MOD, AVI, MPEG help

I recently bought a JVC Everio Camera. The camera records in MOD which is a slight problem as PREM doesnt support this. Also I have Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.
SO, with the bundled software which came with the camera I converted the file into AVI. I found out that it converted successfully but the AVI file was 17GB and to create a DVD the bit rate was very bad. Instead I converted the MODs files into MPEG2. When importing into Prem I noticed it didnt show a thumnail of the video, intstead it showed a ornage colour saying "Media Pending". Also noticing the file was indexing, I left. After over an hour it was still indeing. This is only a 5GB file at 1hr 25mins..
Please can you help me with my problem..
Do I convert back to AVI and have a bad bit rate or convert to MPEG, but you mahve to to give me the solution to the "MEDIA PENDING" and INDEXING problem??
Thanks in advance

There are a lot of articles on the .MOD format, produced by the JVD. You will probably get a lot of info from those. IIRC, there is an entry, or two, in the FAQ's. Do not limit yourself to just the PE3 FAQ's, as much of the info contained in all of them are not version-specific.
As for the conversion, what you want is DV-AVI Type II with PCM/WAV Audio. The file will be approximately 13GB/hour of Duration. That is the nature of that format, BUT it is what PE works with natively. Anything else WILL be converted internally to DV-AVI Type II.
Now, you state that the included software converts to .AVI. Do you have access to the settings that it uses? Can you specify the MS DV CODEC for the .AVI? If you are not sure about which CODEC the software produces, use G-Spot to get the full info. If you cannot set the software to produce DV-AVI Type II, then you will be better to convert once again, though that should not be necessary - probably just a setting, or two. If you cannot get to DV-AVI Type II, let us know what your full range of choices is. Someone can help you choose the best one, and likely give you steps to get TO DV-AVI Type II.
If your output is to DVD, the Export from PE will be MPEG-2, so the file size will be greatly compressed to fit on a DVD. The Duration of your final output will determine the end quality.
The better the resource files, that you feed into PE, the better the output, and also the editing experience will be. The fewer conversions that you can use, the better the quality will be and the fewer the problems, that can crop up.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • P.Pro 1.5 - Losing quality in AVI/MPEG to DVD conversion

    Hi, everyone.
Is my first time in Adobe forums and my english isn't certainly the best, so excuse me for something I'll possibly make wrong :-)
    This is my problem:
I edit a lot of videos (holidays, weddings, karting, ...) from Mini-DV tapes. No problem on edit work, neither on export to AVI or MPEG. And at this point (after export) I don't think I had lost some video quality or if had that would be slight. But when I finished the next step (convert the resulting file to DVD format) I realize that video suffers from a substantial quality lost, mainly a distortion on whites (they get much brighter and, of course, lose some of its texture). Also, not always, is noticeable a kind of yellow and red thin lines along the "objects" shape (mainly on human faces).
At first I thought that was noting about Premiere and all about the conversion from AVI/MPEG to DVD because it's when the problem occurs, but after I had experimented all kind of converting software and the problem happens all times (sometimes more, sometimes less), I become to think the problem may be in Premiere exporting settings.
So, these are my Premiere exporting settings:
Export to AVI: File -> Export -> Movie
    Some important settings:
General: File Type: MS DV AVI

I also thought the problem could be on the hardware but a few months ago I made an upgrade on my computer and changed CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Graphics card (had an AMD Sempron 2800+, 2 GB DDR and an ATI 9600 Pro 128MB) and the problem still remains...
Actually I think it match all the needs:
CPU: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard: ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2 (chipset: VIA Apollo PT880 Pro)
    RAM: 2x 1GB DDR2
    Graphics card: Asus EAH2600 512MB
    Windows XP Pro with SP2
I don't care about time CPU will spend to do the task - before the upgrade it tooks aprox. 5 hours to convert a video and now it tooks only 1h30m :-). What is really important is obtaining the most quality DVD video can be possible. Can you help me?
Perhaps someone already asked for something like my problem. If so, please excuse me and give me the link to that question.
Many thanks to all of you in advance.

    Dag Norum:
First of all, thank you for your quicly reply ;-)
Second, I'm very sorry to make a reply almost a month after your answer. The reason is that I went on holidays without an opportunity to test your tip.
I used Harm's link and than reached to a Bitrate of 8.0000 for all three fields (Min., Target and Max.) and that makes all the difference. Now I have a video with very good quality.
But I haven't tested your tip yet to see if that improves the video final quality.
I want to work always with the maximum quality, no matter what time is needed to convert the video and no matter the length (GB) it costs.
Do you think I can export to an uncompressed file (avi for windows and compressor set to none) and than make the Menus with Encore? It wouldn't be better work on Encore with an MPEG2 file? The DV compressor is MPEG2, isn´t it?
And why you suggested to not have the "Optimize stills" checked? This is to optimize the frames without movement, isn´t it? Many times I use photos inserted in the movie. This option isn't good for that?
Your last suggestion, to go directly from timeline to the end target (MPEG2) is much different than that I use (DV compressor)?
If you could answer my questions I would appreciate.
    Many thanks!
(sorry if my english isn't the better)

Sorry, I'd made a mistake.  When I answer to you I didn't realise that your sugestions was to AVI exportation and not to MPEG2.
Of course you are absolutely right: for an intermediate file, no compression is always better than some compression :-)
But my question about not have the "Optimize stills" checked remains. What does it makes, really?

  • Will AVI(mpeg-4) files from a still camera to work in iMovie 6?  How?

I just got Casio's new EX-Z850 still camera that shoots movies in a format they call AVI (mpeg-4). I'd like them to work in iMovie, but they don't seem to work in either iMovie or iPhoto.
In iPhoto6.0.2 the Quicktime player comes up, the clips' audio plays beautifully, but the player shows just a white screen. (On the first attempt, a message comes up saying some Quicktime component is missing.) I'm using Quicktime player version 7.0.4.
When I drag the clips into iMovie6.0.1 I get the same, great audio but just a white screen for video.
What should I do? The movies are beautiful (seemingly 30fps) on the camera's screen.

    Hey Kanjikid,
I had the same problem. My Casio EX-Z750 had the same problem when i importtem to iphoto and imove it would be a blank white screen but the audio work. I tried everything to make it work. I found this on the casio website that helped me sovled my problem. Now my AVI movies work and the picture is beautiful on the computer screen playing in imovie, iphoto, and quicktime.
    Website: http://world.casio.com/qv/download/en/avi/dl.html
Hope that would sovle you problem.

  • GF4 Ti42000 TV-Out trouble, avi, mpeg

    Hello,
I have a problem with playing media files. My TV-Out picture is good but when I try to use Windows Media Player the media file playing will not show on the TV. (i.e. avi, mpeg).  The same thing happens when I run WinProducer (provided by MSI) or DivX Player.
    Quick Time works just fine.
I'd like to blame MS but I don't believe that's true here. What is really the problem and better, what's the solution? The picture on my computer monitor is just fine.
    Thanks for your help.

It sounds like something went wrong during the burning of the DVD, and that could be many things. Have you successfully burned a DVD before? You might want to try the iDVD forums to see if they have any hints.
Unfortunately, your 800 MHz G4 is going to be really slow doing video compression. There are some things that you could do like maxing out your memory and upgrading your video card (so that the CPU doesn't have to render your screen along with compressing video) but these still won't make your computer a blazing fast system for video (might not be worth the cost to you). You can also try making sure that you don't do anything else with the computer.
Since it's taking an exceedingly long time to try the compression and view the results, it would probably be advantageous to find a small QuickTime clip on the web and use it in your tests...like some trailers for instance. It's still going to take awhile to render, but at least then you'll get to the point of errors in 4 hours instead of 12 or 28. Once you're successful with a few QuickTime clips, then cut the .AVI clip down to a minute and see if that works. At this point, you'll be able to compare successes and determine where the problem might be.
At the point in the video where you notice the squares, press space to stop, then use the left and right arrow keys to examine frame by frame to see if it's just that your video card is having a problem handling the video when it's running full speed (if it's clear frame by frame, then it'll make a good DVD). I wouldn't change the settings in iSquint yet until we determine if there's a real quality problem.

I have an Ipod touch and cannot take it off headphone mode, Can anyone help please.
    Thankyou

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • How to DEBUG a function module running in background mode? Please help!

    Hi Experts,
I am calling a function module in my ABAP code in background module using the following syntax:
CALL FUNCTION 'YBBC2_CREATE_SNAPSHOT' IN BACKGROUND TASK
              TABLES
                itab_std_format_inv = itab_std_format_inv
                itab_snapshot_inv = itab_snapshot_inv.
            COMMIT WORK.
If I put the breakpoint in the CALL FUNCTION line and execute the program, the debugger does not take me to the valled function module. This may be because I am running the function module as background task.
I cannot comment this  "IN BACKGROUND TASK" statement as well since i am debugging in Quality system where I don't have change access.
So how to DEBUG a function module running in background mode? Please help!
    Thanks
    Gopal

    Hi,
You could try to use the following trick:
    (1) Put an endless loop into the coding of your function module where you want to start debugging, e.g.
      DATA:
        lx_exit_loop(1)     TYPE c.
      lx_exit_loop = ' '.
      DO.
        IF ( lx_exit_loop = 'X' ).
          EXIT.
        ENDIF.
      ENDDO.
    (2) Call your function module in background task
    (3) Call transaction SM50 and search for the background process.
    (3) Choose from menu Program/Mode -> Program -> Debugging
Now you the debugger should bring you right to your endless loop. Set lx_loop_exit = 'X' in the debugger and continue (F5 or F6).

  • Project Server 2013: I am using Project Server Permission Mode and need help with permission assignments?

    Hi
Project Server 2013: I am using Project Server Permission Mode and need help with permission assignments?
How can I change Permissions for the individual users to see specific projects or all projects in project center and to see specific quick launch items?
    For Example: if i have 4 users, A, B, C and D. what i want is:
User A can see everything and act as a project manager or Admin.
User B can view all projects in project centre but can change the schedule or resource assignment etc.
User C can only act as approver of projects and can view all projects in project centre.
User D can only view specific projects for which permissions are given.
can i have some expert help in sorting and understanding permission modes... as i was playing with project server mode permissions and can't figure out how to apply the above scenario to set of my user.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi Ajay,
Please refer to this link for detailed explanations about PS2013 security model.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197638(v=office.15).aspx
Actually, it will take a couple of days to explain in detail the security model that is a fundamental and tricky aspect of every PS implementation. But basically, you NEVER set permissions for a single user. You have groups in which your insert users. Groups
define "what users can do". Then you associate groups to a corresponding category. Categories define "what user can see". Thus the association of a group with a category will set "what the user can do on the objects he can see". Then, for more advanced security
level, you can use the RBS that will consist in "branches" in which you'll insert users. Based on those branches, you'll customize categories to fine-tune what user can see (for projects and resources) depending on the RBS branch and level.
I'd advice you to start "playing" in a test environment with the default categories/groups that might probably cover your need.
    Concerning your 4 users:
user A : add him to the "administrator" group. Be careful that you're mentionning either project manager or administrator, which are 2 groups/categories with totally different permissions level.
user B : basically can see everything and change everything? it could be in the project manager group, assuming that there are no project visibility restrictions on the category via the RBS.
user C : waht do you mean by "approver"? Workflow approvals? Then it will be the portfolio manager group. Task update or timesheet approval? Then it is another long topic: please refer in the documentation to the "status manager" and "timesheet manager"
concepts. There are not related to the security model. In a few words, the status manager is the owner of the project plan, is defined for each task and approves tasks updates. The timesheet manager is an attribute defined for each resource in its parameters
    and approves resource timesheet.
user D : you have to define which permission level must be given to this user. Basically it could be a team member that will see only projects he's in the project team. Note that team member cannot interact with the project plan in another way than submitting
timesheets and/or tasks updates which must be approved.
Once more, those are large and complex subjects that require a deep dive into your business model and tons of tests in a test environment.
    Hope this helps.

My 6th Generation Nano Shuts down my Thinkpad, I've tried uninstalling iTunes, turning off auto sync'ing and restoring my ipod, but every time I plug in my iPod, my whole pc goes blue and then reboots in safe mode. Please Help. Thanks.

    Hello kidmango,
I am going to have to agree with planb77. Look into other drivers in your computer causing the issue, not just the nano's drivers.
It is possible that security software is the culprit. Use this:
    iTunes: Troubleshooting security software issues
You may have to restore your computer to a previous point. From before the issue started. Contact computer manufacture or Windows for steps, or do a search with a search engine.
I would test the ipod on a known good computer to see if its the ipod is the issue. My gut says no. You can set a reservation at an Apple Retail Store. Apple.com/retail .You can also test a known good ipod on your computer.
    Hope this helps.
