Mixing desk separation

Hi, I'm Ben and this is my first post. I've got loads of useful help from these forums so far- great! So here's my first post...
I live in Brazil and produce dub reggae. I frequently A/B my material with other producers' work, the majority of whom use analogue desks. Their desks create a real sense of separation and distinction between instrumental parts, sonic power and LOUDNESS. I am delighted with Logic 7 Pro and the tracks I produce sound great to me production wise. I have released 4 records on vinyl 12" which has shown me how the mastering process helped hugely, but even so, my contemporaries with desks seem to just get so much more power and oomph. Ideally, Logic's overall excellence should surely produce something with that punch? I have considered plugs like sonic maximizer but that seems to just make everything too in your face.

i actually agree with you ben, i love logic but the summing in digital bus is really poor.i m mixing all my project on a pure analog studio(neve vr,pultech,tl audio,real plate ,etc..) but most of the time i bounce at the end of the session each track separatly(with effect for each) just in case i wanna change the structure ,i wana do a dub version or whatever.each time i have to realigne all those bounce in logic, i just wanna cry;)the summing is just a joke compare to my cd master.i first thought we did mistake during the bounce,i came back with bounced session to the studio,split on the neve...then everything was right like the master...ouff.anyway from there i start discovering the limit of daw summing.i tried many diferent surface,logic,protools hd,sadie,sonar without many difference and after many discussion with engeneer and mastering engeneer i finally get a 20 input summing desk from tubetech.

that's a really simple gear ,there's no fader ,no pan,nothing except a big knob that let u turn the master output up or down.there is othe summing rack like that specially the SPL and the spider (cranesong) that sound's really good to,and are more complete.
now if u go for this option don't forget u will have to buy at least a 16 output convert(apogee da16 x just rock)and a proper input converter to come back in logic(hedd from cranesong for ex).
if u did all that u just spend around 10 or 12000$,i did this choice first cause i m living with music,second cause i m a freak and was really embarassed to go back in another studio every time i had to sum properly a simple dub.just think about that.anlalog desk will give u largeness,from the top to the bottom,an to specially deepness,a proprer summing of all the spectral frequencies,but it will have a price extramaly expensive for what it is..

  • How do I route my mixing desk so that it can control the mixer in logic?

    I recently purchased a new set of monitors a mixing desk and a two channel usb device to operate them through my mac.I plugged the usb device into one of the usb ports and the monitors into output channel of the usb device, logic recognizes the device instantly and I can get sound through them.I then connect two cables(left and right) running from the main outputs of the mixing desk into the input channel of the usb device and then try moving the faders to see if it interacts with logics mixer but no joy.I have all the E Q's and the gains up but it seems no signals are running through it as none of the channel strip meters are lighting up,the mixing desk is a Behringer XENYX 1832 and the usb device is a UCA200 is there something I have to do in logic first to get the desk to interact like assigning it to logics mixer or going through some sort of preference menu or have I simply got it routed incorrectly? Any experienced advice would be valuable as this is the first time I have used a mixing desk.

    The faders on your mixer are for controlling audio going through it's channels. Nothing to do with Logic.
    In order to have faders that control Logic, you must have a mixer or control surface capable of talking to Logic via MIDI. What you have will not do it.

  • Setting up macbook pro with garage band and a mixing desk. NEED HELP ASAP!!

    Hi everybody i have an issue which has been an issue for some time now.
    i have a Behringer XENYX1222fx mxing desk, and a new macbook pro with the software 10.6.2 i am also using Garage band 09. when using this i am trying to set up my bass guitar through the mixing desk and the DI box which connects through a usb to the mac.
    i can not get a signal/level come through to the macbook on garage band. i am getting a signal through on the mixing desk but nothing at all on garage band.
    can someone send me the instructions to set it up? is it in system preferences in the input and output i really dont know please can i have as many options as possible.

    Scott, I can relate. It's happened to me too!
    It's time to play signal chain detective.
    First, are you sure you are getting output from your bass? Plug it into an amp and test. (Once I figured out that the battery in my bass had died. New battery: problem solved.)
    Once you know you're getting a signal from the bass, then check to be sure the mixer is outputting the signal. Run the outputs from the mixer into an amp.
    Once you know your bass and mixer are cooperating, then it is time to engage the interface.
    Be sure the preferences for the input to recgonize the interface are set BOTH in GarageBand and the OS generally. The problem is that when you connect an interface, GarageBand will see it and ask if you want to use that or line in. Be sure the interface is selected. For the OS preferences, click on the Apple logo and go to system preferences.
    Finally, you might ask a friend to bring over an Apple laptop to eliminate the possibility of something wrong with your MBP, or lug your gear to his or her house, and try it. (Just remember to leave with all the settings restored to how you found them.)
    If you live within reach of an Apple store, you can go to the genius bar.
    And if nothing works, you can pay for a call to Apple support, or perhaps the support line for the maker of your audio interface.
    Good luck. I know it can be frustrating when you want to make music ad you are spending a lot of time horsing around with the technology.

  • Just received my G5...now how do I plug the mixing desk in here?

    Hi,
    I'm planning to do music and record with this computer. So far with the pcs I've had, I route my hardware including the mic, to the mixing desk that then through the cd/tape in/out I connect the desk to the soundcard's 4 inputs/outputs. Thing is, I see no inputs/outputs in this machine, I don't even see a soundcard configuration pannel anywhere...can someone help me here?
    I was told that the internal soundcard was good enough to do recordings on a pretty good level...but where is this soundcard? Doesn't it have any outputs/inputs? How do you guys connect stuff to it?

    I'd stay away from USB interfaces.
    I disagree. I've been using a Tascam US-122 for two years and have zero problems. I've recorded albums, music for television, commercials. I do agree not all USB interfaces are created equal, but for the money this one has been getting the job done. My two cents anyway...

  • Using an Analogue mixing desk with garageband?

    Hi guys,
    As you can tell i'm really not a techie!
    I'm looking to use a mixing desk with garageband, it's analogue and i have the new macbook pro retina, but I don't know how i could connect it to my mac. I need it for recording demos, but firstly will it be compatible? I dont wanna have to spend £90 on a pricey iRig when i already have a perfectly good Roland vs1680 sat here. Also, would I be able to use it to convert my guitar sound and output MIDI synthesised sounds from my mac to my Line 6 Amplifier?

    unfortunately I do not have a second mac (g5 or otherwise as I sold it when I bought new one lol) to try this method. I did notice m-audio had updated there drivers for osx 10.4 but unfortunately these drivers only work for g5/g4/g3 mac and not for the intel mac keyboards so at the moment I do not have a workaround for this problem. I have emailed m-audio and asked for a timeframe for drivers but have not received a response yet so at the moment I am unaware of any usb midi keyboard that works natively for a intel mac which is rather tragic lol as garageband is basically unuseable without a method of inputting midi but hopefully someone will prove me wrong and suggest a solution. On another issue my usb keyboard and mouse had the freezing problem that seems quite common but after a lengthy phonecall to apple I asked for a replacement wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse which I have received and can report works absolutely perfectly so there may have been a bad batch of usb keyboard/mouse combinations made. Otherwise everything is working perfectly and I am delighted with the new imac

    USB is USB even over Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt can not make USB any faster or better.

  • Mixing Desk to Mac Book Pro

    hey, I'm looking to hook up my Mac Book to a 12 Chan Soundcraft desk.
    I presume two XLR leads out of the desk into my audio input will do the trick?

    Should be fairly staight forward?
    as long as you have the proper cabling.
    Any other options?
    if the console has unbalanced outs (typically 1/4"), you could use those.

  • Anyone recommend a  Mixer/FW interface with L8?

    A few months ago I replaced my analogue mixing desk + original MOTU 828 with a MOTU896 Mk3
    I cant hear the difference between the MK3 and the original setup ( through powered DynAudio BM5 A monitors).
    The 896 is packed with features which I would never use and is counter intuitive, with cheap small fiddly knobs. There is no simple way to get a separate 3 simple independent mixes: i) to head phones ii) to computer for recording and iii) a third mix purely to the monitors.
    MOTU UK admit this is not possible without a third piece of gear which involves assigning a separate stereo mix from Logic to the MOTU and then to a separate analogue fader which directly controls the monitor level.
    My studio is designed for overdubs and composition, not for mixing/mastering etc and have concluded this mixerless setup was a mistake.
    My question is: has anybody used a smallish mixer with fire wire built in that is compatible with/had good results with Logic 8?
    So far the M - Audio NRV 10 looks like the answer. It has the added advantage of being able to send 10 outputs from Logic back into the mixer for outboard mixing

    It is all depending on the amount of channels you need. Inputs/Outputs?
    I could recommend the TC Electronic Studio Konnekt 48 if 4 mic inputs are enough. It offers you 2 headphone mixes straight from the box trough 2 aux busses. Also this unit has some great features never seen with other units like fantastic effects, that can be used in the low-latency monitor/headphone mix or as a VST plugin!     Anyway, I am still waiting for mine, I just ordered one for the tiny studio I have at home.
    Another choice could be the Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 desk, which is awesome. In need for a live mixer, studio mixer, firewire interface, 16 state of the art class A mic pre's and channel strips, accompanied by loads of compressors, noise gates and effects and all packed in one sturdy 19" box?- this is it. Retail est. $2k, same in Euros. Pound? Very fluctuating lately, not? Well, I am seriously thinking of getting this desk too when it is available and the price is nice.     Hi - I have just purchased Audition 3 and I was wondering what firewire or usb mixer is recommended (or what are you using) I would love to have the transport control panel on my mixing desk - also will these mixers control the read / write on the volume within a track - any help would be much appreciated - btw I would love an 8 or 16 channel desk (anyone help)

  • Analogue Mixer - looking for opinion on different ones

    Hi,
    Since I saw the post on analogue summing,I decided to jump in,albeit with a slightly different post.
    I miss the days of analogue mixing,and find that a mixer is still a very useful tool,especially when tracking multi-mic setups,and also mixing down large sessions.I am in the middle of budgeting a home studio,which I will execute in the coming months.I am planning on installing a 32 channel mixer.
    I would love to hear impressions,opinions,etc... on analogue desks,which fall into my budget,which for the mixer is about 7K USD.
    So with that in mind,fire away!

    I tried some of the summing boxes,I had the "demo" version of the Neve 88XX one...I did not like it.I also tried the Manley one,it was good,but not enough routing capabilities...
    The reason I need a mixing desk is manyfold:
    1. I can do 1/2 desk for "tracking" and do the other 1/2 desk for "monitoring",16 tracks In,16 Out.This requires 32 tracks.
    2. Until I get a PT HD system,ergo minimal latency,I will have to monitor "live" to my laptop system I have now,without any latency.This means muting my Logic recording tracks,and only playing back what is already recorded,while listening thru the mixer to the live performance.I will get two reverb/delay units to give ambience while tracking.
    3.Because the routing happens on the press of buttons,it is MUCH faster than having to set up a complex monitoring situation inside the box.When I record artists,changing their headphone mix occurs often all along the tracking session,and I find it easier to just reach for the right knob/fader and adjust almost instantly,instead of trying to find a track amongst many in the computer.I've done this for years,and to me this STILL is faster,at least how I do it.
    4.I can do more complex routing and mixing than just summing to a stereo buss.IE when I mic up a drumkit,I like to mixdown only the toms to stereo,otherwise all other mics get their own channel.Also when I mic amplifiers (bass,guitar) I like to have two multi-mic setups going all the time,so I can have the same performance with two entirely different sounds recorded,so I can change the "vibe" of the song easily,and without resorting to processing the same audio file.
    5.By having EQ and an insert point on the mixer,I can do very basic signal processing BEFORE going "to tape".IE removing low end rumble,adding a little hardware compression,etc...this can save time later on as well as processing power of the laptop.
    6.When mixing,I can access all 32 track outputs,and have the summing happen in the analogue world.This has always sounded better to me than ANY D.A.W. summing.That is just my personal opinion.Most songs that I have worked on over the years can be broken out into 32 tracks or less from a D.A.W. for final mixing.
    Well..there's my reasons for getting an analogue mixer.

  • Headphone Mixes from Logic

    I am considering rationalising my studio to a mixerless set up ( see Jim Frazier's comments in a recent thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8174674#8174674)
    I bring live projects from studios and add over dubs such as vocals, horns, percussion etc. I have a simple headphone monitoring system which is perfect for up to 4 musicians to record to what is already in Logic - say a horn section and percussionist.
    So far all monitoring in my set up has run from the mixing desk which is the hub of all the inputs and outputs via a loom to my MOTU 828 - but my ideas have been opened up by comments such as Jim's ( see above thread) where he describes an essentially mixerless set up involving such devices as a Mackie Big Knob or Presonus + an Apogee Ensemble + A control Surface ( Mackie or Euphonix type thing)
    I have 3 questions:
    i) Practically speaking what is the best way to plug mics and line inputs into the back of the audio interface. Do most 'mixerless' studios use some kind of rack patch bay.. or am I exaggerating the hassle of having to lean over a rack where the inputs for mic are facing the wrong way?
    ii) Is it practical and easy to create separate software mixes ( say one for horn section and one for percussionist) in Logic and route them to headphones via outputs of the Presonus/Mackie Big Knob type studio control box? Do you use Software Monitoring and is latency an issue here?
    iii) Could someone just confirm the basic bits of gear that one needs to do this: ie Mac + Audio Interface + Patch Bay (?) + Studio Control Box + Control Surface

    I'd be curious what the other "mixerless" guys are doing as well, but I can tell you how I'm managing things here.
    In my studio, I have dedicated mic pres, so I don't plug my mics into an audio interface. The mics get plugged from the mic preamps right to the converters, which in my case, is a Apogee Rosetta 800, as well as Lavry 4496's.
    I have XRL jacks out in the studio, and these jacks have their cable run through the wall, and into the control room, where they terminate to a patch bay. I also have the ins and outs of my mic pres, and hardware compressors coming up at the patch bay, as well as the I/O's of my converters. Basically, any piece of gear in my control room with an input and output is set-up to be available at the patch bays.
    So when I plug a mic into the XLR wall jack out in the studio, I simply connect patch cables at the patch bay, to designate whatever signal flow I want for that session. This is how the "big" studios have done it for decades, and once you take the time and money to set this up, you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner.
    I too, do all overdubs here at my studio, Any live tracking with a rhythm section, is always done elsewhere. But aside from me recording my own guitars, I too often work with percussionists, horn sections, string players, and vocal groups, sometimes as many as 6 to 8 singers at a time.
    My solution for having separate headphone mixes without a mixer was to get a dedicated headphone system. I ended up going with the Hear Technologies Hear Back system.

    This system can send something like ten different audio paths to the Hearback satellite mixers, where the talent out in the studio can customize their mix to their hearts content. However, I don't ever give anyone THAT much control . I keep it pretty simple... a stereo mix of the track, a "more me" knob, so they can control their voice or instrument level within the track, and I also give a reverb send, so they can add reverb to their voice or instrument, without me ever having to hear it in the control room.
    This system is fed from the separate outputs of my converters, and my Logic template that all songs start from is set-up so that all my Aux tracks are feeding this headphone hub in the manner I described above. So all routing does take place from within Logic.
    I do monitor with software monitoring on, but it wasn't until I got the Apogee Symphony system that I was able to do that reliably. Before the Apogee system, I used the Total mix latency free software that came with my RME FF800, much like the cue mix software that came with your MOTU piece. But monitoring in software outside of Logic always felt "left footed" to me. I MUCH prefer the DAW work like a tape machine as far as that aspect goes.
    And I do have to admit, it's finally nice to be able monitor through Logic, in real time, with no perceivable latency at all. I went 6 years without a mixer, waiting for technology to allow this type of performance from a native system. The Apogee Symphony card along with the 8 core MacPro finally got me there.
    And as I mentioned in that thread you linked to, I use a Presonus Central Station as talkback to the talent, as well as a master control room volume knob, and speaker selector.
    All in all, it's working out really, really well.
    I will say though, that having a dedicated hardware mixer is not necessarily a "bad" thing, and until you have a system where latency THROUGH Logic is basically undetectable, I would move slowly, and cautiously. It's imperative that the talent be able to hear their instrument or voice as they are used to. Any detectable latency, even a small amount, WILL deteriorate a performance, no matter what any body tries to tell you. And, it makes your studio appear "semi-pro".
    Latency free software like Cue Mix or Total Mix can make the mixerless studio a reality though, when throughput latency is detectable. It worked for me for years.

  • Does anybody have any solution for a non-functioning key on a macbook pro

    Description of problem:  The right arrow key will not work or function.
    Other details:  At startup, when a button either the Apple, Finder, File, etc are pressed the highlighter moves to the right and repeats moving to the right as if the right arrow key is stuck.  When another key (any) is pressed it stops and all other keys function properly.  The right arrow key will not work.
    Steps I have tried to resolve the issue.  Rebooting, SMC reset, removing key tab and cleaning.
    Any ideas????

    first of: you can edit previous posts in a time-frame of some minutes (haven't measured it ...).
    After that they become non-editable.
    I admit I have used microphones some years back with and without PCs (have switched to Macs 2.5 years ago).
    But I always had the mics connected to a mixing desk, which provided Phantom Power.
    Since I gave up my 'Singing Career' (wasn't good enough) I also abandoned the use of microphones.
    To your questions:
    It might be that PCs with specified Microphone-In ports are also providing power to them or the microphones themselves do not need any power.
    And the 'compatible with...' refers to the usage on computers in general.
    The iMic from Griffin works with OSX 10.5 (scroll down on the webpage to 'Product Compatibility' the left icon symbolizes OSX 10.5).
    As said above, I am no longer up-to-date in usage of microphones, but when you want to use a microphone with the standard connector you have to get either a microphone preamp or a mixer.
    If you use the mic only (really only) with your Mac Pro, you might wanna look for USB-connected mics from Samson or Audio Technica for example.
    And don't get upset, I understand you fully and any kind of 'insult' is for the manufacturers and not for me

  • Trouble viewing audio levels in Voice Over tool

    Hello,
    I often record voice over into Final Cut Pro using the Voice Over tool. In the middle section of the Voice Over window there is a 'Level' meter that flashes Green to Yellow and Red, illustrating the level of audio being fed into the Mac. For some reason though, this has stopped working for me.
    My set up is this: A Mic in our voice over booth connects to a Soundcraft 4 channel mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is linked to a JVC HD tape desk, which is connected to the Mac via FireWire.
    Previously, to capture Voice Over I set the tape deck to 'Line' input, in 'DV' mode and set the Voice Over tool to 'DV Audio' as the source.
    I can see sound levels on the mixing desk. I can see sound levels on the tape deck, but I can't see sound levels on the Mac's VO tool. Despite this, it does still capture voice over (I just can't 'see' it).
    This problem is annoying because it means Im unsure whether the Mac is actually receiving an audio feed or not unless I do a test recording first.
    Any suggestions as to why the Voice Over tool would suddenly stop showing me Levels, would be greatly appreciated!

    My secondary Mac works fine when the AV settings are set to HDV, despite it receiving standard DV audio input. Whether FCP is set to DV or not doesn't seem to matter in this case.
    In trying to resolve the issue I played around with DV/HDV settings within FCP and the Deck; trying different combinations, but with no success.
    +To recap (just to clarify in my own head), the situation is this:+
    +Both of my Macs, Primary and Secondary, happily record Voice Over, via the Voice Over tool.+
    +The Mic in the sound room connects to a Mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is also connected to 2 sets of headphones, one for the Artist and one for the Engineer. 2 audio jacks connect the mixing desk to the JVC tape deck. The JVC tape deck connects to my Mac via FireWire to the port at the rear of the Mac.+
    +The issue is that the Primary Mac does not display audio Levels in the Voice Over tool, whilst it does on the Secondary Mac.+
    +While Im recording Voice Over on my secondary Mac I can see that there is an Audio input because the Green/Yellow/Red bar flashes up. On my Primary mac this bar is inactive and therefore gives me no clues as to the level of audio being fed into the Mac.+

    I'd liek to record vocals in logic where the vocalist can hear the backing track and their vocal in the headphones.
    I have a digi design 002 rack and a small spirit mixing desk.
    I was wondering what the best way to go about this would be re: routing of outputs/busses/how to setup fold back with no latency

  • How do I get multiple inputs?

    Hi. I have Logic Pro 9 installed on my Macbook and on my iMac. I have tried to use a 12 channel mixing desk as the inputs for recording, but it will only ever allow me to select 2 inputs. This is on my Macbook only, I don't have the same problem on my iMac.  Previously I have a 2 input device (an Apogee Duet) and used this on both computers. When I connect the mixing desk (Yamaha MG166cx-usb via the firewire to USB connector, it shows up in the preferences and allows me to select it as the input and output device under preferences, audio, devices, core audio option. If I add a new audio track, it will only still show me the option of selecting input 1 or input 2. If I do the same on my iMac, it will show multiple inputs. I have uninstalled my previous audio device, and also uninstalled Logic, moved to trash, downloaded again, but the same symptoms are there.

    Yes. Of course I read the manual. It quite clearly shows in Cubase, which I haven't installed and don't use 4 stereo and 8 monoaural tracks. It's on page 11 of the hard copy manual. I have however just set up a blank project and tried recording from different channels on the mixer. (1 and 5). I can record either one individually, but only two channels simulaneously, but no more than two channels it seems. Are you saying this is all I ever will achieve with this desk? Seems a bit pointless almost to sell a desk with multiple channels yet only lets you record two of them with one of it's selling points - a USB connection facility. It's not the reason I bought the desk by the way, I use an Apogee Duet to record at home, I just wanted to be able to set up and record each individual channel during a live performance via the PA and then clean up and mix properly at home. Guess I'm not going to get far on that front
