Model A1586 (GSM) vs Model A1586 (CDMA).

Hi everybody,
I would like a clarification on Model A1586 (GSM) vs Model A1586 (CDMA). What is the difference and how can i specify that in the online order?
Does both models support both GSM and CDMA or not? I would like to use my phone to other EU countries so will my decision of GSM or CDMA affect coverage?
Thanks

Hi Peter,
thanks for your  reply but I was not referring to ordering the phone from the US and apple.com.
In addition I do know the difference between GSM and CDMA and do not need to use google on this one.
My question is simple. From Apple.ie store I can order either Model A1586 (GSM) or Model A1586 (CDMA).
However nowhere in the online site it is specified how to select the GSM or the CDMA model.
Also having used the online support chat from Apple they claimed that both models support both CDMA and GSM which sounded strange.
So becuase I am going to pay approx 700 Euros, I would not want to end up with a phone that does not support the networks intended to use within Europe.

  • Is the Iphone 5 model A1429 (CDMA) and model A1429 (GSM) the same phone?

Apple is inconsistent on their information for the iphone 5. One the LTE info site (http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/) it lists three different models, specifically showing that there is both a GSM and CDMA version of Model A1429.
However, on the iphone 5 shopping FAQs (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone) it specifically says:
Can I use an iPhone when traveling internationally?
iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S are both world phones, so you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you are a GSM or CDMA network customer, you can roam on GSM networks in 200 countries around the world. iPhone 4 for AT&T can also roam on other GSM networks around the world. iPhone 4 for Sprint will work in approximately 40 countries and iPhone 4 for Verizon Wireless will work in approximately 45 countries that use CDMA technology. Availability of LTE data on iPhone 5 varies in some countries and depends on carrier support for certain LTE radio frequencies. Contact your wireless carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.
As you can read in the bolded type above, the CDMA version of the phone will be capable of using GSM networks. Does this mean, for example, that an iphone purchased in Australia (LTE band 3 with Telstra) will be usable in the US (Sprint and Verizon LTE bands).
What I'm most interested in is using LTE in the US on an Australia purchased phone.

Hmmm. I just ran GeekBench here in Sydney and it has identified my A1429 iPhone 5 as a CDMA version. Whatever, it is running fine on LTE on the Telstra network here.
Is this just a glitch in GeekBench or is Apple really using the Verizon A1429 version interchangeably with the GSM-only A1429 as the world-phone?

  • Can i use a GSM sim on a CDMA iPhone 4S after a CDMA factory unlock?

I just got an iPhone 4S as a gift from my cousin in Canada. Upon trying to get a factory unlock for it i was informed that it is a CDMA phone. If unlocked can i use a GSM sim with it? Am in South Africa.

There is no way to "unlock" a CDMA iPhone. Only the sim slot can be officially unlocked, and that can only be authorized by the carrier the phone is locked to. None of the Canadian carriers will authorize such unless you are a current/former customer who used the phone on their network...obviously, not you. Thus, there is no way for you to get the sim slot unlocked. Send it back to your cousin & have him/her get the sim slot unlocked.

  • What is the meaning of iphone 4(GSM) and iphone 4 (CDMA)

I am confuse with this two option when Im trying to download ios 6 for my iphone, actually I had that one the GSM but still confusing with the difference....anyone can answer me, thanks

the difference is in what type of carrier you have. For exaple SPRINT is CDMA, versus ATT which is gsm.

  • Unlock Service only unlock GSM? How about CDMA?

Today, when I insert a UIM Card from China Telecom(a CDMA carrier) to the Sprint iPhone 5c (A1456, SIM-LOCKED), it shows the strong signal and the 3G logo, and I could see the new carrier's name correctly in the phone's setting.
Is this a universal phenomenon for a SIM-LOCKED phone when you insert a new carrier's SIM card it could recognize it correctly(Of course then the phone turn to the activate page)?
And I want to ask that since the phone could receive 3G data(CDMA 1X or Evdo) to activate the phone (through activation failed certainly), why does the unlock service only unlock the GSM part, how is the CDMA part?
Of course I know that GSM and CDMA are two different network type, and many people in this forum say that unlocking CDMA is complex and no carrier would do this. I am very confusing about this. For a Verizon iPhone and the strategy is 2023, it seems to be a global phone and it could use CDMA,WCDMA,CDMA2000 and FDD-LTE. But when you inquire the SN, it shoule be a LOCKED one. Whether it is locked or unlocked, I think the real part which decide the network it supports should be the activation strategy. So if the unlock activate strategy is 2023 like Verizon, it seems better.
I want to unlock the CDMA part so that I could use the new carrier's CDMA network even LTE. But it seems the phone would be a GSM phone, of course I won't unlock it. But we could see unlock service in eBay or Taobao that some businesses say they could unlock GSM+WCDMA ($150), GSM+WCDMA+CDMA2000($200), is it true?
And under the new unlock bill, is there any possibility to unlock the cdma part? or bypass the locked carrier to unlock phone(Since it's a legal action)?

I will, but I'd appreciate if if you stopped spreading false information.
Reality is that Verizon uses a SIM based CDMA network that allows BYOD of compatible unlocked devices with SIM slots such as iPhones from CDMA networks like Sprint and U.S. Cellular. Verizon DOES not maintain a whitelist of devices that are allowed on their network, any CDMA device with a SIM will work. Including iPhone(except the Verizon/Sprint 4 which did not have a SIM slot).
I'll ask again, please stop spreading false information. How could I be wrong if I put my mother's Verizon SIM in a non-jailbroken iPhone 5 from Sprint without calling Verizon or performing any other actions and it worked? Please explain this to me, if you're so insistent upon CDMA iPhones with SIM slots not being cross-compatible, then you should be more than happy to explain why.
Here's a video of a Sprint iPhone 5 that has not been modified or jailbroken in any way whatsoever other than Sprint unlocking it working on Verizon.

  • How can I buy a model A1586 in US?

I want to buy a A1586 iphone 6 because I wanna use TD-LET in another country. But the iphone 6 sale online is model A1549. How can I buy a A1586? Can I buy it in store?

Yes, I'm talking about a Apple Store in the US and yes I have the A1586 model. I'm not sure if the iPhone works at an GSM network in India, because I'm using it in europe.
This are the specifications from the apple store website from model A1586:
    Model A1586*
    CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
    UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
    TD-SCDMA 1900 (F), 2000 (A)
    GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
    FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29)
    TD-LTE (Bands 38, 39, 40, 41)

  • How to pick the iPhone 5 model (CDMA, GSM, ETC...) when buying it unlocked online?

    Hello,
I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 5 to be used with Virgin Mobile Canada. VMC uses CDMA network, and as some of you may know, iPhone 5 has 3 different models:
    GSM model A1428*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 4 and 17)
    CDMA model A1429*: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)
    GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)
So the first one, Model A1428 would not work with VMC i guess, right?
That leaves me with the other 2 models. The second one works with CDMA and GSM and LTE, so If i get this model, it should work on CDMA networks (Virgin Mobile) and GSM too (eg. Rogers), right? And LTE would work on both networks, right? (also whats the difference between the LTE bands? like what does it mean?)
So Virgin Mobile itself supplies customers with the A1429 model right (and so does Bell)? While Rogers supplied the A1428 one, right?
Finally, how do i PICK which model to buy? I mean when i go on apple.ca and "Buy iPhone", it doesnt ask to pick a model, so how do i specify which one to buy?
Thank you all (btw, please dont pay attention to my weird username as I once used this forum before and entered the topic in the username field, and it doesnt really give an option to change it in my profile, haha)
    Thanks again!

But i actually asked them, and they said that its fine to bring my own iPhone. I'm looking into a prepaid plan (that come with some data), so it shouldnt make a difference, because theyre gonna activate the sim card and ill go from there with top ups (so basically they wont even know what phone i'm using).
So anyway i asked them, and they said its ok. but i then thought of the whole cdma thing

  • CAD model of GSM/WCDMA phone

    Hi ppl,
I am doing a research as part of my diploma thesis on the effects of GSM/WCDMA RFR on the human body, especially the head.
I'd like to use real-life CAD models of phones in the simulation (instead of generic models) to better reflect real-life conditions, but of course I can't find them anywhere. I've tried to model the phone (N6120 classic) myself, but the |S11| and SWR parameters are far from being optimal
Does anyone know whom I should contact at Nokia to obtain these models? (one model would be plenty enough Also, any CAD format would do..
And I guess writing to Nokia support won't help in this matter.. someone please help..
    Thanks to everyone in advance!

  • Can I buy Model A1429 (GSM model) in Canada?

In apple's announce, New iPhone has 3 models, A1428 (GSM model) , A1429 (GSM model) , A1429 (CDMA model) .
A1428 model can use LTE on band 4 and band 17.
But I hardly use iPhone in Canada, wherease I can use iPhone in other countries (ex. UK, Germany, Singapore...)
So I want to buy A1429 model in Canada.
Can I buy Model A1429 (GSM model) in Canada?

The answer is no you can not Canada's cellphone providers uses the A1428 model only not the A1429 CDMA/GSM used  in the United States unless you are a (sprint) or a (Verizon) subscriber.

  • International Unlocked iPhone 6 A1586 for Verizon or AT&T

    Hi guys,
    This is the case:
I am about to purchase an iPhone 6 in China (Model A1586 CDMA Version). This phone supports all bands of 2G/3G/LTE that the US Versions (A1549 CDMA Version and A1459 GSM Version) support, according to http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/.
So, theoratically, it should work with both Verizon & AT&T.
However, still according to http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/, this model A1586 does not have AT&T or Verizon in its "Supported LTE Networks" section. Only Sprint is there. On the other hand, it does support the Chinese carriers with CDMA/LTE (counterpart of Verizon) and with WCDMA/LTE (counterpart of AT&T) according to http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/.
    So my question is:
Simply: Can I use the iPhone 6 A1586 purchased in China under Verizon or AT&T when I come to the United States?
Theoratically: Why does A1586 supports all the bands technically but does not have Verizon & AT&T in its "Supported LTE Networks" section?
    Some additional info:
I know that A1586 is also sold in the United States and is locked with Sprint. That is the reason that it does not work with AT&T/Verizon, but I do not know if that is the only reason.
The A1586 sold in China obviously need not to have a Sprint lock on it. So if the Sprint lock is the only reason, then I guess I can use the iPhone under AT&T or Verizon.
    P.s.:
Do not worry on locks. The Chinese laws prohibits phones to be locked with any carriers.
Do not worry on warranty. I know I can only repair the phone in the country I buy it. But I have to travel frequently between US and Asia.

Verizon won't activate phones not sold for use on on Verizon's network. I've heard reports that, if you have a Verizon SIM that's already active, you might be able to use the non-Verizon phone. However, I wouldn't count on it.

  • What are the different iPhone 5 model numbers?

What do the different model numbers mean for the iPhone 5?  I see some that start with an "A" and some that start with "MD"?  Which model is for what?

All iPhone 5 have both an A Model number and a MD Model number. The MD Model number is found in Settings App > General > About > Model.
    Here are some examples:
Model A1428 is the iPhone 5 primarily used by GMS networks in USA, Canada, supports LTE bands 4 (AWS) and 17 (700b MHz).
Model A1429 (CDMA model) Sprint and Verizon, Japan under KDDI, supports LTE bands 1 (2100 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz),  5 (850 MHz), 13 (700c MHz), and 25 (1900 MHz).
Model A1429 (GSM model) most GSM carriers overseas, supports LTE bands 1 (2100 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz), and 5 (850 MHz)

  • What is the iphone 5 model that I need?

I want to buy an iphone 5 in Switzerland, will it work in israel? If not what model will work in israel?

Perhaps you live in Israel, but according to a quick Google search, Israel is rapidly going GSM.  So, I do not believe 99% is CDMA.
To the OP.  Read this link.  Two of the 3 major carriers in Israel are GSM.

  • I bought an Iphone 5 (Carrier: Sprint / model A1249) and I want to use it in France. Can I without any problems?

    Hi everyone,
First, I want to apologize about my bad english, I'm french.
So today, I bought on Ebay an Iphone 5 64 Giga, Model A1249 MD668LL/A, and apparently simlocked. That's why the seller sold it with a R-sim6 cards.
Here is the information some IMEI website checker told me about it:
    Warrantly: Active
    Technical support: Active
    Resgistered Status: Yes
    Activated Status: Yes
    Purchase Date: Validated
    Sim Lock status: Locked
So, that's mean until I don't use the r-sim in it, I can't use my phone with  any other nanosim than the sprint one?
is they're any way to unlock my phone without this r-sim and legally?
I saw some website about unlocking directly your iphone 5, but it's a bit expensive. Is it legal? Can apple helped me about this?
    Thanks you.
    Alex.

It's False, The only carrier that don't provide GSM support is actually At&T, that's why a lot of people said in the USA it's the worst about travelling.
Verizon and Sprint support GSM network outside the country, but only the Verizon iphone are sold totally unlocked to any other carriers.
That's why some website sell some offer about Factory Unlock on Sprint iphone 5s
Here is the specs about network support:
    AT&T – GSM model A1428*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 4 and 17)
    Verizon & Sprint – CDMA model A1429*: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)
    European – GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)
As you can see, Verizon and Sprint models sold support both CDMA and GSM carrier, as said many times on the internet.
