MMS over WiFi

I understand to send MMS (pictures/group messages) you need a data plan and have to be connected to the mobile network.  However, whenever I am at home or work, and I happened to be connected to the local WiFi network, I am unable to send group messages, pictures or anything that's classified as MMS.  When I hit send, all I see is the picture or message labelled as "sending."  It eventually times out, and I get an notification that it has failed.  However, whenever I restart my phone or take myself off WiFi, the MMS is able to send.
Anybody else having this issue?  I shouldn't have to take myself off WiFi or reboot my phone to send MMS....
Thanks,

  • MMS over WiFi not working after Sense 6 Update

A week ago Monday, the Sense 6 update hit my phone.  Once loaded, I could no longer send MMS over WiFi, stream Google Play Music over WiFi, access my content on Google Play Books, or back up my pics to Google Cloud over WiFi.  After several days of e-mails back and forth with HTC, it was determined that I had to perform a Hard Reset and lose all my information.  This after clearing the cache, re-booting, various Safe Mode re-boots, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally gave in and performed the hard reset.  Now, the only thing NOT working is MMS over WiFi.  I've tried other WiFi networks and still no MMS functionality.  After about 10 minutes, I get a red triangle next to the message and an error notification, "Generic Network Failure."
This is going to start costing me money.  Like so many of us, I no longer have unlimited data.  Now, every time I want to send an MMS, I have to use my data plan.  Not cool.  I'm hoping that someone sees this and is working on the problem.  I love my HTC One (M7), I really do.  But, we're talking basic smart phone functionality.  Without it, I'll be looking for another phone, and perhaps even another carrier.  I'd prefer not to do that, but so be it.  Please, Verizon, a little help?
For what it's worth, the MMS does this first.  Notice the little MMS icon with the clock lower right...it just hangs there first...and sorry about the shoe pic.
Next, it does the Red Triangle thing...
And that's all I know.  Perhaps someone here, or a kindly VZW employee will see this and take pity.  Thanks!

I am having the exact same issue with my HTC one, which started immediately after updating to sense 6. Very annoying since I do not have unlimited mobile data plan, so I have to manually turn mobile data on each time I want to send or receive mms texts, including texts with multiple recipients. Did not have this issue before the update. Love this phone, my very first smartphone. But it is hard to believe that I was able to send pics over text with my old flip phone with no data plan. And now I can't with the HTC. I just can't have the mobile data on at all Times. It has become very inconvenient ever since the upgrade. Wish I had never done sense 6.

  • I cannot receive MMS over WiFi- anyone else struggling? (2nd post)

    Original post:
I cannot receive MMS over WiFi- anyone else struggling?
Apparently, it's not the settings. Tech told me I need to just return the phone b/c they don't have a clue what's wrong with it. They've done everything they can on their end and nothing works. I posted about this earlier just before I spoke to advanced tech support and thought they'd fixed the issue, but it's not fixed.
If someone finds a fix for this, please post it. As of now, my plan is to return the phone to the store tomorrow.

UPDATE- A tech-savvy friend took a look at my phone this evening at work and couldn't fix the problem. He's a former tech support employee for another major wireless provider. He said his best guess is the problem is somewhere in the APN settings. It seems like LG's default settings are fighting (for lack of a better word) with Verizon's settings. He couldn't fix the problem and ended up suggesting I download the texting app "Textra" because it's one where the settings allow you to change the APN.
I was dubious because we've already tried changing the texting program to the two others that come on the phone and neither worked. But neither allow you to edit or add to the APN settings either.
I'm not sure how it is on anyone else's LG G3, but mine doesn't allow you to change the APN settings at all. On every single walk-through I've found for setting up MMS, I've followed it to the letter right up until it says, "Click the 'add' button in the upper right corner..." because that isn't an option on my phone. I imagine it's prob the same way for many others as well. I don't know if it's just on Verizon or if it's a product-wide problem.
My tech friend said the only way I can change the APN settings on my own (without speaking to Verizon's tech folks again) would be to "jail break" the phone first, which I really don't want to do.
I downloaded Textra and was surprised to find that it comes with a check-box for "MMS WiFi fix" under the setting "go here if MMS isn't working."  I clicked the appropriate boxes and sent myself a MMS using my husband's phone. I also asked a friend who has another provider to text me a test pic. Textra turned off WiFi, downloaded both pix, and then turned WiFi back on... exactly the way the phone's default settings should behave. It took a minute or so longer than a typical text but I'm okay with that so long as pix come through.
I've been fighting this issue for nearly 2 weeks now. I've spoken to 7 different people at Verizon as well as several friends who are extremely knowledgeable regarding cell phone OS (KitKat in particular), and this is the only thing that has actually worked. I'm going to give it 24 hours though before I say the problem is truly "fixed."
    Hope this works!! (crosses fingers)

  • Picture message/MMS over WIFI???

The Only carrier known to support MMS over wifi is T-mobile. I am hopping that other carriers will adopt this policy as in my opinion advertising unlimited picture messaging and then charging for data usage is misleading.

I am also having trouble sending picture messages. Are you able to send them when you are not using wifi?
According to everything I have read, picture messages/MMS go through the 3G service, not wifi. What I did was turn off wifi when I was troubleshooting to make sure I had 3G service. With 3G and 3 bars signal the pic txt would go to 90% and hang until it failed to send. My husband, sitting next to me with his Fascinate (3 bars signal also) was sending picture texts no problem.
I am finding that my picture texts only go thru when I have 4 bars... and the quality of the picture received on the other end is horrible and grainy. Not even worth it.

  • I have an HTC Droid DNA and I live in a pit - it takes 30 min to download MMS picture message. Is there a way I can download MMS over WiFi?

I have really bad reception at my house, and I want to be able to download MMS picture messages over WiFi. How do I do that?

How is service once you leave your home?
    - Not any different. I have to drive a block or two to be able to send MMS messages with no hassle.
Are you aware of any resolution tickets filed to investigate issue?
    - No
    What's your zip code?

  • Why don't I get MMS over wifi?

I don't know if this is a carrier issue (Simple Mobile) or a Firefox OS issue, but I can only receive MMS using my data plan. If I'm connected to a wireless netowrk/wifi hotspot, I do not receive MMS messages (in the case of group texts) or I get the message but cannot download the attached photo without turning wifi off and using the SIM card data.
There are two situations that I'm dealing with. First, when iphone users (and maybe others? Androids don't seem to do this) send an SMS message to multiple recipients, it comes as an MMS. If I'm home and connected to wifi I don't get the message or any indication that a message was sent. I leave the house (and the wifi network) and suddenly get a bunch of messages that are hours old.
Second, if anyone sends me a text with a photo attached, I get the text portion and then it says it is "Downloading ..." but the photo won't actually download until I turn wireless off.
SMS messages come through just fine.
I believe that I was able to get MMS via wifi at some point when I first got the phone but I'm not actually sure of that.

I was always able to recieve photos in SMS messages on my Android phone on Sprint. On my FirefoxOS phone on Simple, I cannot. I did contact Simple Mobile. This is their reply:
    > Upon further review of your account, our system shows that it is provisioned in our system. Program your APN (Access Point Name) Settings for your Internet and Multimedia/Picture messaging to work using the following values:
    >
    > • APN Name: SIMPLE MOBILE
    > • APN: simple
    > • MMS APN: simple
    > • MMSC: http://smpl.mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
    >
    > Please be advised that updating the APN settings of the phone does not guarantee that MMS (Multimedia/Picture Messaging) will work. MMS is dependent upon your phone model's limitations.
Those are the settings I already had. Per Ralph, I tried [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1046517#c12 adding MMS Port and Proxy settings]: under Settings > Cellular and Data > Message Settings I added
    > mms proxy: 216.155.165.50
    > mms port: 8080
I am still not able to send or recieve photos while connected to wifi.

  • Since Apple already has a SMS/MMS app for the iPhone, which can be used over WiFi, can the same app be installed on the iPad 2?

I have an iPhone 3GS, and realized I do most of my SMS/MMS messaging at home, when connected to my WiFi. Then I began to think, if I'm using the messaging app over WiFi, can the SAME app (which, personally I like much better than the third party apps) be installed on the iPad 2 (which I'm still waiting from back order)?

    Incorrect.
SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.
"Dumb" phones or phones not in the smart category that don't have internet access in any shape, form, or fashion can exchange SMS/MMS.
Since SMS/MMS (a poor man's email with cell phones since it is very limited) is a cash cow for carriers and very profitable, why wouldn't cell phone carriers be interested in including SMS/MMS as an additional option (and of course at an additional expense) with a data plan only for the iPad? They certainly are interested in it but they can't since SMS/MMS is exchanged over the same network as calls.
Get me the IPAD SMS app
Take your whining someplace else. The self-entitlement displayed here by some is laughable.

  • Cant send MMS over 3G when connected to WiFi

    In australia with Virgin.
    3GS, latest OS
    MMS setting on.
I cannot send an MMS over 3G if the phone is connected to a WiFi network. Have to turn off WiFi to send MMS. Regular text messages fine, but if i try to send pics, it hangs then get the red exclamation that the message could not be sent.

when i was running 4.3.x on my iphone 4 i noticed that from time to time the wifi would actually mysteriously disconnect and my iphone 4 would not try to reconnect just continue to do whatever it was doing, like watching videos on 3g gobbling up my data plan. it became so frequent i turned off cellular data entirely. since i went to ios 5 i have not seen this problem come back. even on wifi if you turn off cellular data you don't get visual voice mail!! hmm
maybe if see a genius they might be able to explain what is going on
i complained to at&t and they gave me a one time credit and removed the overage charges on my account

  • Messages+ not working over WiFi

One of the main reasons I switched back to Verizon and off of the iPhone is because my dad told me that if I use the Verizon Messages app (also known as Messages+) I can text him over WiFi. This was really attractive to me because I live in an area where I generally have NO service. (occasionally one bar now that I switched to Verizon. Thank the lord). This is not the case. My messages do not send over WiFi. If I don't  have one bar of service, nothing gets in or out. Why? Why? Why? The information about Messages+ says it operates using WiFi. Is there any extra step I need to do? I am so frustrated that I can no longer text my husband throughout the day. I'm forced to use Facebook Messenger which is incredibly annoying. At least when I had my iPhone (which I hated) I could use iMessages to text iPhone users.

IHateMyTreo I certainly want to check into this for you. What kind of device are you using? Are you getting an error message when you try to send a text out? Message  has a lot of nice options. You are also able to read and reply to texts over wifi on your computer or tablet too! Just log into your My Verizon and click on Messages. You will be able to read and reply to your texts from there as well as on your phone. I have Message  myself and texting over wifi should not be a problem though Picture and MMS messages may need to be able to send over our network instead.

  • Wireless sync option not available on Itunes 10.5.  After updating my iphone to IOS 5, the "sync over wifi" option is not being displayed in itunes.

hi, I managed to update both Itunes and my ios to the latest versions (10.5 and 5 respectively).  I'm unable to see the "Sync over wifi" option in itunes.  Can anyone help?

Maybe that's why I got lucky?  I have 10.7.2.  I have to tell you howeer that I did not check any check box in settings on the Notebook to enable Wifi sync, or in iTunes on the notebook.  I did have options when setting up the iPad and I selected sync with computer rather than back up to cloud.   Maybe that is another difference?  I feel feel fortunate that as I type this my iPad is syncing over wifi and you're all having trouble.
Just to confirm I have iTunes 10.5  MacOSX 10.7.2 and iOS5 installed on the iPad.  I'm going to dive in and do the phone now too.  I will report any troubles, or pay more careful attention when the iCloud settings and set up come on the screen.  Maybe I did something else I don't remember.

  • Exchange Emails over WiFi

For the last 3 days or so, I'm not able to get my exchange emails over wifi on my mac and iPhone 5 (mail app). The home wifi is working just fine as i'm able to connect and get all the other mails from gmail and hotmail but when it comes to my exchange account, I get an error 'can't connect due to network error'.
Although, I'm able to get my exchange emails over cellular data connection both on my mac and iPhone. Please suggest.

    Hi Razmee,
Thanks for the reply. I've tried that but my IT guys are a nocturnal bunch of grumps. It's not officially a work appliance, therefore not officially their problem. The fact I spend my own dollars to improve my efficiency and contactability is lost on them.
    Cheers

  • Can someone help me with backing up my iphone over wifi then restoring it?

basically i wanted to download the new ios 8 on my iphone 5c, i did not have enough memory and was unable to get onto a laptop/pc. i went onto settings>icloud>storage&backup>back up over wifi. i enable back up over wifi so when connected to wifi it will automatically back up, anyway after enabling this i pressed back up now and it backed my iphone up. i then started to delete apps and PHOTOS to get enough space, i then was able to get onto a laptop and tried to restore my iphone but it would not let me . it said i had to download ios 8 first then it would restore my device so i tried this and it will not download the new update, i still dont have enough memory to download the update but i do not want to delete more photos if i will be un able to get them back.
basically if i delete more photos to make enough space for ios 8, and then restore my iphone will i get all of the photos, apps and games i had before i started to delete them (baring in mind i did back up my iphone over wifi)
please help getting very worried over this, thanks

  • IPad 3 not showing up in iTunes (Win7_64) over WiFi

I have an iPad 3 I'm trying to sync over my WLAN.  It's running iOS 7.1 and connecting to iTunes 11.2.2.3 on Windows 7 64-bit.  Upon launching iTunes, the device will appear in the left navigation pane after about 10 seconds, and will stay there (greyed out with a spinning progress wheel) for about 15-20 seconds before it disappears.  I am never able to display the status or contents of the device over a wireless connection.
-USB connections do work and I am able to manage, browse, update and sync the device.
-I have tried connecting over USB and checking/unchecking the "Sync over WiFi" box.  That has not solved the problem.
-I have tried establishing custom inbound and outbound Windows Firewall rules to allow all traffic to all programs and ports  from the iPad's internal IP (10.10.10.18 on a /8 network), but that hasn't fixed the problem.
-AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe, AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, iCloudServices.exe, iPodService.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, iTunes.exe and mDNSResponder.exe are all running at the time of attempted (and failed) sync.
-Wireless syncing worked properly while on iOS 5.  Really regretting updating to iOS 7 right now.  Lesson learned, unlikely to ever update again.
I've tried a number of solutions but as I cannot recall 100% of what I've already tried, I am willing to start at square one to get this resolved.  For what it's worth, I'm a 14-year IT professional so you can talk to me about pinging, firewall rules, subnets (iPad and PC running iTunes are on the same subnet), protocols and ports and I will know what you're talking about.  Hope that helps speed things along.
Any assistance you can render would be most appreciated.

    Wireless Sync
To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable.
Click the Device button in the upper-right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button first.)
If you don't see your device, choose View > Hide Sidebar.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi."
When the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it.
The iOS device will sync automatically when the following conditions are true:
    The iOS device is charging.
iTunes is open on the computer.
The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
While the iOS device is in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.

  • 320N Freezes when trying to transfer data over wifi

I have the 320N and I am very frusterated.  I would just take it back, but I bought it brand new on Amazon.com, meaning I will have to pay shipping because I threw out the box and the return shipping form for RMA's!  I don't even know if Amazon will take it back without that paperwork, but anyway here's the issue...
I don't have any N cards yet, but I upgraded to this router because my home internet service is faster than what my older WRT-54g could route.  This new router does route and I can now achieve the rated speeds of my ISP (50/10 mbps).
I can transfer large files 6+ GB WIRED between any of the LAN ports on this device.  However if I try to transfer much data over wifi, the router will simply stop working.  The lights on the front work fine, they blink like there is activity, and the power LED is solid, but it won't pass traffic and the wifi SSID dissapears.  I run a constant ping to the router (ping -t 192.168.1.1) and I get <1ms replies.  On my laptop I initiate a download of a 1GB file which is shared in my windows 7 homegroup.  Within a minute or two the constant ping to the router starts timing out.  Internet access to anything (wired or wireless) instantly ceases.  New introduced devices will not grab a DHCP address.  Existing PC's whom already have their DHCP address can talk to each other only if wired.  The wireless transmitter stops broadcasting the network and devices no longer see it on the airwaves.  The only way to fix it is to power cycle it.
It doesn't even have to be a large file over wifi to transfer.  Just now as I'm typing this post I noticed the constant ping on my other monitor started timing out.  I power cycled the router in time for me to submit this post.  In fact I had to do it three times in the time it took me to write this post.  This is the most frustrating experience I've had with any wifi ap/router, and I play with Cisco gear at work that run real IOS.
Here's what I tried so far.
Reset factory defaults by holding in the rear reset button for over 30 seconds.
I can confirm this resets the defaults as the password and all other settings are back to default.
I tried WPA2 Personal.  I tried WPA.  Router still freezes.
I tried it with just the default settings.  Router still freezes.
I've reset the router numerous times.  Still freezes.
Power cycle it for more than a minute.  Still freezes.
Reflash it with Linksys's latest firmware.  Still freezes.
What do I do next?  I have a feeling it's the same problem as in a lot of the HP Printer firmware boards.  That problem is poor solder joints on the BGA processor connection.  To fix that you put the formatter board in an oven at 400 degrees for 5 to 8 minutes.  After that time you just let it cool to room temperature.  The oven heats the poor solder joints enough so that it reseats and gets a better connection.  There are hundreds of posts of success on this.  I also hear that the solder connection problem exists for many of the older revision Xbox 360 game consoles causing the infamous "Red Ring of Death".
So do I try to fight with Amazon to take this back and eat the shipping?
Do I void my warranty, open the device up and put the board in the oven?
Do I buy another router from a closer store, but then put this one in the box and take it back?
Do I just cut my losses?
Do I just use this as a wired router (disable Wifi) and hook up my WRT-54g and make that act as just an access point?
    Thanks for the advice.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok I've had my replacement 320N for almost 1 full week now, and while at first it was fine, come Sunday it appears to freeze during heavy transfers.  I was streaming an HD movie to the laptop connected to the TV.  3/4ths of the way through the movie it started skipping.  What do you know, the whole network was down.  No internet or anything.  Power cycle the router and everything was back up.  Needless to say, I finished the movie through the wired connection.  The next day I tried copying 8GB of data wirelessly.  The SSID vanished 1/3rd of the way in during the transfer.
What is wrong with this stuff?  Linksys doesn't make things like they used to.  This 320N is so cheaply made I don't think I could recommend it to anyone.  I might see if I can send this back to Amazon and get a Netgear.

  • I am trying to download iOS 5.1 on my iPhone and iPad. Both times it tries connecting to the software update server and just hangs there. I've tried doing both over wifi and get error message. What do I do?

I cannot download the ios 5.1. I'v tried doing it through itunes after downloading the latest itunes. It says that my phone and ipad both have new updates and tries to coonect to update software server. That is where it hangs up and just keeps trying to connect but never does. Then when I try to update my devices over wifi, it tries and thens gives me a download failed message after a few minutes. What do I do?

This has solved loads of people who have this issue and have used an alternate DNS setting.  Below are instructions for both iPhone OTA and on you Mac
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try an OTA (over the air update)
    Change DNS Servers
    Settings -> Wi-Fi
Click the blue arrow on your connected network
Delete everything in DNS and replace it with 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Try again
If this works, you will probably want to remove the WiFi network using "Forget This Network" and then reconnect to it to get your original DNS servers back. Alternatively, make a note of the original DNS servers before deleting them and replace it after you are done.
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try through iTunes
    On your Mac
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.
Click DNS, and then click Add at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.
    You can use OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    or
You can Google Public DNS if you want
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
I have actually repointed my routers DNS so all my devices now point to OpenDNS servers
