MobileMe family force upgrade to iCloud

When I updated to iOS 5 I upgraded my Mobile Me account to iCloud. It warned me that I would not be able to manage the other accounts associated with the MobileMe family account which was fine. It did NOT warn me that the other memebers of my family would not be able to use their accounts unless they upgraded. Is there any way to let them continue using Snow Leopard and iOS 4? There are software reasons to keep them on the older OSes.

Ok, I get that ( I never used MM so I don't know it's features or how the accounts are used ) .
The fact remains that icloud will only work with a single Apple-ID. Of course every member of your family could log in to www.icloud.com and move his/her old ID to become a icloud ID - but the whole syncing features will just be pointless. Everybody in your family then must own his/her own iOS5 device, as iOS5 is no "multi-user" system.
Also in order to sync more then one iOS5 device ( and/or to a Mac or PC ) all these devices and computers need to be singed in with one and the same Apple-ID or there simply is no syncing at all happening. This would limit icloud to be just backups of the account data to the cloud.

  • Can i see a LIST of all the things removed from MobileMe in the upgrade to iCloud?

i have heard so many reports of things changed in MobileMe in the "upgrade" to iCloud, and i want to clarify these prior to switching over (i have already upgraded to iOS5 and 10.7.2) because from what i have heard some of these chages are going to mean a massive LOSS OF INFORMATION!!!
based on how i have been using mobileme for the last 10 years (in it's various incarnations) i have heard that when you update:-
1/ i am going to lose my 100's of photo websites in june 2012 (thanks guys!!)
2/ i am going to lose most of the notes i have added to the over 1500 entries in my AddressBook (and some of those notes are VERY long and perfectly placed since they give me immediate access to data/info on the person/company in AB (this is a TERRIBLE DECISION IF TRUE) becaue apple had given a new charcter limit to Notes
3/ my iphone now does not seem to play anything that was bought from beatport or freebies i have received from DJs (which i belive is linked to the size of the bit rate - some are 14100, rather than the 320 of itunes tracks) and which means i am either going to have to find another music player and/or stop buying music from any one other than itunes <<DUH>>
4/ i have used my mac.com account in itunes to buy a LOT of stuff, different bits of which go on my iphone, ipad, etc (in fact the ipad is used by my mother who would have never ever have bought any apps, so i have adapted the ipad with the apps i think she would like - but i do not want these on my iphone) so am i going to have to repeatedly stop itunes form adding every new purchase from downloading itself to all my apple equipment??????
quite frankly, if all the above is true (and i bet there are more to come ) then it is a ral smack in the face of long time apple users who have bought into the whole iDisk, MobileMe stuff in the past, and who have created a ersonal way of using them - i bought a family pack just so i could put different types of photo website up under my different"family" names - all of which were initially just for me to use!!!!!!!!!!!!
so, please can you publish a list of all the things i am going to lose when i move to the icloud?????????????
sees a fair request, but one which it also seems i have to ask for cos i cannot find a list such as this anywhere on the apple website

You can see a detailed comparison between MobileMe and iCloud, plus general information and some links to Apple Help pages, here:
    http://rfwilmut.net/icloud
Question 2 would be best asked as an individual question in the hope of attracting the attention of someone who is in the same situation and can give you a practical answer: question 3 would best be asked in the iPhone forum.

  • MobileMe Family Master still messing with iCloud accounts

Have been battling with this issue ever since iCloud came along, so I hope somebody has some answers for me:
Here's the situation: I had (well, I guess I still have) a MobileMe family plan with a "master" account and three member accounts (myself, wife, and daughter). The member accounts have all individually been migrated to iCloud and are working fine. However, my wife and daughter are seeing my calendar and address book data on the iDevices (iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touchs). In the other direction, I'm getting their address book and calendar data (note: calendar's not much of an issue, because my wife and I shre our calendars, anyway, and my daughter hardly uses hers).
My "theory" is that, since all three of us are using member accounts, the data is still flowing up to the master and being distributed from there. Would anybody concur?
Now, I assume that, once MobileMe is switched off (is this still planned for June this year?), the problem should solve itself ... or could it cause even further problems? Does anybody know of a way to disable the MobileMe master account? It's not needed, anymore.
    Many thanks!

    > My "theory" is that, since all three of us are using member accounts, the data is still flowing up to the master and being distributed from there. Would anybody concur?
That's impossible, because there was never any data sharing between master and family Mobileme accounts. Each account was independent. Plus the master and family accounts do not exist in iCloud. Every account is independent.
If the same data is appearing on different devices, they MUST be using the same AppleID.

  • Which mobileme account do I upgrade to iCloud first? Master or email only account.

Hi. I have two mobileme accounts that have not been upgraded to iCloud yet.
The first is the master account that I use and the second is an email only account that my father uses which is attached to my master account.
I would like to upgrade both to iCloud but I have received conflicting advice from a couple of Apple stores I have sought advice from. (A couple of Apple employees said do the master account first, the other two said to do the email only first!).
Does it matter in which order I upgrade these accounts to iCloud? ie. should or upgrade the Master account first or the email only account?
    Or doesn't it matter !!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

The OP is asking about upgrading MobileMe, rather than the setting up of iCloud. Though it shouldn't make any difference, I would advise carrying out the migration of the email-only account first, then the master account.
After that, whichever one it is that is wanted as the primary account needs to be entered in System Preferences>iCloud. And of course his father, who uses the email-only account, may have his own user account and can set up the ex-email-only account as a primary account there.

  • Multiple devices, family sharing...iCloud setup

I've so far avoided iCloud because it is very confusing to me. I've read loads of threads, and comprehending it all is still eluding me. Let me explain my setup, what I want to do, and how I'm proposing to do it.
    My Setup:
    5 family members (including myself)
    4 iPhones (2 4S, 1 4 and 1 3S) all with iOS5
    2 iPod Touches with iOS5
1 MBP running Lion with accounts for each family member.
    1 Mini running Lion
3 XP machines, each with accounts for each family member.
The Mini is our "media" computer connected to our TV. It's connected to a network drive which stores all our media, music, books and apps, including everyone's photos via iPhoto.
    My Goal:
Everyone's photos taken by iPhones/iPods on 1 Photostream accessible by the Mini for viewing/storage.
    Everyone with their own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/etc.
Shared iTunes content, again synced with iTunes on Mini
    My Thoughts:
If I am understanding what I've read, I can create an iCloud account which has to be the primary account on all the iPhones/iPods. Then go into Settings on each iOS device and turn off everything I don't want sync'd (Mail, Calendars, Contacts, etc.).
Then for each iPhone/iPod, create an individual iCloud account for each family member, turning on what they want synced on both their iOS device and in their iCloud settings in their accounts on their computers.
For iTunes content sharing, we just keep doing what we've been doing, using the shared iTunes account we already have.
    My Questions/Concerns:
It looks like this will necessitate having 6 iCloud accounts, which I guess will work since we have that many devices; but I'm curious how others could handle a setup like this if they only had 1 device per person?
After all this is set up, could I then have an additional calendar added in somehow which the family uses for adding shared events?
So, does this sound right? Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

    Hi all..
I hope you don't mind me chiming in here, but I see this as a major flaw in the move from MobileMe to iCloud.
Roderick, based on what your requirements are, this sounds like a viable solution.
Here's the spanner in the works:
Q: Can you have more than 1 iCloud account on each iOS device?
Everything I have found so far points to "No".
If you can't, and you all want to sync "common" contacts, iCal events & numbers/pages stuff, then you have to use 1 common iCloud account. But you will not be able to FaceTime or iMessage each other!
    Is my assumption here correct?
I have a MobileMe family pack with 5 me.com addresses.  I have kept the "main" one from migrating, so we currently keep all our contacts & calendars synced with that "main" account in MobileMe.
Simple solution for the time being, but what happens in June 2012 when MobileMe is retired?

  • I can't upgrade to iCloud Drive this morning. How to download an iCloud Numbers file on my Mac today?

Is there any way TODAY to download an iCloud Number document to use on my MacBook Pro's Numbers app?
Yesterday (Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014)  I made some updates on an iCloud Numbers document that I use to share data between my Mac at work and my Mac at home.
This morning (Thursday, September 18, 2014), I can't access iCloud Numbers AT ALL.
There was no warning yesterday that I wouldn't be able to access iCloud Numbers.
When I click on Numbers iCloud a popup that tells me to upgrade to iCloud Drive to use it, but warns that I won't be able to use it on any of my devices that aren't upgraded to iOS 8 or Yosemite Beta. My only choices are "Learn more," "Not Now," or "Upgrade now." "Not now" simply puts me back into iCloud.
I'm not in the position TODAY to upgrade all my Macs all at once, especially to a beta operating system (Yosemite).
With no access to iCloud Numbers on either of my Macs, how do I download the latest version of the numbers document to save it?

I was able to send (email) myself a copy of my iCloud Numbers documents through my iPad Numbers app . Thankfully, they were synced, so I didn't lose anything.
This forced beta OS update has got to be a mistake.

  • Can MobileMe email-only accounts access iCloud?

So I have a MBP running Lion with a MobileMe account and my wife has an email-only address under that MobleMe account. We also sync Address Books, all accessed thru her old MB Core Duo running Snow Leopard, not upgradeable to Lion. If I switch to iCloud will she still be able to access Mail and sync Address Book? Can't find a definitive answer anywhere in the Apple iCloud support pages.... Help please!

I couldn't either. With help from others and a MacWorld article finally got it figured out: You DO want to have two iCloud accounts, but you want one iCloud account to be the source for the Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, iTunes, and PhotoStream on both machines. There is a solution.
The issue: MobileMe account including its own email account, with the user also paying $10 for a second email-only account. The MobileMe account is used for joint Contacts, Calendar, and Safari Bookmarks on two machines, while the main MobileMe mail account was used for mail on one machine and the email-only account was used for mail on the other machine.
We wanted to upgrade to iCloud on both machines and still have joint Contacts, Calendar and Safari bookmarks, plus share our iTunes account and use the new PhotoStream feature on both machines - but preserve the two individual email accounts.
Solution: On the first machine, move to iCloud with everything, using the main MobileMe account name and password. On the second machine, USE THE EMAIL-ONLY ACCOUNT to create a new iCloud account using the username and password for the email only account. That appears to be the critical step: you need to create that new iCloud account with the username and password for the email only account FIRST rather than migrating to iCloud on the second machine using the main MobileMe account name, or else you may permanently lose that second email-only account!
After that, it's all a matter of tweaking the account settings on the other apps to direct to the iCloud account on the first machine.
You will get a screen asking if you want to delete the existing Contacts on that second machine. Do so: DELETE THE EXISTING CONTACTS on that second machine. (Only after backing up your Address Book by using the export function just to be safe.)
Then, WITHIN EACH APPLICATION - Address Book, iTunes, Calendar, Safari - go to the Preferences and set them so that they are tied to the iCloud account for the first machine.
You may need to check your Preferences: for a little while my wife was getting both my mail and hers, until I noticed that within Mail.app she had two accounts: her iCloud account AND my iCloud account. I deleted my account on her machine.

I am puzzled by this. The laptop doesn't need the Apple ID - but iTunes does. I could be missing something but ....
Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?

  • Two MacBooks, Two Users, One MobileMe Family account

My wife and I both have MacBooks (different ones). We have a MobileMe Family account. Each laptop uses are unique MobileMe names, address books, calendars, etc... (i.e. I have an account, she has a MobileMe account). We both also have our own iPhone linked to these accounts respectively.
We also have a 'joint' MobileMe account (email and calendar only). This same joint account is the iTunes account for both of us.
We are still on MobileMe. I see lots of people having problems.
One problem I anticipate we will have is: How will iCloud know how to sync our accounts between hers, mine, and ours? There apparently is only one setting: ON and OFF.
We want our individual MobileMe accounts syncing email and calendars from our MacBooks and iPhones -- but our Joint account (iTunes, email, calendar) syncing to us both.
Is this going to be a mess on iCloud?
Thanks for any tips on how to better prepare for the conversion.

    Roger,
    Thanks for the reply.
I think I understand what you are saying.
I am wondering why the iCloud would be device-dependent. For instance, we have in our home two MacBooks, two iPhones, one iPad, one AppleTV. So, somewhat preciently knowing we'd eventually have more Apple devices, our main account (esp for iTunes) is our joint account. Joint email, calendar, and iTunes/iBooks content. Works great.
So, if we had a family with children with their own accounts, would it then not be possible for each person to have their own accounts and iCloud syncing off of, say, one home computer?
I recall in Steve Jobs's presentation that they 'demoted' the computer to just a device served by iCloud (much like the iPhone, iPad, etc... So, if an iPad can have multiple MobileMe accounts, as a MacBook may, why couldn't iCloud sync them all?
Thanks for the instruction -- just trying to figure out how to get things set up when we go to iCloud (we haven't turned it on yet for this reason).
I see in the discussions forums loads of issues from people switching over.
Maybe the right way to do it is each MacBook retains their accounts. Same with the iPhones. But turn off the other, shared accounts. Turn on iCloud...let it see everything, get synced: Computer A with iPhone A with iCloud Account A (email and contacts only). And Computer B with iPhone B with iCloud Account B (email and contacts only). Then add in the shared iCloud Account (email/calendar/iTunes only).
    Thoughts?

  • MobileMe account failed email verification, iCloud unusable

    Hello there!
I was a longtime MobileMe user with my email address ([email protected]). A couple of days ago I switched my .me account to an iCloud one.
I also had another appleId just for my iTunes stuff. (my_name).
Today iOS5 is being released and I've been having several issues. The Find my Friends and iMessage features don't work with my new iCloud account. As I try to log in in the apps, i just get a message that my account needs to be verified. I tried that online at appleid.apple.com ... but I'm not ale to log in. an "unknown error" occured.
When I try to log in with my iTunes apple ID (my_name) , I can log in perfectly.
So, I upgraded to iCloud and can't use ****. Making a new account isn't really an option as I use my .me email address for a lot of things. (it's my primary email address since over 2 years).
I saw that I could request assistance by phone, but that I have to use a pay 29$ just to get in touch with them.
I'm trying to hold of this option. But I'm seriously annoyed!! There's obviously something wrong at serverside. I hope they fix this ASAP. Anyone else having these problems?
