Mixing down causes new crash - due soon!

This project is due on Monday - PLEASE HELP.
I have a simple podcast-type project of a male voice, some music bumps in and out. Everything is joined, not many edits left. The project is over 2 hours long. At 1 hour, it was exporting test mp3s fine. Now, it crashes around 1 and 1/2 hours of the mixdown (not the exact same point every crash). I tried diff. settings - still crashing. Never has GB crashes like this in past.
Can the time length trigger a crash on export? Do I have to cut the thing into sections for export?
Thank you for any feedback....

  • Trying to pin down cause of crash...

I can't seem to figure out why iMovie 6.0.2 HD keeps crashing on my G5 Dual 2.5 machine running 10.4.7.
It mostly crashes when I am trying to apply the Fast/Slow/Reverse Video FX. Usually, I'll shift-select a few clips, apply the FX, then it'll get through one or two then suddenly the app will just disappear.
Should I be concentrating on iMovie itself or the actual clips? The clips were imported from a Canon Elura 80 DV camera, so nothing weird there.
How does one go about trapping these types of errors? God, do I miss the OS 9 days when you at least got a "Type -90" error or something that could help you. Now it's "I'm shutting down for no reason."

I couldn't tell you the answer to that, but the people at Roland might. If the same incompatible extension is involved then it would not solve the problem. It might simply be easier to pester Roland for an updated extension.
If there are no panics in safe mode use, then I would uninstall all the third-party extensions listed in your panic log:
    jp.co.roland.RDUSB00DEDev(1.0.0)
    de.access-music.virus_ti.driver.audio 2.0.3
    com.caiaq.driver.NIUSBMaschineControllerDriver 2.3.9
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.7.2
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.1
    com.Apogee.driver.EnsembleFWOverideDriver 1.4.4
    com.caiaq.driver.NIUSBAudioDriver 2.2.15
Now I have no idea to what hardware or software the above are associated, but I would uninstall both the software and hardware involved to be sure the extensions are removed. Then reinstall one at a time testing thoroughly after each installation. This will help you track down which particular extension is causing the problem.

  • Is there a way to track down the cause of crashes in SAFARI?

Not long ago I was able to eliminate one type of crash I had been having in SAFARI by following a suggestion made in this forum. Those crashes, however, were of the type that generated a 'crash report.' So they left a kind of 'paper trail' as to what was causing them.
More recently I have been having frequent crashes that don't result in such reports. These crashes occur apparently randomly when I mouseclick on a link. The spinning beach ball appears on-screen and never leaves.
Is there a way to find out exactly what is causing these crashes?
    Thanks.

    Hello Michael:
I have not yet seen a
good approach to using that information (short of
    deleting the account).
better search some yourself Barry <G>
if something runs fine in another account - one can isolate the cause to one of the plist files in the main acct Home/Library/Preferences/ or possibly an add-on in Home/Library/Internet Pug-Ins or ...Input Managers for example.
If there is the same problem in the new acct - you can discount anything with the main acct user library - plists, caches, plugins, input managers, the whole lot.
A useful tool is Console - found in Applications/Utilities/ keep it running while the 'problem' in question crops up & see if any messages pop up in either the system log or console log. Sometimes these will point straight at the problem area, other times no help at all.

  • What causes my iTunes to crash as soon as I open it

What causes iTunes to crash as soon as it tries to open? I never had any problems in the past. It just started happening a few days ago. I tried to reload it but it still crashes. Any suggestions?

For now and until Apple fixes the bug, the only solution I have found is to turn the proxy off in the Network settings. If you need to use a proxy server for work/school, you are best off with using Firefox. Firefox has a number of add-ons that allow you to turn the proxy on and off (for instance Switchproxy, which is very useful and allows you to turn the proxy on only selectively). • Software Updates causing application crashes

    Hello,
I just installed a group of updates including security 2010-4, safari 5, itunes 9.2 and java 7.
Immediately I am having issues with application crashes. I am trying to run inkscape which runs under x11.
Initially it wouldn't even start up. After I repaired permissions and verified the disk and did a couple restarts it will start but crashes as soon as I try to use it (perform a copy and paste for example).
I am desperate to get back to work and I really do appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Firefox (Linux) crashes as soon as it "starts" and the saved tabs won't go away no matter what, profilemanager doesn't work, only opens another firefox.

My firefox on linux ubuntu 9.1 ALWAYS crashes on startup. But only on my regular logon (is it another Profile?), it says hrtimer_nanosleep on system monitor on the firefox_bin. It just did that one time and i can't get it to work. It crashes as soon as i start firefox with the tabs that were upp when it started crashing. Safe-mode is tested and did not work. I saw something about deleting / create new profile. but when i type in firefox -ProfileManager its only starts up another firefox that crashes. And i also saw that someone erased a file named secmod.db. I do NOT have this file. The whole firefox/mozilla files are all messed up in my system but where do i find the profile? It's all a mess this thing. and it's making me kinda pissed.

    If that does not work,
Start '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web Link} by holding down the '''<Shift><br> ''(Mac Options)'' ''' key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
Start your '''Computer''' in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try '''Safe''' web sites.

  • Satellite M100 - TFncKy crashing as soon as Windows logs on

Been having this problem with only one of the user accounts on my M100, the other account doesn't have the problem.
As soon as I am logged in to Windows a message pops-up that TFncKy has unexpectedly quit (send error report, don't send error report, etc) and every time one of the directional buttons or multimedia buttons is pressed the same unexpectedly quit message comes up, so it is pretty frequent/frustrating, and also makes all these keys effectively uselss.
I've also tried opening the file at C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Controls\TFncKy.exe directly, but it crashes as soon as its' opened.
The computer is virtually brand new with minimal additional programs installed that it could clash with.
Has anyone come accross this problem before? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem with my sattelite A110-178
2 out of 3 when i log on to windows the TFncKy.exe crashes.
Also experience bad lan drivers, the notebook freezes when i try to acces the network shares.
whemn i work wireless the problem doesnt appear.
already upgraded bios and installed the drivers again but no go.
after crash a reboor works miracles and no problem for the rest of the day.
Also exprerience trouble with the soundcard and the virtual sound.
It worked proparly but now the sound is 4 notches down, cant get it back on the same volume level.
downloaded drivers from realtek helped 30 minutes then same problem appeared
already re installed chipset driver, no go
installed windows XP proffesional and not the default home version
dont know if problem appears there, didnt try it.

  • 2 days trying and my MBP still crashes, due to maxed out memory. Can someone suggest any other solutions?

    Problem description:
About 3 minutes after I start up, without me opening any applications aprt from activity monitor, the memory pressure graph turns red, kernel_task goes up to 5-6GB, then I have 2-3 mdworker pricess at about 500MB with the total memory at 7.8-8GB. The MAC becomes less responsive and after a while it freezes, I can only use the power button to re-boot it.
In safe mode i don;t have these memory issues (kernel_task at 550MB and no mdworker process running). Strangely Firefox works well but Safari and Chrome have issue (mainly with fonts but also, some links are not clickable)
    First Encounter:
The first time I epxerienced a freeze was when I deleted a timemachine backup and let it overnight to do a new one from scratch- Mac was frozen in the morning. Then worked well during the day (and I think i updated various software but not sure which) and i tried to do another one after full backup in the evening after disabling Power Nap and put hard drives to sleep in Energy Settings (which I thought had caused the crash). It crashed again in the morning but it also started having the memory issues desribed above.
[I downloaded Macupdate desktop last week and found various 3rd apart software that where not up to date. I have since used that to update them and I suspect that it may have updated something that is not maverics compatible but this is just a guess of what may have cause this. ]
What I have done to resolve:
I have deleted all software I thought could be causing the issue and I have re-installed maverircs twice (from the cmd+R menu not full format and  instalation).
I also installed the latest version of dropbox, flash while I have deleted applications such us hidden, little snitch, team viewer, oaragon NTFS, MacUpdate, Citrix). Also stoped Skype, deamonmanager and crashplan to lauch at starup leaving only dropbox and google drive).
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'll start by saying a big thanks to Allan and Erich. Your promt responses made me hopeful that there is someone else out there who is listening and that if I get more data someone will figure it out. So I have spend many more hours, trying to get you more data which by luck led me to the solution. So thank you both!
    Here's the full answer:
I thought I had uninstalled avast and thanks that you pointed out that it still wasn't. Althought I had figured out i was supposed to delete stuff under /library/ and system/library I had not realised that there was one more library inside user which was hidden. Your Avast comment make me find that library too and I deleted a bunch of applications.
No back to the probem which may have been solved, but it has only been stable for 10min. [i'll write everything down in case it helps others]
I realised that before Kernel_task a couple of mdworker processes popped up first each using about 1.5GB of memory and then kernel_task took over the majority of memory (with the mdworkers multiplying and each having about 500MB). I realised that I could click the info button in activity monitor for the mdworker, and it had a "open files and ports" section. I copy pasted than and got the below text

This end bit has something to do with mail and it's synching to gmail. So I opened mail and deleted all the mail accounts. (I have 2 gmails and a yahoo). That did not at first solve the problem so I went in and tried to create an icloud mail account but this kept crashing mail. So then I just re-entered the info for one of the gmail accounts which it accepted whithout crashing. Shortly after the memory was down and now 10mins later things look normal and mail continues to sync with gmail.
I hope this is the end of it, but i'll keep you posted if it isn't...

  • Use of discrete graphics causes hard crash - (MacBook Pro 2010 with ML 10.8.2/3)

I have a client with a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro. He was having crashes with Lion so I upgraded him to Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The crashes did not go away.
I troubleshooted and with the help of gfxCardStatus noticed that every time his machine went to use the discrete graphcis he got the gray hard crash screen and system had to restart. Back then I tried a beta of 10.8.3 and it didn't help.
I noticed that if I created another user account (profile) it would not crash when the discrete graphics card was called upon.
So, I re-installed the OS (to 10.8.2), created a new profile and manually migrated pictures, documents, keychain, mail, movies, music and re-installed the relevant Applications. Everything was working fine and my client went on a trip to Europe and soon the crashes began again. Then he upgraded to 10.8.3 and the crashes got even more frequent (it seems 10.8.3 puts more applications on the discrete graphics list so it switches even more).
I am wondering what could have caused the crashes to begin. It was before he upgraded to 10.8.3. Some application or something he was using must have changed a setting or corrupted something to cause the crashing to begin. I haven't done this yet, but I'm sure if I create another user account it won't crash on it.
Any ideas where to turn my attention to see what is causing the shift from his working user account to a crash-causing one?
He has iLife, Office 2011, Final Cut Pro X, iPhoto Library Manager, VLC, Audacity, DropBox, FileMaker Pro 11, Flip4Mac Player, Fuze, GotoAssist, Handbrake, Skype, iSkySoft DVD Creator, iSkySoft Video Convertor, Onyx and Skype.
I know there are *MANY* others having problems with the automatic graphics card switching and it seems some are having more problems when gfxCardStatus is installed?

    is this your MacBook:
TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Take a copy of the article with you when you go for service. They need to run a SPECIAL diagnostic to decide whether you have this problem. Do not leave until they run the special diagnostic. The "overnight run" does not detect this problem.
If they confirm you have the problem, they will replace the graphics chip, which is part of the motherboard. be prepared to hand over your Mac for depot repair. (Your backups must be up-to-date).

  • Solenoid causing LabVIEW crash?

    Hi
I am using LabVIEW 8.6 with an NI-9481, 4 channel relay module (amongst others) to control a solenoid valve which opens and closes a hydraulic circuit. The relay module controls a 24V DC supply to the solenoid.
The solenoid valve is opened and the hydraulic circuit operates. Once a condition is reached, the solenoid valve is closed by LabVIEW,shutting down the hydraulics. A few seconds later, the computer restarts.  To try to remedy this problem a diode was fitted, parallel to the solenoid to protect the circuit from back EMF's generated by the collapsing magnetic field in the solenoid.  This reduced the problem but has not solved it.
Can anyone suggest any remedies? Could the back EMF pulse be the reason for the computer resetting itself? Or could there be another reason?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    John
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Could you be having a "blue screen of death"?  Just this morning I had to solve a problem with the PC restarting itself.  The error messages when Windows restarted told me nothing.  I found a tip on the forum how to turn on the blue screen message.  Go to My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery Settings, and uncheck the box that tells the PC to restart itself.  Once I did that, I saw I had a blue screen related to the serial driver for a USB/Serial port converter.  That led me down the path to updating the driver and all seems to be working fine for the moment.  Now why the blue screen what able to know which driver caused the problem, but Windows didn't know when it restarted, that just shows the idiocy of windows.
If you have a blue screen, this will show it and maybe give a clue as to whether you have a crash due to a driver issue or some power failure.

  • DW6, basic refresh causes instant crash

Hello, I have recently installed the creative cloud.  Everything appeared to install correctly at first glance.
Some apps such as photoshop, indesign, dreamweaver seem to be opening previously made files no problem.  But, I can reproduce an appcrash of dreamweaver CS6 every single time I hit the refresh button after making a change to the code on a number of files in a certain section of our website that includes javascript/jquery galleries in them.  I have opened many files now and can reproduce this crash on every file with these galleries and content sliders from one site we are making. I have both .shtml and .html versions of these pages and either one with the jquery galleries are crashing as soon as I make any code or text changes and try to hit refresh.
I run windows7 64bit.  I have the CS5 Master suite installed from previous.  I can't remove cs5 until I know cs6 is indeed working.  Right now I'm not able to save changes to a large number of files in dreamweaver.  So hopefully I don't need to uninstall CS5 just to test.  It appears to maybe be something with the extra javascript content slider/galleries on the page conflicting with dreamweaver during refresh or save.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    ----------------------------------possibly unrelated issue-------------------------
Also noticed during this time, first day of CS6 use attempts, I am having licensing issues requiring repeated sign ins at application load.
Presenting notice that my trial period was over and that I need to license the product.  I click the button for licensing it using my adobe ID and it works.  But this has happened now maybe 8 times today already during these crash and restart attempts.
Activated!  at least until I try to fire it up again.  I don't know if this licensing thing has anything at all to do with the crashes mentioned previously.  They seem unrelated since I have no trouble refreshing code or saving files in CS6 on files without the jquery slider/galleries.

Thanks Nancy.  I'll try disabling the live view javascript and external files loading and report back.
The site does have external files and does have use javascript and jquery.   My extensions are already turned off.
On the activation side, I just got done speaking with adobe support about that and they shared my screen and fixed some permission settings on a specific adobe system folder that was installed new with CS6.  I'm hoping that holds this time. Seems to be so far.
Otherwise, they took a quick look at my web pages crashing (the ones with and without javascript/jquery) and I showed how a single letter change of anything in code view and hitting refresh would crash the file immediately.   At first she said it was because I was using shtml files.  But the fact is the same crash occurs on our copy of the site that is only .html, without server side includes, proves that wrong. I showed her that as well.  Next she figured it was the jquery on those pages.
A supervisor came on the line to help further, supposedly.  She is the one that got the activation working.  But she also basically just told me that they don't support any jquery whatsoever as it is a third party piece of sofware.  Ok fine.  But we were able to build this site with CS5 dreamweaver with no issues a month ago.  The only issue working with CS5 is that you couldn't expect it to live preview the site consistently and was often slow on preview loading those external files and whatnot.  Never crashes to desktop, and certainly not for changing a single character in the code and saving or refreshing. I can reproduce this error with this site on standard html 5 .html files and the .shtml files alike.  Any page that has our content gallery slider in it. Crash on hitting the refresh button.
To me it's something with CS6 handling jquery.  This site validated with no errors last friday.  One warning on CSS that was more of a suggestion.  Sadly, our biggest reason for upgrading was for the "enhanced jquery" features.  But now I'm thinking that in their sales literature that their enhanced mobile jquery support just means support for their proprietary new jquery mobile modules they have created, and actually may crash on a lot of other sites people already had third party jquery in.  We are using almost the very newest standard jquery library.  I think there is one newer now, with some standard slider/gallery javascript functions and a couple custom scripts. This just saddens my heart a bit to upgrade and find out about these crashes.  I was certainly hoping for CS6 to be more accepting of newer web tech, not less. The woman simply repeated that dreamweaver does not support jquery.  And yet their main page for DW6 says this:
    "jQuery Mobile support
Add advanced interactivity with jQuery code hinting. jQuery makes it simple to add interactivity to web pages."
Is this the kind of sales tricks that occured when they supposedly started supporting "layers" and "divs" but in reality it was only supportying a thing called APdiv and APlayers.?
To top off the enjoyment of my phone support call so far, the supervisor hung up on me when I was asking if there was anyone to submit my html files to for possible future dreamweaver udpate teams to review, in case this was just something goofy causing this.  Since it only happens when trying to hit the refresh button.  She repeated one last time that only higher level support would look at files and that would cost me over $200 in support fees.    I asked if the forums or some dev site would be a good place to start looking into a solution.  She hung up.
Again, thanks for the tips Nancy.  I will try disabling some of those view options...  Anything to stop the dreaded CTDs.  But one of the major features in CS5 was the ability to be connected to your external files, search through the list of them, open some of them in code view, et al.   Is this a step backwards, or basically a workaround for brand new software already.  I suppose.  I hope this workaround of disabling features works for now otherwise DW6 is getting shelved until further notice.  I suppose I have 30 days to request my money back.
I hope I don't find these issues in other pieces of cs6 cloud.  I had already had an issue working with old cs5 photoshop files in cs6 trial.  Please let these be the only two issues to crop up. This cloud subscription idea is great, some of the new software features are great.  But not if I have to recreate everything.

  • JVM Crashes due to memory shortage ...

I have a Java application which runs as a server on my Windows 2000 Server machine having 2GB RAM and virtual memory specified as 2-4GB. I start the application with the options -Xms786m -Xms-786m.
I have around 1500 clients that connect to this server and I open 2 dedicated server sockets for each client. The clients keep sending reuests over these connections for which they get the response over these connections. I connect to an Oracle database using the oracle 'thin' driver for this.
Till recently everything was running fine until I made some very small changes such as addition of some 50-100 users and a few more request-response sets due to which I have run into trouble. My server keeps crashing as soon as it gets around 1600 clients and the memory used by the process reaches around 2GB(seen through Perfmon). Sometimes I get the error :
Exception in thread main java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: request <size> bytes for <reason>. Out of swap space
and sometimes the jvm terminates without any error/message.
I also profiled the server but there dont seem to be any problems with the objects on the heap. I know that this is because I am running short of native heap memory. How can I identify what is causing this and is there any way to increase this limit ?

Did you mean you use -Xms786m -Xmx786m?
If so, did you try increasing that to -Xms1024 -Xmx1024?
I thought I read somewhere that there is a ultimate limit of 2G for JRE on 32-bit Windows.
I would say that ultimately, if you find there is a JRE memory limitation that prevents a single JRE from using all available system memory, that you could always split your application into several separate JRE's that communicate with each other using the best interprocess service available. Split your app into an upper tier to handle all the client setup/teardown and a lower tier to handle other stuff. Or maybe some other logic split that works better for your application/design.

  • Vodaphone dongle causes panic crash. Help please?

It is essential for me to use a Vodaphone dongle for certain work purposes. After installing Snow Leopard, dongle caused panic crash in my MacBook Pro. 4 panic crashes and reports to Apple later ... alert message appears as follows.
    " System/Library/Extensions/USBExpressCard can't wake_Huawei.kext"
Check out support and hit on Welcome Wake Up issues. More like Unwelcome! Is this the problem?
Have reinstalled Leopard since this dongle is the only way to connect at work.
    Any ideas?

    Hi everyone
Vodafone really have not excelled here but today tracked down a solution using the GlobeTrotter application to intall the right modem driver (not sure but I think this was the problem causing kernel panics)
Here is how to do it...
    1. Make sure you delete any extension from the System/Library/Extensions folder containing the word "Huawei" in the file name
    2. Restart
    3. Download latest version of Vodafone Mobile Connect (which by itself will still cause kernel panic if you install and then plug dongle in and install.
    4. Download latest version of GlobeTrotter Connect (http://support.option.com/att/index.php?title=GT%20Connect%20for%20Mac%2010.4.11 ,%2010.5.x%20and%2010.6.x%20and%20Manual&action=module20/index)
    and install it.
If asked to confirm new network preferences do so - this I think installs the updated modem driver which I think was the source of the kernel panic previously.
    5. Then insert USB modem - should not cause kernel panic!
    6. Then run the Vodafone Mobile Connect software and press Activate
It works and does not crash!!
    Good luck!
