Mixing Footage shot on Wide Screen Camera with Non

Dear All
Firstly, thanks for your help and apologies for posting perhaps an amature question on this forum.
I'm trying to create a sequence which is using footage which was shot on two cameras. One wide screen, and one normal. As you can imagine, when it flips to the wide screen footage there are the black marks top and bottom. Question is, can I confert the wide screen footage to standard?

Are you talking about your computer which has no firewire port ? If YES you can have one of two options:
(a) Use FCI - Firewire card like this (preferred)

Correcting footage shot on auto-everything camera

Hi,
I searched under several keywords but couldn't find any posts relating to my problems.
I have some colour video footage shot outdoors on a camera that has no manual controls whatsoever.
Can anyone recommend a filter or other FCP technique (or any other software) to help me bring up the under-exposed footage and bring down the over-exposed parts to make a more uniform final product? The fluctuations happen pretty rapidly and I have 1.5 hours of footage so something automatic would be really helpful. Also the colour shifts slightly throughout the footage (also sometimes rapidly), but not as badly as the exposure. Any sugestions for solutions to the colour issue?

Get out the manual and read up on the 3 way color correction filter. Pretty simple to use for basic exposure issues and color balance. Not really automatic but remember that automatic was what caused the problem in the first place.
One method of changing cc settings as the footage changes is to apply the filter to a clip and then cut the clip where the changes occur. Select each segment and correct for exposure and balance, then add cross dissolves between the segments.

Mixing footage of different formats, different camera makes

I have a colleague who wants to mix footage of different formats, from different camera makes. I recommended against it but, I have a feeling he thinks I'm making up the rule. Can anyone point me to some authoritative sources on this standard.

It's pretty much common sense, really. Ideally you'll want to use identical cameras with identical settings. You can get away with certain differences, but those differences will add varying degrees of difficulty to your wok flow. Here's the priority you should be working towards.
1. Same model camera, with all settings identical.
2. Same resolution, frame rate and format, but different model cameras.
3. Same resolution and frame rate, but different formats.
4. Same resolution, but different frame rates.
5. Different everything.

Screen locked with non-English keyboard layout selected

Hello,
I use two keyboard character sets for keyboard. The switch between them is Command-Space.
I also have password requirement for waking up or going from screen saver.
Now if screensaver starts with non-English layout selected, I'm not able to login:
password is not accepted because keyboard layout is not English and switching
to English layout does not work in unlocking window.
Is there any way to change layout while in the unlock window?

Yes you are right, this is not a bug, it's just bad user interface. Just imagine the following scenario...
Writing a paper, switching to Greek to enter a couple of characters and leaving the mac idle for 5 mins.
The lock screen comes up asking for a password, unfortunately the user didn't change the language
before the mac was left idle and there is no option to change the language in the lock screen.
User has to hard reset to access the mac and let's hope that the user was saving his paper frequenlty.
So from a coding point of view this is not a bug, but from a user interface design it is a huge flaw

Wide screen problem with my humax

Am aware this is not a BT vision problem but any help appreciated.
Just connected a new TV to Vision box and Humax Freesat HD. For the HD box switched to hdmi connection but can't get a full screen resolution, tried going to settings etc...The TV is a widescreen LCD tv with full HD 1080p. My BT picture via scart is fine.

Are you saying you can't find the 1080 setting on the Humax box or it is set to 1080 and doesn't seem to work? The TV may have a different aspect setting for each input so make sure and check both ends.

Help - How to compress a 4x3 project shot as wide screen

Hello everyone, I've shot a short promo on my old PD150 which is naturally a 4x3 format. However, I use the camera setting that adds a crop top and bottom to make it 16x9. I import it to final cut pro and cut it as a 16 x 9 sequence. It works fine when I export as a quick time and to DVD. But when I try to compress it for viewing online - the picture gets squashed vertically so everything looks long and thin! Any ides on compression settings to sort this out? Thanks - any thoughts really appreciated

I have footage shot on a p2 camera, why won't all of the clips transfer when using Log and Transfer?

Only about 60% of the clips transferred over or was shown in the Log and Transfer window.

Offload the cards...back them up. That is priority #1. Do that first...then return the camera. Then try mucking about with this.
Back up the ENTIRE card structure.

IPhone 4 S - screen black with non-moving swirl. Help appreciated.

It sounds like the iPhone screen is not fully turning on or lighting up. I found this troubleshooting from the following article named:

Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.

How do you prepare FCP for footage shot on HD 1080i x 720?

Hi,
I have HD footage shot on a JVC camera 1080i x 720 that was saved to Quicklime on a DVD disc. I dragged and dropped the footage onto the timeline and, of course, the image doesn't know if it wants to look like 16:9 of 4:3.
I switched anamorphic on and off but that only increased the warp look.
1. Are there settings that need to be set before dropping the footage on the timeline?
2. Are there tutorials on this subject?
I'm using OS X 10.4.11 Mac 5

This is what I was told by the person that gave me the DVD. I did tell her to talk to the videographer and ask him various questions...what frame rate and aspect ratio was the footage shot at.
I'm still waiting for her response.
But I can not seem to get a normal visual with the footage I have as it appears on the timeline. Shouldn't I still be able to control or remedy that without any other information?

Working with DV Letterbox & DV Wide screen

Hello everyone,
I recently sent some tapes to a friend that was shot on a Sony Z1U in HDV 1080i then down-converted DV-letterbox. He would like to incorporate this footage with his own footage shot on Canon using the DV Widescreen setting.
I know that he wants to use my footage in DV-letterbox prominently in his project. I would like to help him but he is using iMovie HD06. I have searched the iMovie forum for an answer and posted a question there. I'm hoping that this might be a common issue shared by all users and with a simple solution.
When he imports his footage using the DV Widescreen setting, his footage is fine but the DV-letterbox footage is squashed. He tells me that if he edits in 4:3 then the reverse happens...my footage ok, his footage squashed.
If this is an iMovie related issue only, i apologize for the double post.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's nice of you to follow up with me.
We've been shooting a lot lately and we haven't had a chance to experiment yet. I often down convert from our Z1U to the companion deck but I have to admit that I've never tried a camera to camera firewire dub. My husband seems to think that the camera will record only whatever the lens is seeing but I'm thinking that the firewire connection trumps that theory and acts pretty much like a deck. We plan to visit our local media arts centre next week. They have a Canon camera that we can experiment with. I'll let you know how it goes.

After a few weeks of distressed e-mails from the fellow who is using iMovie to cut this project, he's found his own solution. He has purchased a program called iShowU HD for $60 US. His workflow is to digitize my footage into iMovie 720P then frame grab the footage from the computer screen? He then re-frames it to 16:9 with apparently no quality loss. This creates a file which he then imports into iMovie using DV Widescreen.
He says that it looks good but I have my doubts.

Does anyone have an idea if i can use a different camera (for instance the Canon XM2 Mini DV) for digitizing this material into FCP or do i need special equipement for it since i can not use the original Panasonic camera for digitizing anymore?

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or PAL monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

Frame Rate Issue With Footage Shot on HVX

I just shot something using the HVX and the 100Gb Firestore. The assistant cameraman set the firestore to make quicktime files to be brought into Final Cut. We shot most of our footage at high frame rates. When we watched already shot files through the camera's LCD screen, things appear in slow motion. However, when I bring the quicktime files into Final Cut, they play at normal speed. How do I convert the frame rate to what we shot at? Is there some import tool that does this automatically?

I partitioned my hard drive and I tried installing Microsoft windows and that worked just fine. But I do not understand why it wont install mac os x 10.5????? PLEASE HELP ME. Thanks Hamid
