MobileMe problems! "Error occurred while publishing file..."

Is anyone else getting an "error occurred while publishing file" message when they try to publish their iWeb sites to MobileMe? This happens all the time. As a result, all my red icons in the iWeb window remain red.
I have tried renaming one of the site folders in MobileMe to see if that would eliminate the problem -- the program would think it was putting a new site on the Internet, instead of updating an existing one. That didn't work.
If anyone has any advice, I'd be grateful.

Me too. I went to the Apple store today as I have tried everything. Everything was fine until I updated to iLife 09. The advice I was given was to delete the site from my iDisk and then republish the whole thing - so as to start from fresh - but guess what?- same problem.
I got this error message.
Publish Error
An error occurred while publishing file “/private/var/folders/ia/iabx77EFHCGu5JUdA-gS+++TI/TemporaryItems/com.apple.iWeb403_TEMP_255806071_2/sites/SukiHutchinson/Media/10 Left Bank Two - Theme From Vision On-1.mp3”. Try publishing again later.
Any help would be appreciated - the mp3 file was fine before and it is not a DRM.
Thanks

  • An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/Jim and Steph's Si

I'm guessing this is a common message most see when they try to publish their website. Reason I say this, is it is the only message I have recieved in the last week when trying to use this faulty software.
Here it is again if you missed it:
An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Jim and Steph's Site/Jim's Blog”.
I got this MacBook week ago yesterday. Totally excited to share pictures and blog information. Spent 99 dollars or close to it for a mac account to simply share this information on the web. The first four pages (all pictures), I published worked well. Then I updated to iWeb 1.1.1 and tried to publish with blogs and more pictures and it won't work. Now all that I published before does not even come up. I emailed support here on mac.com and got the generic reply that I have already read on this forum. I tired as many fixes as I could to no avail. Two questions:
    1. Any ideas to fix this problem?
    2. Can you get your money back?
    Sorry this was so long.
    Thanks everyone,
    Jim B

    Jim...
Try doing a "Publish All to .Mac" if nothing else works for you. And if I could make a recommendation, it probably wouldn't be a bad thing to simplify your site name (Jim and Steph's Site) and eliminate the apostrophes (also in Jim's Blog). A longer site URL with complexities such as punctuation and spaces and even capitalization can potentially wreak havoc on your site navigation and function. Simplifying your site and page names will at the very least lead to shorter and more recognizable URLs...and when you start to add more pages it will also make the navigation menu at the top of your pages look "cleaner". Think simple names, like "oursite" and "HeSays" or "SheSays"
    Just a suggestion.

  • An error occurred while publishing file...

    Hello all,
I've had iWeb for about three weeks now, and have been unable to fully publish my page. I log into .Mac just fine, upload just fine, and publish the first few pages just fine, but once iWeb starts to publish a blog or podcast page, I get a message, "An error occurred while publishing file..." and it gives me the name of a photos or mp3 I've dropped on the page. I've tried switching files, reorganizing pages; I've deleted everything and completely rebuilt the site from scratch; I've repaired disk permissions, upgraded to 1.01, loaded files manually to my iDisk--you name it, I've tried it. It is always different files, as well. On multiple attempts, it actually loads successfully files it has errored on previously, only to error on a different file. I've considered deleting my blog and podcast pages until an update comes out to fix this problem, but I don't feel it fair to have purchased this program just to wait for it to be fixed before I can use it.
I cannot fully publish my page, and it's becoming very frustrating. If anyone could lend some advice, it would be much obliged.
    The URL is as follows:

Your best bet is to locate that image on your hard disk and make sure that there are no problems with it opening outside iWeb.
Also I have seen some mention somewhere (I cant find it) to using special characters !@£$%^&*() etc... in keywords in iPhoto, having caused problems.
Otherwise take this image out of iWeb, and publish without it, then add it back in and try to publish again, the old try and try again method!

  • Publish Error - An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/X"

    Hello everyone,
I've been using mac for about 10 years now and have finally decided to try out this iWeb application. Spent several hours putting the site together... fun... but when I hit the publish button, the following error popped up.
    Publish Error
An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites/iWeb/X". (X being my site name which also happens to be my .mac account name.
So I've spent another 3 hours trying it over and over again but still no luck. So I've searched this forum and see if there's any tips. Found a lot of solutions but none of them seem to help. I've deleted all the folders and file on my 'Sites' folder on the iDisk. Closed all running apps before hitting the 'Publish' button. And I've even deleted all my work and tried just to upload the 'welcome' page. Still doesn't work.
I'm getting a bit annoyed... Are there any solutions for my problem??

Probably not. No big deal, really. The important thing is we have been able to get your site on the .Mac server, albeit in the homepage directory.
Ok here's your last assignment. This will also take awhile, but when you are finished your site will be up on .Mac and accessible using the web.mac.com/username/iWeb/sitename url.
Since you have already initiated a publish to .Mac from iWeb, the root directory for iWeb should be on your iDisk. You should be able to navigate to the iWeb folder following this path:
    Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/SiteFolder
"SiteFolder" should be a folder named for the site you are having trouble publishing.
On your desktop, open the Site folder that iWeb delivered when you published the original site using the Publish to a Folder... command. You will see a number of folders in there and a number of page.html files. Drag each of these into the Site Folder mentioned earlier, on the iDisk. (The one named for the site). The root index.html file, (the one published outside of the Site folder) needs to be placed in the Web/Sites folder; you should see it in the column above the iWeb folder when done. Basically, you are "manually" uploading your site. It's cumbersome and a royal pita, but if successful, this exercise will confirm what I have suspected all along:
The problem is a latency/time-out error. (The actual error message itself is misleading and somewhat immaterial--iWeb probably chose it randomly). Lots of things contribute to it, but basically, iWeb gets tired of waiting on the WebDav protocol and then generates an error message. I wish I could be more specific, but that's about as close as I can get to the core issue. Many folks publish successfully from your area of the world; just keep trying, and when all else fails, you can always swap out the changed files manually following the method outlined above.

yes - I have just done it - I tried to publish again
and got the same error, but on a different file...
bummer - this is really fustrating
This problem has been floating for several days already. There was a previous forum 'iWeb Publishing Nightmare' which ran over 4,500 people participating in comments and sharing their problems. Many had proposed solutions ending with more frustration among MacUsers.
All I did was downgraded back to 1.0 and shall wait until a fix is at hand. Use your original installer and choose custom, then select iWeb only.
I use iWeb for my work particularly every hour ... uploading work to clients. So I can afford time wastage here. I don't use or need 'Comments' nor the extra 6 new templates. My entire site is running over 100 pages with several sites.

  • Publish error: An error occurred while publishing file...

    Hi,
Just installed iWeb08 on my computer. When I try to publish to .Mac I get this error:
"*Publish error: An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites". Try publishing again later*."
This is the link to the screenshot of that message:
    http://www.xHarbour.net/publisherror.png
I also tried it with a new (Free trial) .mac account, but get the same error. Also tried with a fresh new web site, but still error. Also tried to delete my Domain.sites2 files and start fresh, but still the publish error.
Also tried "Publish all to .mac", but same error.
When I go to my "System preferences" -> ".Mac" I need to enter my password to login, this works. So my password works ok on my .Mac account.
Publish to a Folder works without a problem.
Is this a known issue? *What can I do to fix this?*
    Thanks!

    Yep. File/Publish all to .Mac.
Don't mean to sound like a smart @ss, but that's really the solution here. It's the weekend and everybody is updating their sites. I've really come to believe that this is probably part of the problem.
If you like, you can review my Publish Errors Page for a review of Apple tech notes and other user's experiences with this type of problem.

  • An error occurred while publishing file "/Web/Sites". Try publishing again

Any ideas - I have been getting this since the move to ME. Systems logs on to Mac.com then immediately comes up with this error - An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites”. Try publishing again later.

I hope that you're now able to publish?
Unfortunately I'm not.. and I'm really getting fed up. I'm first to admit I'm technologically-challenged (which is why I prefer Apple to PCs because they're far more user friendly) but I've tried the things I've seen mentioned in other threads.. such as ensuring the .me update has been done, successfully published to a folder, etc.. When I publish (I only have the 'publish to mac', not 'publish to me' option) the creating log bar progressed to the half way mark before disappearing. Suddenly another box pops up to say that my site will begin publishing. It doesn't. Instead 'iweb unexpectedly quit'. It doesn't make a difference whether I've published to mac, published all to mac or simply clicked the publish button on the bottom left. While 'creating' the buttons turn blue but once it quits and I re-open/relaunch they're back to being red. As I am unable to get through to the online chat support (several unanswered messages and now it's completely unaccessible) I'm hoping someone else can suggest what I try next. It's been almost 2 weeks and I love iweb but am at the point of wanting to cancel my membership. Help!

  • An error occured while publishing file

I have not been able to publish using iWeb 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. I receive the message - "An error occured while publishng file "/web/sites/iWeb/etc..
I have been able to publish using iWeb 1.0 without any problem. But as soon as I upgrade - the publish feature of iWeb ceases to work. And so I cannot use some of the new iWeb features.
I have read the discussion boards for the last 24 hours without finding a solution. The most promising solution I saw was from "untergeek" who discovered that there are several HTTP request methods used by iWeb that are not supported by filtering/proxy software.
But I am unsure how I configure settings in OS X to address this. Does anybody have a solution to this?

Like you I was getting a bit frustrated... however I think I have worked it out now.
What seems to happen is that when you publish to .Mac it is sent directly to the .Mac server. Then your local iDisk synchronises with the .Mac server. In effect this means that the version published to the server is downloaded to your hard disc and stored in the iDisk folder.
The problem with publishing seems to happen while the iDisk is synchronising. All you get at that time is the publishing errors. However, if you wait until it has finished synchronising then the publishing to .Mac seems to go as smoothly as anything.
I'm not sure if this is what Apple intended. However, it all makes sense now.
The only real problem is if you want to make lots of changes quickly, since you cannot upload these until the process is finished.
To see if your iDisk is synching, double click the iDisk icon on your desktop an dlook at the bottom of the window that opens. If files are being transferred you can see the progress bar, and the number of files being copied.
Another way to find out it if it is actively synching is to look at the iDisk icon in the sidebar in any Finder window. If the little double-arrowed symbol is spinning then it is being synched. If it is still then it is finished. If you want to force it to do a synch now, just click that symbol once, sit back and wait for it to be done.
My only real "complaint" with the iDisk is that the synching process is somehwat slow (even though I'm on 2Mb broadband)
    Hope this helps

Are there any other suggestions? I'm running out of options and would love to publish the site I've been working on.
Have you tried publishing using another User account on your Mac?
Otherwise, try this, one step at a time:
    1. Clear out the domain file.
    2. Trash the iWeb preferences
    3. Repair Disk Permissions
    4. Delete iWeb
    5. Re-Install iWeb
    6. Upgrade to iWeb 1.0.1
    7. Restore your original site
    1. If you have created a site with any user, make a copy of the domain.site file (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) and move it to another location, the desktop is fine.
    a) The above folder is now empty........
    2. Now we are going to delete the iWeb preference file.
    a) To trash the prefs, go to User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist and drag this file to the trash can
    b) Empty the Trash, click on the Trash Can so that you get a finder window, go to Finder > Empty Trash
    c) Restart your machine, it is important to do this so that the files that you have deleted from the trash dont get recovered in anyway by OS X.
    d) Launch iWeb and add a one page sitem, and see if you can publish it.
    3. Still not working? Now try Repairing Permissions
    a) Go to, Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    b) In Disk Utility, select your Hard Disk, you should now see a screen with the First Aid Tab selected.
    c) There are two buttons, Verify Disk Permissions & Repair Disk Permissions, click on Repair Disk Permissions, now you are doing some OS X maintenance!
    d) Let this complete, if it fails for any reason, run it again a couple of times, no more than three.
    4. Try iWeb again, add a site and try to publish.
Still cant publish? Only read on if you are brave, we are going to delete iWeb.
    a) Close all apps, then open finder, go to the Applications folder, click on the iWeb app and drag it to the trash can
    b) Trash the prefs, go to User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist and drag this file to the trash can
    c) Delete the receipts, this is not normally done but this ensures a full reinstall, go to HardDisk/Library/Receipts/ in this folder there should a number of files that are named iWeb_xxxx.pkg, move all of these to the trash can.
    d) Empty the Trash, click on the Trash Can so that you get a finder window, go to Finder > Empty Trash
    e) Restart your machine, it is important to do this so that the files that you have deleted from the trash dont get recovered in anyway by OS X.
    5. Re-Install iWeb
    a) Find your iLife 06 dvd!
    b) Start to reinstall iLife, on about the fourth or fifth item of the install you get an option to select the Install Type, click on the Custom button that appears.
    c) Deselect everything but iWeb, the top option cannot be changed.
    d) Now let iWeb run through and complete the installation.
    6. iWeb has finished installing.
    a) Launch iWeb, hopefully it is going to work
    b) When iWeb launches, you should be prompted to upgrade to iWeb 1.0.1, do so.
    c) If you aren't prompted then go to here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/iweb101.html and download it.
    d) You need to quit iWeb before running the 1.0.1 upgrade.
    e) The upgrade is installed and you can launch iWeb, I hope.
    7. Restore the site you created.
    a) Launch iWeb, add a page, then quit iWeb, choose to Save on exiting.
    b) This has created the new domain.sites file and tells iWeb where to look for it, you have no control of this.
    c) Swap the new domain file for your old one.
    d) Launch iWeb again and your old site should be in front of you.

  • An error occurred while publishing

I get this error again and again...
"An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/Blog/Blog/Entries”. Try publishing again later"
And I have no clue what is going on..

I had this same problem, due to the recent update of iWeb. The publish dialog said to "publish all" which I did. But it kept giving me this error, sometimes the same file and sometimes different.
    This support document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303353
says to keep trying. Which I did. All day and part of the night, too. Finally, after about twenty attempts, at about 10:30 p.m., it worked! Maybe it really is a network problem caused (in my case) by everyone having to republish their whole site due to the recent iWeb update?

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
