ML high cpu after switching between spaces

After reboot system will run perfectly until I swipe to another space at which point WindowServer starts consuming the majority of the CPU, reported as 600-700% on an 8 core system as reported by Actiivty Monitor. The only way to recover that I have found it to reboot and don't use spaces at all. Unfortunatly most of my apps are locked to a specific space on startup.
This problem started with the install of Mountain Lion and took a long time to narrow it down to the use of spaces. By default I use 4 spaces on boot.
Config:
MacPro4,1 2x2.93 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
20GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4870
     2 x 30" Cinema HD Displays
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
     2 x 24" Cinema HD Displays

Hi floridabrits,
Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article [[Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources]]? There is also some good information in [[High memory usage]].
Hopefully this helps!

  • Ctrl + numbers switch between spaces doesn't work in lion

After a fresh install of Lion I'veexperienced strange behavior in mission control. I copied all my apps, documents, settings, etc. from SL to Lion but I noticed something different in Lion. Before I changed spaces by using ctrl+number-keys but for some reasonthis doesn’t work in Lion for me. It does nothing. When I hold down ctrl anduse the arrow-key it scrolls to the next space with a smooth animation. Afterthis and still holding the ctrl-key and pressing a number-key (3 for instance)it does jump to that space with a faster animation. But after releasing thectrl-key and trying it again without any arrow keys involved it doesn’t work atall. Is there anyone hew is experiencing the same problem? Anyone with a possibleexplanation or a way to solve this issue? I’m wondering if this has somethingto do with the clean install because my father did an upgrade from SL to Lionand ctrl+number-keys to switch between spaces works fine for him.
    Thanks in advance,

Go to the Keyboard preference pane -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Mission Control and check to see if you have the ^ + number keys set.

  • Duet makes noise after switching between finder audio and Logic

    Hi
My Duet makes noise after switching between "finder audio" and "Logic", In other words i would play a mp3 in the finder and when returning to Logic all my audio sounds like the "lo-fi" RTAS free plug digidesign gives away now.
This is happening on a White *iMac 24"*
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.10f3
    MacOsx 10,5,7

Does this happen every single time? The same thing happens to me every once in a while. I just close Logic and Maestro and unplug the Duet. Then, in this order, plug in the Duet, wait for it to click, load Maestro, load Logic. Works every time.
Edit: It does only seem to happen when I switch from Logic and the audio output from the Duet to internal and then come back quickly. I don't think it's an issue with the Duet hardware itself.

  • Slower switching between Spaces

It seems Apple made the speed of switching between Spaces (with 4 fingers to the left/right) slower on edges. Now it's "landing" much slower than in Lion. It's rather frustrating.
I tried to find Terminal hacks to fix this but none of them worked for me.

Command defaults write com.apple.dock workspaces-edge-delay -float 0.1 doesn't work out.

  • Dbwr consuming high CPU after enabling DirectIO

    Hi,
DBWR is consuming high CPU. After enabling DirectIO on Solaris SPARC 10, dbwr is eating away almost 1 CPU on a v440 machine i.e. 19% throughout the day. Neither of "buffer busy waits" or "write complete waits" or "free buffer waits" are in the top 5 wait events, which, to me, means that there is no buffer contention.
What I understand is that after enabling DirectIO, it takes longer for the IO to complete because pre-DirectIO it would return from the file system cache whereas now it has to return from the disk (and I do see at the OS level that IO has become slow), but should that result in dbwr consuming more CPU?
Infact after enabling DirectIO, IO has become very slow which is another problem and as a result log file writes have also become slow which is a 3rd problem. btw, I am aware that if there were many FTS, then DirectIO can make the system slow but there are no FTS in my case. Also, that SGA should be increased after enabling DirectIO, which has also been done.
    Thanks

What I understand is that after enabling DirectIO, it takes longer for the IO to complete because pre-DirectIO it would return from the file system cache whereas now it has to return from the disk Incorrect. See directio for details.
Yes, removing the file system cache from the I/O layer for a device can reduce I/O performance if the caller does not perform its own caching. However, direct I/O will eliminate the system cache overheads (and associated CPU resources needed) from a caller (like Oracle) that implements its own sophisticated buffer cache.
Direct I/O should therefore increase Oracle I/O performance and decrease resource footprint as it eliminates the need for the kernel to maintain a cache for that device.
Infact after enabling DirectIO, IO has become very slow which is another problem and as a result log file writes have also become slow which is a 3rd problem. Direct I/O, as per the Sun docs, is an advisory call. It may not place that device in direct I/O modes. It may result in partial direct I/O. So you need to make sure exactly what happens and how successful (partial or complete) this setting was.
btw, I am aware that if there were many FTS, then DirectIO can make the system slow but there are no FTS in my case. FTS (multi block reads/large sequential reads) is slower? This is contrary to Sun's docs that state:
Large sequential I/O generally performs best with DIRECTIO_ON, except when a file is sparse or is being extended and is opened with O_SYNC or O_DSYNC.

  • FaceTime camera turns off when switching between spaces

I will have the Facetime app on, have a conversation with a person. I have Mail opened up full screen in another "space." When I switch to that space, the camera turns off. I have to go back to the "space" that FaceTime is in in order to turn the camera back on. Is there a way to keep the camera on all the time when switching between different spaces and the Dashboard?

Having the same problem - In Snow Leopard, when I was on a FaceTime chat with a friend, I was able to navigate away from the FaceTime and surf, check the calendar and other stuff without pausing my video feed. In LION, for whatever reason, FaceTime pauses itself whenever I navigate away from the app. It's as if the application is FORCING me to stay in the conversation when, sometimes, I use FaceTime for TALKING, not VIDEO CONFERENCING.

  • AcroRd32.exe Goes to High CPU After Reader is Closed

When I close Acrobat reader, the process AcroRd32.exe jumps up to high CPU usage, about 25% and stays there.  If there are several adobe reader windows open, this occurs upon closing the last reader window.  If I open reader again, then close, I get another stale AcroRd32.exe process and another +25% CPU usage, etc.  I have to kill the processes in Win7 task manager.
I've tried downgrading from version 11 to version 10, with no success.  I've tried suggestions from this forum and other sites, such as
edit->preferences->general, uncheck "show me messages...", check "don't show me messages..."
edit->preferences->internet, uncheck "allow fast web viewing", uncheck "allow speculative downloading..."
    But no luck.  Still happening.
It hasn't always been this way.  I suspect some interaction with a windows or browser update within the past month or so.
This is really broken and really annoying.  Thank you!

I have a customer with the same issue.  I've done all the standard fixes, like disable protected mode, stop messages, etc.  This is on a Citrix XenApp 6.5 server and the particular workstation is shared by many people using a common log on.  The users are all using Reader XI to view AutoCAD 2004 and SolidWorks 2014 drawings that have been printed to PDF.
Anybody have any ideas because I'm out.

For the good portion of this afternoon into this evening, I've been running at about 80%+ CPU utilization with MRT being the offender based on watching 'top' and Activity Monitor.   Anyone else seeing something similar?

Here's a tiny bit more info from system.log (in bold):

I have run a full repair on disk permissions but it hasn't resolved this issue.   SMJobRemove seems to be an SDK function for removing a job from the Service Manager based on a simple search I did.   However, I can't see what would be causing this particular error.   Everything else was working fine (and still is, except this MRT problem that started today).

  • Kernel_task reaches high CPU % after boot, mac is then superslow until I close and open the lid.. why?

I've had my macbook pro repaired a few weeks ago (new battery and keyboard).. Ever since then every time I boot it its superslow ... + with high activity on kernel_task.. When I close the lid and open it after 5 seconds again the problem is gone.
What could this be? Is it a hardware or software problem?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • 11.3.1 FRU1 zenworkswindowsservice.exe high cpu after login

    Hi,
I just upgraded the primary & all satellites from 11.3.1 to 11.3.1 FRU1.
With the client upgrades everything goes fine. 11.3.1 to 11.3.1 FRU1 via assignment via ZCC.
After that we changed the client in the add on of the image.
When we restore a new image with that new Agent. The zenworkswindowsservice.exe goes to 60 % CPU when you login the first time with the user. User is created via a DLU.
It stops after you reboot the system... then everything is fine.
So next thing I did restore a new image with the old agent 11.3.1 , login with the same user again. Here there is no issue..
Is this a know issue in the ZEnworks 11.3.1 FRU1 agent?

This key should not be harmful and may even be generally beneficial.
By Default, ZCM restarts the Explorer.exe process after applying a GPO.
In General, this causes no harm but we are unsure of why this was initially done.
It may simply be legacy behavior.
Since it generally causes no harm, it is simply retained as default behavior.
It most commonly causes issues on Terminal Servers where sometimes Explorer.exe does not come back, though even here very few customers have seen this.
Feel free to try disabling the Explorer.exe restart function.
I have never heard of any reports where doing so had a negative impact, even with GPOs in place.
    Hi Craig,
I have done the registry settings but without success the same issue occurs:
First I have set the registry, then reboot the pc because it is a HKLM value. Login first time as the user and the high load occurs again.
As I already told, after logging in as the user to high load appears and I had to reboot to make the issue go away. Today I noticed that without rebooting the high load stops after 39 minutes.
Do you know what could cause this?
It is strange that we do not have this issue with the previous version of the client (11.3.1)...

  • Strange issue when switching between spaces

This morning my laptop (MBP) started doing strange things when I switch space. For starters, it takes a lot longer to actually make the transition. Then, when the desktop has moved, it takes a second or so for the primary application window on that desktop to be activated, and the menu bar does a strange swipe animation. I've noticed in Console that there are errors such as this each time I switch space:

Consider the possibility of third party software incompatibility.
Does this behavior persist for a different user, e.g., Guest User?  Does this behavior persist when starting up in Safe Mode?

  • 9.3GB of "Other" data on iPad, after switching between iTunes libraries

I have a New iPad, and there's 9.3GB occupied by "Other" storage I can't seem to get rid of.
Here's some background that may be relevant.
I recently bought an iPad, connected it to my Mac and synced the Music library.
I later switched to a PC, and wanted to connect the iPad to my new PC (and never again to my Mac). The PC has a different Music library.
When I first connected the iPad to the New PC, it asked me whether it's ok to completely erase the previous library and resync this one. I confirmed. I then went to choose specific playlists to sync (a total of ~60 songs, much less than 10GB).
Ever since, I have this big chunk of Other storage occupied.
After searching a bit online, I saw a recommendation to download iExplorer. Playing with it showed me that under Media-->iTunes_Control-->Music I have many libraries (F00-F49) full of MP3s. Seems like here lies the problem. But I don't know if I can delete them.
    What should I do?
    Thanks

If "Others" is unusually large, you may have something that is corrupted.
    A Restore is recommended.
Do a search and you'll find many discussions on this problem.

  • Why is my laptop running high cpu after i render 3DS Max For a month and what should i do?

I have been trying to run my long 3ds max finals. I have 2 fans blowing my Macbook Pro. The Laptop fan and a regular fan blowing my laptop. after a month of finish rendering. my cpu sky rockets and i i have try scan for malware, virus, spy ware and worms, which didn't do nothing, i also check for defragment. Nothing works. the 3ds max was running on bootcamp windows 7. When i render in 3ds max the cpu hits 100% non stop. should i go to apple store and to get it check and would it cost alot to get it fix? Thank you for anyone answering my question.

The firmware controlling the fans is predictive depending upon what sort of software and it's CPU demands, you have been running.
For instance, you say your 3D program maxes out the CPU, well the computer now knows whenever you launch this program it needs to crank the fans up, even if you don't use much CPU at first, in order to catch a sudden demand in CPU needs and not let the CPU burn up.
Don't know if there is a remedy for this unless not to use the 3D rendering software, or use on a machine with more processing cores and better cooling, like a MacPro.

  • Window repaint failure after switching spaces

    Hey there,
i'm having a very strange problem with Spaces on my Macbook Pro Mid 2010. Sometimes when i switch between spaces the window displayed in the space i switched to is not correclty repainted. This only happens when i use the spaces overview and choose a space in the grid. When i switch via CTRL+cursor everything works just fine.
In the attached screenshot you can see the problem i am talking about. Here i was in the space Textmate is in, switched to spaces overview and reselected the Textmate space.
Did any of you have the same problem? Any suggestions how to fix it? Or is it a hardware failure and my graphics card is messed up once again?
    Thanks in advance

Humm, yeah, that might be the case! Chrome is running almost all the time, so that could be the case Chrome is causing these glitches.
I will check that out and use Firefox in the meantime. Chrome became quite buggy since the last update, it often has trouble rendering pages properly, the whole process hangs for a few seconds... so this seems quite reasonable!

  • OS X partition becomes corrupt after switching from Bootcamp

So I've had to reinstall os x 10.9.1 no less than three  times this week and multiple times before in the past after switching between os x and windows 8.1. This usually happens after I've been using windows for a prolonged period then switch back to os x but it happened today after reinstalling os x from a time machine backup just yesterday. I'll switch between the two and os x becomes corrupt and begins the loading bar sequence after selecting the os x partition via the refit boot manager. I tried repairing the partition using disk utility from the repair partition and an external installation of os x 10.9.1 but every time the disk becomes corrupt and needs to be wiped and reinstalled or install a time machine backup. I've lost count of how many times I've had to do this and to make things even worse both of my external disks have become corrupt after being disconnected for two days while I sort this mess out. Does anyone else have similar issues or can locate an issue somewhere?

Yeah I reinstalled osx 10.9.1 and installed all my apps, put everything back then used bootcamp to create a partition for windows then used wineclone to install my windows 8.1 backup. I jumped from windows > osx > windows > osx inside an hour to move around a few things and I forgot verify bootcamp after I installed the backup and that last time I booted to osx it was corrupted. I used disk utility from my external installation and the recovery partition and both times they need repaired which only came up with the backup and wipe notification window. There have been two occasions where I was able to fix the osx partition from my external osx installation and continue using osx quite perfectly but usually the partition becomes un-mountable after it fails to repair. Usually when this has happened the twenty something times before it's after a prolonged period of a few weeks using windows.
I'm using refit boot manager and paragon NTFS 11 which may be the only software I've installed that could be corrupting the boot.
    SMART status is verified
