MobilNova - Media Center for TomTom

Media Center for TomTom extends all-in-one TomTom navigation systems into a portable Video and MP3 Player

dbiz,
I have no problem with making Media Center an add-on for personal versions of Windows IF MS wants to sell it at a lower price. My problem is as a Volume Licensing customer, we are paying the same yearly fee (yearly recurring income for Microsoft) as we have
in the past and are getting features taken away from us that we had in Windows 7. Both DVD/MPEG2 playback in Media Player and Media Center were included in our VL versions of both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Enterprise. We are not seeing our licensing costs
go down but paying the same amount and getting less.
By all means, feel free to make Media Center and DVD/MPEG2 playback an add-on for personal versions of Windows (if you are dropping the price), but include it for your VL customers who are paying for SA and who's prices are not going down.
Businesses (or schools in my case) do not want to add 3rd party solutions to our images and don't like losing functionality we have had in the past. Even Media Center had it's place in the classroom. You could do network TV Tuners or just have a nice interface
to play back media on a connected TV or projector for the classroom.

• Is there or can Microsoft develop a app for smart TVs so you can stream from Windows Media Center

I have used Windows Media Center for years to record TV programs and have even sertup my kids Xbox 360 as an extender.  I've recently purchased a smart TV which allows me to steam music and home videoes from Windows media player but ofcourse the .wtv
files will not play.  Would it be possible to develop an app for Smart TVs and other devices so they can be used as extenders.  I'm sure many people would be willing to pay for the app.  I've tried some 3rd party extenders and not been
happy with there performance and I'd like to not need another box and remote.  I'm sure these new TVs have the ability to do it will microsoft allow them too?

Hi,
I agree with S.Sengupta.
You may contact the support of the smart TVs and request a tool to match Windows media player.
Hope it helps.

• Puchase of Win 8.1 pro Media Center 64 bit and received 32 bit How do i correct this mistake ? Microsoft made it?

My system is Win 8.1 PRO  64 bit. I tried to run a a dvd movie and was told to purchase Win media Center for $ 9.95 and I did Microsoft sent me Win Media center with 32 bit ? Is this compatable with the 64 bit operating system ? Jim Young

As I know, most 32 bit programs can work fine on a 64 bit system.
Regarding to
“Microsoft sent me Win Media center with 32 bit” what did you mean by this sentence, a key?

• IMac as Media Center

Good evening,
I've got a late model MacBook Pro and an 800mhz PowerBook at present. The PowerBook hosts my iTunes library, ipods (got a few), and SlimServer for my SqueezeBox (slimdevices.com). I'm rather peeved that Leopard will not support the PowerBook as Time Machine and screen sharing seemed like a brilliant way to keep that little bugger alive. Doubly annoyed as I replaced the hard drive and had to buy Tiger (lost originals) to bring it back on line a few months ago.
Anyway, I just ordered a 42" LCD TV and was thinking a Mac Mini would be a great replacement for the PowerBook as a media center for my downloaded videos, etc. But, by the time I buy a Mini, drop a bigger hard drive in, buy a wireless keyboard and mouse, I've spent as much as I would on a 17" refurb imac.
What is the village consensus on using the imac as a media center? What challenges are expected (versus a Mini)?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hello,
I would just use the program to enable Windows to read the OS X partition. Get a good Anti-Virus and FireWall installed for Windows. And, keep it updated (as well as keeping Windows updated).
The potential problem you mention would be true of any external drive if the Windows installation was able to read / write it. So, it really makes no difference there.
The only file system that both OS X and Windows can read and write to is FAT32. And OS X's PKG files (downloaded programs, installed programs, and system updates) cannot be written to a FAT32 volume. So, you would still prefer to have that external drive formatted as a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) volume.
So, I'd just go with a program like MacDrive:
http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/
It has a trial version (limited by number of days it will work) that you can use to see if you like it. I've used it before, and it worked great.
I hope this helps.

• Media center setup

Hi,
I am a long time linux user as a server platform but just recently started building a media center for me and I am not quite sure where to start to do what I want.
I have an archlinux install with HDMI output and sound (using ALSA), I currently configured kodi to run on boot with an automatic login to lightdm and this works fine but what I want to achieve is to have the choice to run something else besides Kodi, here is how I see this:
- system boots and display a choice of applications to run
- I choose the application
- it runs an associated script to setup the X session and run the application needed
I already know how to write/use different xsessions from the commandline ( lightdm -d -c <config> )  but the piece I am mising is how I can give a choice to select from, can I do it with lightdm ? I am not particulary attached to it if something else can do it.
Any hint/pointer will be greatly appreciated, once I have an idea of where to go and what to use I am confident I can find how to configure the different parts.

I find a setup that mostly works for me: I used lxdm as display manager, created one user for each application I want to run, removed the "!" in place of the password in /etc/shadow to allow passwordless login and added a .dmrc in each of the user's home folder to launch the window manager as well as the application itself which looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
i3 &
stepmania
Now I just need to make the selection screen look a little more sexy, maybe another display manager can do help with that but some of them look awfully complex to configure for what they do.
Ideally what I want to achieve is multiple large "blocks" side by side horizontally with a picture/icon inside instead of the current user selection.
If anyone can suggest a good option for the display manager it would be nice, there are a fair number of them and I found very little information on how they actually look or how they could look.

• Decoder error on media center

Your Microsoft Windows Xp SP3 version value in the registry may be inconsistent or missing ...
     - Please navigate to the following tree in the registry editor and paste the value for "CSDVersion"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
The regkey can be accessed by searching for 'CSDVersion' in the registry editor or you could follow the steps below.
(1) Click 'Start' > choose 'Run'
(2) type 'regedit' in the run window and click 'ok'. This will open the registry editor
(3) Navigate the tree to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion'
(4) look in the left side pane and locate 'CSDVersion' and its value.
And how did your upgrade to SP3 happen? Did it come preinstalled on your machine or have you upgraded it by downloading upgrades from the internet.

• Mac as Media Center, Best Media Format

I'm new to Mac as I'm a Microsoft convert and just bought a Mac Mini for two purposes: 1.) I'm going to start developing iPhone applications because I am a software developer. 2.) To use as a media center for my home theatre. My Mac has the following specs:
250 GB HD;
3GB Ram;
2GHz Dual Core processor;
I also have a 750 GB Western Digital HD loaded with MP3's and VOB movies that I ripped directly from disc's using AnyDVD and CloneDVD software.
I have a Samsung ln52a750 (52" 1080p) television that I will be using as my primary monitor that I have hooked using a DVI-D to HDMI cable that supports full 1080p data transmission.
My question: I would like to know the best video format to use to get the best quality video without data loss and degradation (file size/disk space isn't an issue.) My main concern is that the quality is as it was intended to be. Can anyone offer suggestions on which format I should convert all of my VOB files to so they are single files and do not lose quality? In advance, much appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

That sounds like a great idea, I will most certainly give that a shot. Sounds like exactly what I am looking for. What about for recorded content. I am also thinking about getting the eyeTV so that i can record digital content from my HD cable subscription. Generally we have a lot of HD movies streamed directly from there that I wouldn't mind capturing. Would I be able to convert that media to an .iso or would I even need to? I believe that would record as an Mpeg-4. Any ideas or suggestions?
Plex is a Mac version of XBMC (which is also available for Mac). Plex will play ISOs, VIDEO_TS folders, VOB files, MPEGs, AVIs, in other words pretty much anything.
For DVDs I personally use VIDEO_TS folders, and for TV shows (from DVDs) I extract them to individual VOBs which retain the original video quality, and all the audio and subtitles tracks (which Plex can still access even when not part of a DVD).
Plex should also be able to play TV recordings, even HD ones, however currently EyeTV recordings are not perfectly handled by Plex (or XBMC) due to the fact they are stored as folders (or Packages in Mac speak). There is a way to handle them in the video mode as opposed to library mode of Plex/XBMC (once you have tried it you will understand the difference). You can also export them from EyeTV to a more traditional format. You can also 'run' EyeTV from within Plex.
Sadly Front Row which is built-in to Mac OS X has been neglected and Plex is light-years ahead of it.
Currently there are no CableCard solutions for Mac, but there are Clear QAM and ATSC solutions, or in Europe DVB-S/S2 and DVB-C and DVB-T.
The one thing a Mac currently cannot do, not even with Plex, is to play Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD as there is no suitable hardware for the Mac to do this, the built-in hardware uses a mini TOS Link which can only do Dolby DTS (5.1) and even though in theory the Mini DisplayPort could carry Dolby TrueHD Apple have not provided this ability. This only really applies to Blu-Ray as I am not aware of any broadcasters using TrueHD or DTS-HD.

• Windows Media Center Weak/No TV Signal until I restart...

SYSTEM INFORMATION:
I have Windows 7 x64 Home Premium installed on my system. I have a dual TV DVB-T Tuner installed (Geniatech T1880). I have an ASUS M2N68-CM Motherboard, 3.1GHz AMD 64 Dual Core CPU, 4GB DDRII RAM, 1TB HDD space, ATi Radeon HD 4350 512MB Graphics Card.
PROBLEM:
Sometimes, when I try and watch TV on my PC, I get either no TV Signal, or Weak TV signal, no matter what I do, whether its rescan, try new cables, try another Arial socket, none of these work, however, if I just restart, it seams to kick the tuner back into action again, this works every time, although I cannot find what could be causing the issue in the first place.
Any ideas? Any suggestions would be helpful!
Michael.

I have tried the software that the user recommended on the other forum from PetrPruner 's post. That proved for me that my drivers seam to be fine, however, I'm currently in the process of installing some of the latest drivers, and I will report back on that soon!
I also just received a Windows Update from Microsoft regarding Windows Media Center for x64 systems, so I'm going to run some testing, and I'll get back to you on that as well, hopefully with some details on the update itself, and where it can be downloaded if it doesn't come through for anyone.
Update: The latest Windows Media Center update hasn't worked at all for me, no better no worse.
Incase anyone else wants to give it a go, and it hasn't come through Windows Update yet, here's the link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=179608
Update: I've now updated all of my drivers, and flashed my BIOS... Updating the drivers did nothing but waste time for me, but for others it may work, so try it! Flashing the BIOS seamed to have improved the issue, although after leaving it running for some time, its back, and just as bad, so that hasn't worked either :(
Just done a bit more research following up on PetrPruner's link, which also sugested finding drivers that use the same chipset, but what would be for a different card. This has fixed the slight spiking the DPC Latency Checker software was reporting, although it hasn't fixed the issue with Windows Media Center loosing the signal over time.

• Are there any other internet/online channels for Vista media center?

Hi,
I was just wondering if there are any other internet/online channels I can get for Vista Media Center?
I only have about 9 at the moment, and would like preferby free ones. I don't have satelite or cable tv so would like online ones, is there anywhere that I can get sky one without a satellite dish as prison breaks on soon.
Enjoy your weekend.
Ian

I dont think you will be able to find a free Sky One channel in the internet.
But Im not expert and this is only my personal opinion.
If you dont have a satellite or cable TV you could buy a DVB-T TV tuner and maybe then you will be able to receive more TV channels using MCE ;)

• PE5 add-in for Vista Media Center

I upgraded from PE$ -> 5 a while ago and noticed that I lost the media center icon for photoshop elements.

What is the media center icon?

• 5600-VTDR256 (Alternative to Media Center II for watching TV)

Hello, I would like to know if there is any alternative application that I can use to watch TV instead of Media Center II.
I would really hope that there are other softwares available that play out anything that the nVidia WDM drivers give them.
Reasons for shifting are:
When watching TV on Media Center the bottom 2 inches of screen are cropped in the software, and the picture is very slightly narrowed (as in its made a square forcefully)
Media Center always mutes my Wave/Mp3 sound on startup and on exit doesn't fix this and put the Line In on full.
Media Center on exit turns on the power management icon in the task bar which appears after reboot, and I have to turn off the option (Always show power management icon in task bar) manually.
If anyone can help out it'll be really appreciated.

do a search of these forums and/or google them for reviews/pros/cons of the following MCD II alternatives:
Dscaler 4.1.8 (i use this for watching TV)
WinampTV
VirtualVCR
FlyTV
ChrisTV
intervideo winDVR (i use this for timeshifting and recording)
powerDVR (or whatever it is called from cyberlink)
good luck.
sorry i can't help with your errors on MCDII. i had similar issues and deleted it.
regards

• Cute - no media center in 8.1 eval - what do i do now? i paid for it already

cute, i bought win ver 8 and media center from ms and expensive expansion cards to see hdmi
ms knows what I bought from them and know I may be interested in ver 8.1 and send me offer to try ver 8.1 eval,
(they didn't mention anything about media center not working)
so I installed it and now I cant see anything about media center-even though i bought it
I look around I see:
1. I can install media center from store, I go to ms store and see tons of media centers but nothing from ms
2. I need 8.1 pro
3. I can upgrade to 8.1 pro free..., no links to do so...
It would be nice to know how to get media center running or back to ver 8 with media center working-I like it a lot.
I have been using ms since 80's, believing they will get things straight some day, I am 57 now and I hope its soon
little help please.

Hi,
Did you mean you got Windows 8.1 from Windows store for free?
If so, after you finish installing this new version of Windows, we may need to add Media package by following these steps:
Control panel -> Programs and features -> Turn features on and off -> Check on the Media center item to reinstall it.
Hope these could be helpful.

• Do I need to get a new key for the upgrade to Windows 8.1 with Media Center Pack??

I currently have Windows 8 Pro with Media Center Pack (I have bought a key). What if I want to upgrade to 8.1, do I need to buy a new key to get Windows 8.1 with Media Center Pack? Or the old key could work?
