it will update in Premiere, and you grab the next clip and repeat the process.
Once you have all the voice clips edited, then you can add music.  I suggest that you keep the music at -12dB lower than the voice as a starting point.
You can also apply music via a ducking (side-chain) technique in Audition as another step.  To do so:
After fixing all the voice clips, mute any music tracks you have.  Create a new sequence and paste the sequence you've edited into that new sequence, right click on the audio track in that sequence and bring that into Audition like you did before.  What you'll have is all the audio clips assembled into one.   "Normalize" that freshly import track, ensuring even volume/peaking throughout, (to within -3dB) is a good target.
In Audition open a new mutli-session and choose the "VO with Ducking"  template.  Load that freshly imported audio onto the voice track (top), and add you select music in the track beneath it.  Dial down the volume of the music track until the voice sounds dominate (I try for a -12dB difference).  Double click the Dynamics Processing filter in the Music track and in the settings tab, check the link channels box and in the level detector area, adjust it's attack and release rate until it sounds good to you.
Then render a mixdown of the session, saving the result to a new audio file.  Import that file into Premiere, add it to a new audio track in your original edit and mute the other audio tracks.   Render away.

  • Not able to install Logic on mac with OSX.  10.8.2. Error message: Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported. I have logic studio 8 software purchased in 2007 and upgraded with logic studio 9 (purchased in 2009)

After an earlier attempt to move Logic from my other mac (OSX 10.6.8) with the migration assistant to my new mac with OSX 10.8.2. I've re-started the whole start up process by erasing the hard drive from the new machine and build it up from scratch. After a new "out of the box" start, I decided to install LOGIC from my disks : starting with my 2007 package Logic Studio 8 and upgrading with my Logic 9 package from 2009. When trying to start to install 2008 I got the error message : Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported.
What does this mean? HOw do I get this working under 10.8.2 as it works flawlessly under OSX 10.6.8. For sure I didn't buy a new machine to have OSX 10.8.2 but I suspect this is the roadblock to installing my logic package.
    Help!

    Mark,
    Sorry...
I completely lost the thread (I actually got confused between you and another poster on a another forum that was asking the same basic question) and somehow ended up thinking you were trying to install on a PPC Mac
My apologies and please ingnore those parts of my last post relating to the PPC Macs...
You have an Intel Mac and therefore Logic Studio 2 Boxed Upgrade set should install/run on your Mac without issue. As I said earlier.. you do not need to try and install from the original Logic Studio 1 /Logic 8 Boxed set...(It won't work anyhow because you have an Intel Mac and that version had a PPC installer)  but just install from the Logic Studio 2 / Logic Pro 9 Upgrade Boxed setof DVDs instead...
Have you tried the "Make Disk Image" solution I gave earlier? That normnally works under such circumstances as what you are describing can happen when your DVD drive cannot read the DVDs correctly... I have had this situation myself where one drive read them okay and another failed to do so for whatever reason. Making and then installing from Disk images of those exact same disks resolved the issue for me...
You can try to reinstall directly from the DVDs of course though under some circumstances it may not allow you to reinstall Logic Pro itself if that part of the original installation attempt was successful... in which case you can also try this... (It's probably the easiest method if Logic 9 was already installed and present in your Apps Folder)
If the Logic Pro App is in your applications folder..
Run Software Updates to update Logic Pro to a version that will run under 10.8.2 (The initially installed version of Logic will not)
    Run Logic
Go to the menu bar in Logic and select Logic Pro/Install Additional Content and select all content in there..
This content is basically exactly the same as what is stored on the remaining DVDs of the boxed set so you might not need to use the rest of the DVDs to install from but download it all instead from Apple Servers...

  • Syncing roland 303 with Logic Audio 6.1

I am trying to sync my roland tb303 with Logic 6.1 in OS9. I have turned on the midi clock under song settings/midi and am using a midi/sync converter between my mt4 midi box & 303 but the 303 does not run. Any suggestions ??

OK. The sync output dialog is under file/song settings/synchronization. Select the MIDI tab (looks like a file folder, NOT the little icon at the top)Then you can check the "transmit MIDI clock destination 1" box. Usually you can get away with selecting "All" on the pull down menu and not worrying about which port goes where, but some older MIDI gear freaks out if it sees MIDI clock. If you have to just select the proper port from the list. If you have the MIDI out from the computer to the MIDI in on your sync box you should be good to go!

  • EW and VSL with Logic 64 bit

    Hey guys,
any news yet on using EW play edition and VSL Ensemble pro with Logic 64?
so far I haven't seen any problems, but I haven't given it a full run yet, what about you guys?

You say this is from a flash memory camcorder? Can  you be more specific?
Webbie camcorders, like the Flip, may shoot in hi-def, but they also record to a non-standard codec that can cause some of the problems you're describing.

  • Compatibility with Logic Audio FOR WINDOWS

    Hi
I'm considering buying a MAC to do sound recording on. I used to do sound recording on a PC using emagic Logic audio gold 4, running Windows 98. I still have all the old .lso files. Any hope in heaven of asking a mac running Logic Pro 7 to recognise these? If Apple's as clever as it seems to be, this should be doable shouldn't it?

  • MIDI recording and editing with Logic Express 8

Hello, I am a beginner. In the literature it is stated that I should "make sure that the latest DRIVER version is installed. I suppose that means the driver from the MIDI system manufacturer which in my case is LIMEX, Vienna, Austria. The MIDI system product name is MidiPro 3, not well known in the US.
Limex does not make/offer a driver. In the audio Midi setup window I was able to install this system and it took it. I can perform single track Midi recordings but when I select three tracks for simultaneous multi-track recording using three different instruments, the recording plays back with one and the same instrument on all tracks.
    What am I doing wrong?
Could this have something to do with the fact that I don't have a DRIVER from my MIDI instrument supplier, Limex?
Someone told me that since I can get Logic to recognize Limex and can record single MIDI tracks it means that I probably don't need a driver and that I am doing something wrong with the set-up.
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
please clarify what you want to do. If you record midi data, this has absolutely nothing do to with the sound. Midi is data only, no sound. So, if you have three tracks containing the same midi data, it depends on the instrument (real or software instrument) you are triggering with this data what sound you'll get.
Example: You record to three tracks at once. Now all three tracks have the same midi data.
Now you set one track to the ES1 Synth, the other to a EXS24 sampler and the third to whatever.
Now all three tracks play back the same notes (midi data), but with different sounds (instruments).
If you trigger an external instrument (is the LIMEX an Instrument or just a midi keyboard?), the midi data has to be set to the correct midi channel and maybe you need a program change event to tell the external instrument which sound bank to use. You can create this Event in the Event List.

  • Random distortion and latency with logic pro and 2 presonus firepods

    Hello,
I was wondering if any one else has had this trouble, about a month and a half ago I bought another Presonus Firepod interface and I also installed Tiger On my mac. Now I get random distortion and have to restart logic and turn the firepods off then turn them on again then restart logic, sometimes I have to do this a couple of times before the distortion goes away. I noticed a lot of times when I use midi (many notes at a time) I hear crakle too. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. please let me know if you have any pointers. I'm not sure if it is my computer, the software, or the interface.
    Thank oyu for your time
    Mike

I hate to be a cynic, but I've been having problems with my (bought in october)
Firebox and I would suggest talking with Presonus. I bought a new one which
exhibited the same issues and spent a month trying to figure out what I was
doing wrong. Well, it wasn't me, but the Firebox. It had a chip and a board replaced. Presonus was pretty lousy at accepting responsibility and slow
at a returning a box. If you went through a dealer see if you can exchange it
for a new one. I wish I had. I'm waiting for an exchange, btw, for this
fixed box because it leaks audio out bypassed outputs. Don't be afraid to insist that you get a working box if you deal with Presonus. The box is great, the support, for me, has been awful.
    Good Luck!
