Mobility Radeon HD 4850 no screen found with fglrx

hi there!
I've recently been trying to install arch on my iMac 11,1.
The first problem I encountered: black screen as soon as I booted the live CD. After a quick search, i leaned that this could be fixed easily by adding "nomodeset" as a kernel parameter. But that leads to another problem, this time with the radeon driver. According to the KMS section of the radeon driver, using KMS is mandatory to the radeon driver, wich leaves only the catalyst ones for my setup.
Since I don't really mind about the drivers I use (as long as it actually works), I went and installed catalysts following the instructions here.
Problem is: X crashes on boot. A black screen is displayed and nothing happens.
fglrxinfo returns
Error: unable to open display (null)
my xorg.conf (generated with "aticonfig --initial")

O and just saw this little section from the first link...down by configuration
Option "MacModel" "string"
    Used to specify Mac models for connector tables and quirks. If you have a powerbook or mini with DVI that does not work properly, try the alternate options as Apple does not seem to provide a good way of knowing whether they use internal or external TMDS for DVI. Only valid on PowerPC. On Linux, the driver will attempt to detect the MacModel automatically.
    ibook -- ibooks
    powerbook-external -- Powerbooks with external DVI
    powerbook-internal -- Powerbooks with integrated DVI
    powerbook-vga -- Powerbooks with VGA rather than DVI
    mini-external -- Mac Mini with external DVI
    mini-internal -- Mac Mini with integrated DVI
    imac-g5-isight -- iMac G5 iSight
    emac -- eMac G4
    The default value is undefined.

  • [ABANDONED]No screens found with radeon driver

    I had a working system that used the radeon driver, and then the drivers and x server updated. When I first booted my old xorg.conf sort of worked, but the keyboard and mouse were not detected properly and did not work at all, so I removed my xorg.conf because it was "no longer necessary with the open source drivers". Now I get the error "no screens found" whenever I try to start the x server with startx, Same result with an autogened xorg,conf
    The computer has two Radeon HD 7770s
    Normally it is booted up with an arch install running the fglrx driver, and the system running the open source radeon driver is a fallback system used for maintenance purposes and test the radeon driver.
    here is my xorg.log

    Xorg-server 1.16 now allows to start X rootless when some conditions are met.
    https://www.archlinux.org/news/xorg-ser … available/ gives more details.
    Look at /usr/bin/Xorg , it's now  a shell script that checks if Xorg.wrap exists, and starts it if it does.
    Xorg.wrap then tries to determine whether rootless X is possible (using startx & KMS-capable videodriver satisfy that requirement) , if so it uses logind to start X rootless.
    (starting this way can break error redirection and adding options to startx).
    There are 2 ways to change the behaviour i know off :
    1.
    Create /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config file and use that to configure Xorg.wrap .
    Details about that file are on the Xorg.wrap manpage .
    For some users that's enough to get X working again, for others it's not .
    2.
    Modify /usr/bin/Xorg so it always starts Xorg.bin .
    Any update to xorg-server will offcourse undo this change.
    I suggest you start with 1.

    Hi there @BUMZ
    I am sorry to hear of your video woes. At least it will run with the one chip disabled. Unfortunately that itself suggests only two likely causes. The driver for the ATI Radeon needs to be updated or the chip itself is defective. To me it sounds as if it is a heat related problem on that chip, which would explain why it may run briefly when you leave it alone for a bit.
    I would recommend calling in to phone support, to verify the problem. It may require a board replacement if it is the chip itself that has become defective.

    Using intel instead --> gives me a black screen
    Somebody an idea, what I can do?

    Ok, I removed the packages
    xf86-video-intel xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-fbdev
    So its the xf86-video-ati, which is used.

  • Xorg 1.8.1.902 & Catalyst 10.6-5 & Mobility Radeon HD 2600

    Hello all,
    I'm reporting in with an error that I can't seem to shake since the Xorg 1.8 and Catalyst 10.6 release. I have been unable to get the two to place nice with the Mobility Radeon HD 2600 in my HP Compaq 8510p notebook. I've followed the instructions on the Arch ATI Catalyst wiki using the repository approach. Everything installs correctly and I've configured the xorg.conf as instructed in the wiki. I actually just delete the existing xorg.conf and run aticonfig --initial, but still no dice. I've made sure that I have the fglrx module loaded in my rc.conf.
    When GDM tries to start, it freaks out with the screen flashing a few times and then crashes saying too many attempts to start X. I login and try to start X manually and it produces the following log file:
    [ 24.874]

    Oops, my bad.
    As for my issue(s), I'm not going to bother with the proprietary driver until AMD gets their act together.

  • No hardware video decoding on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470

    Hi all,
    does anybody know why accelerated video decoding isn't avaiable on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3xxx Series? From what I read in the corresponding KB article it works on the desktop counterparts that are based on the same hardware.
    In my case I'm using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 on a T400 with switchable graphics (same as reported in this thread). When watching a video on Youtube (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI3f4b-b8ig) and displaying video information it says "accelerated video rendering, software video decoding". So hardware video rendering works, but hardware video decoding doesn't! It's acceptable on my machine since it's equipped with a decent fast Intel P8400 CPU, but since my graphics card supports hardware decoding for h264 video it's just a waste of ressources.
    Does anybody know if Adobe plans support forhardware decoding with these graphics cards? Or is there even a way to use hardware decoding although not fully supported?
    Thanks
    Eduard

    If you read in graphics hardware support in some previous releases of Flash Player, flash video decoding support a.k.a. h.264 hardware video decoding is supported fully by ATi(or AMD) Radeon HD 4xxx and higher. The Radeon HD 3xxx and lower can't support h.264 video decoding for flash video decoding fully enough.

  • Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series + open source driver = screen flickers

    Hello, this is my first post here. I just finished setting up my first arch installation on my laptop and I'm using Xorg + gnome 3 as user interface.
    My laptop has two VGA cards, an integrated intel VGA card and a Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series, so I used vgaswitcheroo to switch to the Mobility Radeon and turned off the intel VGA card.
    Now, here's the problem: I want 3d acceleration to play games and such, but the opensource radeon driver is being weird.
    Basically, if I use my Mobility Radeon and the opensource driver the lower-center part of the screen flickers when i move windows vertically. It flickers to black in a polygon-like area and the window shadows get all messed up. If i try to start a game that uses 3d acceleration (such as nexuiz) it runs extremely slow (way too slow for this VGA card) and flickers like crazy in the same area and sometimes on the entire screen.
    I already tried using the proprietary driver (catalyst) but it doesn't seem to support switchable VGA cards, since it gives me memory segmentation error.
    However, if I switch back to the Intel VGA card and use the opensource intel driver, it runs just fine with no flickering and nexuiz runs better (but of course not fast enough since the intel VGA card is crappy)
    As you can see here, 3D acceleration seems to be enabled and Xorg doesn't seem to give any major error or warning:

    Hi there @ZezoOo
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
    I understand that you are looking for help with your video drivers for the adapters in your notebook. Unfortunately, after doing some searching, it appears that Windows 8.1 is not a supported operating system for this notebook. HP customized drivers are only available for the Windows 7 operating system.
    Please see the following, for some guidance.  HP Products - What If I Don't See My Operating System?

  • Cannot Connect to External Display with Mobility Radeon on Windows 10

    Just upgraded to Windows 10 Professional 64-bit. Upon upgrading, I have completely lost the ability to connect my 5 year old Pavilion dm4 to an external display via HDMI.  Further investigation leads me to conclude that *only* the integrated Intel graphics chipset is functioning.  The Mobility Radeon 5000 series is completely non-functional, which is why the HDMI functionality is also gone. I've tried 3 solutions: 1) Re-installing the latest Mobility Radeon drivers provided by HP on my laptop's respective webpage.  These graphics drivers are for Windows 7, but at least they were specifically made for HP-style switchable graphics.  This solution failed: I get an error stating that the device is not working or the drivers need updating. 2) I installed the latest drivers for my Radeon directly from AMD's site using their autodetect hardware feature.  These drivers are compatible with Windows 10, but not for a switchable graphics configuration that seems to be required by my HP laptop. This solution also failed: when I try to switch to an external display, I get an external error message that says no external display can be found (no surprise, because the Radeon is not working). 3) I repeated both steps (1) and (2), only this time installing the drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode.  Alas, in either case I could not get the drivers to install.  The installation in compatibility mode would permentantly hang a fraction of the way through the process and never finish. Does anyone know of other solutions?? I found potential solutions using a BIOS update for dv6 and dv7 systems, but I have neither of those. My system is dm4. System information: OS: Windows 10 Professional 64-bit (upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit wi/ SP1).Product Name: HP Pavilion dm4t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PCProduct Number: WD470AV

    Ok, thought I'd chip in here as I've just got back from an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar to address the same problem with my April 2011 MacBook Pro. It's Mini Display Port has never worked when connecting to an HDMI tv set though I use it constantly with a Display Port compatitble third party external monitor. I've run OS X 6.8, 7 and 8.2 and it's had no effect, any set I connect to will not see my MBP.
    They wheeled out an HDMI tv (it was a generic set and not a brand I'd heard of) to connect to, logged into my MPC with Apple's remote diagnostic tool and found no hardware or software issues.  They changed around the leads 3 times and none of them worked. One of the Genius then plugged what looked like a 13 inch 2012 Macbook into the the tv and on the second lead (one of 2 identical iWires taken from the shop display) it worked.
    The Genius' take on it was that they'd never had anyone come into the store with this problem and that it's the first he'd heard of it. He also said that there is no mention of HDMI compatiblity in any of Apple's tech docs or manuals for my machine and that Apple have never claimed HDMI compatibilty with Display Port.
    One hypothetical solution would be to completely replace the logic board but that wouldnt work as all we'd be doing is replacing a logic board that according to the Apple diagnostic tools is working perfectly for an identical one. Apparently Apple made no changes to the logic board for that computer.

  • ATI Mobility Radeon X600 driver update installs but screen goes black

    My HP Pavilion zd8000 came with the ATI Mobility Radeon X600 graphics card.
    When I installed Windows 7, it auto-updates the driver (recognizing it by name), then upon restart, the screen goes black.
    Had to restart in safe mode and uninstall.
    Anyone else with this problem? Anyone find a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    According to your problem description, please perform the following steps to narrow down the issue.
    Run Windows Low-resolution
    1) Detach all unnecessary peripheral devices from your computer, such as printers, scanners and removable storage devices.
    2) Restart the computer.
    3) Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
    4) Choose Enable Low-resolution video (640*480) option, and press Enter.
    5) Then install the display card driver in Windows Low-resolution mode.
    (You should contact ATI support to obtain the right device driver compatible with Windows 7)
    Note: In Low-resolution Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.
    Good Luck!

  • AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 display driver stopped responding

    I have received the following message on my HP Pavilion dv7:
    Display driver AMD driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered. It is an AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250.
    The screen randomly does this starting a day or so ago. Maybe once every few hours or it may do it once every 5 min three times in a row. The screen has random little blue dots here and there.
    What do I need to do? Is this something I could potentially fix/replace/etc?

    Is this they way you did a factory reset tomu96?  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7)
    If so, that should have resolved the issue, but since it continues to crash if you made no changes after that restore, you probably have hardware failure.

  • [Solved] xorg "no screens found" on laptop with nvidia + intel Optimus

    Startx gives fatal server error:(EE) no screens found
    After installing arch on my laptop, I followed the xorg arch wiki to install the Xwindow system.
    I installed  xorg-server, startx
    lspci -k | grep -A -2 -i "VGA" shows two graphic cards (see below). I guess the I am using the NVIDIA.
    I installed nvidia-utils-337.12-1 , nvidia-337.12-1, nvidia-libgl-337.12-1
    After that I ran nvidia-xconfig
    startx gives the above error.
    What can I try next?

    Hi Karol,
    Thank you for the suggestion. I read the wiki Nvidia#No_screens_found_on_a_laptop.2FNVIDIA_Optimus .
    It says "On a laptop, if the NVIDIA driver cannot find any screens, you may have an NVIDIA Optimus setup : an Intel chipset connected to the screen and the video outputs, and a NVIDIA". This seems to be the case for my latop.
    The wiki suggests three options to get around the problem:
    1) NVIDIA drivers now offer Optimus support since 319.12 Beta [[3]] with kernels above and including 3.9.
    2) Another solution is to install the Intel driver to handle the screens
    3) Enter the BIOS and changed the default graphics setting from 'Optimus' to 'Discrete' and the install NVIDIA drivers
    I tried them all:
    1) I had NVIDIA driver version 337 installed, but I don't know how to turn on Optimus support
    3) I check my bios settings, but there is no such option
    2) I removed the nvidia drivers and then installed intel drivers. I removed /etc/x11/xorg.conf
    startx now find screens. I guess there is no 2d or 3d acceleration, but it works
    Thank you
    Sjoerd

  • Xorg does not start (timeouts) with "no screens found"

    After years of my system working correctly, this has been happening for the last ten days.
    Many times - not all of them - xorg does not start, and I get greated with the standard console login prompt.
    Checking in /var/log/ the xorg.0.log, it says that "no screens found".
    I am using an nvidia VGA with nvidia driver 190.xx from extra.
    I am using KDE, from inittab (not with kdm as a deamon).
    Initial xorg.conf used to be:
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
    EndSection
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Default Layout"
    Screen "Default Screen"
    InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
    InputDevice "Configured Mouse"
    EndSection
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    EndSection
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "My Monitor"
    Option "DPMS" "True"
    Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Graphics Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "My Graphics Card"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x1024"
    Viewport 0 0
    EndSubSection
    Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "enable"
    EndSection
    Now I have trimmed it down to:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Graphics Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    But the problem remains.
    The problem started ten days ago.
    The previous night I had updated the following packages (I provide a section of pacman.log):
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded acct (6.3.2-2 -> 6.5.1-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded coreutils (8.2-1 -> 8.4-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded farsight2 (0.0.16-1 -> 0.0.17-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded git (1.6.6-1 -> 1.6.6.1-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded iproute2 (2.6.29-3 -> 2.6.31-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded mkvtoolnix (3.0.0-1 -> 3.1.0-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded psmisc (22.8-1 -> 22.10-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded zlib (1.2.3.4-3 -> 1.2.3.4-4)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded recordmydesktop (0.3.8.1-1 -> 0.3.8.1-2)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded smbclient (3.4.4-1 -> 3.4.5-1.1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded samba (3.4.4-1 -> 3.4.5-1.1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded smartmontools (5.38-2 -> 5.39-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded tzdata (2009t-1 -> 2010a-1)
    [2010-01-21 20:35] upgraded whois (4.7.36-1 -> 5.0.0-1)
    So since nothing on xorg was updated, maybe the new coreutils is the more likely suspect?

    no, i install nvidia and then xorg i try startx without result.
    Right now i am from Ubuntu, i am going to install arch on virtualbox and i will answer to any other questions.
    Thank you
    The reason you were asked if you rebooted is because installing the nvidia driver also installs a kernel module. That kernel module
    needs to be installed in the running kernel, either by invoking "depmod nvidia" or rebooting, providing everything installed correctly. You
    may need to put the module name in your modules section of rc.conf and then reboot.
    The absence of that kernel module explains your error message of not finding that kernel module. :-)
    iirc the .install already does the depmod
    Note to TS:  if you use virtualbox you can't use your hosts video card so you will have to use the vboxvideo driver. So read the wiki about virtualbox
