Mobile home directory issues on updated clients

As I am testing out leopard server, I found that virtually every service isn't quite ready for prime time. That is at least in the advanced mode, which is strange as it that was the only mode the old server versions came in.
I am wondering if anyone has been able to do the following (in advanced mode only):
1. In WGM, set the mobility preference background sync of a user to an interval greater than 1 hour (let's say every 4 hours).
Then use a client (maybe even upgraded from Tiger)and sync in that same interval.
All the clients I have tested still sync to the previously set 1 hour intervals and when going into the mobility settings (System Preferences: Accounts: Mobile Account: Settings), all other intervals are grayed out. In WGM, mobility settings are set to merge with clients.
2. Too bad that the Directory Utility auto discovery tool doesn't work for advanced mode servers, so it has to added manually, but I have not been able to get SSL to work. Kerberos works fine and it's all I need but I still like the client configured for SSL.
Always comes up saying the the server doesn't support directory connections via SSL. SSL however is configured on LDAP (via self-signed cert) and no firewall setting is in the way. Or so I believe as the leopard client firewall functionality is a bit of a mystery to me.
Sorry about my rants; I am actually quite excited about several of the new server features as they address many longstanding shortcomings. At least it looks like 10.5.1 is on its way. Thanks!

The CN attribute (Common Name) of the SSL certificate you use in LDAP must be equal to the fully qualified domain name of the server, in order for SSL to work.
If that isn't the problem, the logs may offer more information, especially if you increase the verbosity of slapd logs...

  • Leopard Client Tiger server mobile home directory not working... hmmm

Mobile home directory is not working for my leopard clients with my tiger server.
I can log in via the Apple server account that is set for mobile.
On my tiger clients it prompts me to confirm my mobile account on log in and everything works fine if i unplug the network cable.
on my leopard clients no prompt at log in. so i go to account under system prefs and see that the account says mobile..and i click on make mobile account in the account pane in system prefs says will reboot and make account.. prompts for password for mobile account i put it in and then it says there was an error in making mobile account and then it takes me back to the main log in window.
every client i have on leopard does this...
    am i missing something?
    thanks in advance,
    Jesse

Tiger server can control mobile account syncing and other features present on Tiger clients.

  • Mobile Home Directory: Setting a relative location for various sub-nets

    Question Summary:
    1) Is it possible to define a home directory for mobile account users that is relative to the host's subnet?
    2) How does one accomplish #1 if possible?
    Details
    Setup
Users access hosts on three LAN networks connected through the WAN via Branch-Office VPN connections (persistant VPN tunnels that connect our LANs)
If User1 from LAN1 travels to LAN2, User1 has difficulty working, because the mobile account definition points to a host on LAN1 for HomeDirectory syncing, so all files are synced across a slow (5Mb/s) connection shared by all other users.  For some users (The CEO, for example), this sync entails transferring Gigs of personal data, so the Mobile Sync across the VPN literally takes several days, if it completes at all.
My ideal setup would allow User1 from LAN1 to access a host at a relative location as apposed to an absolute location.  In other words, if LAN1 has the home folder at 192.168.76.23:/HomeFolders/User1, then when User1 moves to LAN2, the HomeFolder becomes 192.168.78.23:/HomeFolders/User1. Regardless the subnet, the User account would be defined in such a way that the HomeFolder would be sought at 192.168.X.23:/HomeFolders/shortUserId
These home folders between the hosts 192.168.76.23 and 192.168.78.23 on LAN1 and LAN2, respectively, could be kept in sync during off hours so that at the beginning of each shift, all files are in all three locations ready for local use, fast access, and more importantly, fast home-syncing during the work day.
    Equipment
OS X Yosemite running on various iMac and MacBook hardware configurations.
OS X Server 4 running OD replicas and local DNS's on each LAN.
Ample space for redundant data storage on all networks.
    Question
How do I define a HomeDirectory as a relative location to the Mobile Account Users host machine or host machine IP address?
Alternatively, is there a way that I can define a HomeDirectory using a Fully Qualified Domain Name so that I can use the local DNS server to force the redirect?
    Previously Tried Idea(s)
Using the same Bonjour Computer Name
On one test, I tried to trick the system by setting the name of the HomeDirectory computer to the same name on all networks. The thought behind this is that, when looking at the HomeDirectory path, the address is defined by the computer name, so if the local computer name matches, the system will automatically point to the host that is on the current LAN, as apposed to the host of the same name on the previous LAN.
This failed due to the fact that the system providing the HomeDirectory storage is the same system that is providing OD replica services, and OD replication requires that each system have a unique name.

    Hi,
Yes my home directory is set
    more /etc/passwd
    sfsys1d:x:301:201:sys1 dev sftp user:/interfaces/dev/system1:/usr/bin/csh
when i log in they go to this directory, through a shell and through ftp ( haven't checked sftp yet)
However i can still go up directories and see what is in the directories above
the permissions are set as below
    drwx------   3 root
    sshusers
    3 Sep  6 08:38 interfaces
    drwx--x---   3 root
    sshusers
    3 Sep  6 15:49 dev
    drwxr-----   5 sfsys1d sshusers
    7 Sep 19 14:52 system1
I have tried various other permission 700, 710, 740 etc and they all give different results but not the correct one.
The best I have managed to get so far is that they cannot list the files in the other directories, however if they know the names they can still go to them,  this also didn;t work in the windows ftp client, as it just showed the file/dirs anyway.
    Thanks
    Kerry

  • Home Directory on server or client?

I work for an architects firm (about a dozen people) and we currently keep user accounts/home directories on individual machines, although we have a server. What are the advantages, besides being able to log into your account from any machine, in keeping the home directories/user accounts on the server?
And what are the disadvantages? And what about laptop users?
Or should I be looking at mobile home directories, in which case I'd ask the same relative questions as above?

We are an architecture firm also, with a total of 8 employes.
We have network home directories set up (I did not set it up) but have had no problems. We do not have Portable home directories setup, as there is no need. Our boss is the only one that uses a laptop and no need to work from home. It is very handy to have user accounts available at any machine, as there are sometimes when we need to get some repair done on a tower, we just pull an old one out of storage, or move to an empty desk. When we get a new computer, I just image it with our base image, and it s in production in an hour or so.
The main reason for the dir. on the server is due to backups. We nightly backup our entire server to firewire drive then rotate weekly. This gets all user information, email, as well as all of our working data.
As for "intense server usage" our server is a G4 PPC MDD 1.25 Ghz with 1.25 GB of ram running Server 10.4.7. During the day, there area anywhere from 4-7 clients connected to the server, but our CPU stays well under 20%. It only peaks during backups, @ night.
Services running are :AFP, DHCP, NetBoot, NFS, OpenDirectory (Master), and VPN.
We have also setup VPN, so we can work from home, or admin remotely.
Our main files used are Vectorworks files, ranging from 10-50 MB, but some Photoshop files that get large.
Anyway, that is my experience, take what you want. I was thrown into the sysadmin after coming on out of Architecture school, and it is a balancing act to keep the system working while keeping my billable hours high.

  • Roaming home directory issue

We are looking to employ roaming home directories on our client machines. In our tests, the ~/Library folder takes up gigabytes of space. Currently our users are allowed 1gb of storage on our Redhat Servers. Does anyone know the minimum disk space requirement for a roaming home directory?
    Thank you.

Roaming Profiles was the term used to describe this feature for Windows PCs but the usual term for Macs is 'Network Home Directories'.
With regards to size if the user is using Apple Mail as the email client then this program stores copies of all the emails in the Library folder - specifically ~/Library/Mail the size of this folder depends on the size of the users email accounts and whether they are also using local folders in Apple Mail to store emails as well. In our company this can be many gigabytes each.
The Library folder also normally stores caches of various files including web-browser caches. This also can be a significant amount of space. It is possible to setup an automated folder redirection to instead store both temporary files and cache files locally with the consequence that they are automatically deleted when the user logs out. This used to be configured using Workgroup Manager and Managed Preferences but would these days be better done using Profile Manager or a similar tool. You might want to read this thread for more information about this - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6467644
If the user is using Microsoft Outlook for Mac, then this normally stores its emails in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/ again the size depends on how much email the user has.

  • Mobile Home Sync Issues

I just setup a 10.5 Server and 10.5 client - Home sync is working, however my login sync is set to do ONLY ~/Library - it seems to search the entire home folder, and syncs what ever has changed - I've tried reseting this and haven't had any luck. It seems to happen on any of the 3 accounts I've created so far. Anyone else having this issue? I'm in the learning process, but have to roll out a similar setup for a client pretty soon - I can't have my login/logout times this long .
    Homes are setup via AFP
    G5 1.8 Dual 4GB Ram 1x 75GB Raptor (Boot) 1x External 1TB HD
Clean Install no upgrade (this is a test machine)
    10.5 Server Running:
    OD
    DNS
    DHCP
    AFP
    SMB
    PRINT
    iCAL
    WEB
    10.5 Client (PBG4 1.67, 2GB RAM, 80GB)
    - Clean install - 1 admin account - other accounts via OD/Mobile Homes

There's a bucketload of new preference keys in com.apple.HomeSync.plist that affect what syncs when:
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogin</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncBackgroundSetAtLogout</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogin</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtLogout</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesAtSyncNow</key>
    <string>sync</string>
    <key>syncPreferencesInBackground</key>
    <string>dontSync</string>
I think that you want to set syncBackgroundSetAtLogin and syncBackgroundSetAtLogout to dontSync.

  • Lumia 810 (T-mobile) - SD card issue, any updates?

As I've found by searching around, it seems like the new Nokia Windows 8 phones have issues when using Class 10 micro-SD cards.  I'm using a 32GB Aopen Class 10 micro-SD card in my Lumia 810, and I'm experiencing the following issues:
*Attempting to sync music to my phone's SD card using the Sync App will cause the phone to reboot itself during file copy.  If I keep trying, I can get many of the files synchronized, but eventually it will crash and reboot every time a copy is initiated.
*Using the video camera, videos recorded to the SD card will skip when playing back.  When playing the videos on a PC, the skips are still there, which means they were recorded with skips.
It almost seems like the issues are related to file writes, as I've had no music playback issues.  Also, I have the Xbox Music Streaming service, and I have downloaded several GBs of music to the SD card using the app on the phone itself.  I recall one issue where the Xbox music app became unresponsive, and I had to reboot the phone, but other than that one incident, all the other files have been stored correctly and work fine.
I'd really love to know if there has been any updates on this from Nokia or Microsoft.  While certainly not a deal-breaker for me, I'd like to know if the issue is being addressed, or if I should start shopping for an 8GB class 2 or class 4 card, if that is all that will be compatible.  Officially, I know that my card is supported, but in practice, it doesn't work correctly.
    Thank you.

I am also having this same issue with my Lumia 810! I have a 64gb Class 10 microsd card. When I record video to the SD card, the resulting recording skips, even skipping in the same spots when played back on a pc. However, if I record video to the phone's internal memory, there is no skipping on the recordings. This tells me that there is an issue with the Lumia 810 writing to the SD card. My brother's Lumia 810 has the same issue with yet another type of microsd card.
Any updates on this issue yet?

  • Misspelled Mobile Home Directory

    Hello,
I have setup our staff computer with all MHD's, then I am informed that the list of names I was given included a misspelling. What is the best way to rename the WGM account, and the local MHD on the MacBook. Changing long names seems to be easy enough, but I'd really like to get short names changed also.
    Thanks,
    Randy

From what I understand, there isn't anything to be concerned about, this is the OS doing cleanup, but it is a bit worrysome that my logs are being filled with this.

I, too, have had the same problem since April 27, 2009 - that's when my last sync date is set.
However, when I look at both my iCals on my Macbook and my iMac and my iTouch, everything is synced.
And when I click on Advanced, the date is different than in my sync icon in the finder bar.
Anyone have any info on this?

  • FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

    Client

    Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
    Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
    Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing.  I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created.  I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync.  I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them.  The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
    Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file.  I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process.  I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • 10.5 clients won't login/mount home directory

    Hello all,
I am having some issues with 10.5.8 clients logging in network users.  At our school, we have a "magic triangle" setup -- Mac and PC clients, an Active Directory for user authentication (a Win 2k3 server DC I believe), and an Open Directory server (running 10.7.5 OS X Server) for Workgroup Managment and software updates.  Along with this, there is a Linux NAS box that acts as the file server hosting the user's home directories.
I have a few test student accounts that I have set up exactly the same way that normal student accounts are added to AD.  Users have complained that these 10.5.8 clients will not let any students log on, as I have verified with my test student accounts.  When logging in, an error comes up that says "Logging into the account failed because an error occurred".  In secure.log I get a "smb_mount: syserror = Broken pipe" line along with
    ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dirPath:username:] | PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication( url=smb://fileserver.domain.org/username, homedir=/Network/Servers/fileserver.domain.org/username, name=username ) returned 32
When I turn off "Create Mobile Account at Login", the user can log in just fine, which obviously leads me to believe that there is an issue with mounting the samba share for the user's home directory during the HomeSync.
I know the client can resolve the file server's hostname by nslookup, so I don't think DNS is the issue.  But I'm all out of ideas after looking everywhere online, and am hoping someone can assist me with this.  I'm just a computer technician and not a network sys admin by any means, but I know a good enough amount to try to troubleshoot this.  Even my network manager is stumped, and his answer is to upgrade the client to 10.6, resolving that the issue is with 10.5. I want to try to solve this issue rather than having to re-image all the 10.5 machines.
Obviously school is out for the weekend, so I won't be back for a couple days to work on the issue if anyone does respond in the next couple days.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Brandon

Hi Brandon, certainly no expert at this, but let me trow this out at you...
Found a work-around. This command adds a delay, in this case 45 seconds, before displaying the Login Window.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow StartupDelay -int 45
If the Login Window UI detects that the network servers are available when it starts, it will skip the delay, also if network servers become available before the delay expires, the Login Window UI cancels the delay and displays.

  • Portable home directory sync issue after computer change

I have a client who has changed one of his laptops to a new machine and now his portible home directory sync is not working. He puts in the password but it says the server is not found. I have confirmed that the correct server address is listed in the preferances. It used to say it was a incorrect password and i have also verified that the correct pass is listed in workgroup manager for his profile. now no matter what we put in it says server unable to be found. another strange thing i have noticed is the when i went in to the mobility settings on his account in workgroup manager it was all grayed out until i altered some of the setting and now it is not greyed out anymore and it wont go back to being greyed out.

hi there, i am having the exact same issue with some portable accounts. we are running 10.5.4 server and 10.5.4 clients.
i have noticed rogue ACLS appearing now in server admin for leopard, as described in a previous post.
User = Everyone, Type = Deny, Permission = Custom, Applies To = This folder, All descendants.
strangely, some of our users have the rogue ACL and some don't.
even after deleting the ACL for the user, portable home syncing still does not work.
on the client it goes through the process and the blue bar shows you it checking folders and seemingly updating. the give away for me is following the apparently successful sync, when you click on the mobile directory icon in the menu bar the date has not updated and clearly upon checking with the network account, new data has not synced.
any ideas would be great... until now i have had to manually drag data from the client to the network folder by mounting the network folder over afp, then wipe the client and recreate the portable account... even then i am not sure how long syncing has been successful, though that has seemed to fix things.
i am not sure if something is breaking in the user's library on the portable account?
any insight would be most welcome.

  • Importing Client Home Directory

We are currently in the process of installing a second OSX server (xserve/xraid combo) at our facility, and I'm a little green when it comes to Open Directory, but here goes. We have 14 workstation with 9-10 users each, and would like to import the current user Home directories that reside on each client G5, to the new Open Directory Home directories on the server - possible ?
The manual is a little vague regarding basic steps to setting up server, binding clients, and I understand that the new user home directories on the server must be set as share points - is this correct ? Then the clients are steered to the server via client "Directory Access Utility" LDAP cofig - right ? Is there a weblink that could steer me in the right direction for setting this up ?
    TIA

    Hi LAStudios,
    Welcome to the forums.
    We have 14 workstation
with 9-10 users each, and would like to import the
current user Home directories that reside on each
client G5, to the new Open Directory Home directories
on the server - possible ?
The following has worked for me (after creating the server accounts, bound the client, etc)
    1. Login to local machine as a local admin
    2. Delete user's account BUT choose the option to create a dmg of the user data.
    3. After completion, move the dmg to Users/Shared
    4. Log out
    5. Log in as your target OD network user
    6. Open the dmg from /Users/Shared and copy the items from within each of Documents, Library, etc. Do NOT just copy Documents. Library, etc.... make sure you copy the contents
Everything should be in place at the next login. Change password via System Prefs > Accounts asap and this will fix any keychain issues.
Sounds like you have up to 150 users so you may look into automating this.
BTW, sounds like you might also benefit from using mobile home folders.
The manual is a little vague regarding basic steps to
setting up server, binding clients, and I understand
that the new user home directories on the server must
be set as share points - is this correct ?

    Yes that is correct.
    Is
there a weblink that could steer me in the right
direction for setting this up ?
    http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/ has everything you need.
Also, you should Google for a wonderful PDF by John D Troye called Tips & Tricks for Tiger Server.

  • Home directory is not created and cannot log from client computer

I am trying to set up MacOsX server. I already have another server which is my DNS server. I am trying to create an Open Directory Master server.
Server was updated to 10.4.8 MacOsX from the beginning of existence.
I created couple of users in Open directory domain for testing purposes.
So, the first problem is, that when I am trying to create a user home directory server does not create it and does not give any errors about that. I tried in bash createhomedir utility, it did not work either, again, no error messages.
    Another problem:
I set up Open Directory master with LDAP. It was set up correctly, no error messages. At least I did not see any.
The I tried to connect to the server from my client iMac computer which has 10.4.8 MacOsX as well. So I set up LDAP there in Directory services, it was able to find my server and bind to it. Then when I am trying to login with username and password in Open Directory on the server, it does nor recognize it. No error messages in logs as well.
However, if I am trying to use ssh from client machine to connect to Server using the names which are in Open Directory on the server it allows me to do so. But of course it says no home directory defined.
Than you very much for responce!

An Open Directory Master requires DNS running somewhere. You could have a scenario involving 4 servers where: DNS is provided by Server A, Server B is a Web & Mail Server, Server C providing FTP Services and Server D providing LDAP services with managed preferences and automounting Home Directories (ODM). In this scenario DNS is provide by Server A and any other server requiring DNS using Server A’s DNS. You could expand this scenario if you wanted and have replica (fallover) servers for Servers A, B C or D, or if you are the frugal sort just one replica server replicating the 4 primary servers. You can do all of this pretty much in 10.4 GUI with some additional configuration using Terminal

  • "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full"

I have a 250 GB hard disk, 4.34 GB of which is in my "Home" folder. (Total HD usage is about 27 GB.) This happened suddenly after Mail had been working fine for eons. I deleted a bunch of files (107 MB) in a "Drafts" folder (none show up in the Mail app's "Drafts" icon), but it made no difference. I re-installed the Mac OS X 10.4.11 combo update... no difference. Mail version is 2.1.3.
Any help here? I cannot use Mail at all.

    Hey there,
Have you had a chance to look at this Apple support document relating directly to this issue. Hope it helps.

Is it supposed to automatically do that? Or do you have to make it show up manually? Cuz on my Nano, I have pictures, but the albums don't show up on the picture.
