".MobileBackups.trash" eating up my SSD

Running Space Gremlin Pro on my MacBook Air startup SSD, it shows that 261GB is being consumed by many items in the .MobileBackups.trash folder.
My total SSD is only 240GB, so I'm not sure what's going on, but I have very little free space.  I'm assuming these are local TimeMachine files for when I'm not connected to an external Time Machine drive? But my Time Machine drive has been attached for days, yet these files still persist.
Is it safe to delete these files? Should I delete them? Why isn't the system automatically deleting them?

Looks like Space Gremlin Pro has a problem if it is telling you you have 261 GB on a 240 GB drive. Try  menu/About this Mac/More Information/Storage to see what you get.

  • Secure Empty Trash - takes forever with SSD

I've installed 2 x 256 GB Samsung SSDs that I am now thinking of using as my bootdrive. But as I was playing around with them, I noticed that they turn into the slowest turtles when secure emptying the trash. Having done some investigating, one issue appears to be OS X's habit of zeroing the respective areas 7 times to meet the DoD standards. (I believe that is not the only issue though as secure emptying also takes much longer in my RAID 0 HD setup than it should for just writing that amount of data 7 times).
I couldn't find any clues on how to change this behaviour of overwriting 7 times. As a recent study suggests that most data is gone for good after a single overwrite on both, HDs and SSDs, I reckon that is good enough for me. Any ideas on how to change that behaviour? (I am aware of the regular emptying trash, what I want is a 'secure empty' with a single overwrite).

Thank you - that's very helpful.
I guess this response also implies there is no way to change the default behaviour of the GUI?

Possibly (1) temporary files not deleted and/or (2) caching in apps like Internet Explorer.
Try Disk Cleanup. If that doesn't solve your problem, you can investigate by checking the
sizes of directories in your User Profile.
    Hope that helps,

  • Finding Missing HD or SSD space - solution

I thought I would post this as I spent a lot of time finding the solution and came across a lot of threads for the same problem, so hope it helps some people out.  I confess that this is not my work but a few cobbled together solutions from others that worked  for me.
If your HD or (as in my case SSD) is reporting via Finder or Omnidisk sweeper or similar App that the used space is greater than the files that you can account for (ie my 250GB SSD was showing in Finder as having 134Gb of used space but the sum of all the files reported by Omni disc sweeper, Finder and  Disk inventory X only came to 64GB with just over 50Gb of free space: hence 70GB that I could not account for or find.  It seems it is usually due to hidden files and particularly those related to mobile backups from Time machine.  However, knowing this and finding the pesky hidden files took me a lot of googling and a fair amount of time, repairing disk permissions and disks had no effect whatsoever, so here is the solution if your boot drive seems to have used space that you cannot accont for, or "lost space":
First of all to find the missing data:
It is usually in hidden Files.  To view, you need to run OmniDisk Sweeper or similar from the root directory (very important as it will not show all the hidden files or other users files if run as I guess most people - myself included - run it, that  is from their user directory)  You also need to be logged in as an  Administrator.  Type the following into Terminal:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You will then be required to enter your password.
I used OmniDisk Sweeper (free App) with the above command to run it from the root directory, should look something like this, showing all files,  hidden or otherwise and file sizes.  (Must be run as User with Admin privileges).
In my example there are 68.3 GB taken up by the .MobileBackups file that wont be shown by Omnidisk sweeper or similar App if run from users directory.  The .MobileBackups file is a Time machine back up file that will usually be deleted once Time Machine has backed up to an external file.  However in my case, I didn't have enough space for the time machine back up so disabled it but then ended up with a hidden file called MobileBackups.Trash that took me ages to find using the above process and then delete (as I will explain in a bit).
See following article to explain further about this step:
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/
To delete the mobilebackups.trash file I used this command in Terminal.  Obviously it will need amending to delete any other files you want rid of.
    sudo mv /.MobileBackups.trash /Trashme
    From this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5802961?tstart=0
This will create folder in top directory of hard disk  (double click on ssd or hd image to open into this directory) called “trash me” That contains the mobile backup.trash files to be deleted.
    Other useful commands in Terminal
    Show hidden files:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    Stop showing hidden files:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    I hope this is helpful.

    LowLuster wrote:
They are not real backups. They are made just in case you accidentally delete a files, that is IF the LSS has backed up that file and or the changes to that file before you deleted it.
Your statement does not define what 'Local Snapshots' are and and the reasons for having them (your syntax is very confusing).  From the Apple link, the definition is as follows:
    "What are local snapshots?
Local snapshots complement regular Time Machine backups that are stored on your external disk or Time Capsule by creating a local backup on your startup disk when your normal backup drive is not available. This provides you with a "safety net" for times when you might be away from your external backup disk or Time Capsule but accidentally delete a file. When your normal backup is available again, Time Machine copies the local snapshot contents from your startup disk to your normal backup drive."
Thus they can provide a historical Time Machine record in cases where the user is not connected to the Time Machine backup disk such as on a business trip.  That is why this is a feature on portable devices and not desktops.
Local Snapshots will record changes in the same way as if the MBP were connected to the Time Machine HDD.  When the MBP is reconnected to the Time Machine HDD, these changes will then be downloaded to the Time Machine. The changes will be stored using the same criteria as if the changes had been made when connected to the Time Machine HDD.
Again a careful review of the two links I posted should clarify what Time Machine Snapshots are, what and how they are used and correct the misconceptions that one may have regarding same.
    Ciao.

  • Reinstall applications after deleting by moving into trash.

I have deleted my adobe applications by moving into trash before installing an SSD drive into my Mac and migrating my account over. Unfortunately the application manager doesn't seem to realise that the apps are gone and are not letting me reinstall them, any suggestions?

I will suggest to uninstall the applcaition from:
Main hard drive -> Applications -> Utilities -> Adobe Installer -> (uninstall then programm by double clicking the uninstaller).

  • Time Machine won't backup ANY files though no error is given

I have a MacBookPro with Mountain Lion which I bought last November. For several months Time Machine worked fine.  Then, about a month ago, it stopped writing anything to the External USB Disk I was using but DID continue to create local "snapshots".  I have tried all sorts of solutions, read a bazillion forum posts (including Pondini, etc.).  There are no exclusions. I even got a new USB drive and tried that.  Nothing.  The log shows no errors.
I finally turned of TM, removed the preferencs file, reformatted the external disk, rebooted and tried again.  Nothing.  TM says there is nothing to back up, or more accurately says:

So it seems like it THOUGHT there was something to back up then changed its mind?  An advice is welcome.

  • Force Time Machine Full Backup

I wanted to update my Macbook Pro with a new Hard Disk, after preparing & installing the new HD and then chossing to restore from the Time Machine, i was surpised that the Time Machine showed me only some Backups(Full Backups), and the last full backup was 6 Months old, although i did a TM Backup just before installing the new HD, but apprently it is an incremntal backup, therfore it was not shown in the list.
So my question is how to force a TM Full Backup so that i can just restore it on the new HD. I know i can do it if i deleted all the old Backups, but i want to keep them, is it possible?

  • Time Machine Not Backing Up New Files

Time Machine is NOT backing up my recent files.
I recently noticed that Time Machine was backing up really quickly instead of taking several minutes as usual.  I checked previous backups and discovered that NONE of my recent files were backed up.
I have a very basic setup.  An external usb 1 tb drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) being used as the time machine backup drive.  A new i5 mac mini with OS X 10.8.4.  About 200 gigs of data with one user on the internal drive.
I have followed all of the Pondini troubleshooting steps.  I have restarted into safe mode to force a deep traversal.  I have repaired permissions and verified all disks with Disk Utility.  I have deleted time machine preferences and followed instructions as per Pondini #A4.  The backup seems to run but then finishes quickly but DOES NOT BACK UP any recent files.
I have run TMUTIL COMPARE, it showed that many files needed to be backed up.
I have run TMUTIL ISEXCLUDED on some of the files that were not being backed up.  It showed that they were not flagged for exclusion.
I have run a manual backup after starting up in Safe Mode, which forced a deep event scan, but then exhibited the same behaviour..
I have acquired a new external hard drive, backed up the complete main drive (using Time Machine which appeared to be successful on the first time full backup), then run a manual backup on that new drive after adding new files and had THE SAME PROBLEM.
Here's the latest console output, which is typical since I have noticed this issue.  There appear to be many megabytes of new files to be backed up, but then the operation completes within seconds and no files are backed up at all.

  • Move Mobile Backups to 2nd internal HD?

I run two hard drives in my MBP (swapped out a broken optical drive). I have OSX, my applications, etc. on an SSD, and my Home folder on my old HDD in the optical drive slot. Right now MobileBackups is backing up my SSD, but it's doing so on my HDD. Part of the reason I made this change was that I had run out of room on my HDD, so this was a way to get a performance boost and more space. How do I change the location of the MobileBackups "disk."
Maybe it's backing up to the HDD, because that's the drive I installed Lion on and then used Carbon Cloner to move it to the SSD?

  • Stopped Local Snapshots But They Still Haven't Deleted

So, about a week and a half ago, I decided to use the commond 'sudo tmutil disablelocal', to stop Tiem Machine making local snapshots on my hard drive. Before I initiated that command, the 'About This Mac' gave me a a backup usage of around 25GB. When I put in the command, the 25GB was transferred from Backups to Other. So I had a Backups of 0GB, and an 'Other' of 75GB (from 50GB).
I read that it would take a while to delete them, so just let it be and went on using my computer as normal. For most people 'a while' was a couple of hours, but I am now almost ten days down the road and the Other file is still a whopping 75GB.
I have tried to locate the /.MobileBackups or the /.MobileBackups.Trash using Tinkertool to show hidden files, but I can't find it anywhere. I've tried turning Time Machine off and on, and turning Local Backups on and off, but nothing seems to help.
It's as if I have 25GB just floating around somewhere.......
I've looked online and seeked help from Pondini, but I haven't managed to get anywhere yet.
    Has anybody any suggestions!?!?!
    Thanks

    Hi,
I'm not sure what you are saying.
It's when I click on .pdf document on a webpage, it just automatically opens with Quicktime and not the correct App. When I open a .pdf doc. stored on my Mac, I can open it with Adobe, or, Preview, because I can change that in the "open with" window, as you say.
So what else am I not doing right?

  • Can't fully restore my Time Machine/Time Capsule Backup to my newly-wiped SSD/HDD

On receiving my leased, Bootcamp-enabled MacBook Pro, I saw that there were no installation discs for Windows or OSX, and that there were 2 partitions (or so I thought) for Mac and Windows: 375GB each. As I produce music using software in both OSs, I wanted to create a 185GB FAT-32 partition to store my sound samples, projects etc. I attempted to create this partition by resizing (halving) my Bootcamp partition in OSX Disc Utility. The first time I attempted it, resizing was possible, but after the new partition was created, I had problems booting and so had to edit my GPT in order to boot again. Once ‘fixed,’ (by deleting the new partition) I couldn’t resize the Bootcamp partition to fill the 185GB gap, and that 185GB was ‘lost.’ The Bootcamp partition was 375GB but its used space + free space added up to 190GB
So the other day, I tried to follow what I thought was a more logical approach, which I was *sure* would work. My plan was to:
Use Windows Backup (and/or Clonezilla, or Disk Utility) to store an image of my Windows partition.
Uninstall/wipe the Windows partition using BootCamp Assistant, creating 1 big OSX partition
Use BootCamp Assistant to re-partition the HDD for Windows, OSX and ‘shared,’ and then re-install Windows, leaving 175GB for shared music production files
Restore the image/backups (approx 70GB) and carry on as before.
During the process, I deemed that this wasn't possible on my system for a variety of reasons: My laptop already had 4 partitions (Windows Recovery, Bootcamp/Windows, Mac Recovery HD, and Mac) and my understanding is that the MBR of my SSD only supports 4 partitions in its Bootcamp + OSX-compatible state. I have never got this '5 partition' strategy working.
I was unable to restore my Windows partition after re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. As a solution, I then decided to wipe the OSX partition (at that point the only 'visible' partition on the disk) and in-place re-install Mac OS X, with a view to installing Windows after OSX.
Once I wiped my hard drive, however, restoring my files and settings, didn't work as expected. Time Machine backups etc were inaccessible after a normal re-install. Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go. The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out. Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
I can view files/backups in Time Machine but I can't completely restore my computer to the state it was on 18th May...and 11 days without a fully-functioning laptop is really annoying. I wasn't able to ‘clean’ *or* ‘in-place’ re-install OSX using my existing settings and so I'm frustrated that Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process. Migration Assistant didn’t transfer everything. Can I get things back to the way they were?
    Things that haven’t restored correctly:
None of my icon customisations at the top of the screen were there (DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, Kuvva, the way battery icon was displayed
    Safari: Top Sites, History, Plugins
Logic Pro: Downloaded sounds, presets (10+GB), recent items, plugin settings/AU manager
Mail: Settings (and I’m assuming, the downloaded/cached mail: 7GB)
    Trash can: Empty
All recent item lists apart from cloud-based services like Evernote, Notes, contacts
    iTunes library
    Dock view and settings
    Settings for most programs
And I'm sure there are more!

Thanks Pondini; I'd hoped you'd reply. I'm still getting used to this tech, no can't even quote here.

If you mean you installed OSX and created a user account, then couldn't find the backups, that's because they're treated as being from a different disk, until you either transfer your data or do a manual "associatedisk".  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #19 for details.
Yet to try the associatedisk...didn't realise this was possible until reading your guides. The explanation makes sense now. On installing OSX it said transfers were possible after installation, so I put off transferring as the first 'restore' had frozen on 10%, thinking I'd do it afterwards.
Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go
That sounds like damaged/corrupted backups. Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

You mean, on the Mac OS X Utilities menu on the Recovery HD?  I've never heard of that.  That should always be selectable, so you can specify where the backups you want are located.  Nothing happens when you click it?  Can you click the other options there?
Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
Also sounds like directory or file problems on the backups.
This is just when I go into Time Machine/Star Wars. I can't just go to the latest backup and click "Restore" (which I assume would just restore my whole computer/HDD, although I have no experience in this). I can only select files and restore them individually.
Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process.
There has never been any such thing.
I bought into the Time Machine 'hype' and thought it was an easy and reliable tool, but was a lot more difficult to do a full restore than I thought.
    Trash can: Empty
Correct.  Time Machine (like most backup apps) don't back up trash.
All the rest should have been backed-up and restored.  Do you see them in the backups?  What, if anything, was excluded from being backed-up?
As a non-native Mac user, I'm not sure where all these things are stored...perhaps in Library? I think that not having the full hard-drive just restore annoyed me...I felt that backing up my whole hard drive every hour should've allowed me to restore everything to as it was without a hitch, and when it didn't work I just tried a few things before posting on here.
If repairing the backups finds and fixes things, you might want to try again.
    Gonna try now
If not, and if you can see the missing items via the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you should be able to restore them selectively.

  • Creating space on SSD on my Mac Book Pro 10.9.5

Running out of space on  MBP  2.7 GHZ intel core i7  16 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
    Available: 100.100.01 GB (100,007,829,504 bytes)
Capacity: 499.499.42 GB (499,418,034,176 bytes)  Tried to delete photos that on reading in other forums should be stored off the MBR as it is a working platform only but instead of creating more room on the SSD it ends of with less space available still.  Emptying trash seems to work in reverse.  What do I need to do next please ? as  I am down to 50 Gbs and I'm sure this affecting performance.  Some very strange things happening in the MBR system. As I am 3000 ams away from the nearest Apple techs any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you open GP, if you search for the HDD icon (Macintosh HD) and click on it, it will do a full scan of the HDD.
ODS swept the whole SSD with a total of 265  compared with 105 available on Disk Utility
I do not quite understand what you mean here.  Total of 265 what?
Should I be "securing trash" to regain space ?
No, that should make no difference.
Perform a Spotlight reindex.  See if that readjusts the numbers:

  • Is there a solution yet for FCPX eating all the RAM?

FCPX is eating all my RAM and 'Memory Clean' keeps having to kick in so that the system doesnt stop completely. I have searched various forums and sites for an answer but noone seems to have a solution yet.
My events and projects are all on external (7200rpm) drives, I use Event Manager X to only open what I need per project, and background processing is off, but the RAM just keeps diving down until the system almost freezes. Very frustrating, especially if a client is present.
    Yes, I've trashed the preferences.
    umm...help?

I do not believe that MC is capable of purging Video RAM thus the memory on your graphic card.
There are two RAM problems with FCPx or should I say OS X 10.6 & 10.7
10.6 & 10.7 does a bad job (10.6 worse than 10.7) @ setting RAM Free. This problem shows itself when overall system performance (I.e. opening a WIndow in the Finder) becomes a matter of 10 seconds etc...
There there is the Video RAM problem which is pertaining to FPCx and all versions of OS X. This problems shows itself after working intensively in FPCx... All one needs to do is to do LOTS of editing in the Timeline... On my setup with 1GB of Video RAM it will take approx. (depending on how many tasks (Edits) I am completing) 20 minutes to reveal itself. To begin with (after opening FCPX) it simply flies. No matter what I do, there is no lag just a VERY responsive app... Then after those 20 min. the CTI (Playhead) starts lagging and jumping in play. The skimmer starts choking, menus (Inspector etc) are opening at turtle-tempo...  However, my Free System RAM is still @ about 10 GB.... so lots and lots of RAM... The video RAM is what is being used and NOT SET FREE.
Rebooting the Mac at this point is the only remedy. Which is OK... My rMBP boots in 7 seconds. So I am rebooting approx. every 30 minutes in a big session.
Whenever you guys experience these problems, try to take 5 minutes to recap and write to the Feedback. The more scenarios we can provide them with the better their chances of finding the culprit.
I personally find the FCPx crew to be HIGHLY responsive to feedback. THEY def. care

  • SSD in Optical Bay is not working in a Macbook Pro 15" 2012.

Can anyone tell me what can be the problem ? At the beginning I could use the SSD from the Optical Bay to read but not to write. Also was impossible to unmount it. I finally wiped it out with the OCZ TOOLBOX and I updated the firmware, but after that was impossible to create any partition. I removed the SSD form the Optical Bay and I moved it back in the 1st bay. Everything is working fine when is connected in the 1st bay. I finally formated the SSD and I put it back in the optical bay, but I still have the same issue, I can't unmount it or format it and I can only read from the SSD. Have in mind that my OS is running from a different SSD.What can I do with it ?
    Many thanks.

MacBook Pro  / Mozilla Firefox / Netflix / Silverlight Update solved - DON'T DWNLOAD FROM NETFLIX
I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better.  Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG.   However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success.  So here's what I did:
    1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
    2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
    3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
    4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
    5. Go back to the Get  Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
    6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
    7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
    8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

  • Can't resize partition after upgrading to Yosemite (using SSD drive)

I upgraded to 10.10 and using SSD drive now. When I was using OS X 10.8.5, I could freely resize partition but not anymore. I guess because of the SSD drive and the new version of OS X, and Logical Volume Group could be involved. I don't want to waste 80 GB of SSD drive so really looking for a solution now. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.
