.mod file to be used by iMovie

Hi,
I have a JVC camera that produces .mod video files!
Does someone knows the best way to use them within iMovie?
Is there a specific plugin existing for this kind of files?
Thanks for help

What a pain in butt this whole .mod file thing is. I am on the second generation JVC EVERIO MG-MZ505 which "supports Macs", the earlier version GZ-MC500 did not. The beauty of these 3CCD video cameras is that they write directly to a hard drive, 30GB in the case of the MZ505. But the files are held captive by the lamest OEM provided editing software imaginable. So in order to do any useful editing you have to convert the files using the provided software. It’s a very time consuming process and there is a slight loss of quality when the file is converted. And Apple’s pay for MPEG2 plug-in for QuickTime does not encode these MPEG-2 Muxed files. Boo hoo.
Mr. Apple (if you’re listening), I’m guessing that most video cameras in the near future will drop the tape storage media thing and head directly to hard drive file storage. Please support this format soon.

  • What should I convert my .mod file into to edit in imovie hd 5. ?

I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG505(japanese model)the ultra fine setting records at 720*576 pixels, 8.5 Mbps with 48kHz, 384 kbps audio
The .mod files stored on the hard drive is some kind of Mpeg-2 with Dolby(2 ch) annoyance! I have freeware called 'steamclip' Which coverts this file.
Should I covert it to DV(25),DVC pro(25) or Dvc pro(50)? and if I do should i deinterlace the video?
When it comes to converting to Mpeg I've got more options than you can wave a stick at, which has become bewildering,
    I can-
export to quicktime, Mpeg with all kinds of audio options
and there's an awful lot of demux options,
I tried imovie hd 5. once with mpeg and then with dv(25)
So what do you reckon? dv or some kind of mpeg variation?
Oh and you probably guessed but I'm trying to burn it to a NTSC DVD-R
I would appreciate any advice Thanks

    bitteschön (on your keyboard: alt-o = ö) ;-))
.. hmm, well, dv, esp for 'video' as on TV and in iMovie should be 48KHz, interlaced...
that segmenting is just for use with iM≤5, which does not allow import of files larger then 2GB in size...
frame blending is, to my knowledge, only needed if you change the framerate.. e.g. you have a 15fps iNet video and try to convert it into 25fps PAL... or you do a standard conversion NTSC<<>>PAL ...
... probably Matti Haveri meets this thread, he's our Streamclip specialist ... he has a 'tutorial' on his website http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG (Matti is a little ... 'shy' of using pics on websites ... )

  • Video File Conversions for use in IMOVIE

I have a Sony DCR-DVD100 Camcorder and a Powerbook G4. Video files on the camera cannot be imported into IMOVIE for use and editing. The computer can play the files via a USB connection. The video files include VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.VOB
Can anybody offer advice or recommendations? Apparently there are downloads which will convert the files for use in IMOVIE but I need some guidance. Thanks.

    Hi billfromjohnston,
You should be able to import Quicktime movies (.mov files) into iMovie.  Are you getting an error message when you try?

  • Files able to used in Imovie?

I am new to all of this and i am trying to get going with imovie. I am trying to import my video clips from my digital camera which are saved in Iphoto. Imovie was able to import only one of my clips from iphoto and none of the others. This clip was a MVI_.AVI and all the others are MPEG. Firstly i dont know why one is automatically MVI_AVI and the others MPEG?? As i have always transferred the same way.
I thought i could solve the problem by getting quicktime pro and save the other clips as AVI.mov??? .... But when i try to import into imovie it wont work???
I wanna get started but with no clips its no fun! Please help?

Firstly i dont know why one is automatically MVI_AVI and the others MPEG?
If a file is not already edit compatible with iMovie '08, they cannot be imported since unlike iMovie HD, iMovie '08 does not automatically convert files to whatever compression format your project is in. (I.e., iMovie '08 assumes you are import the files in the format in which you wish to edit them and MPEG-1 files are "playback only" as far as QT is concerned.
I thought i could solve the problem by getting quicktime pro and save the other clips as AVI.mov??? .... But when i try to import into imovie it wont work?
Take QT Kirk's advice here. MPEG Streamclip (free) is an MPEG-based, third-party application which with convert you files to your choice of DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with appropriate forms of audio (DV, Uncompressed, AIFF, various integer, AAC, etc.) formats and retain the audio. Do not get QT Pro for this purpose as it will convert the video (as will GarageBand, iTunes, etc.) but not retain the audio content.

  • What is the best file format to use with imovie?

I am relatively new to Mac and got it for music production, but more recently I have been messing around with video and a I have difficulty dealing with Mpeg and some other file types with imovie. My question is this, what file format will automatically import into imovie the way that iphoto imports from my camera? and if they aren’t recognised, what is the best file converter??

'best' is, what iMovie is intended for - straight from tape-based or AVCHD camcorder.
'best' in terms of most versatile and offering the 'best' format (=iM's own AppleIntermediateCodec) is free Mpeg Streamclip
only for convertiing mp2, such as non-copyprotected videoDVDs, you need the 20$ mp2-playback-component ......

  • MOD file conversion into imovie

    Dear all;
I bought an GZ-MG20 JVC Harddisk Camcorder and am now struggeling to import those .mod files into imovie to create a new projec/movie.
screening the discussions i have found some suggestions on freeware to download which would enable the conversion. however, those suggestions date back to October 2006. Is there in the meantime a more userfriendly solution to my problem?
    Thanks for your help

ffmpegX or Mpeg Streamclip should be able to transcode from mpeg2 MOD files to DV streams that iMovie uses.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    http://ffmpegx.com/
MPEG Streamclip may require you to have the proprietary mpeg2 package installed. However, ffmpegX uses open source codecs (may have to download manually, but instructions are included).

  • Importing .mod files and posting them as .mov files on YouTube

I'm importing .mod files from my camcorder to iMovie directly. The videos play fine on iMovie. I then directly send them to YouTube (I believe as the QuickTime format .mov). The files import, but fail to process for viewing.
    Any suggestions?

First, do not worry, PrE7 has not harmed your files. It is just that it can only get to the Audio portion of those files, so that is all that it can display. They are still intact.
Now, with many file formats, and AVI in particular, much can be inside that file. This ARTICLE will give you some background.
With just the Audio coming through, my guess would be that the files are encoded using either DivX, or Xvid, as this is a very common problem. You can check this out with G-Spot, also mentioned in the linked article.
If the files play on your computer, then you likely have the necessary CODEC, unless you're using MediaPlayer Classic or VLC Player, as they have their own CODEC systems.
Steve's advice to convert these files is the best course of action. You may need to get the CODEC and install it (again, G-Spot will tell you exactly what you will need and if its installed on your computer). I do not know if Prizm has its own CODEC's but would assume that it uses those installed on the computer.
    Good luck,

  • How to use .mod files from a JVC camcorder?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to find the proper workflow for using .mod files from a JVC Everio model camcorder. I was able to transfer the files onto my system by simply using the included usb cable from the unit. It simply mounted the camera's flash card on my desktop and I was able to drag all of the files from it.
As others have posted, the .mod files are not accessible using the Import function in FCP. I am able to open them with MPEGStreamClip as other have suggested. My question is, how should the files be converted to use with FCP and/or DVDSP? In MPEGStreamclip the file shows the video stream as: 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 16:9, 29.97 fps, 8.40 Mbps, upper field first. I tried a few of the demux functions. The straight demux to .m2v & .ac3 yields a file that opens in QT, but it shows up as a 640x480 file and is noticably squeezed. Using the demux unscaled yields a file that opens in QT as a 720x480 file and looks somewhat better. And using the demux to headed yields as file that opens in QT as 720x404 and presumably is the correct 16:9 ratio.
Trying to use those same files in DVDSP didn't get me very far. If I create a new HD project in DVDSP I can import the straight demuxed file and the headed file. The unscaled file won't import. If I add the imported files to tracks the straight demuxed one will play in the simulator but the headed one simply shows a green screen.
I'm hoping that since MPEGStreamclip can play the files, its just a question of figuring out the proper export/conversion settings. My end goal is to produce a dvd of the footage (not exactly sure if I should be using an HD project or a SD project set to letterbox). I also need to produce a web-ready version of the footage. I haven't tried this yet but I'm assuming that one of the QT exports from MPEGStreamclip will get this done correctly.
Hopefully someone has a workable solution for these files.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi all,
I looked further on this forum and found others that had the same problem. One suggested connecting the cam corder first, then start iMovie, then wait for a few minutes. I did this and it worked!!!!!
    Problem solved.
    Thanks.

  • Working with MOD files in iMovie 08

Hello. I have a jvc everio camcorder. I started trying to import my footage with iMovie 08, but as it reads all the cam videos, it is too slow and crashes are common. I decided to copy all my MOD files to hard drive and select only the desired clips, but now, it seems I can't import directly the MOD files.
Should I change the file extension or convert the clips to work with iMovie? With iMovie 06 I must convert clips to DV, what is slow and takes a lot of time and space.
How do people with hard disk camcorders work with iMovie 08?

    Hi,
The portal component runs at the Server side - the server can't access directly to End-User files.
but you can use the FileUploader control to load the file change it at the server and post it back with the response.

  • How to convert .MOD files into .DV for iMovie import

I am urgently (and desperately) trying to import some .MOD files into iMovie 09 for editing. They were made on a JVC cam, but I only have them on HDD now. I tried renaming files to .avi, but still cannot import them. I used Handbrake to convert to mp4 files and can import them now, but quality seems to be reduced even though destination file size is similar.
Can anyone tell me how to convert the .MOD files to .DV files easily? I have read about the ffmpeg tool that you can use in the Terminal, but am not confident to do this as have never used Terminal !
Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

I have a JVC everio 30 GB hard drive video camera and I'm trying to convert the videos as well. Mine are also in mod format and my computer won't convert it either. Should I upgrade to quicktime pro 7 for $30 or just pay $20 for the mpeg-2 add-on? This is for a family camera that is used mainly for occasional family vacations/get together's. No editing, I just want to get these off the camera's hard drive because the hard drive is running out of space and I wanna be able to make them into DVDs so we have a hard copy in case anything happens to my laptop. I'm not sure which is better for my use? The add-on is cheaper but is there other advantages for me to get pro?
    Thanks for the help

  • Importing .mod files into iMovie from JVC Everio

Just bought a JVC GZ-MZ 255 camcorder which produce MPEG-2 .mod files. I have a ibook G4 with 10.4 OS and iLife '06 (contains imovie). Shouldn't imovie recognize the camera when hooked an automatically import? I have a feeling that streamclip might come into play - but is there another option? Anyone have experiece with this? Thanks!

    Hi Brady,
I have a new Everio HD that I have been fooling with all day. Finally got a clip into iMovie 6 ....but only once and I'm still figuring this out too.....if you are not using a HD camera this may or may not work for you.
The Everio Quicktime extension must be installed. (Download and install the patch if you upgrade to Leopard).
Is your camera an HD? If so you need to capture the clip in 1440 CDR not FHD (FullHighDef).
Launch iMovie 6. Create a new movie in Video format HDV 1080i . then plug in your camera via firewire.
Put the camera in playback mode (Play/REC), press the Function, select Dubbing Playback (bottom of the menu). You should get a menu with a start button now. Switch to iMovie 6 and select "Import". This should start the clip playing from the camera....you may have to hit the Start on the camera.
This should get your clips into i Movie.
We may be ably to create playlists and get them in that way too but I have not had any luck with the JVC instructions to do this. There are video tutorials on the JVC website too but again they have not worked for me.
There is also a way to get and work the FHD files but that is a USB file transfer followed by a file conversion. I'll tackle that a little later...
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • .MOD files - how do you convert to view with Imovie?

A friend has sent me a couple of video clips which have .MOD files extension, they will not open in imovie. As a recent convert to my MAC from windows I am lost, any help much appreciated as to how I either convert the file or am able to save as a new file extension.
    Thanks

I am having the same exact issue with my SD Card. My camcorder records to SD card, but I have no way of importing it. I am using iMovie 11.

  • Convert mod files to mov for imovie

A helpful person on the forum suggested I use mod converter to convert mod files to mov for imovie. I have purchased the program from the internet but am having trouble getting them to respond with registration number so as I can get started. Has anyone had this problem or do you know the telephone number for emisoft which is who I purchased it from.

wuppet, it is unfortunate that this method did not work for you... I have tested this method my self with iMovie 08 & 09 with JVC .mod files.
I can really only suggest a few things:
    1. Make sure that you are changing the .mod extension to .mpg, as I am sure that you did.
    2. Attempt to get the originals from the camera, if they're still on the camera. I know that you say that they're the wrong format but iMovie 08 and 08 both support the .mod files found in JVC hybrid cameras. But make sure that iMovie is opened and running before you attach the camera to the Mac. Also make sure that the camera is set to "playback on PC" once you plug it in.
    3. You can download the free VLC app, this will allow you to view the movies to verify that they're not corrupt somehow. You'll be required to change the extension to .mpg or .mpeg for this app to read the movies.

  • Saving iMovie '08 files for '06 use?

I just installed iMovie 08 so I use a AVCHD camera. Works great. But '08 seems to lacking many features, plus its really confusing (totally different from '06). I thought you could import into 08, save then open and edit in 06. I can't even figure out how to "save as" in 08. I found the 08 files (automatically named "my first project" and "event....") but can't open either in 06. HELP!

Thanks for the info - I read in forums and told by others that iMovie 08 readily reads video formats that '06 was not able to. So I had the assumption that '08 was an upgrade from 06. The sole reason I got '08 is for the ease of transferring my MOD extension files from my Canon FS100. Previously, I had to use Sq5 streamclip to convert the MOD files before I can do any edits in 06.
Now the clips from the camcorder readily transfer to iMovie08 but can't be opened with 06 directly, I still have to go the extra step and save the clips then open it with '06 for edits. So much for my thinking of the ease of transfer benefit!
