Model 600 wireless-N signal fluctuates

Dear Folks,
I work for a grading contractor here in North Carolina and my job is to get their offices hooked up to the internet.  Unfortunately, I’m having a strange situation with the wireless network I am trying to hook up.  The facility at which I work has three physical buildings.  I’ll call them A, B and C.  Building A is wired for internet access so I bought the Linksys 600 wireless-N router which I hook directly to my cable modem.  All the PCs that are wireless in building A work great.  They all have the WUSB300N wireless antennas.
Building B is about 75 feet from building A.  In that building, we have one PC with the WUSB300N antenna.  The antenna in Building B is in the window and directly faces the model 600 router in building A.  It is in a direct line of site.  You can look out the building B window and clearly see the 600 router.
Building C is about 125 feet from building A and there is one PC in that building and it has a WUSB300N antenna.  The antenna in Building C is up on the second floor in front of an open gable vent.  You can see the model 600 router in building A from the gable vent so it too is in a direct line of sight, just further away.  And now for the situation.
As I mentioned, the PCs in building A have no communication problems.  They work great.  The PCs in Buildings B and C get intermittent reception.  They start out with a GOOD reception and then it goes down to LOW and then VERY LOW and then it is gone.  A few minutes later, it comes back to GOOD.  This happens all day long.  At first, I thought that there could be something wrong with the 600 router in building A but what is really strange is there are two other Linksys wireless routers in the neighborhood that I “see” (both are G’s) and when our model 600 signal disappears, so do all the other signals from the neighbors’ routers.  It seems as though our building could be in an RF dead area or there is something killing the air in which these signals travel.  Has any one ever seen a problem like this before?  Thank you for your time!  Chris

The WUSB300N is a 2.4 GHz only device, so any microwave, cordless phone, etc can degrade your reception (just as with the wireless G/B devices).
A WUSB600N is a dual band just like your WRT600N, and there is less noise on the 5 GHz frequencies.  Also on the WRT600N, you can safely set the 5 GHz band to wireless-N only and keep the 2.4 GHz band as mixed mode (to cover wireless b/g and 2.4 GHz only n).  Just keep in mind at 5 GHz any solid object (including your hand), in front of the antenna can degrade the speed.
Changing channels might work, reducing external noise on 2.4 GHz will be the best bet if it not a channel conflict (move the microwaves and other devices, or notice if they are being used when it degrades).

I upgrade to iOS4, and now my iPod Touch 3rd gen's WIFI signal fluctuates now matter how close I am to my Airport. I can be right next to the Airport and the signal will go back and forth from one bar to three bars. Never happened with OS 3.1.3.

For those having Wi-Fi issues... What level of encryption are you using on your routers? And is your router at full power? I'm not really having any Wi-Fi issues, I'm using WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] and I switch my router to full power after I started having the iOS4 batter problem. (it was on "Neighbor Friendly" Mode). I was worried that a weaker signal would contribute even more to the already existing battery drain and I'm figuring that having the encryption on the highest level is also affecting the battery as well, but I haven't tested the difference.
Using WEP + hidden SSID at home (I have some devices that choke on WPA). Open WiFi access with authentication at work. Router signal boosted from 42mW to 70mW using Tomato firmware.
Also, if you're using a Pre-N router, disabling "Neighbor Friendly" mode means you're using a ton of 2.4GHz channels. This prevents any neighbors near your home from using WiFi, because you've stolen all of the available channels. I had to set up my sister-in-law on Wireless-A, because her backyard neighbor hates her, and turned off "Neighbor Friendly" mode on his router. What a pain.

  • WRT110 Signal Fluctuates Badly

I have a WRT110 wireless router and the signal fluctuates widely and frequently.
The thing runs from -40dbm to -80dbm and back within minutes causing frequent disconnects.
Other networks in the area are rock solid and do not fluctuate.
PC is an HP Pavilion Elite, Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.
Router and PC are about 20 feet apart.
I Googled and found many people who are having the same issue but didn't see a solution.
Wired connection to router is solid but wireless is unusable.
    Any ideas?

If you have the latest firmware on your router, I would still suggest you to flash the firmware, reset and re-configure the router...
Also adjust the Wireless Settings :
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect, and if you have a stable connection...
if the above fails, In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best...
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna (if external) should be vertical.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card and observe the connection...

  • JBL wireless subwoofer signal now interferes with my Apple TV wireless signal.

Ever since the newest software update, my Apple TV wireless signal interferes with my wireless subwoofer signal, immediately shutting off the music I am playing via Apple TV.  I have had my Apple TV since December 2011 with the same exact speaker set up and wireless internet and it worked fine - everything was compatible.  Ever since the latest software update (I updated my ATV software around the time when Apple released the 1080 HD Apple TV last month) my wireless subwoofer's signal interferes with the streaming wireless signal, immediately shutting down the music that's playing through ATV.
It is obviously the subwoofer because everything works fine when I switch the subwoofer off.  I have tried changing the channel of my woofer and the frequency of my wireless internet, but the problem persists.
My biggest frustration is that everything worked fine and was compatible up until the last few weeks.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Any solutions or advice?
    Thanks!

It's actually your subwoofers fault. I have a Samsung wireless subwoofer and it uses 2.4 and 5ghz the same frequencies WiFi use, it is supposed to pick a channel that isn't used. It occasionally goes out for a split second.
    2.4 has channels like 1-12
5 has like 5 channels something like 145-150 or something
Your subwoofer is picking the same channel your wifi router is using. Wait I just say you said you checked your WiFi channel. Was your router on "Auto" channel selection before you changed it? Does your router support 2.4 and 5ghz? if so are both set to broadcast same network name and password?
On a computer go to http://tools.meraki.com/stumbler and see how many routers are near you and what channels they are using. What kind of router do you use?

  • Model BEFW11S4 wireless router just stopped working with Mac; still works with Windows

I have the above model Linksys wireless router, hard connected to a Windows XP Pro desktop unit. I also have a Windows XP Home laptop. My wife has a Mac PowerBook laptop. On Thursday last week her laptop started having trouble connecting to Internet. Problem is intermittent--sometimes can get on and sometimes now. When on it might connect to a web site normally or sometimes takes a long (as in loooooong) time connecting. My XP Home laptop continues to connect quickly and will move from one URL to another easily; no problems. She took the PowerBook to Panera and got on the Internet with no trouble. She was on for at least a half hour and suffered no outage or slow-downs. Came back home; got the same problems as before. Only thing that has changed is a big snow on Thursday, same day as the trouble started. The relationship is probably non-existent, but it's the only thing different from Wednesday (when working well) to Thursday (when started having trouble). Any thoughts? I naturally welcome any responses. Thanks, Michael Plog

Hello people. I'm having the same weird trouble: I'm having this BEFW11S4 to which I connect via another wireless AP and a switch a Windows XP PC and a MacBook Pro computer (both with Ethernet cable connected to the switch, to which the AP is connected). Both the above computers work seamlessly, but sometimes the other iMac I have in WLAN doesn't surf anymore. It can ping both MacBook Pro and Windows XP PC, but doesn't anymore ping the BEFW11S4. Wireless connection is crypted with WEP-64 bit key. When this is happening, also from the Windows XP PC I cannot get on the web interface of the BEFW11S4. It seems to be "locked" somehow. After unplugging the power and re-plugging it in, everything works again also on the iMac. Anybody managed to solve this issue? What version of Firware do you guys have? I have 1.50.13... regards.

  • MI424WR-Gig version and Amped Wireless SB1000 Signal Booster

Has anyone used the Amped Wireless SB1000 signal booster with the FIOS MI424WR?
If so, what are your thoughts/recommendatoins?  Which antenna does it replace or are two needed?
I did request information from Actiontec, but don't think they understood the question (see below)
    Resolution:

In regards to inquiries regarding replacement antennas you will need to contact
    Verizon at 1-888-553-1555
The MI424 isn't compatible with range extenders or repeaters or boosters as they
require a protocol called WDS (Wireless Distribution Services).
The MI424 doesn't have this wireless protocol.
To extend or improve the range you would use a wireless Access Point. An AP is a
bridge, you disable the MI424 wireless transmitter and use the AP instead.
The AP unit connects to the router by ethernet, you can then run the ethernet up
to 300 feet from the router to locate the AP where your wireless systems are.
You connect a computer to the AP and configure it to transmit the wireless.
we ourselves do not make antennas so we are unaware of what is available for
booster antennas. The connector on the Router is a Reverse SMA. In regards to
inquiries regarding replacement antennas you will need to contact Verizon at

  • WIFI & Phone Signal Fluctuation

Ever since my 2.0 update, the wifi & phone signal fluctuate randomly. Sometimes the bars are 5, then suddenly 0, wifi keeps disconnecting and asking for the wifi password again, is this an update issue?

    Matt Symons wrote:
With WIFI Turned on and 3G Turned off - Full Signal for most of the day!
3G Turned on - Signal lowers to 1 Bar in my area!
Is this because the phone is showing me the signal strength of 3G instead of the Phone signal itself?
Did you read my first post, or any of the others? I'm not sure what you mean by "Phone signal itself". 3G signal covers both voice and data, except when Wi-Fi is on. The signal strength (bars next to AT&T) is the strength of the cell network signal. If 3G is on and received, it is the 3G protocol. If 3G is off or not available, it is the Edge/GSM. If Wi-Fi is on, the phone doesn't show which one - only the Wi-Fi icon with its signal strength - when you turn Wi-Fi off, it will display which one.
Your phone dropped to 1 bar with 3G, because the 3G signal is weaker than Edge/GSM in your area. If you read the article I referred you to, you'll see that the number of bars isn't so important with 3G - for voice or data.

  • IPhone 4 signal fluctuation without case on

I have noticed that my iPhone4 running ios6 experiences signal fluctuation without my case on. The signal says "searching then no service." but when the case is on the iphone, i do not experience this issue.
    any thoughts on this?

I had the same problem with dropped calls at home and work when older 3G iPhones worked just fine. I finally purchased AT&T Microcells for both locations and that has helped a lot. My experience with the iP4 is that it drops calls more frequently than older iPhones even with the bumper whenever the signal strength is moderate to low.

  • Wireless signal fluctuates a lot.

I'm having issues with my G4 mini. The wireless signal keeps fluctuating up and down. It is connected to the internet via my Airport Express. My G4 Powerbook has no problems with the connection and always shows full siganl so I don't know what to do. Checking the speed on my mini shows a connection of about 2-10mbps but on my Powerbook the speed is about 48mbps. Please help me. I assume if there is a problem with my aiport on the mini it would either work or wouldn't, not half half.

Speed is related to signal strength so the fact the speed seems rather low would also suggest the signal really is fluctuating, not just appears to be.
There can be many reasons for variable signal, and sadly no one single one of them is certain to be a culprit. You may be suffering from interference caused by household devices such as cordless phones or microwave ovens, or even nearby wifi systems on the same or adjacent channels. Often switching channels using your Airport Admin Utility could help.
However, much can also be due to precise positioning of components, and the location of structures which can either directly impact the transmitted signal (such as duct work) or on signals being bounced around the area causing what is known as 'mulipath'. It's also possible for a number of outside influences, such as local paging systems or other radio devices, to create interference by intermodulation distortion. None of these things you can see or hear, but all can dramatically impact on signal strength from moment to moment.
And of course yes, it's possible for there to be a hardware issue resulting in poor or variable reception - typically that would be a damaged antenna inside the system, or one that is not fully connected to the airport card. In the latter instance, often the earth braid isn't firmly connected, allowing any stray RF (radio frequency) source to distort and adversely affect signal.
The first thing I would do is move the Airport Express base station and the mini around a little to see if you can get a better, more stable, signal with one or both in slightly different locations. To help in this, I'd suggest you download a copy of AP Grapher from http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ and watch for other wifi signals being listed and their relative strengths. This will tell you whether you might have an interfering wifi in your area. Also with your own wifi selected, watch the signal levels. Look to position the system and/or AE base station where it shows noise as consistently lowest and com quality as consistently high.

  • IMac wifi signal fluctuates between -24 and -80 other clients stable.

I'm experiencing Airtunes dropouts. The problem seems to be fluctuations in signal strength as shown in the screenshot in this link: http://gallery.me.com/alex.slaets#100343/wifi&bgcolor=black .
    Network:
3 Airtunes express in 802.11n only 5 GHZ mode, configured to extend the range of one wireless network.
    Clients:
    1 iPad.
    1 iMac.
All software and firmware is on the very latest version.
    Observation:
As shown in the image, the signal strength S/N remains stable at -24/-95 db for all clients in the network EXCEPT the iMac (22:FF) which fluctuates between -24 and -80 in 5 to 10 second cycles.
The iPad (C8:FB) is located near the iMac and its signal, remains stable.
Any ideas on what this might be ?

perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler (free) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. *change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those*.

  • Signal fluctuates on iPod, not on adjacent Mac

My iPod touch wifi signal strength fluctuates between one bar and full, and sometimes drops the connection, even when used next to an iMac that still shows full strength. At one stage I suspected the Netgear wireless router and replaced it with an Airport Express but there is no difference.
If I turn wifi on the iPod off and on again, the strength usually returns to full on for a while, then falls back again and randomly rises and falls. It looks like a problem with the iPod, and as it is way out of warranty I fear a fix may be expensive. Any ideas on what else I can try?
I have of course tried resetting the iPod.

When I first got the Ipod touch 3.1.3 a month ago or more the wifi worked just great. Then I got a bluetooth that didn't work and the wifi was never the same.
I have done every suggested fix for server not found error on Safari such as reset, restore, I have re-input my network password many times because of all of this. I am able to download Stanza books, but I have to try many times. It keeps saying timed out.
I couldn't even get the wifi to hardly get on the web. Now I can, but it goes nowhere, unless you like staring at one webpage because it never goes to far. Very disappointing and I don't know why it changed either. It is as if when I sync somehow Apple changed my firmware to be non-functioning with wi-fi!

  • Wireless Losing Signal in Tiger and Leopard,

    OK,
So, my MBP started dropping my signal in the house two days ago, spent 2 hrs on phone with apple care only to be told to go to apple store and see genius..Genius said wireless card bad, and replaced within 2 hours, said it was good to go! Get home and does the same exact thing.....
I have a brand new Macbook that sits 5 ft away from it and maintains full signal throughout the whole house, it came with Leopard PREINSTALLED.......I was running tiger when wireless started to fade, and when I got home tonight, I upgraded to Leopard since the disk came with my new IMAC i got two weeks ago......Leopard installed without problems, but wireless still fades when i go downstairs and my macbook still maintains full signal at the exact same places......
I downloaded ISTUMBLER, and when I am 2 ft away from AirPort Extreme base station running N only at 5ghz, my signal says 60% in Istumber with 9% noise.... Shouldnt this be like in the 90% range when you are only 3 feet from router? Seems weird......I am going to install Istumbler on my macbook to compare what the signals are saying right while they are in the same room as each other.....
Any suggestions with the MBP since I already have a brand new wireless card installed.....By the way, I highly recommend PROCARE, jumped me to the front of the line for repair.....
    Thanks

Have you installed the new security update 2007-009 that fixed my problem. Also is the airport extreme firmware up to date.

  • Wireless AP Signal strength

You may not need to replace or move the existing AP:
How many antennas does that AP have?
If the antenna(s) can be removed, replace them with higher gain antennas.
That may be all you need.
You may also add antenna extension cables, but let's see your response, first...

Hello all, Periodically I encounter customers wanting to install new access points or replace ones they already have because the signal from the old ones is insufficient. I have site survey tools that tell me what the signal strength is like from an existing AP but I run into problems with interference. Case in point is one client where the AP is on a wall that borders an office. Due to the interference from the wall, that signal is down by half in that office, and in the next office (each office being about 12ft. wide) there is no signal at all. What I am wondering is whether or not there is a tool that can determine a signal strength needed given a maximum output power, since most APs give the maximum dBm, to get a signal through the wall. I don't deal with wireless placement every day so maybe I am going about this all wrong. Some...
