Mobile users - unable to authenticate or log-in

I am having some difficulty in allowing mobile users to authenticate and log-in to thier notebooks when they are away from the network.
Everything works great as long as they are attached. I think I have have configured the users correctly for mobile accounts - but obviously I am doing something wrong.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

I believe we have resolved the issue in-house.
We were taking all of the proper steps to create a mobile user using Workgroup Manager and selecting the mobility preference. The user’s home directory did replicate correctly, but….
The issue is/was that when we create each user we create the user with the legal user name and two aliases. Alias number 1 is the users employee ID alias number 2 is the users firstname followed by the first initial of their last name.
When the user tried to login remotely the same way that they do when connected; using either of the two aliases, they were unable to authenticate.
You must use the primary USER ID.

  • Mobile user can't log in

    Hello,
    I have an issue with mobile users. I have a Mac OS X server set up with OD. I have created mobile user profiles on it. Those profiles can log in to the server without issues.
    Yet, I can't log on to any other mac on my network with those mobile users. If I try using the graphical interface, I get a login failed message, with the following error in the system.log file.

    Hi
    +"is there anyway for mobile users to be admins of the local machine when they are offline?"+
    Yes. System Preferences > Accounts > Select the Network Account. Click the lock to authenticate. Provide the local admin name and password. Tick the "Allow user to administer this computer" box. Logout and Login. Doing it this way reliably works for me every time. Train/Teach the user how to use the Sync options. Try not to sync everything. Avoid the Pictures folder if you can especially if there are large iPhoto libraries. Same for Movies folder. For offline users works best if they manually sync. Less problems that way.
    +"in the Directory Utility was that it mounted my AD specified home directory in the dock"+
    Apply a Dock MCX for that User or Group. Does not have to be a persistent setting. Once allows for additional user configuration. Under the "Add other folders" section tick the "Network Home" option. There are other ways of doing this but that should do it.

  • Users unable to create Mobile Accounts

    Good afternoon.
    I have an interesting problem with the creation of Mobile Accounts.
    We have a Computer Group with its Preferences set to allow the creation of Mobile Accounts & Portable Home Directories; with due consideration given to what to synchronise and what not to. The iBooks & Mac Books in this group are all used by one staff member only. They are all running 10.4.7 and have 256 or 512 MB RAM.
    The first two laptops added to the list allowed their users to create Mobile Accounts & PHDs no problem, and they continue to work. But any other machines I add to the group refuse to allow the creation of a Mobile Account. It seems that Workgroup Manager does no pass on their changed Preferences during subsequent logons. I have tested this by renaming a laptop at its entry in the group and seeing if the name is changed on the machine at the next login. It is not, but stepping through the machine’s settings at the logon display does give me a green light for network availability.
    I can create a Mobile Account on a machine by logging on as a user and amending their account Preferences, but this does not provide the same degree of flexibility in configuring synchronisation settings.
    Has anyone else seen this problem please?

    The problem was an error in naming the computer group. Renaming it solved the problem.

  • Set up Mobile, but users can not authenticate

    I have set up a iPrint Mobile appliance, have AirPrint and Email printing working to non-secured printers.
    When I try to LOGIN with the iOS iPrint client, I can only LOGIN with the Admin user, not any of the users that I have imported with LDAP (from eDirectory)
    Trying AirPrint, when I click on a secure printer, it will not acknowledge, just blinks and will not select
    It appears to me that the password does not get brought over to the iPrint appliance on the user import, so users can't authenticate.
    Any ideas on what more test to perform, or what the issue may be? I should be able to print to secure printers right?
    Colin.

    OK, appreciated, I'll try and find an iOS 6 device and test with that.
    About email printing: When I send a List Printers command, it does not list any of the secure printers. So is it correct that printing by email to secure printers is not supported? Can't see anything on that in the docs, though it makes sense from authentication point of view.
    Colin.

    Secure printing should work with iOS 6 devices, but I don't believe
    it's currently working with iOS 7. This is the only note I see in the
    docs which doesn't mention iOS 7.

  • New 10.6 computer with mobile user pinwheeling often

    Hi folks,
    I'm having an issue with a computer being used by one of our employees. She had an old 2009 iMac that she was using that began pinwheeling often whenever she was using it (we thought it was a Hard Drive Issue), so we replaced it with a new MacMini (right before Lion's release) and as she is a mobile user, used that to download all of the work files back to her machine. I did a fresh install of MS Word and its updates, and ran updates on all of her programs. But now the pinwheeling is back with a vengeance. I've run disk repairs, permissions repairs, and done everything I can think of troubleshooting wise short of doing an archive and re-install of her OS.
    I have pulled a copy of her Console log and have seen a number of errors that look to be repeated. If anyone could take a look at this and possibly help me determine what may be causing the issue, I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks!

  • Launchd Item and Mobile Users

    Hi,
    I have two scripts designed to run at login, both are launchd items in the /Library/Launch Agents folder that run scripts. When a standard user logs in, they work fine, the problem I have is when a Mobile User logs in the for the first time, the scripts don't work, on each log in after that, they are fine. But on the initial login it is important that these scripts work.
    The error console gives me says the "lauchnd item exited with code 1" and the next line says that "application Terminal could not be found"
    Like i said the next log in they work fine. Both scripts are designed to run through terminal.
    Does any one have any advice? If you need more info don't hesitate to ask.

    This is the Launchd item
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.Cymphonix.launchd.client</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/Library/Cymdir/runcymphonix.sh</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    <key>KeepAlive</key>
    <false/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    It points to a script for launching our Cymphonix agent.. the Cymphonix agent runs a script in Terminal to log it in etc.. when it attempts to launch this i get the error described above. the error in console shows as follows.
    12/1/09 11:54:59 AM com.Cymphonix.launchd.clinet[920] Unable to find application named 'Terminal'
    12/1/09 11:54:59 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.1649331210[894] (com.Cymponix.launchd.client[920]) Exited with exit code: 1

  • How do I set a specific computer to not create a mobile user profile but let it just remain a network-user after authentication?

    Hi,
    I have a group of computers that are set to create mobile users (aka syncing the home dir).
    Now I want to create a second group, that *just* authenticates the user (aka logging in, but not creating a local-synced home).
    Both computer-groups should co-exist and be available to the same users.
    I tried just setting the preferences in the computer group in the mobility section as "Manage Always" and the checkbox at "Account Creation", "Create mobile account" *disabled*, but the computers in the group still start the syncing process and create a mobile user on the local machine. I tried to set the params of Home- and Preference-Sync to "never", but the issue remains.
    Thx in advance,
    Jan

    If this base station is actually the "snow" then you will need a Mac or PC that can run a version of the AirPort Utility that can administer this "very old" 802.11b base station. You won't be able to do so with an iOS device or Mac running Lion or newer OS.

    Hi,
    Please make sure your POP3 service is enabled in Exchange 2013 and run the following command to check your POP3 settings:
    Get-PopSettings | FL
    Also try to re-configure your POP connection in Outlook for your Exchange 2013 account with incoming POP3 server pointing to Exchange server 2013 instead of Exchange 2007. We can do the following to look up your server POP settings:
    1. Sign in to your account using Outlook Web App.
    2. In Outlook Web App, on the toolbar, click Settings >
    Options > Account > My account >
    Settings for POP and IMAP access.
    3. The POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP server name and other settings you may need to enter are listed on the
    Settings for POP and IMAP access page under POP setting or
    IMAP setting, and SMTP setting.
    Please refer to the POP setting listed in OWA to setup account in Outlook.

  • Troubles with Mobile Users in Lion

    I have a new Lion Server install and installing Lion on several Macbooks.  With Snow Leopard we were able to setup Mobile users that would sync their home directories back to the server.  I would like to do the same on the Lion but continue to have issues.
    I created a Sharepoint for the Homes located on a data_hd partition.  I am able to mount this share successufully and can read and write with no issues.
    I create the user in the User App, have the home set to the sharepoint and I see the user folder created on the server.  I then use Workgroup manager to setup the Mobility preferences to create account, Sync at Login, Logout, etc...  I am unable to login with that username on the macbook (which has joined the OD).  I get an error that the user is unable to login due to an error...
    Any ideas on what I could have done wrong?

    The exact error is "You are unable to log in to the user account newuser at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

  • LDAP Mobile Users & Password (not) Syncing

    Hi folks, we are starting to enable LDAP for our notebook users and have one issue that hopefully someone has some advice on.
    We're using a Linux based LDAP server, 389 Directory Server.
    Our users can authenticate, login, we make them admins, and enable the mobile user account.
    It works well until they change their password on LDAP via our web interface.
    Their new password works for Lion so long as they are on our network.  Once they take their notebook away and can't reach our ldap anymore, the mobile user account will only accept their original ldap password.
    It seems as if the passwords are not being synced/cached locally.  I just discovered this before coming home for the weekend and hope to have a few hints to get going on Monday if anyone has a suggestion.
    One last thought is that we turn off Home Directory Sync because we're not using network based home directories yet (set it to manual in Mobile Accounts). Would that also disable password syncing except when a manual sync happens?
    Thanks folks!

    Hi Steve.
    We have mobile accounts turned on, but we do not have home directory synching. Faculty/Staff, must at least once, login with their mac while on our campus network. This authenticates the faculty/staff against our LDAP server (Solaris) and "caches" their credentials using the Mobile user feature of Lion. Once they login in once the can then go off campus and use that password to log into their machine, do updates, whatever.
    The issue we have is when someone changes their LDAP password from our "web account tools" page it is spotty on the LDAP Snyc with the machine.
    Hope that helps

  • 10.5.5 Active directory problem for mobile users

    I an running 10.5.5 on a MBP 2.4. The computer is attached to Active Directory for authentication. The accounted is setup as a mobile user with automatic home sync. Below is the problem I'm experiencing after 10.5.5.
    Upgrade worked fine, everything went through as expected. When I got home with computer, couldn't login. I did eventually get logged in, computer became extremely unresponsive at intermittent times.
    At work next day, everything worked fine.
    I believe this is a problem with 10.5.5 computers that are bound to AD, when AD is not available (but internet is.) Some type of weird priority locking or timeout setting? It seems to fail immediately if no network is available, but if the internet is available it is like it gets "hung" waiting for a response.
    Anybody else having similar problems?
    Below are the details on the specific tests that brought me to this conclusion.
    1) Boot with work network cable connected - Works fine
    2) Boot with work wifi network enabled - works fine
    3) Boot with public wifi network enabled and work cable - works fine.
    4) Boot with only public wifi - appears "frozen" (turned off after 5 minutes of trying to login)
    5) Boot without network or wifi - works fine using cached mobile account info
    6) Boot with network cable and public wifi, remove network cable after login- works fine for a period becomes periodically frozen. attempts to do anything become queued, when computer starts responding queue emptys out (can see menus / applications switch around to correspond with clicks.)
    7) Change account to Manual sync of mobile account, again boot with network cable and public wifi, remove network cable- no freezing responds normaly.
    All steps repeated after rebinding computer to AD - same results.

    First rule of installing an upgrade, run permissions repair both before & after. Did you do that?
    I'm using a Mac dual bound to AD & OD, works perfectly. I can't speak for the exact setup of your network but I personally would be suspicious of AD. I had a similar issue some time back where my processor would go crazy with the net directory authentication running like crazy. Turned out AD had somehow forgotten my computer. It only happened away from work where my Mac couldn't contact the AD server (not exactly sure why). I'd try the following.
    1. While at work create a local administrative account on your Mac (you should always have a backup account anyway).
    2. Login as local admin account.
    3. open Directory Utility from the Applications/Utilities folder & remove the AD server (you'll need an account that can bind machines to AD).
    4. re-add your Mac to AD.
    This may resolve your issue & shouldn't hurt anything in the least.

  • Questions on MCX Policies for Laptop/Mobile Users:

    Questions on MCX Policies for Laptop/Mobile Users:
    I have several managed Macs running Leopard. Many of them are MacBook laptops. My main MCX policies involve mapping printers and mounting network volumes at login. These are simple computer and group policies to help make the users life a little easier when it comes to finding and using network resources such as file server volumes and network printers.
    Since most of my users are laptops, they are expressing 2 major concerns involving their laptops when they are off the LAN (i.e.; on the road at a cafe, working at home, staying at a hotel or when they have no network at all)
    1) When users are off our LAN, the Mac still tries to mount the network volumes in their OD/MCX login items when the user logs in (with cached mobile credentials). Can this be avoided? Windows PCs do not do this. If the PC laptop cant find an AD DC, they simply don't run the login scripts and thus dont try to mount/map network volumes. How can I make the Mac laptops only mount network volumes when they are on the LAN?
    2) Most Mac users have a Cisco VPN client, and use it regularly to connect to the company's LAN from home, hotels etc. Of course when they log into the network via VPN, their network volumes are not mounted automatically. Is their a way to re-run the MCX managed login items script once they connect to the VPN and mount (i.e.; "map") their network drives? Sure, users can simple use the "Connect To Server" option in the FInder (or perhaps try and use the god-awful Leopard Finder side bar discovery browser thingy which I hate - never mind), but I need a consistent automated way to mount volumes quickly and easily for my mobile users. There must be a way to run (or re-run) the login items part of my MCX policies.

    Ping!
    I'm looking for this functionality too. Anyone have a solution to either of these? One that came to mind is to wrap the login items in a script which detects if the LAN is available.

  • After upgrading to yosemite, cannot login as mobile user

    After upgrading to Yosemite, I can no longer log on to the Mavericks server as a mobile user. The password prompt is first on the server instead, because only after I do I remove all network connections or disable, I can log in.
    The connection to the server is running AFP. If I remove the binding in the user settings, then it goes without problems. Also, the Sync works to profile server. I create the new binding, I can do this only with no name / password, otherwise it returns an error message.
    What can be the problem? Must necessarily be 4.0 installed Yosemite or server on the server?
    Thanks for a tip!
