Mixing graphics cards
I ordered a Mac Pro with the Radion card. But I'm thinking that I might want to run Final Cut Pro with a 2-monitor setup and use my 50" LCD as a client monitor (3rd monitor). So if I wanted the client monitor to run off DVI, would I have to buy another Radion card, or can I go with a cheaper nVidia?
(I can also run it through a Canopus ADVC via firewire, but obviously DVI would be nicer.)
I don't know why mixing cards wouldn't work, but in
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWTechVideo/Articles/Video_implementation.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40003994> it says:
"Note: The Mac Pro does not simultaneously support an ATI graphics card and an Nvidia graphics card."
Based on careful reading of the above document and
<http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pci_implementation.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40003937>,
it may be possible to install two ATI Radeon X1900 XT cards, one in slot 1, and one in slot 2 (also covering slot 3). The PCI bus would be set to x8 x8 x1 x8.
The configuration would meet all the cooling and power restrictions. There are auxiliary power connectors for both slots 1 and 2.
This would give you four displays (all could be up to 30") with independent resolution and rotation.
It is not a standard configuration, so you would order the Mac Pro with one ATI Radeon X1900 XT and order the second as an add-on
<http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/6.RSLID?mco= 220D662A&nplm=MA631Z%2FA>. Note where it says:
"System Requirements:
Mac Pro with available double-wide PCI Express slot or two standard slots". They wouldn't say that if it was only allowed in slot 1 (the only double-wide slot).
There would still be one empty slot, x8, with 36 watts available.

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a Mac pro for visual effects & graphics work.
My question is quite simple, what are the benifits of having to graphic cards in a Mac Pro,
For instance, i am thinking of putting in a Quadro 4000 with a 5870 in my mac pro.
now is it possible for me to set say the ATI 5870 for powering my display and my Quadro 4000 for graphic processing tasks such as rendering stuff, and so on and so forth.
Any thouights will be great.
Cheers.
AniYou need to find a way to add 3rd aux power connector.
Mac Pro only comes with a mere 2 6-pin connectors, not a lot of power.
Apple has had multiple problems with Nvidia drivers, with support, with say using two 4000s together, which sounds nice and makes more sense (and especially if one wants to run Windows at all where mixing ATI and Nvidia use to be against all the rules, now it seems like it is an Apple issue).
Yes, there can be processing improvements, Adobe Mercury Engine for one, CUDA still has advantage over ATI-Apple OpenCL. -
Graphics card upgrade question on the Satellite P10-802
Hoping someone out there may be able to offer some advice.
I'm now finding I probably need to upgrade this system a little. Adding memory looks straight forward but was also interested in upgrading the graphics card. Does anyone know if this is possible? Currently it has the ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 with 64MB of memory. If it is not possible to change the card is it possible instead to increase the memory on the card itself?
Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice to offer!
Cheers
Message was edited by: liamflanNo, something like that is definitely not possible.
Please do not mix the notebook technology with the simple desktop PC.
You cannot upgrade the notebook graphic card and you cannot increase this graphic card memory.

Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
Mac OSX version 10.6.8
Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
Thanks in advanceThank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem. -
Is it possible to add a graphics card to my laptop?
I have a Hp Pavilion Dm4 with built in hd graphics since its absolutly afaule I wish to add a graphics card into the computer. I will list all the specs here so you guys know what im using.

Graphics is built into the motherboard.
Can only upgrade with new motherboard.
Only a few laptops have graphics cards that can be up graded. "Like Alienware"
Good luck.

Hi. After installing the latest Mac OS update (10.6.8), I can no longer boot my 5,1 Mac Pro into its Mac OS partition. An undefined display (and graphics card) now seems to be used as default, rather than the supported display/hardware, so I cannot interact with the user interface. I simply have an inoperable blue screen on the correct display. I have 2 graphics cards in my Mac Pro: a supported GT120 (solely for the purpose of booting/using Mac OS), and an unsupported HD6970 (used extensively for Windows 7 3D gaming, in Slot 1). Until this latest OS release, I could successfully boot and use my computer in both Mac OS and Windows environments. I encountered other problems because of this mixed graphics environment, like an inability to put the system to sleep without having the Mac Pro PCI fan unnecessarily ramp up to full speed after waking - but it would always work correctly when first booted. (I have contacted Apple Support about this sleep issue, but they do not support my configuration.) Does any boot command exist to force the use of the supported graphics card? Or, do kext files exist to enable the Mac OS to at least recognize (not use) the 6970 card? With the 6970 removed, I have no problems booting the Mac OS, but I do NOT want to remove my hardware card every time I want to shift to the Mac OS. Do anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for the suggestions.
First, I cannot swap graphic cards in PCI slots, because the 6970 only operates correctly in slot 1 (the high-speed graphics slot). I may have to revert to the prior OS release, but what about next month, with Lion?
I am familiar with Netkas.org (I will probably try it or Groths.org next, thanks). One of my previous graphics cards was a flashed 4970. I do not have access to the prelease Lion kext files that he suggests using. Full flash support does not appear to yet exist for the 6970, much less the HD 6990 or GTX 590 that it appears I may need next.
Ideally, the Mac Pro firmware should ignore any attempted bus communication with an unrecognized PCI card. Currently, it appears that the unsupported 6970 can cause boot or run-time problems (I also have occasional freezes during Mac OS hardware interaction like writing a file to disk). Note that I have never had any problems arising from my unsupported Windows 5.1 PCI sound card, however. -
Can I install a graphics card on Satellite M70?
I have got a Toshiba Satellite M70-394 (psm70e). I have seen that I have a pcie slot in my system through a hardware identifier program. Is it possible that I can install a graphics card through the back if I unscrew the back or get a professional to do it?
Hi!
> an express card slot.
Do you know what an express card slot is?
I think you are mixing something
The express card slot is designed for express cards. Its similar to PCMCIA cards.
You will not find a graphic card that is designed for the express card slot. For these slot you can buy USB extension cards for example.
Check your user manual!!!
There you will find more details about this slot.

Reinstall a MacBook Pro with a dead graphics card?
I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 Inch. Its graphics card died. I want to do a clean install of OS X Mavericks. However, if I do this, screen sharing will go off, and I will be blind during the installation. How can I do a clean install?
If I connnect the hard drive externally, then it will get the wrong drivers during the installation, if I do it via Target Disk Mode, same thing.
I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 15 Inch. I know the drivers will be closer on this, but will they be the exact same?
Is voiceover during the installation good enough to navigate blindly? If it is, I could just go blind, and once its set up use voiceover to turn screen sharing on. I know voiceover will suffice once it is up and running to get screen sharing on. (I did it that way when the graphics card went out initially)
Is voiceover during the installation good enough to navigate blindly?
I am going to use this as a server, and I want to make absolutely sure that everything that I didn't put on is off.
It is already backed up.I purchased my MacBook Pro that way last year (180 days same as cash). They were pretty slow approving the card even though I have good credit. I payed very close attention to the dates and made sure all was paid off before the end of the 180 days and had no issues. I was also careful about not charging anything else to the card until I paid off the MBP, gets a lot harder to understand and control what they consider the promotional amount paid when you start mixing in other purchases and payments for those.
For me it worked out great, Almost 6 months to pay is better than 1 big hit. -
Mac Pro 3, 1 Upgrading Graphics Card Help!
Hello to all and I first apoligize before hand incase there is a similar post.
I am currently in the mix of getting myself a new graphics card and upgrading the RAM I have on my early 2008 (3, 1) Mac Pro and dont know what I am looking at.
My current specs are as follows:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor: 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
Software: OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I am currently having issues with not waking up from sleep and the performace with the graphics card rendering and fps in games are very poor. Tired of having all of my video settings on low.
I play League of Legands, Dota 2, Portals, CounterStrike . . . etc. There are a lot of different options now for cards than ever before but I am looking to stay within a budget. For the graphics card I am not looking to spend over $400 and would love to find something even cheaper than that. I have researched many of the forms within discussions.apple, apple insider and as well have talked to a senior advisior with apple. She recomended the Nvidia Quadro FX 5600.
I specificly want something at or above 1.0 GB VRAM to handle my 2 Displays which are:
HP 2711:
Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
DELL 2405FPW:
Resolution: 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
If anyone can point me in the right direction as to what to buy for a graphics card because I am not that well educated in that side of the computer. I can handle upgrading the RAM by myself but would also like a little push.
Any help/response would be great! The "regular" Apple Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI adapter (is not an ACTIVE adapter) is US$29. for displays up to 1920 wide.
Third party Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI adapter ACTIVE can be had for about US$35 from Amazon or NewEgg. for displays up to 1920 wide.
http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-006B-DisplayPort-Single-Link-Certified/dp/B00 4071ZXA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1362369627&sr=8-4&keywords=ACTIVE+Mini+Displaypor t+DVI
The Apple Mini Displayport to DUAL-Link DVI ACTIVE Adapter with additional power from an attached USB cord is US$100. required for for wide displays. -
Hi Guys,
I have a PXIe system, currently running in RT. Now, there is a requirement for the PXIe system to have up to graphic output to control some instruments. I came across these cPCI cards:
1. http://ekf.de/s/sv1/sv1.html
2. http://ekf.de/c/cgxa/cv2/cv2.html
Based from my understanding, SV1 is a card that acts as a garphic card for the system as you can insert an AMD card somewhere on the card. CV2 card, on the other hand, is just as an extended display output. I've emailed the OEM, and their feedback are as follows:
"For CV2, VGA resources have to be released by the BIOS, we have the experience already that NI CPU boards are not able to release resources for our VGA board. Anyway, our hardware contains standard Intel hardware same as a PC. And we have customers, using cPCI serial http://ekf.de/s/sc1/sc1.html with a hybrid backplane for a PXIe DSP board and mixing with cPCI serial peripheral boards. This would be the right Graphics board: http://ekf.de/s/sv1/sv1.html"
So, I'm not sure whether it can be used or not. If it is possible to use one of these two cards with a NI PXIe system, I'm also planning to convert my RT system to Hypervisor. The Windows portion is specifically meant to handle these cards while the rest of the program and processing resource still maintain in the RT system. Will this work?
I'm attaching the datasheets for these two cards, for your reference. Any advice or feedback?

If its possible to connect such card to the notebook, then I dont see any serious reasons why you shouldnt be able to use it.
But as far as I know this external card can be used only with the external display (monitor) because the internal notebooks display is already taken by internal graphic card. -
i am thinking of purchasing a mac pro with the ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card but was also wandering could i add an additional Nvidia GT120 at a later date so that i can hook up 3 monitors??
is this possible or can you only do it if you use multiple GT120's?well at first i was just going to hook it up to the 19 inch Hp monitor until i get enough and then yes i was thinking of getting a 24 inch apple monitor, with the possibility of hooking 2 up eventually and possibly a 27 inch dell as well, hence why i would need the second graphics card.
Im going to be using the mac pro mainly for audio recording and editing so the dell would be used as the main monitor and then the 24 inchers for the mixer window and plug in effects. (as well as because they look sweet lol) -
Does an upgraded graphics card help stability within FCP?
I have been having some issues, working on a documentary about two hours long shot on Sony EX-1. The timeline contains a mix of footage (24 1080p, 30 1080p, 24 720p, 30 720p) all rendered to 30fps ProRes 422. No effects at this point, mostly just the transcoding during render.
It crashed when I export through compressor to DVD, and will not render the whole project without crashing. Sometimes, when I select just a portion of the project to render, within the main timeline, once it is done renedering that section, it looses the rest of the render for the entire project.
All this points me to some hardware issues, probably ram, but i have been advised to purchase a high end graphics card to carry the burden of exporting. (currently using the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600) As far as I have known, a graphics card holds no bearing on this process. I know a new graphics card helps a lot in Motion, AE and such, but I am only concerned about editing in FCP at this point.
Thanks for any thoughts you may have. Are you mixing formats and resolutions in the timeline? If so, you might consider converting all the the same format before editing.
Try exporting a selfcontained quicktime and then bringing that quicktime into compressor.
Oh yeah, make sure you don't have any cmyk graphics.

Graphics card melted in oven.
Hello i have a question my dead HD5870 was dead and i decided to try to bake it in the oven however accidently i left it in to long and the card was melted and there was smoke everywhere does anyone know what chemicals are in these graphics card and can i get any health issues because of the toxics that are released however there was a window open in my apartment kitchen so there was fresh air coming in. i feel fine and don't have any health issues right now.
chokes = plastic, ceramics, Ferrite and copper
typical diodes = Germanium, Silicon, Boron
Resistors = Ceramics, steel, copper
Transistors = Silicon , Ceramics
solid state capacitor = aluminium, copper, Rubber
Dialetric capacitor = Ceramic beeds soked in a salt solution , rubber, alluminium , paper, copper
main GPU core = Ceramic , Copper , Gold , silicon
Most other componants are a mixture of the above
the plastic of the enclosure is Hydrocarbon and if it burns like yours has that is toxic and may cause health problems and the coating on the PCB is a mix of plastics too. everything else is not that toxic (there is 0 mercury in them as that is a regulated material and has to be disclosed on the product as a warning of "this product contains mercury")
the pain on your chest was probably a acidic reaction to the hydrocarbon materials burning and mixing with the fluid in your airways leading to mild internal chemical burns (Burning Plastic does that especially the thermal resistant type like is used).
just have your doctor check you out for any respritory issues as that the most likely thing here. long term effects should be near negligable at best! -
What's the Best LCD (20"/ larger) and best Graphic Card choice /G4 733DA?
I know very little about the great choices for flat panel displays and also graphics cards on a Mac G4 733DA
So any recommendations would be sincerely appreciated.
What's a good LCD (20"/ larger) and the best Graphic Card choice for a G4 733DA? A friend recommended an ATI 9800 Pro (Mac Edition) Is this a good choice?
My current G4 733 Digital Audio has a standard VGA port as well as an ADC port.
Will I need to upgrade the existing graphics card if I’m looking to view wide screen?
Here's what i currently have on my g4 for a graphics card:
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX:
Chipset Model: GeForce2 MX
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 32 MB
Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0110
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 1045F
Displays:
VGA Display:
Resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Not Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Lastly, is 1080p even possible on this mac system provided I perform the above upgrades to say an ATI 9800 Pro (Mac edition)? Or will this also require a major dual processor CPU upgrade?
SDMacuserThe ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is the best card you can put in a G4 Power Mac. As for supporting HD, I believe its a mix between CPU and GPU, based on your system. The Radeon 9800 should support HD, and any HD supporting LCD. Price, wise, for a HD ready screen I'd say the a high quality Dell LCD would be good (it uses the same panel as the Apple 20" LCD) but costs less. You should not have to upgrade your CPU, although it would not hurt to look into it.

Can I install a graphics card on my HP Envy 23-d030?
I bought the HP Envy 23 a couple months ago but only until recently have I tried gaming on it. I quickly realized that the integreted graphics were not sufficient to play games like Battlefield 3 properly, even at their lowest graphical settings. So I was wondering if there is anyway to intall a better graphics card on this All-In-One. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have the same problem i need to upgrade my video card? this is what i got ------------------
