  • Audio/midi interface, FW800 enclosure, nearfield monitors for MacBook Pro?

I'm running Logic 9 on my MacBook Pro, having switched over completely to a laptop based solution from my previous Mac Pro.
My previous audio/midi interface was a Digidesign FW400 MBox, but I want to switch to a USB audio/midi interface plus an external FW800 enclosure as my recording drive.
I am also looking to replace my aging Roland nearfield monitors with something smaller. I mostly run soft synths and plug-ins (I have an old UAD-2 PCI and am trying to crossgrade to the ExpressCard solution too).
    And I'm running Snow Leopard.
    S0 my questions are these:
    1) What would be a good USB2 audio/midi interface. I only need 1 x 1 for the midi (but 2 x 2 would be nice), plus XLR and 1/4 audio ins and both analog and digital outs. Decent Mac drivers a must!
    2) Any recommendations for very small but decent quality nearfield monitors? I like the Genelec's, but for whatever reason they only appear to have XLR ins. SPDIF or 1/4 analog ins would be cool -- anything compatible with 1) above.
    3) What is a good recommendation for a FW800 enclosure? Obviously looking for something quiet. My only audio in would be vocals, and they'd be recorded in the same room as the drives. There are some fanless options out there, but upon enquiry I've been advised I'd have to shut them down every four hours or so. I do have an old FW800 OWC twin drive enclosure, but despite the 'whisper quiet' claims, that thing sounds like a taxiing Learjet.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or recommendations!

'Perfect' rather depends on what you want to do with it - microphone input? Level meter? Just a simple A-D converter? digital inputs?
I've used an earlier version of this device for some years with no problems (no MIDI though):

Other interfaces by Roland: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productlist.php?ParentId=104 - Edirol (taken over by roland) used to make MIDI interfaces as well but Roland don't seem to.

  • Audio/midi interface for macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?

I have been running Sibelius and GarageBand with my keyboard and sometimes vocals in my  imac with OSX 10.6 via an old Tascam US-122 interface. I now have a new MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.4, and am set up to run Sibelius and Logic Pro 9, but I can't seem to find a compatible audio/midi interface. There is plenty of discussion on M-Audio's site, but as of May '12, still incompatible. Ideas? Thanks. John

Yeah, the new MacBooks are USB3 i.e. you have to be careful which interface you use as some of them don't work yet.
Personally I have a NI Tracktor control 2 for live work ( works with USB 3 but no midi ) and a Focusrite Saffire for recording. My Saffire however is Firewire.
I do know that the Focusrite Saffire 6 is now working on USB 3 though. http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb  + it works with Mountain Lion.
Sadly though it's still a backward compatible USB 2 inteface, but... if you're only recording Guitar and vox, this really won't matter to be honest.
Also I'd recommend Focusrite over M-Audio gear any day of the week.

  • Audio/MIDI Interface Compatibility with Logic Pro 7.2

    Hello,
Is/are there a recommended audio/midi interface(s) that will work without audio/midi timing glitches with Logic Pro 7.2? Currently, I am using Pro Tools LE v7.1, along with the DIGI002 Rack. That combination works very well, with no glitches whatsover. The possibility of using Logic Pro 7.2 raises the question of what would be a compatible interface. I don't think the DIGI002 Rack has the necessary drivers, although I may be mistaken. However, there must be an interface that works well with Logic Pro 7.2.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hello,
I went to the Metric Halo Web site and was not able to find the interface that you may have been referring to. It looks like the Mobile I/O may be the correct one, however, that interface is much more than I would want to spend (http://www.mhlabs.com/metric_halo/products/mio/)
The price seems to be @ $1200. Anyway, I am somewhat confused regarding the Metric Halo.
Any additional advice/help would be appreciated.

  • Audio/midi interface compatibility with Logic Express Mac osx 10.6.5

hi all, I'm looking for a compatible audio/midi interface to use with the latest mac os. I recently purchased a Ediroll UA25 but was unable to get it working . I installed the latest drivers from the Roland site but when plugged in it just wasn't being recognised. I sent it back and got a full refund but now I am insure if the Ediroll was faulty or if it wasn't compatible with os 10.6.5. I am now in the process of looking to purchase another interface but am looking for help from you guys.
    Thanks in advance,
    kiev

    Hi,
just out of curiousity: did you use the UA-25 or the UA-25EX? I know the 25EX has a driver switch on it's back where you can enable a standard driver which should be compatible to OS X without an additional driver.
However, i didn't find another interface including a compressor except for the Yamaha Audiogram 6, if you need this feature.
If you don't need it, buy a MOTU, preferably with firewire, or a Presonus. If you want quality, maybe an Apogee Duet. I myself - due to shortage of funds - still use either my Tascam Fireone or my Alesis I/O 2. The Alesis sounds nice for it's price, but i won't buy any of these lower end interfaces anymore. You get what you pay for. I also used the Edirol UA-25EX for a time, but this was before snow leopard, so i can't really say "Yes or No", but it was definitely a very good interface compared to it's price. I won't recommend M-Audio, however, but others like it.

  • Edirol Audio/Midi Interface and Yamaha Keyboard

    Hi everybody,
I just got an Edirol Audio/Midi interface UA-20, installed correctly with latest drivers, garage band recognizes it. Now I want to connect my old Yamaha PSR SQ16 keyboard through it, but somehow it doesn't work. Can anybody please give me a guidance on how to connect it properly, maybe i'm too dumb for that...
    Thanks for any help!

I'm shure you must have already figured this out, becouse it's very simple thing to do, but I'll post my answer anyway, perhaps someone else has the same problem.
The Yamaha PSR SQ16 has a "MIDI OUT" plug, in the back of the sinthetizer. To connect with de UA20 Edirol, all you need to do is to get a midi cable (you can find it in every music store) and plug the Yamaha PSR SQ16 MIDI OUT to the Edirol UA20 MIDI IN.
    And boy, that's it.
All the fantastic sounds and samples that cames with Garageband, are now triggerd through your Yamaha PSR SQ16.
Things to check: in the AUDIO MIDI UTILITY, be shure that the UA20 is set as de midi in out device.
In Preferences of Garageband, be shure to check that the UA20 is set as audio and midi interface.
    Hope this be helpfull.
I apologise for my english, it isn't my first language.

  • Can Anyone suggest and audio/midi interface for MacBook Logic Express?

Can anyone suggest an audio/midi interface for use with a MacBook and Logic Express? I'm seeing a lot of problems with Tascam devices; does anyone have an interface that actually works well? Two audio inputs and midi i/o would suit my current needs, but more would be fine if it works.
    Thanks!

Any of the Pro-Tool Mboxs will work with Logic Express. Kind of an unadvertised feature. But I have an original M-box with very nice Focusrite Preamps that works like a charm. No midi though.. some of the newer M-boxes have them.
Also, I have a Presonus Firebox and I know they make some smaller interfaces. No problems working with those.
M-audio Makes some great interfaces too. Their Fast Track pro would probably have everything you need for under $200.

  • Mainstage2 Compatability With Audio/ MIDI Interfaces and Lion?

I've recently upgraded to a new laptop with Lion and my old interface is no longer supported.
Can anyone suggest a small unit that will work with Mainstage2?
I bought the Scarrlet and it works with Logic but not Mainstage2.
    Thanks!

I don't think you should be touching the Audio/MIDI setup utility at all if you're just trying to listen to music. Those settings are there for those who do audio recording/MIDI work on their computers.
    not true...
I use an external DAC connected through the digital output of the Mac Book Pro...Then, in order to play the music at the correct sample rate I DO have to change the setting in the audio/midi setup if using iTunes as a player.(before even open iTunes)
Amarra is a much better player than iTunes and it change the sample rate by itself without having to do it manually. But the issue remains, I just can not choose 88.2 KHz....
    Any other ideas?

Check out the Alesis io26 -- 8 i/o's plus lightpipe for expansion -- pristine mic/line preamps, solid and portable, and very reasonable pricing

  • Audio/MIDI Interface to replace a Tascam US-122L?

    Hi guys,
I bought a Tascam US-122L off ebay last week to replace an Asio Alesis iO2, with the intention of using it for recording, multi-tracking and most importantly gigging (MIDI keyboard thru Mainstage) at a festival next week.
I had the usual problems that people have with the US-122L on OSX Lion, and have managed to get it working for audio but not MIDI, effectively rendering it useless for the biggest thing I need it for.
As a result, I have decided I need to find another interface as I really don't have time to spend all next week trying all the different fixes that may or may not work.
So, can anyone recommend an interface which:
    - is fully compatible with OSX Lion, and Logic and Mainstage 2.
    - has both audio & MIDI capability-for example the M-Audio Fast Track doesn't have a MIDI port, so it would be of no use to me.
    - is USB powered, not mains
    - is of decent quality for audio
    - is portable- not much bigger than the tascam at the most, preferably smaller
I need to be able to pick one up second hand (online) for preferably less than £80, if possible. I'll be using it on a late-2011 MacBook Pro and have a powered USB hub.
    Thanks,
    Alex

works fine here on 10.4.8 and a 15" 1.5Ghz G4 powerbook and an old us-122
Just for the record: When i first open the aggregate device editor no devices show up.
They do when i hit the "+" next to "add and remove aggregate.."

  • FireWire Audio/MIDI interface suggestions

    Hi there,
I'm looking to purchase a firewire external audio and MIDI interface but am having trouble finding what I need.
I only need stereo audio in and out (much like the Apogee Duet), as well as a MIDI interface. The interfaces I've seen around seem to have 14+ channels. As I already have a mixing desk they would all go to waste.
Basically the Duet would be ideal, only it doesn't have a MIDI interface. Does anyone know of any piece of hardware like this?
The other option would of course be to get the Duet and a seperate MIDI interface- but I'd prefer to have them both in one box if possible.
    Thanks for any suggestions

If that is your only problem get the Duet and buy yourself a two in two out Midi interface,
which should set you back 40 to 50 USD.

  • Need your help choosing between 2 audio/midi interface for logic

Hi, new member here. I just signed-up just to ask for your recommendations.
I am looking to buy either the Cakewalk UA-4fx (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UA4FX) or Tascam US-122mkII (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US122mk2).
Do you have any advice on which one to get (or a third alternative if you know something that's similar but better)?
I'm mainly looking to record from my Roland Fantom X keyboard to my Macbook (using Logic Pro). The effects/filters on the Cakewalk device is not that important to me (since I can use software effects), but the quality of sound is the most important. Also, ease-of-use and compatibility with Logic Pro is important. The device also must include MIDI-in/MIDI-out in addition to 1/4 inch direct line in for my synth. (I plan on using Midi-In/Midi-out with MainStage in Logic Studio). Not looking to spend too much more than $100.
I think I read in a review that even though the Cakewalk UA-4fx has 2 inputs, it can only record 1 at a time. Is the same true of the Tascam or can it record 2 simultaneous tracks?
But in short, sound quality AND compatibility with Logic Pro and MainStage are the main concerns. Does anyone have advice on choosing between the 2 or a third option if you know of one?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello -
It's been suggested to avoid, if possible, USB-based audio devices. My humble suggestion? I'd consider MOTU products. I own three MOTU audio devices (2408-MK3, 828-MK3 & 828-MK2) and all work just fine. The 828-MK3 has both midi and audio inputs & outputs (including ADAT inputs/outputs).
Other people will, no doubt, suggest audio devices from other companies. All probably get the job done well. But if you're thinking about recording a lot of instruments at the same time, it is my understanding that it is best to avoid USB-based devices.
Good luck with your search and your decision.
