Mobile Backups on mac taking up 1/3 of disk space

Hello,
So I was just cleaning up my mac. I went to 'about this mac' under the apple on finder, and went to storage. It says that backups are taking up 145.16GB of disk space. What does it mean by backups? Can I get rid of them? I do have time machine set up, but I dont get why it is taking up so much space.
Thanks for your help!!
Have macbook pro 2012 running OSX 10.10

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

Hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can I remove itunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space?...and then run it from the hard drive instead of the mac, even if the mac no longer has space to accomodate the size of the library?

    Yes.
Copy your music iTunes Library folder to the external drive and change the Advanced settings in iTunes to point to this new location.
Once you're happy with these changes you can delete the same Library from your User account to free up space on the internal drive.

  • If photos are in more than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?  is there a way to eliminate all duplicates without doing it one by one?

If photos are inmore than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?
Is there a way to eliminate duplicates without doing it one by one?

A photo exists in only one event.  However, it can be in multiple albums, slideshows, books, etc. without taking up any additional disk space.
If you truly have duplicates in iPhoto, not as viewed via the Finder  you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

When doing catalog backup get message " your system is low on disk space, and elements organizer cannot perform the operation.  If create a catalog with 20 pictures backup works OK.  backing up to a 1TB external drive.  Have 16705 pictures in catalog.  Total disk space for pictures is 192 MB.  Why am I getting message?

Do you really mean MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) ?
Even if its GB, the free space may be enough, depending on your files size, especially with videos or raw files.
When you start the backup process, it first shows you the total size of the catalog.

  • Default partitions taking up large amount of disk space

While investigating in Disk Management after having my Yoga 11s laptop for a few months, I noticed a bunch of partitions that are taking up a large portion of space on my computer. Which brought up a bunch of questions (related to the screenshot below):
What are the EFI System Partition and OEM Partitions?
Does the recovery partition work with that OneKey Recovery?
What does OneKey actually supposed to back up? Both the core OS files and all of the personal files/data?
Why are there two recovery partitions listed?
If the other 4 partitions are needed/used why are they all 100% free space.
Should I be storing personal files on the D: primary partition or C: partition?
The allocation of file space doesn't seem to line up with Lenovo's description here (which also mentions only 3 partitions, not 6): http://download.lenovo.com/express/HT062547.html
I just purchased a 2TB external drive and planned to partition it into two 1TB partitions and use one for backup and one for storage. In this case, do I need such a large recovery parition, or any at all on my computer?
I had planned on using the Windows 8.1 native File History for backups on the external. OneKey seems to be more of a manual backup process, but I'm trying to figure out the best why to backup both my own personal files and the system files themselves. What's the best why to set that up?
    See screenshot:
    Thank you for the help!

Thanks, I also found this article after some digging that explains the default partitions: http://www.lionhack.com/2013/12/25/lenovo-yoga-2-pro-partitions/
What's the reasoning behind Lenovo creating the separate C and D drives?

  • New mac mini, why so much hard disk space used

    Hi All
Just bought a new Mac Mini, 1.4 with the 80gb disk,
After powering up and setting up etc, i noticed that over 10gb of the 80gb hard disk was already used out of the box!!!
How come all that disk space is used, im sure the OS doesnt need that amount of room? I have found a folder of about 1.2gb with a load of garage band samples and loops in, but where is the rest hiding???? Seems a whole waste of space to me??
    Thanks

You have heard correctly, most Mac software, including GarageBand, can be deleted by moving the application (or whole folder if it's in one) to the Trash & emptying the Trash. Some programs may install some support files, but usually not until they are run for the first time. Those few programs that do scatter bits around (can you say Microsoft?) should come with an uninstaller.
There are freeware/shareware programs to remove unneeded language files. DeLocalizer & Monolingual come to mind.
But, since you are setting this Mac mini up from scratch, you might want to do what I do with a new Mac. I erase & reinstall the OS & bundled software from the CD/DVDs that come with it, doing a custom install of both so that I get only what I want. For me, this was important because I don't need any additional printer drivers & I already had full versions of Office & iWork to install.

  • What is the "Other" taking up all my iPod disk space?

I have the 80GB Video iPod. I thought I had plenty of free space judging just by how little room the music and videos were taking up, but then I noticed that a large percentage of the remaining space was actually marked as "other" on the colored bar in iTunes rather than "Free Space". But I have no idea what all that "Other" is. I'm talking about 35.7GB of "Other", while my 3.3days of Audio and 17.5 hours of video is taking up less than half of that.
I go through the different tabs in iTunes to see what's on my iPod, but it seems like it would all fall under either music or video (I had about 20 photos, but I stopped synching those up until I solve this mystery). What on earth could the "Other" be? As far as I know, that's all I've loaded on this thing is music and videos. I want to reclaim that space!

I have the same issue. I know a restore will fix it, but I want to know what is actually taking up that space and why.
Any ideas why gigs of space are taken up by "other", gigs of space which could be used for media?
Apple, any answers or a fix here?

  • Problem with Photoshop CS5. Memory and Hard disk space Mac OSX

Just got CS5 Master Suite.  Whenever I open photoshop it takes a ton of memory 1 gig +. When I open  files it takes up more and more until it takes up all my memory and hard  disk space. I open a simple multi layered file that is 25 megs in size  to work on it. Before I know it photoshop is taking 20gigs+ of my hard  disk space along with 3+ gigs of system memory. Is there a memory  problem in photoshop cs5?
    Thanks!
    Joseph
    UPDATE:
So I just opened the 25 meg file  in photoshop cs5 and watched my free space on my hard drive go down 8  gigs the instant I opened it. It went from 27 gigs of freespace to 19  instantly. As I open more files and close others it works till my harddrive goes to zero space... stalls the computer big time. Only way to correct it is to quit photoshop cs5 and wait a few minutes for the space to return... and it takes a few minutes for it all to return.
I am running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6., 4 gigs of ram on board.

  • I disabled mobile backups but Backups still take up 36 Gb.

I dont understand how this is the case as my laptop is a week old and I only have about 4 gb of media on it. How could it possibly be using 36 Gb for backups! this is frustrating as I only have 120 Gb SSD!
Does anyone know what could be taking up 36Gb of space?
I have already entered in the command sudo tmutil disablelocal and I think it has worked as there is no mention of mobile backups in time machine preferences.
    Thanks!

Thanks! The link is very helpful and I disabled the snapshots through the sudo command. I think I will sleep on it and see if they disappear overnight, and then restart my Mac when I wake up. Right now, the bar has shifted but everything has gone wacko. Backups are at zero kb but somehow the mysterious "other" section has doubled to 128 GB. Videos and music also shifted in size although I had not modified them at all. The link was great and I sure hope that was the fix. Thanks for the help so far. Here is the bar:

  • Problems with relocating mobile sync folder - mac

    Hi
This is directed solely towards mac users. I know that there is a similar thread which got somewhat swamped by windows users
Currently i have a intel core duo mac mini running SL with a LaCie external hard drive and I want to move my iPad back up the LaCie disk. Using the directions from various forum's I've done the folowingusing symbolic links to redirect the back up for mobile sync to my external hard drive
Copied and pasted the backup folder onto the external drive under the iTunes folder
Renamed the orginal back up folder as backup1
The command that i put in terminal was as follows
    ln -s /Volumes/LaCie\Disk/iTunes\1/Backup Users/iain.christie/Library/Application\Support/MobileSync/Backup
All went well, a link appeared in the mobile sync folder on the C Drive. However when I went to do a back up I got the message that there was not enough space on the disk ( the iPad is 64gb, available disk space is 120 gb). Checking the back up folder on the external drive, a backup does seem to have been attempted, so the link did seem to be redirecting from the C Drive
    Can anyone help?
One other thing, the mobile sync folder does not appear to be under the root directory and I had to go under user profile to find it. Would that have any bearing
    Appreciate any advice

i have exactly the same problem, also iphone 5 and ios 8.1.3. it extremely irritating.

  • Finder not taking into account local backups when reporting free disk space

Time Machine in Lion (10.7.2) stores local backups of files on your laptop's hard drive when it is not connected to an external Time Machine backup drive. See this article for more information.
If you click on the Apple in the top-left corner of your screen and choose About This Mac > More Info > Storage, you will see exactly how much space your local "Backups" are taking (along with other useful info about how your hard drive space is being used).
Interestingly, the amount of free HD space listed there differes from the amount of free space Finder says is available (when you choose View > Show Status Bar to display it). The amount that it differs is exactly the same as the amount of the local "Backups." So, it appears that Finder is not taking those local Backus into account when it displays free disk space.
So, Finder is telling me I have almost 100 gigs MORE free space than I actually have. I would prefer Finder to show me how much space I have AFTER the local Backups are taken into account.

The article that you linked to gives the rationale for this:
Note: You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed.

  • Search a backup made with Backup for Mac

I made several backups of old e-mail files using Backup for Mac (Mobile Me v.3.2.) Is there a way to search for specific e-mails within that file?

No. Mobile Me disappeared several years ago along with that backup software. If you have the old software and can still run it, then you also can use it to restore from an old backup file made with the software.
