MobileMe Gallery - image sharpness

I'm noticing that when I create a MobileMe Gallery from Aperture 3.0.3 the images look unsharp and fuzzy. The same images look perfect to me on-screen in Aperture and when printed to my Epson 3800.
I have even adjusted some test images and set the sharpening to it's max value but don't see any noticeable difference on MobileMe.
I've searched here and Google but can't see any mention of this problem - surely it's not just my images that look unsharp ?
Mark

It's understandable that photos in your Mobile Me galleries look soft, and as if they need additional sharpening. The root cause, however, is that the displayed image is just too low resolution if you try and display anything near full-screen on a reasonably-sized monitor.
When you build Mobile Me galleries with a hi-res .jpg file, the Mobile Me server makes up to 4 copies of it:
large.jpg (Optimized or Actual size, if specified)
medium.jpg (427 × 285)
square.jpg (160x160)
web.jpg (1024x640)
The largest image the Mobile Me servers will ever display in a web page is the web.jpg version, even if you specified Allow Downloading of Actual Sized images in your Mobile Me gallery settings - that setting only applies to images you download, not display. No amount of pre-sharpening will make that image look sharp if you display it larger than 1024x640 in your web browser.
(This resolution limit is one of the reason I mostly gave up on Mobile Me galleries except for those quickie "fun photos for friends and family" slideshows - which, in fairness, is really the application that Apple intended for these galleries. Though I've mostly switched to Flickr galleries, they're actually not that much better...)

  • "Removed" images still appear in MobileMe gallery online

    1. Made a MobileMe gallery in Aperture
    2. Published it. Gallery appears OK on MobileMe.
    3. In Aperture, removed two images from album (Right-click->Remove From Album)
    4. Sync from Aperture, expecting images to disappear from MobileMe online
    5. Pictures that were removed appear again in Aperture
    6. Remove pictures again, re-sync, multiple times
    7. Removed pictures finally stay gone in Aperture, but are still on MobilMe
How do I delete them from the online gallery?
    Thanks.

I haven't experienced this, but you can always go delete them on the sever side. e.g., logon to the Mobile Me site and delete them from the gallery there. It does sounds like a temporary syncing glitch as mentioned above.

  • Image link to MobileMe Gallery?

    I'm having a strange problem.
I've created a site and I'm busy trying to use a few images to link to various MobileMe Galleries. The issue I'm having is that iWeb fails to save my link once I enter it into the appropriate Inspector tab.
I will literally click on an image, hit Inspector, fill in the web address, and then move on to the next image. I'll repeat the process and then return to my previous image (just to check and make sure I've got everything down right) only to find the link entry empty!
Even when I did manage (and this only happened once) to link every image, the links turned out to be incorrect after publishing. My links would somehow change somehow and point to the wrong MobileMe Gallery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are these iPhoto Web Galleries that you're trying to link to? If so, have you tried dragging the galley onto the iWeb page from the Media Browser? This test page is what I'm talking about.
When you add the URL click on the open in new page checkbox, go click on the page and then click back on the picture to see if it stuck. Then you can uncheck that box is desired.

  • Can I make a *smaller* base image for a mobileme gallery?

So as near as I can tell, I cannot set the maximum size for an image in a mobileme gallery...is there a preset for that? I realize that I can disable downloading, but if I want a base image that is more "facebooky" in resolution, can I specify that?
I'm looking for something smaller than the default "1024x680" that I seem to be getting. I'm seeing any effect with the image export presets.
    -John

OK, thanks for the copy/paste info, TD. However, when I go
    File>Import to Library>documents>
The picture/document I want is grayed out, and can't be lifted.
I also Print>Saved as PDF, but that document is also grayed out. None of the other options after File>Import shows anything that looks like what I want.
I also highlighted the map on Pages, then "right clicked" (Cont+Click), and then Capture Selection from screen", but I don't know what I have after highlighting. It sounds like I took a picture, and there is a highlighted image of what I "captured" but when I tried to drag to iPhoto, it disappeared.

  • Automator images to mobileme Gallery in iPhoto??

I have numerous images that I may want to place in a .me gallery for clients to view. Or should they be on a web page or some other folder? it is ok if many view different images. But I prefer to do it with automator.
I can send them now to an iphoto album and drag the images to a gallery. But it is awkward.

Do you have your MobileMe gallery setup so others can upload to it? If so then iPhoto is checking the site to update the gallery in iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Should I be able to see my MobileMe Gallery photos in iPhoto?

I posted this problem a couple of months ago but received no answer - I'm hoping that someone else may have experienced the same problem or someone can explain what it is that I'm doing wrong -
I upgraded from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '09 in June 2009. I have nine MobileMe Gallery albums. Eight of these albums were created and uploaded using iPhoto '08 and only one with iPhoto '09. I have just noticed a problem which, I believe, has only happened since my upgrade and it's a strange one.
While scrolling through the Photos in my iPhoto 09 Library I noticed that for those photos that appeared in an album uploaded to MobileMe Gallery using iPhoto 08 I have the photo and immediately next to (after) it a white dotted outline of a blank/black space with the Title of the previous photo under it. If I select this 'blank' photo and drag it to the Trash it removes the photo from my MobileMe Gallery album!
This applies to every photo uploaded to all 8 MobileMe Gallery albums with iPhoto 08. The behaviour is not repeated in the images uploaded to the one album I have uploaded to the MobileMe Gallery using iPhoto 09.
Before I realised the significance of these 'blank' photos I selected them as I was scrolling through my Library in Photo view and moved them to the iPhoto Trash! Then I discovered that doing so removed them from both the album on my MobileMe Gallery and the MobileMe Gallery album that I see in the left hand column of iPhoto.
WIll I have to live with these 'blanks' in my Photos view forever?
I would be grateful if anyone can suggest how I might be able to fix this problem.
    Cheers
    Tricia
PS I have now created another 5 MobileMe albums using iPhoto '09. All these display correctly in my iPhoto 'Photos' view as well as on my MobileMe Gallery so I can confirm that the 'blank' problem only relates to MobileMe albums I created and uploaded using iPhoto '08.
Surely other people have experienced the same problem??

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I don't have a backup drive with me at the moment but as soon as I get back to my Time Capsule I'll backup and do as you suggest. Hopefully, that will solve the problem.
    Cheers
    Tricia

  • Uploading album to MobileMe Gallery crashes iPhoto '09

Please help. I've been trying to get a couple of new albums posted to my MobileMe Gallery (which I have done many times before without a problem) but my iPhoto '09 keeps crashing at some point during the upload and I think it happens later, after it uploads most of the album. At first I thought I was simply running out of space on my iDisk, but I purchased an extra 20 Gigs of space and that didn't help. Then I thought it was timing out due to my laptop going to sleep, so I set it so it never sleeps and never screen saves and that didn't help either. These albums are bigger than my past albums - one has about 470 photos (which is close to the max of 500 for a mobileme gallery album) and the other has about 130 videos. I've posted the same kind of videos many times in the past without any problems so I'm not sure why it's failing this time. Any ideas? Maybe I have one video that is just too big? There is one that is about 200 MB. I don't know if there is an error message when it crashes but I do have the report, which I will paste below.
Does anyone see anything in the error report that gives a clue as to what might be causing iPhoto to crash? It's a problem because when I restart my iPhoto, the partial album on my MobileMe Gallery is no longer linked to my iPhoto, so I can't resume the upload nor can I edit the titles. I have to delete the album on MobileMe and delete the album in my iPhoto and try again.
I tried getting support from Apple Care but because I bought the iPhoto '09 upgrade over 90 days ago, I can't get free support.
    Thanks for your help!

OK - so I have tried deleting my iPhoto preferences, repairing my keychain, rebuilding my iPhoto library, uninstalling Safari Beta 4 and I still can't get this one photo album (that has 140 videos) to upload properly to MobileMe. I left it to upload when I went to bed and when I woke up, I saw that my iPhoto quit itself yet again. So again, if there was an error message, I missed it. Before I left for work, I started an upload of an album of just photos to see if that works, thinking that perhaps there's a video in the other album that iPhoto is getting stuck on. If that works, I suppose I could try uploading the videos one at a time, right? Just keep adding them to the Gallery till something fails? If I find that the album of photos failed, then I think my only choice will be to pay $49 for AppleCare's assistance. I love how one solution they already gave me (for free) is to purchase a new laptop. Yeah, that would solve it! LOL

  • Automating creation of MobileMe Gallery from audio files in iTunes

    Hi
I am wanting to create a MobileMe Gallery of a few songs in my iTunes library. The only option to do this is to wrap MP3 files in a .mov container as MobileMe gallery doesn't support audio files. I have worked out all the necessary steps to do this and would now like to automate the process. Here is the sequence I follow manually:
    1. Select tracks in iTunes
    2. Convert these Apple Lossless files to MP3
    3. Add MP3 files to playlist
    4. For each track in playlist:
    5. Convert album image (.jpg) in album folder to max 640 width (so movies will play on iPhone)
    6. Open resulting image in Quicktime Pro
    7. Open Audio File in Quicktime Pro
    8. Copy Image and Paste into Audio File in Quicktime Pro
    9. Share File to Email using Quicktime Pro (this is the best way I've found of creating a small .mov file which just creates a container the same size as the image file and the audio file - presumably there's a way of exporting in the same way)
    10. Drag .mov file created from Email created to MobileMe Gallery in iPhoto.
    11. Repeat for each track
So I am looking for a way of automating this as much as possible, and wondering if applescript or automator would be the best way to go.
Ideally I would also like the script/automation to be able to create a .mov file slideshow of all images in the album folder (sometimes there is more than one image there), dividing the number of images by the length of the track (perhaps using the 'Add to selection and scale' feature in Quicktime Pro).
Finally one issue I am experiencing - converting the image file to max width 640 does allow the movie file to be played in the MobileMe Gallery from an iPhone, but the file that opens in the Movie Player on the iPhone doesn't show the image(s) in the .mov file, it just plays the audio. I wonder why this is happening?
Any advice on any of this would be much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Nick

  • MobileMe Gallery Widgets - 3 Curious Questions

Have created and published an iWeb site which basically consists of one page, onto which I’ve positioned six MobileMe Gallery widgets. In the window for each of those widgets I’ve selected a particular MobileMe Gallery published from Aperture, each of which already has one particular image designated as its Key Photo.
So now what’s left -- and what I’ve searched extensively but still can’t figure out -- is:
    1) How do I turn OFF the automatic “slideshow preview” going on inside each of those six Gallery Widgets, and make it so they each display only the Key Photo for that Gallery (at least until the user mouses over a particular widget, activating the scrub/scan feature to manually preview all the images contained in that Gallery)?
    2) How do I set each widget window to “fit” all the preview thumbs inside its dimensions, rather than arbitrarily hacking off the tops and bottoms of all the vertically-oriented images, which for many shots just looks arbitrary, amateurish, and really ugly?
    3) What is the current status of that ridiculous bug which didn’t allow the Gallery Widget to display a Gallery which had been published using the “Hide album on my Gallery home page” option? I do ultimately need to have that option checked, but have left it unchecked for now just to make sure the iWeb site containing the widgets would actually publish.
So -- have the iWeb people and the MobileMe people FINALLY got this bug fixed, or do I still need to hold off activating that “Hide album...” option, and just let my professional Galleries be all mixed together with my personal ones? (Which again just looks arbitrary and amateurish, and encourages one to check out third-party solutions -- at least until such time as the different programming groups at Apple decide to actually talk to each other, and make programs which can interact in truly fluid, intuitive, and meaningful ways.)
My 2¢ -- on top of 3 questions. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John Bertram

#1 - are you referring to the "skimming" of photos as you move the cursor over the gallery? That's javascript controlled I believe and would require knowledge of javascript and widgets. You might ask Cyclosaurer as he's the resident expert on javascript and widgets.
No, no, no -- I'm fine with the skimming, in fact I like that feature. I'm talking about the fact that EACH of the six different MobileMe Gallery widgets, from the moment I dragged each one onto the iWeb page I was creating and selected which already-published Gallery it should link to, began showing each of the different images contained in that Gallery/Album, changing to the next one every second or two. This happened completely on its own, I did not (at least not intentionally) select or activate anything, and it happens in ALL the widget windows, even though the mouse is not skimming over ANY of them.
It continues (again, in every widget window, and completely on its own) when I save the page, it continues when I publish the page, it continues when I visit the page online. The only thing which does stop it -- temporarily -- is when I do mouse over a particular widget window and manually skim. But the moment I stop skimming, this "automatic slideshow preview" (I don't know what else to call it) kicks back in.
Is this normal? Or is this some weird aberration peculiar to my system?
The added annoyance is that when you click on one of the widgets, instead of going to that Gallery in its full album view, it goes to a single frame view of whichever image happened to be being displayed at the time you clicked, requiring the user to then click on the "Back to Album" button in the upper left to get their bearings. Which again makes me wonder -- is this normal?
#2 - Again, you're referring to the skimming, right? Since it's a square shape the photos would have to be square to be able to be scaled exactly. Since it's only a "skim" of what's inside being perfectly scaled isn't that necessary.
It certainly wouldn't be as annoying if I could switch off this "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour as described above. (Though even for the skim function, I still think it would make sense to have the option to have the images auto scale to fit completely within the widget window -- which is not square, by the way -- or at least on my system appears to only be sizeable as a horizontal rectangle, to a maximum size of 320x260 pixels. This orientation works fine for previewing horizontally-oriented images, but looks butt-ugly when completely decapitating various groups of people in vertically-aligned shots, of which I happen to have many.)
In any case, if an auto-scale option to fit all image preview thumbs within the widget window (even for mere skimming) is something I need to add to my Feature Request list, that's fine. It's this bizarre, completely on its own "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour I'm still trying to understand.
#3 - it still exists. If you don't want it to be displayed in your overall MMe gallery with the rest of the individual galleries Apple isn't letting it be published alone.
Just to make sure we're talking about the same bug, in an ideal world I DON'T want these particular Gallery/Albums to be displayed as part of my overall MMe Gallery page, but I DO want them to be the designated content of the MMe Gallery WIDGETS which I'm including on the specific iWeb page in question. And if this bug still has not been fixed, then it appears I and many others are still S.O.L. for what should be a simple and obvious bit of formatting.
Send your 2¢ worth to apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html. We're just users like yourself and can't do anything about it.
Rest assured I will. What's one more page after the hundreds I've already sent them?
I'm just a bit stunned that this particular bug hasn't been dealt with already. And it only reinforces my firm belief (see the thread at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1996786&tstart=0)
that Apple desperately needs an Inter-App Czar, someone with the carte-blanche power to literally FORCE different programming teams to make all Apple apps not only play nicely together, but to play intelligently and intuitively and creatively together!

  • How to publish a second version to mobileme gallery?

I use Aperture to publish to my MobileMe gallery.  I can not, however, get both the original version and a second version of a master file to publish; only the original publishes.  When I look on the left side of Aperture in the respective MobileMe gallery folder, both the original and the edited version are there.  But, only the original publishes to the online gallery.  What do I need to do to publish the edited version also?  Thanks.

You might also want to read up on stacks in the Aperture users Manual.
Start with An Overview of Stacking Images to see just what stacks are intended for and how they work. Especially pay attention to this from this section:
A stack is a set of similar or related images from which one image will be selected for use
Most users both new and not so new run into problems with stacks because they are trying to use them for things they're not really intended for.
If you find yourself in a situation where the stacks limiting you to only being able to get at one image in it is causing problems you might be better off using albums instead.

  • Metadata in mobileme gallery

I created a MobileMe gallery and the metadata isn't there when I look at the info tab when a picture is selected. How do I get the metadata to show up?

Go to the Settings in the Moobileme Gallery menu in Aperture. Towards the right corner of Aperture. In order for this info show, you have to select Downloading of Optimized Images. Do you want people to be able to download your photos?

  • File names in Mobileme Gallery

How do I get the file names of my images to show in MobileMe gallery ?
I now get the file name with the #20 wherever there is a space in my original file name.
I'm using file referenced on a HD.

    My mistake
I had forgotten that it's just what Aperture does for some
    unreasonable reason !
    It puts 20 if there's space ? !

  • 'Empty' photo frames for MobileMe Gallery albums

I upgraded from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '09 last month.
Has anyone else encountered this behaviour - is it normal? Can I simply go to the Trash and drag these 'blank' images back, then sync and hope that they return to the MobileMe Gallery albums?
WIll I have to live with these 'blanks' in my Photos view forever?
Here are two screenshots to show what I'm talking about - the first one is how the deleted images appear in the Trash and the second is an example of how each image now appears in the iPhoto library Photo view.

I would be grateful if anyone can suggest how I might be able to fix this problem.
    Cheers

  • How to add uploaded photos (not from aperture) in Mobileme Gallery to a project

I shared some photos using a mobileme gallery where I allowed friends to upload their photos to the gallery.  Now the gallery exists with both the photos from my aperture library (and project) and my friends photos (which appear in aperture with a little symbol).
I would like to have the photos that were uploaded by my friends to be added to a new project without moving or erasing them in the mobileme gallery.  Is there a simple way to do this? I know if I select photos from a project and drag and drop them to another project aperture moves the photos but I don't know if this is how aperture handles mobileme galleries in the inspector.
    Jeff

Just drag an image from the MobileMe Gallery to a project it will copy the image, not move it. Aperture will move images that are stored locally in the library but since these images uploaded by friends are only stored on the MobileMe servers, Aperture will make a copy when you drag them to a project.

  • MobileMe Gallery Widget Broke, MobileMe Support says to call Applecare

This one has me, and mobileme, stumped. The resulting pick list in the Mobileme Gallery widget has now become unsynced with the actual mobileme galleries online. So while I can update existing widgets on this page, I can't add a new one. A work around was found (see the last Red Phase gallery, which was put on the page in a conventional way - but lacks the features of the widget of course. Mobileme Chat referred me to Applecare Phone Support, which of course does not work in the middle of the Himalayas. Anyone know the underpinnings of that widget? Thx!

This is a problem that been going on for a while (since Snow Leopard I believe). I've not found a solution other than what you've done, link a photo to the MMe gallery page. You can link the photo to the individual photo page of the gallery rather than the thumbnail page. That would give you the same appearance as the widgets give you, i.e. use this link: http://gallery.me.com/studiosphoenix#100173/Altf4_Red01&bgcolor=black
By the way, the album covers gallery's link is broken. The only area of the image that works as a link are the two words Album Cover. Clicking anywhere else gives no results.
