Mixing RAM sizes and issues

I'm having an issue with my late 2012 iMac 27 inch. It came with 8GB stock RAM installed on the 1st and 3rd slots (lookin from bottom to top). The 2nd and 4th were empty. I bought a Crucial 16GB RAM (http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-204-Pin-Modules-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTB JFW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365482251&sr=8-1). I installed the new ones in 2nd and 4th slots. Much to my surprise, when I switched on the machine and checked "About my Mac", it only showed 16B 1600Mhz RAM instead of 24GB RAM and after a few seconds, the system hung. I restarted the machine and I heard several beep sounds and the system never turned on. I checked th slots and all were seated OK. On switching again, I heard the same beeps. I switched off the machine completely, waited for a few seconds and tried again and then all was normal. The system was showing 24GB RAM and I was able to use my system for couple of hours and all was OK.
I have couple of questions:
1. What's going on here?. Is it a bad RAM that I need to worry about?. I still have ample time to order a new set of RAM and return the ones I have now.
2. Why the system acted up and now it is OK even though I didn't change anything?
3. Is the seating correct?. What is the best order to get maximum performance?. I intend to remove a 4GB RAM and keep it at 20GB RAM. If that's the case, what should be the order of arrangement?
4. Is there any cause of concern that my system is acting up?. I'm well within my 14 day return period and I can go for a exchange if you guys feel that way.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Sounds like maybe the modules are not firmly seated in the slots.
Try re-seating them, only this time push real hard on each module with both thumbs to ensure that than are firmly seated in the slots.
see > iMac: How to remove or install memory
Then if the new RAM is not working, return it and buy directly from > Crucial.com or > OWC macsales.com

  • Mixing ram SIZES in Late 2013 i7 27" iMac

Just assume all ram sticks are the same specs.......
    Can I mix ram SIZES in Late 2013 i7 27" iMac? I.E. : two - 4 GB and two - 8 GB?

You should try to balance RAM out as equally as possible between available slots.
    For example, 2 4 4 4,  2 2 4 4,  2 2 2 4,  but not 2,4,8,0.   And where you only have two slots, 2 2,  2 4,  4 4,  and so on.

  • Mixing ram sizes

    Hello,
I recently purchased a macbook pro i7 late 2011 edition. It currently has 4GB of ram(2x2GB). I am wondering if it is possible to purchase a single 8GB(1x8GB) stick of ram and trade out one of the old 2GB sticks in order to have a total of 10GB of ram. I am aware 16GB ram kits are available but they are currently too expensive for me so atleast this way I could purchase one stick of 8GB for now and then purchase another down the road.
8GB of ram is not enough for me. So my question is if whether or not I can mix ram sticks. Please only respond if you know for a fact and why, I don't appreciate people making guesses.
    Thank you!

No one can answer your question with certainty. Some people mix different RAM brands and sizes and even speeds, and don't have any trouble. Others try it and have nothing BUT trouble. No two Macs or Mac users are alike in all respects, so there's no knowing why it works for one and not for another. It's a safer bet to use exactly matched pairs, but you might be fine with whatever mismatched modules you choose. If you buy from a vendor who offers a lifetime warranty, you'll probably be able to return anything that doesn't work out for you. But you can't eliminate the chance of getting bad RAM no matter what you buy, and you can't be sure that even a good module will behave perfectly when paired with a module that you have now.
There are some vendors who offer RAM modules in pairs from one manufacturer but in unmatched sizes, and warrant them to work properly together. You may want to consider buying a 4GB and an 8GB module from such a vendor, adding a small amount in cost but giving you 12GB and a solid warranty. Here's one dependable source:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM
Note that the extra 4GB only costs $15 more than a single 8GB module.

  • [Intel] Mixing different size and brands of memory. MSI 6507 Motherboard.

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is ok to mix, firstly different size ram and secondly - different brands. I am currently using a 1x PC2100 512mb stick and 1x PC2100 256mb stick (Different Brands) and have never had any problems. However I am looking to replace the 256 stick with either another 512 or 1g, when searching on the net most of the advice is not to mix brands and always use pairs rather than different size sticks?
    I have a MSI 6507 MB
    Thanks

    Hi
Using matched pairs is still the best way to go with memory but that doesn't mean that having different brands won't work.  It is a crap shoot when mixing different sticks of memory.  Sometimes it works fine but most of the time it causes problems.

    1.
The device with larger ram can open more applications compared to the device with less ram.
    2.
If processor has higher clock rate, the faster the app or game will execute.
High speed processor with low ram can execute apps faster than low speed processor with high ram.
Low speed processor with high ram can run many apps but execute apps slower.
    Hope you got the idea.

  • Mixing memory sizes - any issues?

Have a 975x PUE with 2Gb Corsair memory in two memory slots. Consider installing 2*2Gb in the remaining slots i.e total 6Gb (Yes - I know you need to run a 64-bit OS to address this amount of memory). Is there any known problem? Plan to use same manufacturer and type of memory.

I've ran many boards over the years and have not one issue other than running memory made for overclocking with say value ram.  The overclocking memory just would run slow enough for the system and ended up dumping the value memory.  I see you currently have Corsair memory and if you stick in the same series and the same CAS range you may even be able to still overclock quite a bit if your lucky.  Unfortunately, you can't set your memory timings for each stick, it's a one speed for all four.  Just remember that they will only run as your slowest stick will allow.  I see yours are running at 4-4-4-12 and a lot of the 2 x 2gb sets are running those speeds lately.
    Good luck
    -=Mark=-
also, you can get different brands to work together, just make sure both companies are using the same chip manufacturers for best results.

  • Mixing Ram Sizes in Triple-Channel

I would like to install 10 GB of RAM in the following configuration on my 2009 Mac Pro (flashed to 5,1):
    Slot 1:  4GB
    Slot 2:  4GB
    Slot 3:  2GB
All 3 dimms are Apple OEM Hynix brand.  All are 1333MHz.
Will this arrangement take advantage of the triple-channel capability?  I'd test myself, but don't yet have all the RAM in my hands.

Triple channel means that the processor can read and write 3 DIMMs at the same time. So if you don't populate in sets of 3, you lose one third of the bandwidth for each missing DIMM. Doing that makes no sense. It also while possible to measure, makes little difference. Having a bit more than you think is enough, enough for the system and apps to cache what would otherwise require a trip to and disk access though does.
Which is also why the very low latency, near zero seeks, 90,000 I/O's per second - and 1000MB/sec read/write (blade type PCIe-SSD) help a system so much more even after there is "enough" memory today.
As to what amount and what apps, and $budget$ to determine what upgrades - and upgrades once you get an idea what can be done is rather hard to resist as you can make a huge difference sometimes for $100 here and there.

  • Maximum hdd size and ram?

hi, I have the emac from 2002, the "P69" I believe it's also referred to as. It's the one with the 700 MHz processor.
    1) I read that there are two ram slots and the maximum useable ram on the computer is 1GB. So if that's true, please confirm it or let me know if it's not.
    2) So my main question is, what's the biggest HDD I can install in this machine? I know with my Power Mac G4 it had a limitation on what the internal drive could be, so I'd like to know what I'm restricted to.
    3) Are there any other upgrades I should consider?
    Thanks in advance

I buy all my Mac RAM (we have ~14 Macs in the family including two eMacs) from only two on-line vendors:
    Data Memory Systems
    and
    Other World Computing
I'm pretty sure OWC ships to Canada. Don't know about DMS. That info should be on their web sites.
Basically you want Mac PC133 RAM even though the 1Gen eMacs have a 100mHz bus. Those eMacs need low-density RAM--hi-density PC RAM will either show up as half its rated size or as not there. Most computer/electronic superstore employees are so PC-centric that they seem oblivious to this basic but important fact. The online stores know you have a Mac and will get you the right RAM if you use their RAM finders
Location not withstanding, I tend to steer people with little to modest Mac experience to the first vendor because their web RAM finder is clearer and easier to use. Prices are generally similar between the two but you may find OWC is cheaper on certain part numbers. If shipping time is an issue, OWC gets stuff to Idaho faster
Many people recommend Crucial but I have found minor glitches in their Mac RAM information that makes me just a little nervous. I think Crucial better serves more experienced Mac users who have other resources for finding the exact RAM specs of their machine.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

Well done to the Air team for the good work done so far, not easy keeping up with Apple on IOS8  at the moment...

I am having simliar issue where I can get the iphone 6 launch image to work but not the iphone 6+ when using [email protected], 2208x1242.  Also the stage.fullScreenWidth/Height give 1472x828, which is 2/3 the expected dimensions or 736x414 at scale factor 2, not 3.  I hope adobe fixes this soon or we won't be able to launch new games with Apple as it is a requirement to have your apps Iphone 6/6+ optimized.  If this isn't fixed soon were pretty much forced to abandon adobe and move onto another software solution that will allow us to build for Apple.

  • Lumia 720 and RAM size

    Dear All;
I was quite happy when I heared about Lumia 720 which was matching my requirement in terms of dimentions, weight and battery, but it was a shock for me to know the RAM is only 512??!!!!!!
I'm concerned about the performance and the future support for WP8. Will such small RAM be sufficient for the phone to perform without any lags??? ant what about the future support for WP8 as microsoft stated very clearly in their website that some apps and fetures will require 1 GB RAM, see link below (end of the page)
    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-GB/how-to/wp8/start/whats-new-in-windows-phone
    Regards

Well, it's good to see you are still here then.. That said, could you elaborate on what 'one of those' means and why you think that would suit you better? What we have now is 'Would having 512MB RAM be an issue' to which the answer basically is no, except you may not be able to use some of the more resource hungry apps like some games. It will not in any way prevent the phone from everyday use.
We would assume you refer to Android phones and in the same price range you'll get a decent mid range phone but not with a feature set the 720 offers. That said if you prefer that, that's perfectly fine and all the best with that, but so far it would seem you reason and decide based on specs alone which would IMO be not the best way to choose your weapon of choice.
