ML reinstall question

if i reinstall ML , will i have to download ML again from apple in the form of a big file?

It depends. If you use OS X Recovery, your computer will download Mountain Lion from Apple.
If you have burned the Mountain Lion installer onto a DVD or USB drive, you don't have to download it again. If you haven't got the Mountain Lion installer and you want to make a bootable Mountain Lion DVD or USB drive, first open the App Store, go to Purchases tab and download Mountain Lion.
When the download finishes, close the Mountain Lion installer and use Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable DVD or USB drive > http://liondiskmaker.com
To start from your bootable USB drive or DVD, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting, and select the USB drive or DVD with OS X Mountain Lion

  • Aaargh, panics and a reinstall question

I've been seeing semi random kernel panics (I have concluded it has something to do with the phase of the moon, time of day, hemlines, SAMBA shares, firewire drives, etc, etc). I've gone through all the normal steps and have decided my best bet at this point is a 100% clean re-install.
My question. The machine (g4 Al 15") originally came with 10.3. Some time ago I upgraded to 10.4. This Apple link (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497) says that if you are going to do a reinstall - do it from the original install disks (followed, I assume, by and archive and upgrade).
Is this real? Shouldn't I be able to go ahead and do a fresh install from my 10.4 DVD?
    Thanks for the help.
    G4 15", 2x G5 & Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You can reformat the hard drive and/or perform an Erase & Install using the Tiger retail install package. I did so with my TiBook before loaning it to my girlfriend after my new 17" PB arrived but what is included with the Tiger retail install package will be installed only. If you want to re-install all additional software included with the 10.3 install package, you should use the 10.3 install package and then use Simple Upgrade to install Tiger since you won't need to use the Archive & Install method if done immediately after installing 10.3.
Regarding the kernel panics, an Erase & Install will not resolve it if caused by a RAM problem and defective or incompatible RAM are the most frequent causes of kernel panics.
Before doing a hard drive reformat or an Erase & Install, check Resolving Kernel Panics for troubleshooting steps to take in order with re-installing via an Archive & Install or an Erase & Install the last procedure if all else fails.

  • Reformat/Reinstall Question re Panther

Hi and sorry for any duplication of this questionin other posts.
I need to reformat a 160G HD in my Dual Boot G4. OSX 10.3.9
must be reinstalled. It is too late to use clone apps like SuperDuper because the drive was unfortunately already erased, and a manual drag-back of the entire contents of the
backed-up contents of the HD was performed, leaving missing
invisible files missing. Hence, System 9 Folder seems to be okay, but, for OSX apps there are certain apps - mainly browser/
email, which i would prefer to retain the original settings, and,
migrate existing email folder contents (inbox/sent box etc).
    The browser is Netscape 7.2.
If possible i'd prefer to simply drag/drop over anything that i can
after wiping and reinstalling/updating the HD system back up to 10.3.9. I also assume that for my Sys. 9 folder (dual-bootable MDD) i can do a clean install and drag/drop prefs manually for the various apps within the OS 9 domain which i boot into independent and separately of OSX operation.
I'm looking for the shortest path by which to accomplish this
reinstall and to minimize the amount of individual application
reinstallations from scratch...wherever i can drag existing apps
and associated Prefs into the right places within OSX Panther.
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Cornelius, thanks and i will try to clarify as concisely
    as possible;
Does this HDD have anything on it currently?<<
Yes, the HD does have elements of the previous OSX System
but will not boot from OSX (a result of the "drag-back" of
backed up content, along with my OS 9 Folder, rather than
being able to successfully use SuperDuper or other clone
    app....
Do I understand that you backed up the HDD in question by copy by dragging to a backup drive, erased HDD and copied stuff back by dragging?<< </div>
Yes. As such, System 9 FOlder/Contents seems to be fine
having done it that way, but i recognize why OSX does not.
Are you planning to erase the drive again, install Panther, and repeat the process of copying by dragging?<<</div>
I want to erase/reformat the drive again, and reinstall Panther using proper Disk-Set procedure of restore/reinstall
but save original prefs of as much of the previous system(s)
apps (for both OS 9 and OS X) i want to save/preserve..
presumably having to do so by manual drag where possible.
Does this mean you want to repeat the process which you have already performed?<< </div>
No, just whatever can be salvaged for individual application
    preferences, most importantly, Browser/Email (bookmarks,
inbox/address books, mail settings prefs)- within BOTH
systems... I would like to preserve, rather than having to
    a) re-enter User Prefs, Mail Settings and also need to
keep existing Email in the respective browser mail apps.
Other apps, i can take the time to reinstall and re-enter
    registration data.
I hesitate to make assumptions in terms of what you are doing. However, backing up and restoring by copying by dragging, while it works for simple data files, for some typs of apps, and for OS 9 System Folder and OS 9 Applications folder, will not give you the desired outcomes for other types of files. In OS X there are hidden files which are essential to the efficient functioning of the OS that cannot be copied by dragging.<<</div>
My questions above is to ascertain exactly what you have done so far and what the current situation is. We can then take it from there to see what can be done next to minimize the damage and enable you to recover in the best way possible.<<
I totally understand. the entire situation as it stands
happened due to some anomaly whereby using CarbonCopyCloner
(and SuperDuper before that) was sidetracked because both
programs reported inability to recopy "All Files" back to
the Drive (error message to that effect). To get back up and running in OS 9, I then just dragged OS 9 System back
onto the HD and have been using that environment only.
Soo, the bottom line is, i need to erase the HD and reinstall it all...but want to save whatever prefs i can
in the proper fashion. (Far more familiar with doing so in
    OS 9 stuff than OSX)
Hope that addresses where i'm at with this and appreciate
    your help.

  • System reinstall question

i've got a (new) late 2011 macbook pro, bought it on sale at future shop. when i did the migration data transfer assistant from my old mac to the new one, something got messed up. so now i have to wipe my late 2011 macbook pro clean and start fresh. i'm not quite sure how to do this since the old os versions always came with a cd.
i have a mountain lion installer on a thumb drive. can i boot my 2011 macbook pro from the thumb drive and use disk utility to reformat and then install a clean system directly from the thumb drive?
    sorry for the newbie questions.

Boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, wipe the HD, reinstall Lion, and on first boot follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to migrate properly. This assumes you still have the old Mac.

  • Boot Camp/Reinstall Question

I have a quick question regarding the Mac OS X/Windows XP setup. I have both installed on my computer, but I am having problems with my Mac OS X side, and want to reinstall the OS. Would it affect my Windows side of the hard drive? Or will reinstalling Mac OS X wipe out my whole HD?

If I do an Erase and Install for my Mac OS X will it affect my Windows XP software?? Thats the question I'm having, I did the Archive and Install - didn't fix the issue.

  • Tiger Reinstall Questions

things have been crashy lately - most Apps have won't stay open for more than 10 minutes. I gather from the forums that reinstall is a good solution. My admittedly nooby questions are:
    1) Can I Archive&Install to outboard diskdrive and safely bring the stuff back to fresh OS? MacHD is 1G short of full and I cannot free up the recommended 10Gs.
    2) If there a way to reinstall without completely clearing hard drive data? i.e. do I have to back up everything on my computer?
    Many thanks in advance!

Can I safely run iTunes library from a Firewire (400 I believe) outboard disk? The library is a memory hog and takes up 45 gigs on my 75 Gig drive
Yes, I do, works fine... faster than the older internal drives too.
Can I upgrade my internal hard drive to a larger one? I have mirrored doors G4. And if so what's your recommendation?
Oh my, yes... I see your in Japan, but to give you an idea, assuming it;s the non-FW/800 model MDD...

  • ITunes reinstall question on a new HDD.

Ok, this may be a bit different...I have not located an answer on the boards to solve this.
I installed a new HDD due to several persistent issues even after restoring from Time Machine more than once. I figured the issue was imbedded in my OS that lived in Time Machine. Seems correct, after install of new HDD and several wipes and reinstalls, I backed up iTunes and iPhoto and docs...on a new external HDD. I reinstalled OS imported photos, so far so good. How the heck do I only reinstall iTunes to include my iPhone data? I can copy/paste all the songs into the "new" iTunes but the iPhone is not recognized. Any ideas out there?

Use TM or Migration Assistant to restore your user folder.

  • Reinstall questions

Recently I replaced my hard drive. I was pretty well backed up, but I had to reinstall the OS that came with the machine (10.4.3) and then update it to 10.4.11. There were some glitches and I sought the assistance of the Genius Bar people. And ended up typing my new account information sort of sidewise and made a typo. How do I change the short name of my user account?
Likewise, every time I wake up the machine or boot it, I get a box first thing wanting a keychain entry, which doesn't respond to my account password, but I can cancel it and it just goes away. I would like it to go away permanently. It never did that before. In fact, I get twice. When I click cancel the first time, I get the same dialog box again which goes away when I click cancel the second time, at least until it wakes up from subsequent nap. How do I fix that?
    Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, I think we should do a little maintenance if something disappeared, very strange that it disappeared on another drive though!?
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when that completes Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
There is a way to replace/install just that, but I wonder if other things might not be missing!?
    Get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then extract what you need from your Install Disk, like System Preferences PKG.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Sold iMac-Wiped HD-Reinstall Question

Bought a new iRetina 27" and am selling my old 22" iMac.  I've zero wiped the HD and have reinstalled Yosemite and have reached the point where the setup process is pick the country.  I'm thinking I should power down here and leave the rest for the new owner.  I'd like to tell him the steps that will follow, but I don't remember them.  Can anyone list them for me?
When i downloaded the OS 10.10 I used my Apple ID.  Does this affect the new owner of the iMac?  How does he make the iMac his own, as far as Apple is concerned?
If anyone has any thoughts on what the new owner is going to need to know, please let me know.
Do all iMacs have built-in wifi?  I never used it on the old one and I'm at a point where I can't check it.

That's quite alright - I don't care for it either. The problem with the new app store versions is that you must "accept" it; doing that will associate it with your Apple ID and it becomes non-transferable. Here are a couple of excerpts from the iPhoto SLA (I picked iPhoto, but they're pretty much the same) - this is for the app store version:
Both of those are from here:
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iPhoto.pdf
Not quite confused enough? This is from the iLife licensing agreement (which was what you got on install disks: iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, etc):
    From here:
    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iLife11.pdf
As you can see, they are quite different. So, if you have separate iLife  disks, you can either keep them or give them to a buyer (I still have and use mine!). If you don't have them and accept the apps in the app store, they become yours only and you can't transfer them.

  • Itunes not working, reinstalling questions

I have a problem with itunes. When I first turn on my computer I can open itunes with no problems. But right after I close the itunes program and later on want to restart it, it doesn't work. I'm using a Windows xp based pc.
Now, if i want to reinstall itunes, will i lose all the music, videos, tv shows that I purchased through itunes?
And what is the best way to make it so I don't lose them.
    TIA

I did follow the instructions and deleted the preference files. This didn't help, but did get iTunes to treat the installation as a new one.
A new version of iTunes came out today, so I did a complete uninstall and reinstall. I again removed the preference files. After installing, iTunes itself seemes to be working. I can log in with my Apple ID and it does not hang anymore. Unfortuantely the problem with attaching my iPhone 4 and iPad still occurs. When I plug them in iTunes "hangs" for about 5 minutes. When iTunes becomes responsive again, the devices do not show up. Windows recognizes the devices and iTunes diagnostics also reconize the devices even down to the serial number. Maybe resetting the devices would help, but you can understand I how reluctant I am to do anything that could make them inoperable.
My iPod nano still connects to iTunes fine.
So I have a functioning iTunes program with nothing in the library, a functioning apple ID, and no way to sync, upgrade, or backup my iPad and phone.
BTW polydorus ... thanks for taking the time to help. It's a thankless job trying to help the frustrated.

  • ITunes Reinstall question

I have a problem. My old iPod died, and I got a new one, but I don't want to lose all the songs on my iTunes. My iTunes won't recognize the new iPod. Will reinstalling iTunes help? Will reinstalling iTunes cause me to lose my data?

You can uninstall and reinstall all you want and your music will stay the same... completely safe to reinstall, your music files will not be affected.

  • Reinstall question UGH!!!!!!

My Powerbook is running slow and sluggish and will not sync to ical or iphone. I am thinking about reinstalling Leopard. Will I need to reinstall all of the applications from scratch and lose my address book and calendar and email? I have backed up with Time machine but I don't want to have to restore if I dont have to.
What's the best way to do this?
    Thanks,

If you do system restore from TM or use migration assistant from TM you are likely to bring those problems along. you can do [an archive and install|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US] which will keep your user data but might not get rid of all the problems either.
if you are having many problems an erase and install is probably the best but it will as you suspect wipe all your data completely.
You can then manually migrate ONLY what you need. this is somewhat time consuming but will give you the cleanest system. use [this post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] as a guide on what to migrate. you can use TM browse mode when restoring. after you reinstall, control-click on TM in the dock and select "browse other TM disks". this will let you access your TM backups and restore what you want where you want to.

  • Uninstall/reinstall question

Can I uninstall Elements 12 and reinstall on the same machine without deactivating? If not, I do not see "deactivate" on the help menu like other Adobe products. (Elements will rarely even load on my i7 machine and I want to reinstall it on the C drive to see if that helps.)

    45Pinto
Premiere Elements 11 and 12 take over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first video drag to the Expert workspace Timeline. Sometimes it does it OK, sometimes not. In this scheme, you never do get to see the new project dialog as in prior versions. But it is there.
To set the project preset manually, open a new project, go to File Menu/New/Project. Set your project preset to match the properties of your source media. Before you exit the final dialog in that area, be sure to put a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". Then back in the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace, import your media via Add Media/Files and Folders (if appropriate)/Project Assets from where you drag the file(s) to the Timeline.
Definitely do the Premiere Elements 12 default installation (Local Disc C/Program Files/Adobe/....) and assure Scratch Disks set up so that they are directed to a location with enough free hard drive space to accept them...they can be directed to an external hard drive (formatted NTFS rather than FAT32 - Windows). In the opened Premiere Elements project, see Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks.)
We will be watching for your progress.
    Thanks.

  • Uninstall to reinstall question

    Hi all,
I just upgraded my "Production Suite" to FCP Studio. The install went well enough and everything was working just find. Then I don't know what I did but all of a sudden Motion started acting squirrelly. When I "Apply" an item it comes in off centered, the location indicator of the timeline doesn't line up with the frame it's at. Like when I press the home key, the indicator moves to frame 2 and not frame 1. This is just a visual thing but it would be nice to have it line up properly.
So I was going to uninstall and then reinstall the app. But I can't find any info on which files I need to trash. I've tried trashing the prefs and reinstalling (without uninstalling first) and it hasn't helped. So I'm hoping the community can help.
    Thanks in advance.

With your installation, you also have installed the motion library of effects. You may not need to delete those files. I would delete the app and just the pref.list from my USER/LIBRARY/PREFERENCES folder and re-install the app. See how you go...

  • Another uninstall reinstall question from CS3 to CS4 minus license

Hello all and thank you in advance, I apologize if the question seems all to common. But, after review here, I cannot determine the answer.
I am running CS3 Design Standard on 10.5.6--no problems. On tuesday, I will be receiving a new, full version of CS4 Design Premium with a new license.
I definitely do NOT want to keep CS3 and the old license. I know about the uninstaller AND the CS3 Uninstall Script available at Adobe.com.
Which should I use to completely remove all traces of CS3 (along with preferences and license) before installing CS4.
I obviously want to avoid any potential problems when I install CS4. I also do not want to disturb my installation of GoLive 9!
    THank you.
    Alex

I'm not really sure what your question is as you have not asked one.
If you don't want CS3 uninstall it.
    then install CS4
Golive is not part of any creative Suite.
