Mixing AVCHD video with hdv in a project

I recently purchased the Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD and CS5.  I am getting used to both.  I have the Sony z7u which records in HDV format.  What is the logical workflow to combine footage into one project without losing much image quality (ie. can I combine on a timeline?).
Thanks,
Lisa

Excellent, quick answer too!

Glad you pointed to that thread; the message was proven repeatedly to be erroneous and misleading.  Windows natively supports AVCHD (e.g., Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center).  All new consumer and most new professional HD video capture devices (including all forthcoming Nikon D-SLRs) use AVCHD rather than, say, the .MOV format that you do support which actually is NOT supported natively in Windows and requires a QuickTime install.
Again, it is a trivial task to have Lightroom recognize/catalog/playback AVCHD files.  About an hour's work programming-wise to incorporate AVCHD capability into Lightroom's shell (and Adobe can simply let pre-Windows 7 users know that they'll get AVCHD support when they upgrade to Windows 7).

Interesting Steve. I had not heard of MJPEG Audio. Now, I think of the regular MJPEG CODEC's for Video, but wonder if either the Morgan, or the MainConcept will also allow for MJPEG Audio editing. If so, then this ARTICLE might be useful.

  • Mixing 24p DSLR video with HDV

Ok I have a project mostly shot in HDV so I went for a HDV project
I have, hoever, some T2i shoot in 24p I need to insert in the montage. I just dragged the video in the timeline and I noticed that where I should see interlaced frame, the frame just got duplicated. Is it just premiere showing me deinterlaced frame in the viewer ? Is the workflow right ?

Perhaps you could get better results by creating a Sequence just for the DSLR footage (with matching Preset), and then Export that Sequence to match up with the other footage, and Import that into its Sequence?
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Elements 12: Export AVCHD video with 5.1 sound.

The source material has 5.1 sound but when try to export into AVCHD MP4/AAc 5.1 file i get the message:
    Thanks !

You need to give this another look. You can create a PAL AVCHD LITE 720p50 5.1 Channel for the new project dialog choices in Premiere Elements 12 using the principles that I used in my blog for doing this for 1080p. I just did it.
This should be a quick and easy procedure. Let us see what happened in your case.
In your case, the first instruction would be to copy the file name AVCHD LITE 720p50.sqpreset file found in Premiere Elements 12 Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path of:
    Local Disc C
    Program Files
    Adobe
    Adobe Premiere Elements 12
    Settings
    SequencePresets
    PAL
    AVCHD
and in the AVCHD Folder is the AVCHD LITE 720p50.sqpreset file that you copy (paste to desktop for now).
Follow the rest of the instruction in the blog post.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/04/pe11-exporting-1080p50-or-1080p60-file.html
These following specific Notepad changes are the same whether the Notepad document reflects Premiere Elements 11 1080p or your Premiere Elements 12 720p.
    <InitialNumberOfFiveOneTracks>3</InitialNumberOfFiveOneTracks>
    <InitialNumberOfStereoTracks>3</InitialNumberOfStereoTracks>
    Change to:
    <InitialNumberOfFiveOneTracks>3</InitialNumberOfFiveOneTracks>
    <InitialNumberOfStereoTracks>0</InitialNumberOfStereoTracks>
    And where it says
    <AudioChannelType>1</AudioChannelType>
    Change to:
    <AudioChannelType>2</AudioChannelType>
When the changes are made, are you placing a new file specifically named
AVCHD LITE 720p50 5.1 Channel.sqpreset in the correct Program Files location as per the path described....?
And, you can get a AVCHD.mp4 (720p50) 5.1 channel file from Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with the preset of MP4 HD720p50 with adjusts under the Advanced Button/Audio Tab. I just did.
I will write up the above for inclusion in my blog for 720p and obtaining a 720p 5.1 channel version of the preset.
Please review and let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • Mixing anamorphic SD with HDV

I have multiple clips of anamorphic SD and HDV 1080i60 that I need to put together into a sequence. The finished product will be a DVD.
What are the best sequence settings to use?
Should I convert everything to Prores 422 NTSC first, convert the HDV to DV NTSC or ????
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    Brian

just place the HDV material into the SD 16:9 and it will be fine. it will be a waste of time and drive space to convert the HDV native files to ProRes or DV with no benefit. set the SD TL to use the ProRes codec which will get you the most amount of RT from FCP, that simple.

  • No video with HDV using quicktime in windows

    Hi
I have a .mov file that i can't play in quicktime on XP
    its a 1080i50 HDV file
Has anyone managed to reslove the codec problem for this yet
    Thanks in advance

The file was probably made using Final Cut Studio and can only be opened on a Mac with that software.
Ask them to send you an H.264 version. They'll know what this means.

  • Is it possible to create a dolby 5.1 video with HDV clips in Premiere Elements 9

I am trying to take the stereo input of the HDV clips and use those for Front Left and Front Right.  I would like to add some stereo music in the two back channels and add a narrative for the center channel.  Is this possible in Premier Elements 9?
    Thanks for any pointers...

No, unfortunately you did not miss something.
The same, or very similar, question comes up in the PrPro forum, quite often. There, it's usually along the lines of "why do I have to buy the SurCode plug-in? Why is it not included in the price of the program?" There, the answer is that if it WAS included, the price would go up by about US $ 250 for every copy of PrPro, whether the user ever needed to do DD 5.1 SS, or not.
Personally, I was so impressed by the SurCode plug-in for PrPro, that I bought two licenses (no discount for multi-user licenses), and nearly every Project contains DD 5.1 SS, that gets authored in Encore. I also got the SurCode DTS Encoder (not a plug-in, but a stand-alone), and many Projects also have DTS as a supplemental Audio Stream.
Not sure if PrE will ever have DD 5.1 SS output, due to the cost of the DD licensing.
Now, some NLE programs DO offer 5.1 SS, but not sure how many are fully DD (Dolby Digital) compliant.
    Good luck,

  • Project settings for mixing AVCHD and iPhone video

    Hello,
It seems that getting the correct project settings is imporant to Premiere, but what if I would like to mix AVCHD video with iPhone 3GS video?  Which project settings would I select in this case?
    Thank you.

This question aroused my curiosity and I tried mixing 1080i AVCHD and Nokia phone .3gp video on an 1080i AVCHD timeline in PE8 - the 3gp video played fine, the AVCHD video needed the timeline rendered to give a decent quality playback.  I realise that's different from iPhone video, but I'm simply suggesting that it's worth trying, and that project presets don't necessarily mean that only the preset file type will work.
I have to say that this whole project settings thing is a mystery to me.  Why does a 1080i AVCHD preset make a better job of playing back 3gp video from the timeline than it does playing back 1080i AVCHD?  Weird. Why not just handle all that in the background (eg without asking the user for any settings at all, like one NLE here does, or simply setting the timeline to the first clip of the project (optionally) like another one here does?
As for the comment earlier on about background rendering - here (after a day or so) it seems to be not a very useful thing.  Much grinding by the CPU for a very slow result.  To get the timeline to play smoothly it's much quicker to position the work area bar as required and hit "enter".  Also, one has to watch for the new analysis process, which once started seems to create an everlasting CPU intensive process even if you cancel it.  You have to keep a sharp eye on the process manager and see what's consuming CPU cycles (if you don't know already) and kill any apparently rouge Adobe-related processes by hand.  "Bmem" is your friend here, which is about the first thing I install on any PC of mine - badmofo.org/bmem is the site for this excellent freeware app.

It's great to see that apple have update iPhoto to allow the import and watching of AVCHD videos. However, when I play mine, the quality is very bad. Almost like the frame rate cannot keep up. There are horizontal lines in the video as movements happen. Does anyone know how I might fix this? Is anyone else having the same problems?

To get only the AVCHD files, you can import PRIVATE, AVCHD, or BDMV.

    Dont know.
What about the slow down workflow?
I suppose dealing with hundreds of 60p clips interpreted at 23.976  could have something to do with it but then again, this issue didn't seem to happen until the last few months. I can't remember if I saw it happen prior to the last update. But it definitely didn't happen in CS6 when I wasn't GPU Accelerated (I was Software only due to the AMD GPU). Could all this be GPU related because why else would it not have occured before? Our workflow hasn't changed...only the program. The only other thing I think that was changed in the last few months was that I checked the media cache box that puts the clips with the original media. Other than that, no changes really.

  • Imovie on my ipad ...refuses to recognize AVCHD Video. Also when i remove video clips already used in a project, it is unable to recognize missing clips after I've put them back. How do I get around these 2 issues?

My iMovie refuses to recognize, import, or work with AVCHD Video. It also refuses the same video clips even after I have converted them to Mp4. Also, when I delete a video clip already used in a project, then later import the same clip back to my ipad, the software is unable to recognize and find the clip again! Help! How do I get around these issues?

    Hi Craig,
I also got the second problem. The storyboard on iMovie trailer has all these missing videos. If I import them on my iPad it doesn't find them.
If you find a solution it would be much appreciated to share it here ... I'll do the same.

  • Avchd video file made with Premiere Elements 8 won't fast forward or reward

I just finished an AVCHD video project in Premiere 8 and I can't fast forward or rewind the file on my computer with Windows Media Player or in Windows Media Center. The file plays nicelly but it's annoying watch it from start to finish for 45 minutes.
I have a Vixia HF S20 - the video format of the original files was ACHD. After finishing editing the project I choose to save it on my PC (a Dell Inspiron 8100 with I5 - so lots of power awailable) as a MPEG file. I noticed that this format was the only one that gave me the option to save the video in H.264 1920x1080i 30 preset.
The rendering of the video took some 3 hours. It saved the video in AVCHD format and at playback, on my computer screen, it looks just as it should - HD quality - but the lack of controls it's really, really stupid!
Anyway, I need help to figure out what is happening here. Did I do something wrong? Are there other saving settings/presets to choose from that retain the HD quality I am not aware of?  Thanks a million in advance!

Well, if you are weighing things against WMP, it could be that PrE could have done something differently.
Now, I am not a fan of WMP, and am REALLY not a fan of RealMedia Player. I liken that latter one to a Trojan, waiting to happen. I last had a version installed about 12 years ago, and would never let another copy near any of my computers.
Besides the two that I mentioned, GOM Player gets high marks, as well.
    Good luck,

  • IDVD behaving strangely with HDV video from FCP X and FCP 7?

AVCHD exported from FCP X as ProRes 422 works perfectly in iDVD producing a 16:9 DVD.
HDV doesn't, even though QT Player plays it perfectly.
The odd thing is that 4 years ago, using legacy FCP my exported HDV videos had no problems being recognised as 16:9 by iDVD.
So why are FCP X produced HDV videos not recognised as 16:9?
P.S.  I know that iDVD never recognised DV in the 16:9 format but it always worked with HDV.
Incidentally, the old trick of opening it in QT Pro and changing the frame size to 1024 x 576 does not work!
Even stranger, I have just opened the HDV clips in FCP 7 and exported them as a QuickTime Movie.
iDVD plays them back in the correct aspect ratio but look at the effect  .  .  .  .  muted colours and green patterns all over.
This never happened in the past!

I mentioned several problems so I don't know which one you are referring to.
After experimenting I found some workarounds.
To cure the squashed image I created a ProRes 422 preset in Compressor 4 with a frame size of 1920 x 1080 and exported from FCP X using Compressor Presets.
Everything now works perfectly except the encoding seems to take  longer.
I got rid of the moire pattern when using FCP 7 by exporting as ProRes 422 1920 x 1080.

  • Premiere elements 12: how 2 burn video with menu on avchd disk with 1280x720

Hi, I have a source HD video (from TV) in resolution 1280x720/50. In export presets for avchd disk I only can find presets for 1440x1080 and 1920x1080. I'd like to export this video with menus in 1280x720 which is original resolution to AVCHD disk.
    How to handle?
    Regards, Juergen

    Juegen
No version of Premiere Elements lets you produce a DVD disc with or without menus with AVCHD format of 1280 x 720 at 50 progressive frames per second.
The burn to disc, DVD, AVCHD, and Blu-ray are offered as you found them.
You could burn your Premiere Elements 12 Timeline content to a file AVCHD.mp4 (720p50) via Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 - HD 720p50. And, then burn that file to a DVD disc as data disc if the disc capacity allowed. But you would not have any menus. Disc menus are offered only for burn to disc/burn to folder. And, important, stop markers do not function at playback of the Premiere Elements (any version) AVCHD DVD or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc.
Please let us know if you need clarification on anything written.
    Thank you.
