MM Fiber to MM Fiber

Hello,
I have 4 different fiber network feeds coming in from different buildings / closet into a room.. from that room a 24 strand fiber runs to the datacenter.
All the fiber is MM 62.5.
So lets say I want to run patch cables from each of the fiber patch panels to this 24 strand fiber and bypass using a switch in the closet all together.
Is this possible?
So for Building A it would look like this...
Building A: 6 strands to fiber patch panel -> Miscellaneous Building Closet Fiber Jumper -> 6 strands to fiber patch panel in Datacenter

Hi Jensen,
don't use any switch in the middle. Just patch from one patch panel location building_A_incoming_fiber to the corresponding outgoing patch panel location Datacentre_fiber_out . Often these operations are referred as "loop" because you do not terminate the fiber on an active device but you loop it back to another fiber. As above mentioned, if your patch panel is passive (does not refresh the signal) you need to count the total distance and to compare to the type of MM fiber you are using .
good Luck

  • VoIP on fiber backbone over fiber converter

A few days ago i was asked to add additional voip-phones into an existing voip-ready network.
I am not new to qos/voip, the general voip implementation is no problem. It is the additional connection that needs to be implemented.
    The scenario:
E4506 (existing) ---- C3750X-12S  (just installed) --- fiber (existing)  --- fiber converter (just  installed) --- 2-Ports Mini Switch (just installed) --- client and voip  phone connected separately (to be implemented)
Now, what I expect to happen is that the VoIP phone  should boot up and  send it's DHCP Discover in the native VLAN 1, obtain  its IP address, immediately releases  the IP address and hangs on to  the voice VLAN 2. It then reboots and sends the DHCP Discover in the  Voice VLAN 2and obtain its IP address.
Does it work over fiber converter and 2-Ports Mini Switch?
    Thanks for your suggestions!
    Regards,
    Darius

    ok, that is fine :-)
VLAN1 is self-explanatory. After rebooting in VLAN2 the phone will send VLAN2 tagged Packets over the Mini-Switch. In your opinion, will the Mini Switch forward these tagged packets to C3750X in the correct VLAN2?
just to be sure bevore i say "yes" to my client:-)

    we also tried the following:
    2.     We compared OS/driver versions on both ( Oracle VM and Oracle Linux ) machines.
    Here is the table:

    zil01gscmgt01 Oracle Enterprise Linux release 5.5 ( Carthage ) 8.03.01.04.05.05_k

  • Interconnecting MDS 9148 with 2 different Fiber Providers

    Hi
I would like discuss the following issue :
We have 2 HP SAN EVA 8400 ( one at the production site and one at our Disaster Recovery site ) replicating using a fiber channel service from ( 2* FC dark fiber from PROVIDER A )
They are linked together  with 4 Cisco MDS 9148 Multilayer Fabric Switch (2 fabric ).
We have recently purchased a new fiber service ( 2* 1Gb FC managed service from PROVIDER B) in order to create a port channel  with the 2 running ones and we have some problem.
We disconnected the PROVIDER A FC ( running for 10 years now )  and left the SAN replication during a couple of days running with the new PROVIDER B 1 Gb FC to make sure the link was stable and we had no issue.
Then we tried to connect the 2 FC together from the 2 providers and tried to create a Port channel.
However we discovered that to create a PortChannel, interfaces must have the same configurations ( speed, mode, rate )
In our case , the interface FC 1/1 using PROVIDER A link is running at 4 Gb and the interface FC 1/2 using PROVIDER B is running at 1 Gb

Have you already seen that kind of situation ?
Is there a best practice  to reduce the interface speed in order to create the PortChannel with identical interface setup ?
Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

the RTT delay by each link is different and this is causing packets to arrive out of order.
not sure if port channeling between two different links or different characteristics is good practive.

  • How to identify fiber wiring.

    Hi all,
I'm working on documentation for my data room and I can't find a way to identify some of my fiber cables... How can I make sure which are single and which multi mode? Some cables I identified by reading info on the coating, but there are a few that I can't recognize. Will switchport config somehow indicate what mode is being used?
    thanks
    forman

It can be difficult to identify fiber types for installed cable.  This is the reason that it is critical for installers and technicians to maintain the network documentation. But, I am preaching to the chior with you because you are the one cleaning up the mess.
As you have found, the identification can be made with the printing on the jacket.  The jacket color (or connector boot color) on some cables may give you an indication. The link below gives reference to common fiber jacketing color codes. The switch/router port type may be of some use.  A 1000Base-SX port is used with multimode fiber.  However, it will not tell you whether the fiber core is 62.5 or 50 micron multimode fiber.  Some fiber port types (or pluggable transceivers) will only work with singlemode fiber.

  • Mixing of Fiber core on a SGE2000

    Hi
We do have an couple of SGE2000 switch, all of them having MGBLH1 SFP.
The question is what would be the problem using 50microns fiber &62.5microns on the same switch??
    Thanks

Maybe I am just confused regarding your question/network.
Anytime you have a mismatch of fiber cores, you create more uncertainty and confusion for future maintenance and troubleshooting. That said, can you connect the fibers together and light will pass.  The direction of the light through the transition will determine the amount of light lost.
    Transmitter >---- 50micron------ x ----- 62.5micron --------   Little difference in loss
    Transmitter >---- 62.5micron------ x ----- 50micron --------  Larger loss
    Receiver <---- 62.5micron------ x ----- 50micron --------  Little difference in loss
    Receiver <---- 50micron------ x ----- 62.5micron --------  Larger loss
The SX optics module will support either 50 or 62.5 micron fiber cores. You could have 50 micron fiber on the SFP transmit port and 62.5 micron on the SFP receiver port, and it will work as long as the links and losses are within the SX specifications. Longer distances are supported over 50micron fiber, especially newer fiber.
    Good luck!

  • Fiber requirements

I want to order Fiber cable from Fiber patch panel to GBIC for catalyst2948G (1000BASE-LX/LH), i think this will be Fiber cable Sc/Fc, is it the same as LC/SC?? another thing for the length, i need 20m long but i find only length either 1 or 5 meters? please help
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
You need to order a cable 8.3/125 micron SMF SC-SC cable if it is GBIC module on the Switch. If it is SFP module on switch you need to order 8.3/125 micron SMF SC-LC cable.
As for as length, the satndard lengths are 1,3,5,9 & 15 meters.
But if u catch hold of a cabling vendor, he will make you a customizable cable.

  • 2960 switch fiber connection over 40km single strand SM fiber

    Hello everyone,
We are having an issue with the connection in the subject. We just gost dark fiber for connecting 2 2960 switches with single strand single mode fiber over more than 10Km.
Looking at the compatibility matrix and the SFP gigabit applications the 1000BASE-BX10 is the best I could find but cannot reach more than 10Km.
Can anyone please propose a solution? If media converters are the only way to go can please sugest manufacturer/model (even with SC connector) since Cisco does not make Media converters.
    Thank you
    Mario

A 40 km link is usually run using 1550nm wavelength due to lower light loss on the fiber at this wavelength.  The 1000BaseEX module is spec'd to 40km and runs at 1310 nm wavelength, but you will lose light through a WDM filter (which is integrated in the single fiber SFP) which would reduce the link's length.  I would check with some of the 3rd party media converter manufactures to see if any of them have a lower cost solution that operates over a single fiber at >40km.
Sorry... a link loss budget is the sum of:
Fiber cable loss + fiber connector losses + fiber splice losses + impairment losses (dispersion or PMD) + aging losses (safety margin).
If the transceiver's Loss Budget is greater than the Link Loss Budget, then the link should operate.
www.thefoa.org has some good videos for understanding fiber terminology at an easy to understand level.

    format-string "USER:%s%s" mac-address circuit-id which will result in a username string like USER:0000.1111.2222CIRCID
although you use the authorize command to sed this username to the radius, nad if it will return an accept, this means the dhcp transaction will complete and the sub will get everything applied whichever the radius accept returns.
but the internal state is called unauthenticated for BNG, because we have no user username or password.
authorize uses a predefined password based on some circuit info. no user info really.
Most providers would like to get something from teh user like a pass and uname to get the user specific profiles
    but this is truly optional.

  • Can fiber channel be used for connect server to a storage in two nodes RAC

I decided to have an Oracle RAC cluster with only two nodes.
The storage I have is a sun 3510FC. Also have five fiber chanal ports. But my each server (Sunfire v240) has got one Ultra160SCSI multimode (SE/LVD) not any fiber chanal ports. I found that there is some FC card available to use but none fiber switch available. I want to install this FC cards to the servers and make a straight connection with fibre cable to the storage. Can this be asolution or do i have to have a fibre switch?

    Hi
Irrespective of whether such a configuration is supported or not by Oracle.
Has anybody got 10gR2 RAC working on
    a. 2 servers
    b. shared storage with HBA and fibre channel cables
    c. interconnect on LAN
(yes we know it is not supported by Oracle...but again we are not going production on that....just for demo/training purposes)
    No FC switch
    No ethernet switch
If anybody has got this working would be great to hear of 'issues to guard against'
    Thanks

  • How can I get Verizon to install fiber in my neighborhood? Have been waiting 10 years.

How can I get Verizon to install fiber in my neighborhood?
I have been on the notification list for nearly 10 years with no action.
Current DSL download speed is only 3.0 Mbps, the max available for copper twisted pair, so I am told by tech support.
Unless Verizon will install fiber in my neighborhood, my only option to obtain faster internet service is to change to another provider, though I would prefer to remain a Verizon customer.
Any suggestions for alternate providers, under the circumstances?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Forget it. I've been waiting 13 years and every town around me has Fios, in fact my town is a small [27k population] city who provides the phone exchange numbers for the surrounding towns with Fios! Figure that out. I myself have given up and am moving on to Time Warner for my internet and phone and will not return even if fios does appear before the end times.. They are actually cheaper than verizon when flat rate phone service and real broadband speeds are figured in. Verizon only has last century's DSL technology available. Leave verizon, they don't care if do or not.

  • ATT Fiber Ring 50MB line - no negotiating

    Hello,
Firstly the situation we have here is that we are on the outskirts of an ATT Fiber Ring and we have servers currently hosted at an ATT Datacenter. They stated we could hop on that fiber box with their help and get a 50MB link to our cage in the datacenter...great news huh? They also stated that they would give us an Ethernet handoff...well they didn't...fiber instead. So we went out and bought 2 3560G with GBICs, one for each end. We tested the switches inside the office with a fiber cable and everything was fine.
So then we hooked up these switches to the Cisco ONS 15327 and ATT repeatedly told us that the circuit was fine...no problem...great. Still no data...they said just hook them up and ping...nothing else to configure. We did this and nothing happened. Also when doing a "show int gig0/49" we get line down and no lights on the outside of the GBIC on the 3560G. But when we flip the fiber cables the wrong way the 15327 seems to respond so there doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with our setup.
I'm not terribly great with these things but ATT is not helping us at all. They said they have no Cisco techs that could help us...don't know why...seems pretty simple to me...we must be missing some sort of protocol or something for the handshake that isn't happening. I have included a copy of the configs maybe someone out there can at least shine some light before we tell ATT to shove it.
    Thank you

The Cisco ONS 15305 transports Ethernet and TDM traffic inside an SDH frame for metropolitan-area network (MAN or metro) applications. The Cisco ONS 15305 can be used as customer premises equipment (CPE) for medium- and large-sized businesses - collecting voice and data traffic from each site for switched voiced and data services, Layer 1 and Layer 2 VPNs, and Internet access - for transport over an STM-1, STM-4, or STM-16 SDH uplink to the central office. The Cisco ONS 15305 can also be deployed as a central office aggregator; consolidating STM-1 access links from Cisco ONS 15302 Multiservice Provisioning Platforms or other Cisco ONS 15305 CPE, as well as directly connected customer TDM or data traffic from electrical interfaces

  • What are the host network requirements for a 2012 R2 failover cluster using fiber channel?

I've seen comments on here regarding how the heartbeat signal isn't really required anymore - is that true?  We started using Hyper-V in its infancy and have upgraded gleefully every step of the way.  With 2012 R2, we also upgraded from 1gb iSCSI
to 8GB Fiber Channel.  Currently, I have three NICs in use on each host.  One for "No cluster communication" on it's own VLAN.  Another for "Allow cluster network communication on this network" but NOT allowing clients, on
a different VLAN.  And lastly the public network which allows cluster comms and clients on it (public VLAN).
Is it still necessary to have all three of these NICs in use?  If the heartbeat isn't necessary any more, is there any reason to not have two public IPs and do away with the rest of the network?  (two for fault tolerance)  Does Live Migration
still use Ethernet if FC is available?  I wasn't sure what all has changed with these requirements since Hyper-V first came out.
If it matters, we have 5 servers w/160GB RAM, 8 NICs, dual HBAs connected to redundant FC switches, going to two SANs.  We're running around 30 VMs right now.
Can someone share their knowledge with me regarding the proper setup for my environment?  Many Thanks!

    Hi,
You can setup cluster with a single network but that leaves you with single point of failure on the Networking front, it is still recommended to have a heartbeat network.
Live migration would still happen though Ethernet, it has nothing to do with FC. Don't get confused, you had iSCSI for storage which used one of your VLAN and now you have FC for your storage.
Your hardware specs looks good. You can set up the following networks -
    1. Public Network - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
    2. Heartbeat Network - Don't use teamed Adaptor
    3. Live Migration - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
Plan properly and draw guidelines to visualize and to remove single point of failure at all points.
Feel free to ask if you have some more queries.
    Regards

  • What are the fiber connectors

The rapid progress of information technology, it is for data, voice, images, multimedia communications, a growing demand for Ethernet broadband access methods have been mentioned, therefore more and more important position. But traditional Category 5 Ethernet cables can only transmit signals 100 meters, in the transmission distance and coverage can not meet the actual network environment. At the same time, large capacity optical fiber communication with its information, confidentiality, good, light weight, small size, no relay, the advantages of long-distance has been widely used, fiber optic transceivers is the use of this high-speed optical fiber transmission medium a good solution to the Ethernet in the transmission problems. In some large-scale enterprises, network building in the direct use of optical fiber backbone network for the transmission medium build, while the internal LAN transmission medium is usually copper wire, how to achieve the same optical fiber backbone network connected to the LAN then? This requires a different port, different line, different optical fiber link between conversion and guarantee the quality. The emergence of fiber optic transceivers, twisted pair electrical signals and optical signals to each other conversion, to ensure that the data packets in the smooth transfer between the two networks, while the network will limit the transmission distance of 100 meters from the copper wire extended to 100 km (single - mode fiber).
Then, what is the fiber connectors?

X2-10GB-T is end of life soon.
