MobileMe Question

I use the apple mail client to retrieve and manage my POP email accounts. [email protected]
I have never used .mac or want to use the .me as a primary email.
I set everything up and I was expecting the mobileme site to import all my emails and folders from my apple mail client. So far this has not happened. I do a manual sync and contacts seem to work but nothing for email.
I am starting to think I am wrong about how the service works or that it will not work with POP accounts?
Any Ideas.

There might be other ways of doing that but I don't have an iphone, and refuse to use email on a phone!. Check the third party applications for a solution.
Also the Gmail solution is good. Just create a Gmail account, and configure it to collect your POP email. You can then use IMAP to play with Gmail on your Mac (via Mail) - and use the Gmail web interface to play with Gmail on your iPhone (I am not sure if the iPhone mail client can handle Gmail - someone else can confirm that).

Mobile me chat?

I visited a genius bar today. So much for that, the guy had no idea how to get my comments to publish. He said my next step would be to chat with the mobile me people. He navigated to a spot on this site that said so much, something like "chat with mobile me" or something like that. Well, I get home and I can't find this spot anywhere. I searched my history, I've searched the apple site, I've searched and searched and can't find the stupid spot he showed me. Any ideas? If I try calling the store I'm not gonna be able to get through to a person, and if I call apple support they will charge me. I need to resolve this and get my comments off of iweb. HELP

It is called iChat, but does this have anything to do with iWeb at all? Remember that this is an iWeb forum. There is a special help section specifically for MobileMe questions. Perhaps you could try posting there? Just go to Apple and click on Support and look at the drop down menu and the right side where you would select iWeb and select MobileMe instead.

Does anyone know how to actually report a problem to apple?

I can't find anywhere on the support site how to report a MobileMe problem to them. They lost all of my calendars and I have no course to be made whole again. They say there is email support, but that 1 Infinite Loop thing is more than just a street address. I'm very frustrated that I can't find a way to get support for a product I pay for on a subscription basis as well as having several devices that work with it that are now handicapped by its failure. I tried calling the number and they hung up on me. I went to the store and they sent me to the website...

The problem is that the live-chat feature doesn't appear on page load. First you need to choose a category from the column on the left, then a topic, then the chat option comes up, although it is unavailable from 7 PM to 8 AM CST.

No iCloud telephone support

I love Apple but the transition to iCloud from Mobileme is confusing bordering on terrible.When I called Apple for support I was told that all MobileMe questions neededto be submitted online and that apple phone support was not ‘involved’ with iCloud. It sounded like a separate company and I knowthat’s not true but the poorly trained person on the phone made it sound that way. When I tried logging into this discussion to post it would not accept my 'main' apple ID that I use all the time to purchase.
Here is mysituation. A family of 4. We have 3iphones (4S, 4, 3), iTouch, iPad, MBPro, iMac, AppleTv, MobileMe (5 emailaddresses) two apple ID’s(one used to purchase music from iTunes). I purchasedthe Family Pack years ago for MobileMe. One of the email accounts is the ‘main’account that controls the others.
How do I best setup the iphones, ipads computers for iCloud.
Also, can we all download music, apps etc., using the same Apple ID?

On a device that already has it set up, go to Settings>iCloud>Account>Keychain (at the bottom), tap the number shown then change it to the number you wish to use.

MobileMe Gallery Widgets - 3 Curious Questions

Have created and published an iWeb site which basically consists of one page, onto which I’ve positioned six MobileMe Gallery widgets. In the window for each of those widgets I’ve selected a particular MobileMe Gallery published from Aperture, each of which already has one particular image designated as its Key Photo.
So now what’s left -- and what I’ve searched extensively but still can’t figure out -- is:
1) How do I turn OFF the automatic “slideshow preview” going on inside each of those six Gallery Widgets, and make it so they each display only the Key Photo for that Gallery (at least until the user mouses over a particular widget, activating the scrub/scan feature to manually preview all the images contained in that Gallery)?
2) How do I set each widget window to “fit” all the preview thumbs inside its dimensions, rather than arbitrarily hacking off the tops and bottoms of all the vertically-oriented images, which for many shots just looks arbitrary, amateurish, and really ugly?
3) What is the current status of that ridiculous bug which didn’t allow the Gallery Widget to display a Gallery which had been published using the “Hide album on my Gallery home page” option? I do ultimately need to have that option checked, but have left it unchecked for now just to make sure the iWeb site containing the widgets would actually publish.
So -- have the iWeb people and the MobileMe people FINALLY got this bug fixed, or do I still need to hold off activating that “Hide album...” option, and just let my professional Galleries be all mixed together with my personal ones? (Which again just looks arbitrary and amateurish, and encourages one to check out third-party solutions -- at least until such time as the different programming groups at Apple decide to actually talk to each other, and make programs which can interact in truly fluid, intuitive, and meaningful ways.)
My 2¢ -- on top of 3 questions. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

No, no, no -- I'm fine with the skimming, in fact I like that feature. Which again makes me wonder -- is this normal?
#2 - Again, you're referring to the skimming, right? Since it's a square shape the photos would have to be square to be able to be scaled exactly. Since it's only a "skim" of what's inside being perfectly scaled isn't that necessary.
It certainly wouldn't be as annoying if I could switch off this "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour as described above. (Though even for the skim function, I still think it would make sense to have the option to have the images auto scale to fit completely within the widget window -- which is not square, by the way -- or at least on my system appears to only be sizeable as a horizontal rectangle, to a maximum size of 320x260 pixels. This orientation works fine for previewing horizontally-oriented images, but looks butt-ugly when completely decapitating various groups of people in vertically-aligned shots, of which I happen to have many.)
In any case, if an auto-scale option to fit all image preview thumbs within the widget window (even for mere skimming) is something I need to add to my Feature Request list, that's fine. It's this bizarre, completely on its own "automatic slideshow preview" behaviour I'm still trying to understand.
#3 - it still exists. If you don't want it to be displayed in your overall MMe gallery with the rest of the individual galleries Apple isn't letting it be published alone.
Just to make sure we're talking about the same bug, in an ideal world I DON'T want these particular Gallery/Albums to be displayed as part of my overall MMe Gallery page, but I DO want them to be the designated content of the MMe Gallery WIDGETS which I'm including on the specific iWeb page in question. And if this bug still has not been fixed, then it appears I and many others are still S.O.L. for what should be a simple and obvious bit of formatting.

that Apple desperately needs an Inter-App Czar, someone with the carte-blanche power to literally FORCE different programming teams to make all Apple apps not only play nicely together, but to play intelligently and intuitively and creatively together!

how much longer will Apple host my mobileme website? Any suggestions for transitioning to a new server? Will iWeb continue to work as my web update program?

Why did you not consider doing a search of this forum first before posting a question like this? Your totally unique question is asked and answered on a daily basis on this forum.
If you had searched you would have found that MobileMe will be available until the end of June this year and if you are a registered MobileMe user, then you should have received e-mails regarding this and extending your subscription for free until the end of June.
iWeb is an application and you can continue to use it to update and publish your website - it works in Snow Leopard, Lion and will work with Mountain Lion.
Have a look at GoDaddy and HostExcellence for starters and do a search of this forum.

IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though. (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

Faces / Places and Mobileme Gallery question

Hi all, i could not find much on this but my question is when using faces / places and Mobileme gallery does this actually take up hard drive space ? With faces and places does that actaully create another image or is it just linked to your main library ? And for Mobileme Gallary does that actually download the images to your Mac ?

Problems and questions re merging of MobileMe and iCloud

Please bear with me - this is all rather complicated!
At sometime in my early years with Mac, I signed up for an Apple ID - can't even remember what it was. Many, many years ago at the beginning of the internet, I signed up for another Apple ID - it was <[email protected]>. Later, I bought/signed up for .Mac which later became MobileMe. When I first signed up, I had an Apple ID of <[email protected]>. At some time, I quit using the insightbb email and switched to Mail - my email address became <[email protected]>. Then MobileMe came along and wanted my address to be <[email protected]> but it did allow me to keep the mac.com address. I also had two aliases through MobileMe. I still occasionally need to use the insightbb.com account so while I never sign up for anything using that address, there are a few VERY old accounts I have that use it as it was the address with which I originally signed up. I don't remember which ones in order to change it, so I just keep it active and only rarely get email addressed to the insightbb acc't.
Today, I upgraded to Lion and then to iCloud. I used the "migrate from MobileMe to iCloud" format, and low and behold, it told me that my Apple ID is now <[email protected]>. This is going to cause me BIG problems as there is no way to merge Apple ID's!
My first question is how do I get back my correct AppleID for iCloud?
My second is I now have multiple accounts on my iPhone and iPad. I have an insightbb.com account - must keep it. But I also have my new iCloud account and I still have my MobileMe account. Should I delete these accounts? What has happened to my MobileMe aliases? I have subscriptions using them, too!
Aggghhh!!! I LOVED MobileME! So far, I HATE iCloud! I don't need these complications! Any advice on how to reconcile these problems?

I just got off the phone after an hour with Apple Support. The bottom line is that somehow iCloud has decided to use my .mac address as my Apple ID. Yes, I can change it, but if I do, I lose everything - contacts, mail, bookmarks, calendar - everything. For iTunes and this Community help forum, I will have to continue to use the insightbb Apple ID. They could not figure out how this happened, as for MobileMe, I ALWAYS used the insightbb Apple ID. Gremlins in moving from MobileMe to iCloud.
He did say that Apple is working very hard to figure out how to merge multiple Apple ID's as this is becoming more and more of a problem. So, until they sort it all out, at least I know what to do.

Mobileme/Push Email question

I was just wondering how push email typically works. I have many emails that I save in various folders on my computer, I wouldn't mind so much if it also pushed those emails to mobileme. However, if I get that email sent to my iphone I would want to archive it in a folder on my mac, but then delete it on my iphone. My limited understanding of mobileme/push email is that if I do something to a message on one device it automatically does it on the other devices. So if I delete a message in iphone it automatically deletes it on my computer and mobileme. Is there a way to bypass this for certain emails? I don't want any of my 8gb space to be used for much email because I will be using that space for music, some tv shows, and the many apps I want from the app store.

I never subscribed to .Mac so I don't know if the server folders appear on the mail application in mac like the idisk appears as another disk drive. just want to know how user friendly its going to be to switch emails between folders.

If you haven't yet signed out in System Preferences>MobileMe go there: go to the iDisk pane and if you have iDisk Syncing running, stop it. Go to the Sync pane and turn off all syncing. Then go to the Account pane and sign out.
Also go to iPhoto and/or Aperture if applicable and if they have an accounts section in Preferences remove MobileMe from it (not all versions do).
If you have already signed out you won't be able to sign back in to do this. In that event, or if the above doesn't work, go to (user)/Library/Preferences/ByHost and remove all .plist files beginning with com.apple.DotMac and com.apple.idisk.

MobileMe to iCloud question

Do I want to delete my old MobileMe account after updating to iCloud? ical, contacts, etc keeps trying to log me into my MobileMe account in preferences and that of course does nothing. I am running lion.

When you setup your iCloud account you will be asked if you want to transfer everything over from your MobileMe account.

MobileMe sync question

I've had my iPhone set up to sync contacts and calendar information via the dock sync. (In the "Info" tab, "Sync Address Book contacts" and "Sync iCal calendars" has been checked).
However, I'd like to start using MobileMe to sync everything so I can take advantage of push. When I go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > MobileMe account and turn on "Contact" and "Calendars", I get a message saying "There are existing contacts synced with your Mac. Would you like to merge them with your MobileMe account?"
I'm not sure what to do at this point. The problem is that I already have contacts and calendars synced from my Mac. I don't want to merge, do I? But if I leave them unmerged, will the changes I make on other devices be reflected on the iPhone?
I'm confused.

Ah, so which one of you is right?
Here's another question: when setting up a new iPhone, should I choose "automatically sync contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes, and email accounts" or leave it unchecked? If I check it, doesn't that mean it will sync all of those things via USB instead of via MobileMe? If I want to use MobileMe/push instead, shouldn't I leave that option unchecked and then add my MobileMe account in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings and then turn on Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find My Phone?
