MM losing preferences

Hey all, not a huge deal overall but this seems to be happening more often than ever. Have got the mighty mouse scroll ball 'click' set for Expose, and side buttons for 'Dashboard' . Both preferences seem to be reset back to default every now and again, I cannot pinpoint my previous actions to cause this but can confirm this does not occur if I do a restart. I do undertake the usual repair permissions but this has only begun a few months ago and has probably occured 4-6 times. Setting the prefs within preferences will probably keep me going again for the next few weeks but then will be at the same default point. Btw, nothing else seems to be affected. What's the next step?
Cheers All

Hi argento,
You can try a simple test. create another account, log into that account and see if mouse does the same thing. Since it seems sporadic, it may be hard to catch, but if the mouse does NOT exhibit same issues, then it might be safe to assume a corrupt mouse plist which is located here: User > Library > Preferences... com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist is the name of file. You can always drag the file to desktop, your Mac will generate a new one and you can see if that helps. Then just trash the plist file or drag back into preferences...
Good luck, Rick

  • Losing preferences on CC update

I've updated InDesign CC three times now and each time I lose my modified preferences. Is this a bug? Is there a fix on the way?
Note that I do not lose my saved Workspace/panel locations. Just losing the modified preferences in the InDesign menu (Mac).

Looks like a permissions problem on the preferences folder. Does this happen everytime you quit InDesign and relaunch? If so, then try this:
    1) Quit InDesign if running.
    2) Navigate to Users/username/Library/Preferences/
    3) Command+left-click on Adobe InDesign folder and select Get Info.
    4) Expand the Sharing and Permissions panel and click on the lock icon on the bottom right to add your account and provide Read & Write access to your current account and
    5) Add Administrator and Administrators to this panel and provide Read & Write access privileges.
    6) Click on the Gear icon and click on  Apply to enclosed items.
    7) Click on the Lock icon back and close the Get info window.
    8) Relaunch InDesign and make changes in the preferences and restart InDesign again to check.

  • Uninstalling Logitech Control Center 3.2 without losing preferences

I installed the latest; buggy version of LCC 3.2 for the mac. I'm on Snow Leopard. I had a similar situation on another mac; where I downgraded to 3.1 but _lost ALL my preferences. I tried to retrieve them using Time machine; but could still not make its data return and had to redo all my settings. Very time consuming. If I downgrade to LCC 3.1; how can I avoid losing my pref files for at least 100 apps...?
    thanks

you should be able to duplicate your preferences folder and save the duplicate as a backup. The folder is at
    /Users/your account/Library/Preferences
Not sure why this wouldn't work with Time machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Premiere Elements 7: losing preferences randomly

Once in a while (every ten times starting PrEl I guess) Premiere is losing my preferences, window settings etc. ("do not show again" messages appear, preference options are set to default ...).
It happened when PrEl crashes, but only sometimes. Now it happened when I normally closed PrEl yesterday and opened it today.
It annoys me. I now did a backup of the user folder (c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Premiere Elements\7.0), to restore it more faster. But what can be the reasons? (Couldn't find anything in the forum except for network drive/redirections problems: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2728602#2728602).
    using Windows XP SP3
program and settings both on disk c:
PrEl starting with a user with restricted rights (installed with admin user)

8GB free disk space is wholly inadequate (you do mean disk space and not RAM?). You need a minimum of 30GB defragmented space to reliably create a PRE output. If your 8GB is 1/3rd of total space then your total hard-disk is only 24GB which suggests a pretty old PC. I think you must provide much more information about your PC and the video clips (see the last bullet following):
    Some basics:
    Install all Windows updates
Install latest version of QuickTime (v7.6.7 at time of writing)
Install most recent graphics and sound drivers from the manufacturers web sites
    Run Disk Cleanup
Run Defragmenter (it will not have a noticeable effect on drive life).

  • InDesign CS6 crashing and losing preferences

I've had some terrible crashing in InDesign CS6 (and Acrobat). At least 2-3 times per day. When InDesign crashes, I lose my preferences and some of my workspace settings. Any fix for this?
Any fix for the crashing? It's inconsistent on when it crashes (saving, exporting, etc) and I've re-loaded the entire suite again. I'm running OSX Lion...

    Hi,
Although I have no answer as to why your ID keeps crashing, you can do this to restore your settings.
Frist try resetting your preference as you did by restarting ID, then set your preferences again, then quit ID.
Then go to the below directories and make a copy of the file "InDesign SavedData" and store it somewhere else.
    Users/[user]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version [version]/InDesign SavedData
If you happen to crash again and lose your settings, quit ID then replace the file in the above directory with your backup.
    Hope that helps.

I did this yesterday and following my crash this morning, I reloaded the data file - didn't work, had to reset all my prefs again.

  • Losing preferences in Mail

Everytime I close Mail, I lose my preference settings.. eg Rules, Signatures...
Does anybody have a fix for this?
I will also add I'm using OS10.8.2 (Couldn't find a forum for it)

While the Mac is generally more secure than Windows, the preview pane viewing is not recommended for other reasons than just security. It may take extra time to view a message with an inlined attachment. At least if you do use the preview pane, turn off loading images in message in the mail preferences to avoid that problem. Spam can also show off nasty pictures that way, and you can tell if a message has an attachment before opening it by adding the attachment column with the control-mouse click on the column heading. It will show a paperclip in that column if an attachment is present.

  • Losing preferences

I have been operating on os10.4.11 and recently restarted the computer. Upon restart most of my previous system preference settings seem to have been lost. All my files are present but the doc has reverted to its original set up. Also when i try to start software that requires classic OS it says that classic cant be started because it is having "trouble saving preferences required to run classic". I have reinstalled Tiger OS and no change. Even the mail settings are lost. I reentered many of the preferences again but they seem to be lost anytime I shut down and restart the computer.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

  • Losing preferences, keychain, resources at random

I'm using a mirrored doors G4 with OS 10.4.10, although I have this problem in every version of OS 10 I have used -
A couple weeks after intallation (or reinstallation), I will lose all my desktop preferences after restart. Then my Safari will lose resources and become unopenable. Then I will lose all my mail passwords, then my Mail accounts will disappear. Keychain will require first aid 4-5 time a day. Finder will start to freeze up 2-3 times a day.
All other application functions will be fine. I can work in Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator, print, etc.
I have tried everything. I have thrown away preferences, emptied chaches, I have run every diagnostic program I can find and I have wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the entire system, soup to nuts. Nothing works. This problem keeps coming back.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I would run the Apple Hardware Test and see if it flags something. Have you run any RAM tests such as Rember? It's said to have a better RAM tester then the AHT disk. Perhaps you have some bad RAM causing directory corruption. Have you tried DiskWarrior yet? I run it once a month.
    Cheers!

  • Problems with user account / losing preferences

    Hallo!
Recently, my iBook is doing strange things. Suddenly, all my preferences (bookmarks, themes, wallpaper etc) disappear, i don´t know why. I have to reinstall everything, and then (some time later) it all starts from the beginning (disappearing).
I think this might be due to the presence of other user accounts (i bought the iBook from a friend), but it is impossible to delete them.
And there is my question: what about a complete re-installing of the iBook? I have the 2 installing CDs, that should be ok, shouldn´t it?
As i am totally new on apple, i need your opinion:
what will disappear when re-installing the iBook? Will NeoOffice still be there?
Is it - in your point of view - a good idea to do that reinstalling?
Thank you very much for your advice!

Hi there, It sounds like the account/shortname/home folder was renamed at one time.
Have you tried making a new Admin account yet in System Preferences>Accounts?
I have the 2 installing CDs, that should be ok, shouldn´t it?
If they are the right ones, that may do it, what are the 2z-***-***-A numbers on them and the info on your iBook...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware and report this upto *but not including the Serial#*...
    Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 4
    CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 10 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.25 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
what will disappear when re-installing the iBook? Will NeoOffice still be there?
With an Erase & Install, everything will be erased and you start out with only what the iBook originally came with. An Archive & Install will just replace the OS files.

  • Safari keeps losing preferences

This has been happening for a few months now, cannot remember after which "upgrade". Extremely annoying.
I don't want the Apple page to be my startup page, I do not want the default settings.
I have mentioned the problem to Apple a few times as bug report but nothing has happened. Reading the other posts on this subject it seems there is no cure. Other people are worse off as they have many crashes as well. Safari rarely crashes on me - only sometimes when there are movies/flv files involved.
So I am moving to Firefox (reluctantly) until there is a fix.

So I am moving to Firefox (reluctantly) until there is a fix.
That's not going to help you at all. There is no fix because there is no bug to fix here.
Why don't you just delete your Safari preferences, then restart Safari and recreate your preference settings? That would ensure you don't have a corrupted preferences file, which is what causes this.

  • IPod Losing Preferences?

I just started using a bluetooth adapter for my iPod. It works beautifully, but I just went to watch a video and they weren't there. A bit confused by this, I decided to plug in my iPod and see if they were still there. Most of them were, but I tried to play them and it just froze iTunes (PC). I then tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. Now the PC doesn't even recognize it. So I switched it over to the Mac and it came up fine. Unfortunately, the videos claim that they aren't videos even tho when I play them they come up as videos. I can't reformat because I'll lose anything.

Guys, I really need help with this immediately. I need to have this as a demo for work in the next day or two so I need to get this resolved. Even if you just have a simple suggestion, please post it. If I have tried it, I'll let you know. Thanks!

  • Lost preferences when InDesign CS6 crashes or force-quits

For the most part InD CS6 is pretty stable although I've had a few crashes. On occasion InDesign will hang up when I click to sign out of a Folio Builder account. Eventually I just have to force-quit InD. When I relaunch InD CS6 all my user preferences are lost, including all my Print Presets and Document Presets and InDesign restarts as though I'm launching it for the very first time. This has happened often enough now that I keep a good copy of my InDesign Defaults preference file on my desktop so I can copy it back to User/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0/en_US folder before I relaunch. Sometimes I have to do this twice before InD will recognize my user preference file.
This never happened with older version of InDesign. If InDesign CS5 crashed or require a force-quit it would always relaunch with the last saved preference version. InDesign CS6 is actually updating the preference file each time I legitimately quit the application and everything is as it should be except when there is a crash or force-quit -- then it simply ignores the last-saved preference file and reverts to some "first-launch" preference. I have no idea why this is happening.
I'm hoping if someone there at Adobe can tell me if this is a bug that will be addressed in a future update, because I don't know what I can do other than keep my backup pref file handy. It's either that, or reload all the Saved Print Presets, Save Document Presets, and then go through the list of Preferences each time there is a crash or I have to force-quit.
I'm using an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 with 4GB RAM, running Lion 10.7.5

Finally figured it out. Cache files were interferring. I went to User/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0/en_US folder and noticed tons of cache files. I opened another user account on my computer, which I rarely use, and noticed that account had a small handful of folders and files and never had the problem of losing preferences. So I went back to my main user account, deleted all the cach files, figuring that InDesign would recreate new ones anyway.
Now when InDesign crashes (which is less frequent now) at least my preferences aren't all lost.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac preferences

I have an iMac with OSX 10.2.8. When doing a reinstall using the software install and restore disk as directed by Apple, I was told to take my preferences folder out of the library folder in my hard drive and store it on my desktop. I was under the impression that this was just a precautionary measure so that should I lose some of them, I had the folder to easily replace them. In doing a recent uninstall of some unneeded software, I discovered I had never returned the file to the hard drive. In checking into it, I saw that there is now another file in the library folder titled preferences, but it does not have nearly the amount of items in it that the old one I saved does. The new one has only 14 items and the saved one has 132. How many items are in this file on average. From looking at the larger file on my desktop, it seems that most of these things are being used. Should I put this file and its contents back into the new file? I thought about temporarily putting it into the trash and then trying to operate my computer as noraml and seeing if I have any trouble, thus indicatating that these files are still necessary. Anyone have any suggestions?

Preference files are recreated by Mac OS X or by the particular application in question upon a restart or reopening of the application. If everything is working fine, there is no need to restore the preferences to their original location. Sometimes people want to avoid losing preferences for apps that they have worked with a lot and have established lots of settings that they don't want to reproduce (browsers, Mail, etc.). You can just keep the preferences folder around somewhere if you wish, but since it is just sitting on your desktop, it is performing no function and the preferences within are not being used. Your comuter is working just fine with the new preferences that were created to replace those old ones.

    Steve M.

  • Restart iPod lose preferences

    Hi,
my ipod frozen and I have to restart, but problem is when restart my iPod so all preferences is losed. I try make restore, then restart and preferneces losed again. Do you know why after restart my iPod losed preferences?
    Thanks Jan
My iPod is iPod Photo with 40GB

A restore will lose the preferences because you are returning the iPod to it's factory default settings.
With a reset Apple says this: "When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on."
So I guess it depends on what settings you are losing.

  • I do not have the money to buy a new computer and wish not to be vulnerable using your latest version of Firefox. I want to stay with the previous version.

I saw a previous question from a windows user, but it seemed like it was from a very long time ago (talking about the 3.x.x editions), and all the links on that thread seemed to only have updates of 3. I just want to stay with the version of Firefox before this latest update (10/30/12) that say 16.0.2 doesn't work well with my older Mac OSX. Can you provide me a link to reinstall that, and forgive my ignorance, but let me know exactly what I need to do to avoid losing preferences and bookmarks and such? Thanks very much.

All Firefox 16 versions still work with your OS X 10.5 operating system, but that is the last version that will work.<br />
Firefox 17 will require OS X 10.6 and later.
You can see the Firefox 17 (currently in beta) system requirements here:
