Modal dialog bug in Illustrator CS3, CS4 (Mac)

Using the latest point version of Illustrator CS3 and a newly installed copy of Illustrator CS4, I have noticed a consistent bug on at least two different Macs (10.5.5). This bug pops up when you have a text item with optical kerning, and you try to manually adjust the kerning between characters. The value in the kerning field of the Character Panel has parenthesis around the numbers to show that it is a calculated value. If you change the numbers, but accidentally leave the parentheses, a modal dialog pops up saying, "Invalid numeric value." It is not possible to dismiss this dialog, and it is necessary to force quit the program.
When the text is Auto-kerned, and one makes the same mistake, the parentheses are automatically removed for you.
Using Illustrator CS3 in Windows, the "Invalid numeric value" dialog pops up under the above scenario; however, one is able to dismiss this dialog and resume working.

I wasn't quite sure where to submit bug reports, which is why I posted here. However, I finally did find the bug report form on the Feedback tab of Adobe's Contact page. So I just reported this bug.

  • Cut/Paste from Word to Illustrator CS3 for Mac suddenly not working

    This issue regards Illustrator CS3 for Mac on a Mac Pro with 6 GB.
    Exactly one week ago I created a number of Illustrator files by cutting charts from a Word 2008 document and pasting them into an Illustrator document.
    In the past I have dragged the images (or clip art) or simply used Control-C or even Control-X, but by whatever method I opted for, getting the image from Word to Illustrator CS3 has not been a problem.
    Yesterday I got a new chart and a request to replace an old image - one that I had created last week on Tuesday by the Drag/Drop or Cut/Paste method.   For reasons I can't begin to imagine the process simply won't work now.
    I also find that if I simply select text in a Word Document, hit Ctrl-C and then try a Ctrl-V in Illustrator I don't get to see my text pasted in - ONLY if I already have a text block open and the cursor in place will I get to see the text copied over into Illustrator.  This is very strange and not at all how things have worked in the past - typically I would see the new Text Object just appear, and then I could move it to wherever I wanted.
    I have opened up a number of old files that I know were created with copied text and also opened the associated Word files (earlier versions of Word) and again find that I can't copy text over, or even move images over - even though I clearly could do this before.  I have also tried entirely new files - also with no success.
    I was at an Apple one-to-one session this morning and they were more than mystified by this.  I can Cut and Paste into Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can't even cut and paste from Adobe Photoshop Elements into Illustrator CS3.   I can drag the Photoshop file (from the Finder window) into the Illustrator document and poof - get my image that way, but it's as an image only.  If the base image in question is a vector image or something else having a plurality of elements, I can't then select the elements in Illustrator to change their color, delete them, or otherwise play with them.
    I have brought up a word document on another Mac system that also has Illustrator CS3 and find that it too can't drag/drop cut/paste between the two applications.   At Apple, we did confirm that such ability is operational in the new Illustrator CS4, but none of their store systems still have CS3 to provide yet a third system to test.
    I have deleted my Illustrator CS3 preferences, tried flushing the p-ram, and of course run fix and repair permissions - no dice.
    My Mac systems update daily and there is nothing in the main update log that shows anything for Adobe or Office (nor do I think there should be).  Adobe Update reports that everything is up to date, and I don't see a history file to know what might have changed in the last week.   Office also reports fully up to date and happy.
    As I can cut and paste the images into an email for Mail and into Photoshop, I am fairly certain that it is NOT a Microsoft Office 2008 issue.  The fact that another Mac with Illustrator CS3 also can't cut and paste suggests that is is really not something personal to my main system.
    It is almost as if this is some clandestine "update" intended to encourage me to buy Illustrator CS4.  Given that I bought Illustrator CS3 less than a year ago, I really am not eager to buy the new version.   The greeting on the Adobe Support page that CS3 is no longer the current version and therefore supported was most annoying.
    I am really hoping that someone out there has an idea of what to try changing, removing and/or adjusting with respect to Adobe Illustrator CS3.

    I tried the Select by Path option - can't believe I missed it - and found it made no difference.
    I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app.  When I tried to simply re-install (can't remember it's exact phrase) it got part way through and then demanded another disk - but I only have one DVD with the application - the extra DVD is for tutorials and it didn't accept that one either.  So I restarted that process and chose to completely uninstall.  Then reinstalled - hey with only my one disk - gee, just like the first time.   And then it seemed to work.
    I was not aware of the save as PDF option - but yes I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac so that option is there - and it seems to work too.
    There were of course a slue of updates, and I let them all proceed - but even with them all in place the system is fine and I can once again drag and drop / cut and paste things back and forth.   I just tried a text block and "The Quick Brown Fox" pasted in with a clipping mask about 10 times the size of the document, but other than that it was ok.
    So I have things working again on my primary system.   Will try and figure out what's wrong with the other one - but a reinstall might be the easiest game there too.

  • How to create a new tab to a dialog box in Illustrator CS3 Plug-in?

    Hi,
    Im creating a dialog using Plugin in Visual Studio 2005. I need to add another dialog in tab.
    For example in the existing sample dialog another dialog Test has to be added.. How this can be done?
    Anyone guide me..

    It sounds like you're trying to get a floating panel dialog to dock with another one -- is that the case? If so, that's what I was trying to clarify earlier in the thread; there are tabs on modal dialogs, and there are tabbed docked panels, and they're two different things
    If you're trying to dock two panels, you're on the right track -- you can definitely use sADMDialogGroup->SetTabGroup(). It does require you to know the name of the dialog group you're adding it to though. Typically, you use this functionality to restore a panel to wherever it was when Illustrator was last running, and you use preferences to store the value in the meantime. If you're just trying to stick two dialogs together, you need to make sure of a few things:
    1) They're both using a dialog style from this list: kADMResizingFloatingDialogStyle, kADMFloatingDialogStyle or kADMTabbedFloatingDialogStyle.
    2) They have to both have their Tab Group set to the same string value.
    That should dock them together, but again, typically you just grab the tab group on shutdown and save it to preferences, then on load read it from preferences and set it on the dialog again. That way they get regrouped wherever they last were.

  • Illustrator CS3 Compatibility MAC and Windows

    Hello.
    I've been asked to provide Adobe illustrator CS3 to 2 users. One is on a MAC operating OS X 10.4 and the other is on a Windows XP sp2 machine. Now the users are going to be sending files to each other but I've heard rumors that Illustrator is compatible sending files one way but not the other....can any one clarify this?
    Thanks in advanced
    Mike

    Cross platform files work well from my experience. just avoid few platform specific things
    e.g
    1. use open type fonts
    2. avoid placing-linked files from network e.g. on windows placed-linked file from a UNC location like \\machine1\share will make your file useless on mac
    3. files are associated on windows through extension so if you do not have a file with extension .ai you cannot double click on it to open on windows.
    etc..

  • LOST TOOLS PANEL in Illustrator CS3 for Mac !

    I recently installed Adobe CS3 for Mac on an iMac G5 OS X 10.4.11.  Photoshop works great with no problems.  However in Illustrator I cannot get my Tools Panel to appear.   My "WINDOW" pull down menu in Illustrator only has the following options: "New Window", "Minimize Window", "Bring All to Front", "Attributes", "Info" and "Type".  The "VIEW" pull down menu has many options but none seem to open up the Tools panel. None of my Drawing Tools, Shape Tools, Cutting Tools, Moving Tools etc are visible!
    I have uninstalled and then re-installed CS3 to no avail.  I have tried to reset the Adobe software preferences by simultaneously holding down "Command+Option+Shift+Control" during Illustrator launch, a tip I found online but it also failed to work.
    PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks!

    This is what i think is wrong.
    i think though you have installed AI three times you have also made an alias of the applications icon, or what you thin is an alias.
    But what you probably have done is to make a copy of the application outside of the application folder.
    If in fact you do think that you are launching fro an alias trash the alias and not and make a new one by holding down the command and option key as you drag the icon. What you probably did was only hold the option key down which made a copy of the application outside the application folder which could prevent these features from loading.
    Now I have also heard there is a software conflict that can cause this but I admit I do not recall what that is.

  • Illustrator CS3 & CS4 crash on launch

    Have used CS4 without problems on OSX 4.11 for 9 months. After doing an Adobe Update after Xmas, Illustrator started crashing on launch. Tried Illustrator CS3 and it crashed too. InDesign crashes when I try to export or package or place anything from Illustrator. Bridge has crashed a few times. Photoshop stable but gives "quit unexpectedly" message when I close it. Have uninstalled entire Design Suite CS4 & CS3. Reinstalled CS3. Trashed Acrobat Reader 9 and all Adobe prefs and settings that I could find. When I trashed the newest Illustrator CS3 settings folder from the User Library it made Illustrator take less time to crash on launch. I am missing my deadlines. What to do?

    What to do?
    Handle these things correctly. Sorry to say so, but you made your own mess.
    - Uninstall everything Adobe using the proper uninstallers as far as possible
    - Run the CS3 and CS4 Clean Scripts from the support pages
    - Delete the caps.db in Library:Application Support:Adobe:caps
    - reinstall - first CS3 + updates, then all CS4+updates

  • Saving as Version 8 from Illustrator CS3/CS4..

    Hi,
    I am facing a problem and that is:
    I have created a file with multiple indipendent paths in CS3/CS4 and saving it in Version 8, now when I open the file again in CS3 all the paths that I have renamed before loose there name.
    eg: 1 turns back to <path>
    Kindly suggest what to do.

    Deepti Nanda,
    I am afraid it is necessary to rename in 8. There is almost an abyss between CS3/CS4 and 8, and you are lucky you have not had to deal with the text engine issue (I hope).

  • Corrupted 80% file Illustrator  CS3 with MAC OSX 10.5.4

    I dont succeed to open the greater part of our file CS2 and CS3 saved in local or in network.
    this is the error message:
    "impossible to read the file because plug-in it has not been able to interpret these file".
    original its in IT lenguage :"Impossibile leggere il file perché il plug-in non ha potuto interpretare questo file"
    i use Mac OSX 10.5.4 illustrator release 13.0.1 for manage font, Linotype FontExplorer X last release. its very hark to work in this situation :s...

    #1) Update to Illustrator 13.0.2
    #2) It's always been Adobe's stance that you should
    never save and open files across a network because corruption can happen. Work locally, then copy to the server.

  • Illustrator CS3 with Mac OSX 10.5.8

    I am currently working with CS3 applications on my iMac G5 PowerPC, running OSX 10.4.11
    I have a good opportunity to purchase and install an upgrade to OSX 10.5.5. I then plan to use Apple's Software Update to bring it up to the most current version of the OS, whidh I think is 10.5.8
    My only concern is whether switching to the more current OS will affect my use of CS3 applications in any way...
    (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge)
    Does anybody know the answer to this?

    I'm in the same paradigma, I'm afraid if I change to OS 10.5, my CS3 go into some troubles....
    Some body knows any way to install the new OS 10.5 keeping the old 10.4  just for safe....?

  • Adobe Illustrator CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6 and CC failed to install. Error 7.

    Hi,
    About a year ago I've updated my OS to Mountain Lion (if I remember well) and Illustrator stopped working. So I've uninstalled it and tried to install it again but it didn't worked. The installation failed every time. I've tried every Illustrator from CS3 to CC but nothing worked. And I just gave up, but now I really really need the program and I'm not good at fixing things on my Macbook, so is there someone who can give me a hand?
    PS. I'm getting an "error 7" when I try to install it.
    Thank you so much!

  • "Verdana missing" bug in illustrator CC on Mac

    Hi Adobe,
    I just called your outsourced phone support at the request of the tier 1 support/chat and they were unable or unwilling to address this issue and I was told to start a new thread here to try to get the attention of the programmers. For some reason, Illustrator CC stops working randomly, and asks for the font Verdana. It's installed, and active, in all 4 flavors but Illustrator can't or won't see it. In my experience a restart fixes the issue, but it will return again within a week and this has been happening since about mid-December 2013, or about 2 months. I am up to date on all cc files, and am running OSX v10.9.1 and I find it a vexing problem that this verdana font, which I *never* use is crashing your software and I see it as a threat to my livelyhood and sanity! What is being done to fix the dependancy that Illustrator has on this font? Why don't the tech people know about the issue when it is clearly a known issue on the discussion boards? Why are your previous threads about the issue closed without a clear resolution? What changed in the most recent version to create this dependacy on a system font that has *no business* being used for design work? I await your response...

    Yes Monika, they are there as I previously stated....
    **please do not post to this thread without reading the issue first, what we are talking about here is a program bug which has been reported to adobe and unless you are an adobe programmer you can't solve the issue***

  • After Effects CS3/CS4 Mac to PC compatibility

    I am using After effects at school and they run on PC (with CS3). At home I work on a brand new iMAC OSX Leopard (with CS4). After Effects in Leopard recognizes the file I start to work on at school. But if I work on it on my iMAC, when I open the files in After Effects on school's PCs, it won't open. Is there anyway to get compatibility on both sides?

    TimeRemapper is right, but there are a few relatively small things to keep in mind for cross-platform compatibility:

  • Crash when I try to open or place a file in Illustrator CS3 on Mac

    What the hell has Adobe done to the stability of Illustrator? It's gone consistently downhill the past few releases. Now I can't even open or place a file without it crashing!

    Adobe has laid off many of their experienced quality assurance engineers and outsourced those jobs overseas to low-paid, inexperienced computer science grads, and has relied too heavily on automated and white box testing here at home, rather than real-world use of the software (black box testing) during the development cycle! That is why the quality of their flagship applications has suffered significantly in the past 5 years. Adobe apps are now "crash prone" in my experience. Sadly, MS Office apps are now more stable than Adobe apps on my MacBook Pro and Windows PCs.
    Save often, if you want to avoid data loss that is, if your Adobe app will even launch and open a file without crashing first. Ridiculous!
    InDesign and Photoshop are still fairly stable, but crashes abound in Acrobat, After Effects, Illustrator, and the others.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes at launch (Mac OS 10.6.8)

    Hello everyone,
    Can somebody please help me out from this.
    I'm using Illustrator CS3 on Mac 10.6.8. As I remember, I had installed some new fonts which I doubt it may have caused the error. I tried removing the User>Library>Preferences>Illustrator Settings folder. Plus I validated all the fonts including the new fonts on FontBook. Still negative. So I can't figure out what's the actual cause and how to troubleshoot it.

    code,
    Item 11) in 5) in the list below is about font cashes; item 1) is about moving fonts (Illy may reject fonts that go through validation). You may also try to move preferences/folders as described in 4). 6) may be needed.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
    In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • ADM CheckBox on Mac OS X on Modal Dialog

    I am trying to add a modal dialog under the Illustrator menu for the plugin I am writing.
    The modal dialog is showing up and the popups I am using are working correctly but I am having problems with my checkbox. When I call SetBooleanValue on my CheckBox If I pass in false or 0 it seems okay but if I call SetBooleanValue to set the checkbox to checked by passing true the checkbox does not appear. I believe the checkbox is checked because I need to click on it twice to get the checkbox to appear. In Illustrator I can check and uncheck the checkbox manually fine. When I try and use GetBooleanValue to get my value of the checked item it always returns 128.
    The behavior is the same under AI 3 or AI 4. I am using a DLOG resource in a adm.rsrc file that I have added to my project. Any help would be appreciated.
    /// setting value
    ADMBoolean checkBoxValue = lBoolValue; // 0 or 1
    sADMItem->SetBooleanValue(sADMDialog->GetItem(dialog, kStoreTextItem) , checkBoxValue);
    /// gettting value
    ADMBoolean bShouldStoreText = sADMItem->GetBooleanValue(sADMDialog->GetItem(thisDialog, kStoreTextItem));
    /// bShouldStoreText always returns 128
    Grant Hickey

    Why is it so hard to specify ADM item in MAC resource file?
    I want to create a check box
    resource 'CNTL' (someItemId, purgeable) {
        {04, 14, 18, 14}, // top, left, bottom, right
        visible,
        ItemID, // ProcID
        0,
    The ItemID specifies the checkbox, but where do you find all these IDs?
    The only place I can find is in the samples.
    No documentation for this type of stuff anywhere!
    I don't know how you guys tolerated this rubbish all these years.
    Please help!!!!!!
