Mmmmmkay, whats going on?

Question

first time posting on here, as i guess with most people they dont know this place exists until a problem arises....
so anyway a couple of days ago i came back from work to start skyping/playing games with friends and notice my connection is worse than when i had 512k living in the sticks!
i've been with BT for around 6 months now maybe a bit more and have had reasonably good connection speed, well enough to allow me to skype and play games and stream vieos without any problems, but over these past couple of days the maximum connection i am able to get is 256kbps, which is just plain retarded. even since it was first installed i was getting speeds from 4mbps up to well over 5mbps.
i've tried changing filters, rebooting the router (lots of times), changing phone sockets and quite simply just waiting to get online again.
just strikes me how it can go from pretty good net, to an absolute snail pace. i've looked at some of the router numbers and have noticed a line attenuation of 42.8 dB down and 23.5 dB up. do these numbers seem a tad high, well the down part anyway?
any info would be greatly appreciated as im quite frankly fed up with waiting to get back online again.

quick reply, nice!
just find it strange how literally over a day its gone from steady 4mbps connections down to a measly 256kbps.
cant paste a speedtest result as i closed the window after it finished before i read your reply. need to wait another hour before i can run it again
