Mode conditioning cables for MMF.

Hi,
I have a building on campus, which is connected to my core switch over obsolete MMF (the link is approx 500m, but I can't indentify what type of fibre cable it is). Recently I upgraded core switch from 4006 to the new 4506E. In the 4006 I used GBIC SX modules on both ends, but after the upgrade I can't use those anymore. It seems that I need SFP LX/LH (cisco part GLC-LH-SM) on the core side and GBIC LX/LH (cisco part WS-G5486) in the access switch. Could you advice if I need mode conditioning cables to make it work? I figured that for my set up I'd need 1x LC to ST (core to patch panel) and 1 ST to SC (patch panel to switch). Help please...
thanks,
forman

I have question regarding your network.
1) Are you planning on using the installed “obsolete MMF” that you were using with the 4006 switch or is there some other fiber you will be using (what type)?
If you are using the original “obsolete” MMF, then you should be able to install a GLC-SX-MM SFP in the 4506E and connect to the original SX GBIC in the access switch.
If you will be using the original "obsolete" MMF with the 1000Base-LX/LH transceivers, then you will need a mode conditioning patch cord (MCPC) at each end.  These cables are available from many suppliers. Below is a link to a vendor that sells MCPCs that have the ST connectors you need

  • SFP/mode conditioning

I have some Catalyst 3560 switches that I need to connect over a long distance. The existing backbone is 62.5 850nm multimode and unfortunately I dont have the option of installing single mode fiber at this point. The distances range from 2000' to 6000'.
My question is - is this possible? and what parts would I need to make this work at 1GB/s?
I'm looking into the possibility of using a mode conditioning cable on both ends and a single mode SFP adapter for the switches. However, all I can find on the mode conditioning cables reference 1300nm and our existing fiber is 850nm. Is this a limitation of the existing fiber? Are there mode conditioning cables that support 850nm or does the SFP dictate what wavelength we are using?
    Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the following Cisco document on operating 1GE over 62.5um MMF up to 2km....

    <http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/prod_bulletin0900aecd80425a37.html>
Depending upon your equipment, the GLC-LH-SM will probably be the SFP for your equipment.  You can look at the following compatibility document...

  • Long Haul Mode-Conditioning MultiMode GBICs?

We have a fairly large legacy installation of Catalyst 3500s interconnected with 62.5 MMF. Most of the links more than 200m or so have these old Allied Telesyn EX-1002 "range extenders" which are alleged to be able to run up to 2km over MMF without the use of mode conditioning cables. And they do seem to be work as stated, we hve a couple runs just shy of 1km and they have been staying up.
The EX-1002s are starting to die off and I can't find a similar product. Actually, I can't find any technical information at all on the EX-1002, they say "1000-baseX" and seem to be longwave. Since they are said to operate at 2km, is mode conditioning built-in to the device?
The only other way around this is to use generic LX/LH GBICs and mode conditioning cables, which are very expensive. Or maybe just buy some EX-1002s on Ebay?
But, is there a GBIC available that is Catalyst 3500 compatible that can do long-haul multimode gigabit?
    Thanks,

At the risk of bumping this topic too late, thanks for all the replies.
We have got everything working, but have not yet bought any mode conditioning cables. It seems to be cheaper for me to fiddle around with randomly swapping GBICs and patch cables, than systematically installing mode conditioning cables on all our links. :-(
    A few observations:
    - We have 1 or 2 links in the 300 - 400m range operating consistently on 62.5μ MMF with an LX GBIC on one end an an Allied EX-1002 "1000baseSX to 1000baseX" converter on the other (the "1000baseX" is long-wave. don't know if it's 1300 or 1310nm.)
    - We have several links in the 300 - 500m range operating consistently  on 62.5μ MMF with Allied "range extenders" at each end. We will replace these with LX GBICs and mode conditioning cables as the Allied devices die off.
    - We have quite a few SX links operating in the 200 - 300m range, 1000baseSX to 1000baseSX. Occasionally we have had problems getting these to link up with a GBIC on one or both ends. As you would expect from the technical description of mode dispersion this is hit--and-missand randomly dependent on combinations of GBIC and patch cable. SFP-based SX links seem to link up more reliably at distances over 200m. (Perhaps because the tolerances are more precise and/or the SFPs are new and not old GBIC that have been sitting in some network admin's desk for 5 years.)

  • SFP and Mode Conditioning Patch Cable

Is it safe to assume any SFP designed for single mode fiber  (i.e., MGBLH1) can work with multi-mode fiber if using a mode conditioning patch cable?

It should work. The "mode conditioner" adds a loss in your optical link, typically 2 db.
If you want be sure you must do a link budget.
    Regards.

  • X2-10GB-LX4 Mode Conditioning Patch or Not 62.5micron Fiber

I keep reading different things across the web.  We are swapping out our SUP 720's with the newer VSS Sup 720's for the VSS technology.  During the process we are going to start bringing 10Gb in.  We have an existing FDDI (62.5 Micron MM) fiber plant.  We purchased these with the X2-10GB-LX4 fiber modules designed to do 300m over 62.5 Micron fiber...  Do we need a mode conditioning patch cord on each end?  It would seem Cisco says yes or use the GBIC over single mode?  I thought this was a multi-mode X2 module...  I'm quite confused!!!

If you use the X2-10GB-LX4 transciever with 62.5 micron MMF, you need a Mode Conditioning Patchcord (MCP), part number CAB-GELX-625= or similar, on each end.
The -LX4 module it designed for MMF.  In order to get a 10G signal through 300m of multimode fiber (which was originally designed for short, low bit rate paths) the LX4 module engineers used 4 coupled laser transmitters to send the information through the fiber.  The Mode Conditioning Patchcords focus this laser light into the optimum section of the multimode fiber's core, so that it can reach the distant receiver and be successfully decoded.
This module, without the use of the MCPs, can be used on singlemode fiber (SMF).  But, this module is more expensive that a standard SMF transceiver (LR or LRM) due to its use of 4 lasers and the WDM multiplexing integrated into the transceivers.
    Does this help at all?

  • Video cable for the Iphone 3G - audio only, no video output to TV

I have been reading that with the iphone 3G you HAVE to buy apples video cables in order to play back video on your TV, is this true?
I just got a cable for christmas and it isn't officially licensed by apple and the video does not output to the TV, only the audio. I hope this isn't the case, but maybe it is true??
If my cable isn't working because of some need (forced on us by apple) to only use "apple" cables I will never purchase videos from itunes. It seems rather trivial to have to buy proprietary cables for more $$ in order to buy videos from itunes doesn't it??
In other words... Give us more money so you can keep buying things from us.
Sorry, I am a bit frustrated.

    Let's be constructive:
BUT WHY doesn't it work? and how can we fix it/make it work?
my cheap 'non apple' video cable works fine initially, then a message pops up about it not being an 'offcial' cable or some such, then asks if I want to enable airplane mode (both with or without it already disabled), and disables video out completely. Contrary to the many others that have overpaid for your proprietary cables; I'm NEVER EVER EVER EVER going to pay you for your atrociously overpriced cables, because you're action of 'disabling' 3rd party cables is monopolistic in any sense, destroys any hope competition in this area, hinders innovation by third party peripheral developers, and is downright unamerican imho because it does so. You've gone to far this time apple! I've come to the conclusion, you obviously don't care about functionality, as your hardware is almost always overpriced, proprietary, good looking junk, and you keep shaking my pockets for more money with your overpriced accessories and constant barrage of itunes streamery.
Anyway, how can I use my device to do video out on this officially licensed apple dock I have? It doesn't seem to work; and I paid a lot of money for it. If there isn't a solution; maybe you should give out refunds for all the devices that now don't work? Thanks

  • Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different?  When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different?  When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Blue Screen On eMac From Generic USB cable for a digital camera?

I recently got a digital camera from a friend and ordered a $2 usb cable to upload my pics. it uploaded them fine but the next time i started my computer i got a blue screen with only the mouse curser on it. i unplugged the cable and tried to start it again and it worked but then it froze again. now every time i start it ( with all the cables unplugged except for the mouse and key board ) it goes to the blue screen.

If you boot in Safe Mode and open Applications/Utilities/Console, can you view the logs (e.g. system.log, CrashReporter logs, panic.log, etc.) looking for events tagged at the time of one of the blue screen starts? Look for indications that the eMac was trying to load some library or start some service, and never came back from that.
How did you upload the pictures from the camera? Did you use a Mac program iPhoto or Graphic Converter or the like, manually drag the photos in the Finder, or did you use camera software? That you can boot in Safe Mode (which disables third-party drivers) but not normally raises the possibility that camera-specific software installed incompatible drivers onto your hard drive. Not that all camera manufacturer software is suspect by any means (Kodak EasyShare works OK on my eMac, for instance), put it's possible some third-party software written for Intel Macs would install itself on your PPC eMac.
If you did use third-party camera software, you have some options. Check the camera manufacturer's website and see if there's a updated installer for the software, especially one for your OS version, and most especially if there are different PPC and Intel versions. If you find a more recent or more PPC-specific version, download that onto CD-R and install it on the eMac after booting in Safe mode.
Another option: boot in Safe Mode, and look for anything you can be certain was installed by the camera software. Look for manufacturer/model name and/or install date. Look at the root level of your hard drive in the Library and System/Library folders, since the eMac is going to blue screen before you ever get to the login prompt (note: if your eMac is set up to automatically log you you, extend the search to your home directory Users/yourname/Library folder as well). Besides searching by name (command-F) on the hard drive, you can manually inspect folders to spot things that may not occur to you to plug into the search box. Some places to look:
    /Library/Application Support
    /Library/Extensions
    /Library/PreferencePanes
    /System/Library/Extensions
    /System/Library/Contextual Menu Items
You can move suspect software to a holding folder (don't delete anything yet!) and then see if a normal start will work.

Still u have to maintain the condition record for the archive mode also. Becoz  what are the document type u want to archive is defined in the o/p records.
suppose u want to archive billing documents types F2,F1etc...
then goto--> vv31-> enter RD00->enter the billing documnt type-. now click teh communication button on the top -
    > here u will find the storage mode. Means the docuemnts which are created with F2 are archived.

  • Iphone stuck in headphone mode - swapped cables, still the same problem!

The silent switch on my iPhone had stopped working so I bought a new housing from ebay and decided to swap the back around at the same time.
I noticed the little switch on the silent button had broken on the old one, so bought a new jack cable.
Put it all back together and the silent switch and everything is working fine apart from the phone thinking it's in headphone mode when it isn't
I've tried all of the fixes and nothing works. I was hoping it was a faulty cable, so asked the guy to send a new one. That arrives this morning and it is exactly the same 'Headphone Mode'
I've just plugged the old cable in and it's saying the same thing, even though it didn't before.
Does anyone have ANY idea what else I could try? It doesn't seem like it's a problem with the actual cable so I'm hoping it's nothing too drastic.
    Please help!
    Cheers

Does anyone have any other ideas? I've just installed 3.1 on the phone and no difference. Really don't know what else to try.
Somebody else mentioned the two different types of jack cable for the 2g iPhone one that was the reverse, but why would my original cable still think the headphones are in when they're not
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi all,
I want to use if condition in for-each-group. Basically my requirement is that i want to use dynamic grouping. There will be two groups and the upper group and lower group will be selected on the basis of a report parameter.
I hope i made it clear enough. So please help me in this. Any ideas will be highly appreciable.
    Thanks and regards
    Naveed

You can add a If condition filed after the for-each field
    for EG : <?if:ADDRESS_TYPE = 'Employee Address'?>
and then add anothet field which has <?end if?>
    Hope this helps.
