MobileMe Gallery and international characters

(May this serve as a warning to others.)
I recently had trouble posting some vacation photos to a Gallery. My initial organization included a roll named Málaga (that's an accent on the first 'a'; it's a city in Spain). Later I organized other albums but the files' pathnames still contain the accented letter.
Posting an album to a MobileMe Gallery resulted in the error:
"An error occurred with the publication of album "[whatever]." Request to the server failed".
There were no errors listed in my Console logs.
I've found Apple warnings about having punctuation marks in photos and videos but this isn't quite the same issue.
The problem was very stubborn and I didn't realize the cause until I created another iPhoto Library and happened to use different names for rolls, etc.
A bug report has been filed.

Neil:
Using non standard asci characters in site names has always been a problem. Thanks for the heads up. Here's some information I've gleamed from the iWeb forum regarding site/page names:
Renaming a website or webpage
You can rename a site or page at any time by double-clicking its name in the site organizer and typing the new name.
The page name appears at the top of the visitor's browser.
The site name is included in the website's address (URL):
http://web.mac.com/your account name/ or
http://web.me.com/your account name/
Renamed pages and sites (as well as the site's URL) change online the next time you publish.
IMPORTANT: If you rename a site, previously created links to your site won't work; be sure to notify your visitors, especially your blog or podcast subscribers.
iWeb now converts spaces in site names to "_". Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish.
Other characters that aren't recommended for use in website names are: forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point !, question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and double quotation marks ("). Using these characters may result in names with strange numbers in them.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • MobileMe Gallery and iPhoto 11

    Before, (iphoto 9), I can upload, view, play slide shows with photos in my MobileMe gallery very quickly. But with iphoto 11, it is forever pending, pending, pending... what did I do wrong?

    I am not happy. I hope the guy who wrote the new codes will just talk with the people who wrote the iPhoto 9 codes and also talk with the guys who wrote the MobileMe Gallery codes. It gives people the impression that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. This may affect the Apple stock price. Wonder if Steve is aware of the problem; does he use iPhoto 11 and MobileMe; does he permit it; and what is he doing about it. This has been taking way too long to resolve.

  • MobileMe Gallery and problems with new password

    Hi. I'm using iPhoto 09, and have posted many MobileMe galleries over the years. Recently, I changed my MobileMe password. Now, iPhoto tells me that an "error occurred with the publication of album 'XYZ' Your MobileMe account information is not correct. The provided login or password is not valid" and it prompts me to return to MobileMe Preferences to re-enter my correct login and password. Well, the trouble is that I've done this many times. (Which also causes sync problems - but that's another story.) And though my System Preferences are now correct, I still cannot successfully update a MobileMe gallery in iPhoto. I checked my settings in the Keychain, and all is fine. I also trashed iPhoto preferences, but the problem still remains. Any thoughts on how to solve this irritating problem? Thanks!

    I found another solution based on this posting.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=689762
    Works perfectly.
    +I have the same problem and started a thread about it on Apple's discussion board, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread....art=0&tstart=0+
    +First, I'd suggest sending Apple feedback on it (select "Provide iPhoto Feedback" from the iPhoto menu).+
    +When you change your MM password, you need to enter the new password in MobileMe in System Preferences. When you select MobileMe in System Preferences, it will (correctly) say that your password has changed and ask for the new one.+
    +It looks like the problem with iPhoto is that when you enter the new password in MobileMe preferences, the keychain entry for it isn't being updated. Look for publish.me.com in Keychain Access. It will probably have the old password. Changing it there and then signing out/in in MM System Preferences seems to fix the problem with iPhoto. If not, try deleting publish.me.com in Keychain Access and then sign out/in to MobileMe in System Preferences.+
    +Give it a try and post what happens.+

  • Messenger and international characters

    I posted this earlier this month on the blackberryforums.com and crackberry.com web sites but didn't really get a answer. Hopefully it will have a better outcome here
    Hi, we switched from the 7250 to the 8330 model (what an upgrade!). I have a question though regarding the 83xx messenger, I can't get international characters to work (by holding the key and moving the trackball). It works in other application (like while sending an email or in the address book) but not in messenger. We did not have that problem with the 7250 model.
    Is this a known issue/limitation? My firmware version is 4.3.0.124 and my carrier is Telus.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    I just joined this community, and of course I started my search for this same issue.
    After spending more than 4 hours with Tech Support from my Carrier, then going to the Carrier's Store and wasting 2 more hours, then back to the phone with the carriers tech support this time with a spanish speaking cust. svc. agent, this issue is still unresolved, I think, and everyone else who tried to help as well, that this is a GLITCH in Blackberry's phones, I have a Curve 8330, and a Storm, and they both do not allow you to type international characters in SMS ....GRRRRRRRR! yes it works in everything else except there.
    I tried the new Tour at the store and it does allow the international characters in SMS messages, but of course they wanted me to dig into my pocked to pay for the difference.
    I think we should all come together and write something to Blackberry and let them know that we need this fixed, it's aggravating having to compensate through apologies and typing extra characters just to be able to communicate in a different language with these phones.
    I think that these Smart Phones, are not so smart after all....LOL

  • XMLTYPE and International Characters

    Database: Oracle9i
    Characterset: US7ASCII
    I am trying to insert a very small xml document into an XMLTYPE column in a table.
    My xml document, however, contains international characters like French and Spanish letters with their accompanying accent marks.
    I have tried setting various encoding schemes in the encoding attribute on the xml document but none of them work.
    The parser stops at the first international character and complains that it is invalid.
    Is there anything I can do to insert these characters into my XMLTYPE column without complaint?
    Thanks.

  • Mobileme Gallery and iCloud

    I have a Photo Gallery app on my ipad to access all albums on my iMac.  With iCloud will I be able to access any album on my Mac on demand like I can now with Photo Gallery app?

                                    SHALL I CRY?
    I thought that Apple and I were kind of like long-time partners and that our relationship was strong and friendly. My MobileMe Account says Member Since: Jan 6, 2000. I believed that Apple respected me and would continue to make my life better. Apple has helped me to be creative and let me show to family, friends and colleagues who I was plus I could freely express myself to other members of a great Apple community around the world.
    But now Apple has decided to shut down the creative works we have built together in my Gallery and on my webpages, using the tools and the support that Apple provided, without even considering its impact to me or to the Apple community as a whole. Then Apple faithful from all over kindly asked Apple to correct this obvious mistake with their postings within the Apple Communities, Facebook and other social media.
                                  Apple didn’t reply.
    Then Command Guru, an Italian software house specializing in Apple Apps, organized a petition and got more than 7500 Apple users from all around the world to raise the issue and identify the services that they didn’t want to lose. http://www.commandguru.com/blog/icloud_petition_1st_round
                          Apple didn't reply again.
    I am all for change when change means progress. But I don't feel that flatly dropping long-term clients or kicking them in the face is positive change. No longer partner and supported, likeable and friendly Apple has become arrogant and that make me sad.
    Apple has quickly become a huge company and young, arrogant MBA's are probably driving it forward. With Steve gone, I’m certain that Tim has had to make a very special effort just to keep that Apple spirit alive. The damage that has already been done to Apple’s image hasn’t even registered yet. It’s like a flashback to an earlier time, when Steve himself was driven from Apple by those who overlooked that spirit. Driven by greed, they never recognized that it was the spirit that made Apple so successful. Maybe it’s time for a refresher on
    ‘how to win friends and influence people’; the basics are all there.
                            Apple, save your spirit.

  • JDK1.3 + Tomcat  and International Characters-- Working!

    I am involved with a project that has people using a "command/ prompt" based system to enter data. Lets assume this is a simple java program that uses system.out. The data they are entering uses international characters such as the character.and others. Now that the data was captured I wanted to display the data through JSP on a webpage. When doing so I ran into a problem where the where translated into ?. Thus started the journey
    After much research, and alot of trial and error I came up with the following Test JSP that finally works
    ---- copy / past this to file and type it out from a windows command prompt ---
    <%@page contentType="text/html; charset=Cp1252" %>
    <% String test = ""; %>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; CHARSET=CP437">
    </HEAD>
    <BODY>
    TEST: XX <%=test%> XX
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    When you do this you will see for the test string. By the way if you use Visual Slick you will see the characters properly as apposed to lets say note pad.
    Putting this file in a jsp and runing it under tomcat 4.01 you will see the expected result mainly:
    TEST: XX  XX
    As you can see though by the file the character set the jsp is set to use is cp1252 but the meta tag uses cp437.
    which gives the desired effect of properly printing the characters as I would have hoped.
    So here is my question:
    Am I correct in assuming that the windows command prompt uses CP1252 as a character set (there for any dos / non-windows tool uses the same thing) and that Windows graphical ie notepad, and webpages uses CP437.
    Since this seems to be correct. Is this the right way of doing this? Seems a bit hard coded. I have not tried this on UNIX or a unix based text browser but I suspect this will not work on them. What is the correct way to do this?
    Thanks
    Mike..

    Wow, that seems like a sticky little issue to have overcome. I can offer you no better way to do it, but can wish you luck in your future endeavors!!!!

  • Ovi and international characters

    Hi,
    I started using Ovi sync services due to the end of Goosync free services. Ovi works great, except for international characters (I write in Spanish). I tried changing the way my browser displays text but it seems that the problem is in the synchronization itself ¿Does anyone have a workaround for this?
    Thanks in advance

  • Sort MobileMe Gallery and Facebook Albums

    How can I sort MobileMe and Facebook albums by date (or manually)?

    Hi Mark.
    I had the same issue and, through trial and error, think I may have found the solution - at least for MobileMe (I haven't used the Facebook publishing yet).
    If you log in to your MobileMe photo gallery web app at http://www.me.com/ then you get a list of your albums down the left side. You can drag each album up and down the list to order them.
    (not sure if the next step is actually required or if you just need to wait a bit...)
    Next, open up your iPhoto app and let it sync the new MobileMe album order.
    Finally, go to your gallery page on the web at http://gallery.me.com/your_username and hopefully you should see the albums appear in the order you set.
    If they still appear in the wrong order, try refreshing the gallery page, clearing your browser cache etc...
    Hope this works for you.

  • IPhoto MobileMe Gallery and Passwords !@#

    Appears to be an issue with posted iPhoto Galleries with personalized passwords. I have noticed that iPhoto does not consistently publish iPhoto Galleries with functioning passwords (or more accurately, MobileMe does not push down passwords evenly to all of its load balanced servers).
    Some individual photos will come through following username/password authentication, while others will fail username/password authentication and come up with broken images. I have an iPhoto album on MobileMe that refuses to be viewed entirely by the published username/password pair.
    To make matters worse, if a user fails authentication, they are prompted to re-enter again, and again and again ...
    Latest patches on OS, and Apps - seems like we need one more.
    Golan.

    Golan:
    Have you tried the first line, general all purpose fixes: 1 - close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps; 2 - repair disk permissions with Disk Utility.
    After that you can try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. Make a backup copy of the library beforehand as a precaution against a repair going bad.
• Should I be able to see my MobileMe Gallery photos in iPhoto?

    I posted this problem a couple of months ago but received no answer - I'm hoping that someone else may have experienced the same problem or someone can explain what it is that I'm doing wrong -
    I upgraded from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '09 in June 2009. I have nine MobileMe Gallery albums. Eight of these albums were created and uploaded using iPhoto '08 and only one with iPhoto '09. I have just noticed a problem which, I believe, has only happened since my upgrade and it's a strange one.
    While scrolling through the Photos in my iPhoto 09 Library I noticed that for those photos that appeared in an album uploaded to MobileMe Gallery using iPhoto 08 I have the photo and immediately next to (after) it a white dotted outline of a blank/black space with the Title of the previous photo under it. If I select this 'blank' photo and drag it to the Trash it removes the photo from my MobileMe Gallery album!
    This applies to every photo uploaded to all 8 MobileMe Gallery albums with iPhoto 08. The behaviour is not repeated in the images uploaded to the one album I have uploaded to the MobileMe Gallery using iPhoto 09.
    Before I realised the significance of these 'blank' photos I selected them as I was scrolling through my Library in Photo view and moved them to the iPhoto Trash! Then I discovered that doing so removed them from both the album on my MobileMe Gallery and the MobileMe Gallery album that I see in the left hand column of iPhoto.
    WIll I have to live with these 'blanks' in my Photos view forever?
    I would be grateful if anyone can suggest how I might be able to fix this problem.
    Cheers
    Tricia
    PS I have now created another 5 MobileMe albums using iPhoto '09. All these display correctly in my iPhoto 'Photos' view as well as on my MobileMe Gallery so I can confirm that the 'blank' problem only relates to MobileMe albums I created and uploaded using iPhoto '08.
    Surely other people have experienced the same problem??

    Many thanks for your prompt reply. I don't have a backup drive with me at the moment but as soon as I get back to my Time Capsule I'll backup and do as you suggest. Hopefully, that will solve the problem.
    Cheers
    Tricia
