Mixing G5 w/ Intel

My company is about to invest in some new equipment and I was wondering something. Right now we have 1 G5 2.5G and we are going to get another Mac to have at least a G5 in both edit suites. (Right now edit 2 has a G4.) Would it be a good idea to get a Mac Pro to run along side the G5 as long as they are both running the crossgrade working from the same RAID 6 SAN, or should we get another G5 instead. Just want to know if there are any issues of compatibility between the G5 and MacPro as far as file sharing, network connectivity... anything I might not have thought of...
Thanks. If this is vague, let me know what else I can include in the post.
Matt
EDIT: never mind, I found the answer here.

  • Any advice on mixing broadcom and intel iscsi nics between hyper-v hosts?

    Hello,
    Way back in 2008 when we configured our virtualized datacenter (used Virtual Iron, now defunct) it was recommended practice to use identical iscsi cards for all hostnodes.  We have since migrated to hyper-v 2008 r2, and are now moving on to hyper-v
    2012 r2.  We are currently spec'ing out a new hostnode, and I'm looking for advice on whether it's still the recommended practice to keep all iscsi cards as similar as possible.
    The hosts will be connected to a MD3220i SAN.
    The reason I'm asking is because we currently use Broadcom's 5709c's in all our hosts.  They have had their problems, so I'd like to move away from them.  Right now I have my eye on the Intel i350's.  It's a choice between the two since those
    are the only affordable offers we have.  I did a quick search online and found that Intel iscsi cards are much preferred over Broadcoms.  It's not in our budget to switch out all existing cards with intel's, so I'm wondering if it's now considered
    relatively safe practice to let iscsi cards from different manufacturers play together, since the technology has become more mature.  Any advice would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance

    Yes, it is still a recommended practice to use the same vendor for critical components across the cluster.  But it is not a requirement. It is recommended to use common hardware because management/troubleshooting is easier. If there is a networking
    problem and you are using two different vendors, which one is NOT going to say to contact the other vendor because, of course, it is not 'my' problem.
    You will also get some warnings in the cluster validation wizard.  These are warnings, so they don't prevent the building of the cluster, but they are warnings for good reason.
    Anytime you have two different vendors, that is going to be a potential point of problem when you need to debug.  And because neither vendor is likely to test their environment with the other vendor's products, they may say they don't support the configuration
    you are trying to put together.  So even though the validation wizard accepts it with warnings, you may end up with something that is unsupported by the NIC vendors.  Ask them what their stance is.

  • Getting lousy Image Prints from a Epson Stylus P2200 Printer & IMac (Intel)

    Ok here's the health warning - I'm a recent Windows to Mac convert - so this may well be me - but here goes ...
    I have an Epson Stylus P2200 Printer (which works great on Windows XP) and I am having trouble printing anything close to decent looking photos when its connected to the IMac. I've tried with both Aperture & Photoshop Elements - same problem/outcome. The photos come out in low resolution & v. poor color quality.
    I'm using the Stylus Photo 2200 (FW) driver that came standard with the IMAC - but it has very limited features compared to Windows - I have selected a ICC profile (downloaded from Epson) that matches the paper I am using.
    I suspect its me - but can anyone shed any light on where I'm going wrong?
    Does anyone have any experience of this driver - is it me? or is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks
    Chris
    IMac (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.5GB RAM

    I have two Epson printers, a 2200 and it's working fine with my MacBook Pro. Before you fiddle around with the Color Management, make sure your printer is in good working order and the latest Intel drivers are installed.
    Banding is not normal printer behavior. You mentioned that you're using a scan of a MacBeth color checker chart. You didn't say how the scan was made, but I'm assuming you know for sure that the banding is not in the image. On my 2200 I might get bad color if I don't use the correct profiles but I've never had banding problems unless the print heads need cleaning.
    Here are my suggestions:
    1. Don't use the drivers bundled with Mac OS X. Download the latest ones from support.epson.com. If you haven't checked recently, check and download them again. The latest driver posted is 3.0aAs dated June 15, 2006.
    2. Epson's instructions with the latest 2200 driver is to do a "Reset Printing System" first, then restart your Mac before installing the driver and adding the new print queue.
    3. When adding the printer with the Printer Setup Utility, make sure you're adding the Stylus Photo 2200 that appears under the Epson USB or Epson FireWire category depending on whether the 2200 is connected to your iMac with FireWire or USB. Note that unlike the old PPC 2200 driver which has separate "printers" for Borderless and Minimize Margins, Roll Paper and Sheetfeed, the new driver installs only one printer. Roll paper and borderless printing options are now handled in the Page Setup dialog like the R-series printer drivers. (Unfortunately, this causes incompatibilities in a mixed PPC and Intel printer sharing environment).
    4. Run the Epson Printer Utility and use it to check printer status and do a nozzle check. This will help check if the Mac is communicating with the printer.
    Now you can start making your test prints. Most likely, you'll be using the Print Settings and Color Management options in the Print dialog frequently. If the prints are coming out halfway decent or better, then you can be quite certain that the printing system is set up properly and now you can worry about the ICC profiles and color management.
    Also, don't forget to download the better profiles for the 2200 from support.epson.com.
    And, if you're managing color in Photoshop, turn OFF Color Management in the Print dialog and vice-versa. Otherwise, you're managing color twice!

  • Lenovo T420 (4236) widi error : this platform incompatible with Intel Widi

    Hi There, I am using Lenovo 420 - 4236 and while installing intel widi getting following message " This platform is not compatible with Intel widi or the application is in use" I have checked the compatibility and driver version it is latest one. Kindly help to fix this. Under display adapter it shows Intel HD graphics family and NVDIA nvs 4200M, do i need to disable NVDIA ? Ganesh

    Go to http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect and let the automated plugin examine your system. Download all the recommended files. The installation order is critical. Display first. WiFi second, WiDi third. Do not mix and match Intel and Lenovo drivers. Good luck.

  • Possible to use both PowerPC and Intel-based systems together with Qmaster?

    Hello,
    New to the Qmaster setup, I was wondering if it was possible to set up a Qmaster cluster mixing PowerPC and Intel-based systems. If it is possible, what version of Qmaster would support this type of cluster?

    While it can work, note that if there is huge difference is processing speed, the PPC machine can actually slow down the process as everything waits for it to finish it's instance and copy it back.
    It's worth a try but keep an eye on how the various computers perform.
    Have fun.

  • I'm getting the kernal panic screen when I put in DVD

    My iMac G5, 2 GB has been slow, and occasionally getting the "restart your computer" screen. I ran the Apple Hardware Test on it twice. It passed both times, so I decided it must be software. I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS. Now I'm getting the Kernal Panic screen just as the computer recognizes the disk and is about to launch the installer. I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?
    What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?

    Your title is a little confusing; are you getting the message ONLY when you put a DVD in, or does it also happen when starting the computer up?
    If it's the DVD, is it the OS DVD? Are you sure you are using a PPC DVD and not an Intel DVD? I recall the same panic screen on my own G5 1st gen when I mixed up my Intel DVD with my PPC DVD.
    The first line of your panic (panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac12.1") was very similar to mine, except mine had "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac8.2"

  • Disk Utility Unable to Repair External FireWire Hard Disk

    Hello all.
    This is the External FireWire Hard Disk that has been giving me problems for days, it is a Backup/Clone Disk of my sis's Mac mini Core Duo, and may explain why it was so hard and took so much pain to copy some of the data out, at times it failed to mount, and I manage to rescue some data after using Disk Warrior, but Disk Warrior was also unable to replace it with a new directory.
    Anyway, so I (was able to) mount the hard disk, and I was successful in erase and reformating it.
    But when I (try to) repair it with Disk Utility's First Aid, this report is what I get:
    (The usual 'Checking...' text lines, text in BOLD indicates RED colour text)
    Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
    Checking Catalog hierarchy
    Checking volume bitmap
    Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information
    The volume Untitled could not be repaired after 3 attempts
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
    1 volume could not be repaired
    Then a window dropped down from the top says:
    First Aid failed
    Disk Utility stopped repairing "Untitled" because the following error was encountered:
    The underlying task reported failure on exit
    (OK Button)
    I guess this hard disk is really a gone case?? I am quite OK just to replace it with a brand new one... maybe all the trouble I had in the beginning is because I may already have a faulty backup drive to begin with???
    Thanks and cheers

    Hi Kappy,
    I knew there was something about "not mixing" PPC and Intel versions of dealing with the external drive.
    The drive was originally prepared on an Intel Mac mini Core Duo. But it should also mount normally on a PPC mac as an external hard drive right?
    Here's the sequence of events:
    1. Tried to boot from the Back Up/Clone Drive of the Mac mini Core Duo, through my MacBook Core 2 Duo, but failed to boot up
    I had to shut down the MacBook (prolonged Bluescreen)
    2. When I reboot the MacBook, and tried to mount the ext drive as normal, nothing happens, I knew something was wrong
    3. Able to reach the vendor, use the Mac mini again to erase and reformat the drive, then check with DU, everything is OK
    Clone with SuperDuper
    After that check again with DU, not everything is alright, there are errors.
    4. Brought the drive home, try to mount on my iMac G5, nothing happens.
    I did a check on this forum, and the reply was that I should be able to use Disk Warrior 4 (Universal) on a PPC to fix an Intel-based ext drive. I was very specific and detail in my post/question
    5. So anyway, I have no other option, I ran Disk Warrior 4 from my PPC iMac G5 and scan the ext drive, trying to fix it.
    It reported the drive is too damaged to be replace with a new Directory, but gave me a Preview Mode. I use this to copy some data out.
    But not sure if the data is OK or not.
    6. After that, I was able to mount the drive in my iMac G5, so I just use DU and erase and reformat the drive, with Zero Data
    7. Ran DU again, and that's where I am now, at the very first post, getting error messages that I cannot fix the drive
    Thanks and cheers

  • ID CS3 printing woes - again!

    OK I'm about to rip out my last few strands of hair on this one.
    I am running OS 10.5.5 ID CS 3 5.03 on a MacBook Pro.
    In the past I have been able to print to a Konica Minolta BizHub 350 printer with out any problem. Nice quality print and everything just worked.
    Over the past few months more and more documents simply refuse to print. I have checked the print set up, installed the latest drivers for the printer and nothing prints. The print dialog comes up like it should, I see the page numbers count off as the file is prepared. I open the printer dialog box and watch the information being sent to the printer and wait, and wait, and wait. Nothing comes out of the printer.
    Though several with print issues like to wag their finger at the latest OS X update this problem predates that with me. If I was to point any fingers it would be at Adobe with their updates to InDesign.
    One more oddity I frequently have is ID almost crashes. The open windows disappear but ID still shows open in my dock. The only way I can get back to the document is to force quit then re launch ID
    My work around has been to export as a pdf and print from Acrobat (with the reduced print area)
    Any yes, I have launched all applications including my other Adobe apps on my machine and printed to this printer without any problem.
    Can we expect more of this nonsense from ID CS 4 when it comes out?
    Regards,

    Not sure if you're still checking this posting, but we're in a similar bind now with CS4.
    We have a mixed environment of Intel Machines and G5s, all running CS4 and OSX 10.5.8. We used to print to a CREO Rip hooked up to an Ikon Printer and it was swell. We now have a Konica Minolta BizHub Pro C5501 hooked up to a Fiery RIP (which is essentially the same machine as we had before, just newer) and all hell has broke lose.
    We've lost the ability to just pick a paper size and print. We have have to go through a very complicated set of menus and choose size in a bunch of settings to get the printer to print our work. A lot of the time it just refuses to output on 11x17 or 12x18. A lot of the times InDesign just hangs when printing and then crashes. Sometimes the files RIP then error out with no reason. Then they print just fine.
    My tech guy believes it's an issue with the Fiery. It seems that it's more of a CS4 issue to me after reading some of these posts.
    How are you making out now? You probably have CS4.

  • Can I connect the mini to an older G5?

    Can I connect the new iMac Mini to an older Power PC G5 (3.0) and make the mini the dominant hard drive?

    No you cannot mix PowerPC and Intel Macs in that manner.

  • Good news about Carbon Copy Cloner

    After reading a post from Mike Bombich at his Carbon Copy Cloner web site that he knew of no reason CCC wouldn't work under Rosetta on the new InteliMacs I decided to try cloning to an external FW400/USB2 Maxtor drive, and indeed he is correct!
    Bombich warns that CCC hasn't been thoroughly wrung out on Intel hardware, and that you can NOT mix clones: an Intel clone will NOT boot a PowerPC Mac, nor vice versa.
    The only real trick is to be certain to partition the clone drive in the new GUID Partition Scheme listed under Options in the Partition page of Disk Utility. From there CCC runs like it always has, and Bob's your Uncle.

    I recommend checking CCC's Help and the stickies at CCC General Tips http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=2. If you still have questions, post them to the CCC Troubleshooting forum at http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=3—Bombich Forums Moderator.

  • Initial thoughts on Aperture 2

    1. Interface buttons nicely grouped and overall cleaned up
    2. Tabs for projects, metadata, adjustments nice, but I cannot see a preference for "my set" of default adjustment tools: will have to look at plist
    3. Preferences pane much better
    Now the meat and two veg ....
    4. Adjustment sliders are very smooth and result in an easier to achieve balance for an image. That said, still have to use <Option> or key in zero to get a slider back to zero.
    5. Straighten, with or without crop is utter joy. Granted it should never have been the dog it was under 1.x, but kudos for fixing. Even works pretty fluidly at 100% zoom, though somewhat more hesitant than full screen. Tried 2 up with one image cropped and zoomed and straighten still worked well.
    6. RAW v2 looks slightly more saturated with slightly less noise by default vs. 1.1, and the additional sliders are useful. Overall (Canon 20D) 1.1 was a good RAW algorithm, so the differences are more subtle from v2 but welcome. Unsure I'll reprocess many, but the great news is that RAW reprocessing is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster.
    7. Recovery and Blackpoint work really well and make H'light/ Shadows somewhat less needful .... so why are they there by default? Again, I really wanted "My Adjustment Tools" preset.
    8. No curves. C'mon Aperture team.
    9. Lift/stamp of auto-exposure copies the actual values, not the instruction. Still useless therefore as a batch concept.
    10. Retouch/patch/clone work pretty fluidly. Some hesitancy on retouch, but not a problem. Good news is that it appears better than CS3 at determining edges and texture, meaning a simple wipe across a complex background doesn't pick up invalid pixels and retains underlying detail. Pretty darn impressive. Also, didn 't notice any slow-down after applying 20 retouches and then trying to straighten (a killer in v1.x). Fabulous!
    11. Haven't tried export yet to see whether it's faster or whether it actually outputs the full image (the missing quadrants bug in jpeg's esp). But you can work alongside exports now and responsiveness is v.good.
    12. All above working alongside Thumbnail generation (~4,500) and Previews (~4,500). The good news is that they took a back seat to editing and adjustments and no longer compromised performance.
    13. Importing and editing images in parallel is amazingly good. Hardly noticed any lag due to disk I/O etc.
    So, I couldn't end on 13, could I?
    14. Overall it is a very very good first impression. No bug or crash or slowdown, SBOD etc. after 1 hrs use. Impressive.

    I would like to add one new entry into this mix.  The Intel Clarksfield new i7 series, while not the complete full power of the current i7 chips this new addition to the i7 family will be a mobile processor and it is supposed to be announced on Sept 23 giving laptops a new quad core lease on life.
    "Quad core in future laptops
    The new mobile platform from Intel code-named Calpella will supposedly be launced on September the 23rd. The Calpella platform is designed for the quad core Clarksfield processors, which feature the Core i7 line-up. The Calpella platform is designed for high-end laptops and will open up for mass uasage of quad core CPUs in mobile computers. For now there will be only 3 Core i7 mobile CPUs:
    * Core i7-720QM       1.60 GHz       256 kb L2 cache per core       6 Mb unified L3 cache       45W TDP
    * Core i7-820QM       1.73 GHz       256 kb L2 cache       8 Mb unified L3 cache       45W TDP
    * Core i7-920XM       2.00 GHz       256 kb L2 cache       8 Mb unified L3 cache       55W TDP
    All three CPUs come in 989-pin mPGA packaging and with an integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. They all support HyperThreading so 8 processes can be run simultaniously. Because of the memory controller the Clarksfield CPUs will use a little more power than existing Core 2 Quad mobile CPUs, but overall system power usage is expected to be about the same".
    "Taking a performance improvement over existing mobile processors, Intel Core i7 720QM evaluated at $ 364, 820QM - at $ 546 and 920XM - at $ 1054, the source"

  • Array as Shared Memory - performance bottleneck

    Array as shared memory - performance bottleneck
    Hello,
    currently I work on a multi-threaded application, where many threads work on shared memory.
    I wondering why the application doesn't become faster by using many threads (I have i7 machine).
    Here is an example for initialization in single thread:
              final int arrayLength = (int)1e7;
              final int threadNumber = Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors();
              long startTime;
               * init array in single thread
              Integer[] a1 = new Integer[arrayLength];
              startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
              for(int i=0; i<arrayLength; i++){
                   a1[i] = i;
              System.out.println("single thread=" + (System.currentTimeMillis()-startTime));and here initialization with many threads:
               * init array in many threads
              final Integer[] a3 = new Integer[arrayLength];
              List<Thread> threadList = new ArrayList<Thread>();
              for(int i=0; i<threadNumber; i++){
                   final int iF = i;
                   Thread t = new Thread(new Runnable(){
                        @Override
                        public void run() {
                             int end = (iF+1)*offset;
                             if(iF==(threadNumber-1))
                                  end = a3.length;
                             for(int i=iF*offset; i<end; i++){
                                  a3[i] = i;
                   threadList.add(t);
              startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
              for(Thread t:threadList)
                   t.start();
              for(Thread t:threadList)
                   t.join();After execution it looks like this:
    single thread=2372
    many threads List=3760I have i7 4GB RAM
    System + Parameters:
    JVM-64bit JDK1.6.0_14
    -Xmx3g
    Why the executing of one thread is faster as executing of many threads?
    As you can see I didn't use any synchronization.
    Maybe I have to configure JVM in some way to gain wished performance (I expected the performance gain on i7 x8 times) ?

    Hello,
    I'm from [happy-guys|http://www.happy-guys.com] , and we developed new sorting-algorithm to sort an array on the multi-core machine.
    But after the algorithm was implemented it was a little-bit slower as standard sorting-algorithm from JDK (Array.sort(...)). After searching for the reason, I created performance tests which shows that the arrays in Java don't allow to access them by many threads at the same time.
    The bad news is: different threads slowdown each-other even if they use different array-objects.
    I believe all array-objects are natively managed by a global manager in JVM, thus this manager builds a global-lock for all threads.
    Only one thread can access any array at the same time!
    I used:
    Software:
    1)Windows Vista 64bit,
    2) java version "1.6.0_14"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)
    Hardware:
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2,67GHz 2,79 GHz, 6G RAM

  • External hard drive VS. wireless Time Capsule

    Are there any benefits of plugging in an external drive to my mac VS. using Time Capsule for backups? I'm guessing speed? Anything else?
    Thanks.

    If you have more than one Mac in the house, TC has the advantage of not requiring sneaker-netting the external drive. (Though I have some questions about mixing PPC and Intel based Macs on one TC.)
    If your one Mac is a notebook there could be a definite advantage if your habits are similar to mine. Typically, the only time my MacBook (or my wife's) is on a desk where it could conveniently be connected to an external drive is at work. At home, we mostly park our 'Book on our laps in the den.
    But I'll show some luddite tendency here and admit that I'm not sure I'd trust TC to restore my data until quite a few other 'bleeding edge' folk work out the bugs for me. I've finally discovered that there's a limit to how far out on the edge I'm willing to go.

  • Reducing PowerPC Processes on MBP

    Perhaps this is an incredibly stupid question, in which case I beg your forgiveness. But I've just run activity monitor and noticed that I'm running 8 different processes that appear to not be intel-native on my MBP. I assume that this is slowing things down, so I'm hoping that someone can tell me how to reduce that number. The processes that are running are:
    ScanNotification (which I assume is for my Epson all-in-one, for which I've already downloaded and installed a universal binary driver), Norton Quickmenu (I've got the universal binary of Norton Anti-Virus, of which this I assume is a part), Microsoft AU Daemon (eh, what do you expect, it's Microsoft), EPSON Scanner Monitor (again, I'm suppposed to have the universal binary), SymSecondaryLaunch (?), HP Communications (I've got a networked HP printer set up, but I'm running (I think) only drivers that came preinstalled on my mac for it), translate (I've got no idea what this is) and TWAINBridge. I'll post a picture of the activity monitor display if I can figure out how to do so, but in the meantime can anyone tell me how to reduce any of these? Thanks!

    Rosetta (the technology that enables PowerPC applications to run on an Intel processor) has two efficiency conseuqences: 1) Extra RAM used for the translation process; 2) Speed cost of translated PowerPC code execution.
    For large or computationally expensive applications (video or graphics processing, e.g.) the slow-down can be considerable. For large applications the RAM overhead can be a problem.
    Supposedly 100% of Apple's own software is Universal (Intel on Intel boxes, PowerPC on those systems), but there's quite a bit of third-party stuff that has yet to be "Universalized".
    Unless these applications are actually causing you problems, (most likely because they fit into one or both of the aforementioned categories) there's no reason for concern that there are some PowerPC applications running on your system.
    Also, I've yet to see any reports of a Universal application running as PowerPC unless you've specifically told the system to do that. If you're concerned, find the icon for the application in question (in the Finder) and issue the Get Info command for it. If it's a Universal application, it will say so and furthermore there will be a "Open using Rosetta" check-box. If that is checked, then (guess what), the system will run that application in its PowerPC form. This can be necessary if there are plug-ins or extensions of some sort that have not yet been converted to Universal form, since Rosetta cannot mix PowerPC with Intel in the same application.
    If I were you and nothing is malfunctioning, I'd leave well enough alone. As the vendors of the software in question produce updates, they'll make them Universal and the number of PowerPC processes running on your sytem will decrease.
