Focus and zoom are separate functions you may be confusing the compound (Rotational and Linear) movement of the focus with the simple in/out linear movement of the lens barrel during Zoom. Referencing your statement: "If I switch to MF I can retract the zoom completely." are you rotating the focus ring  or  zoom ring when you do this? FYI total focus barrel distance on my same lens is 5/8". Also make sure that your zoom lock is not engaged it's a little slide switch on the side of the lens.
Lastly if you had AF enabled and then switch to MF the focus would be at it's last AF point that the camera told it to be which may or may not be fully retracted.
Hope this helps.
My lens does make some sounds during focus and during IS definetly not as quiet as my STM lenses.

  • MacBook Pro retina: Mid-range 13" or low-range 15"?

    Hi,
I'm a second-year university student looking to get the latest MacBook Pro retina (switching from a PC). I have been to the store and tried both - I am very torn between getting a mid-range 13" (I want the 256GB SSD) or a low-range 15". With the Apple care, student discounts and tax (15% here), the difference in price comes down to $700 CAD. I am not sure whether spending this extra cash is worth is as I do not do any graphic or hardcore programming work. I use my laptop mostly to type notes, read and watch movies & TV series. I should mention that I will not consider MacBook Air, it's too thin for my taste (I feel like I will easily drop it or break it haha). Here are some pros and cons I've came up with - I wish to get some insight from all of you who have had experience with MacBook Pros:
    13":
    Pros:
    1. About 1kg lighter in weight, the charger is also lighter than the one used for 15", so it will add up to be more than 1kg lighter --> more portable
    2. Longer battery life (though I'll most likely be carrying around the charger anyway, I will almost always have somewhere to plug at school)
    3. Cheaper ($700 CAD less than the 15")
    Cons:
    1. Smaller screen (I've never used a laptop under 15.4", I have no idea whether 13" is enough as a comfortable size to work with for long hours), maybe eyes will get tired more easily
    2. Since there is less screen space, when working on programs such as Microsoft Office with multiple documents, have to spend little extra time adjusting size of the window or display (zoom in and such)
    15":
    Pros:
    1. Bigger screen, which makes the "retina" part much more obvious and apparent --> nicer to watch videos and movies.
    2. 16GB RAM, can "keep its value longer(?)" - I lack of a better way to say this... it seems like these things get upgraded quickly, 8GB may be good today, and next year the standard becomes 16GB. And since RAM is something important for most people, getting a 16GB feels like my laptop can withstand its value longer
    Cons:
    1. HEAVIER - this is what I'm more concerned about (please share your experiences with 15" rMBP's weight ). I'm afraid that although it doesn't feel much lighter when I hold it, and it's probably not that heavy with just the rMBP in the backpack - the extra weight might show during exam times when I have to carry more books around.
    2. Price - Is the $700CAD worth it? Because the difference that I can really experience will probably be 1)the screen and 2) the RAM, since I only do ordinary business with my laptop.  I know what the extra money is worth it for those professional users out there given the higher specs of the processor and graphics card, but I probably won't feel anything, right?
         - but then, if the extra screen real estate can make me work more efficiently (share your experiences please, I would really like to hear them), and that it's not heavy, I do have the budget to pay the extra $700.
As you may be able to tell, I've done quite a lot of research, but I am still torn and don't know how to decide. I guess the biggest question is portability vs. extra screen space & retina experience. I would really appreciate if you could share your opinions and experiences! If you can convince me of which model to choose, I will be very grateful. I've been losing productivity for days just to think about this decision dilemma...
    Thanks in advance!
    Ellen

It is really a personnel choice. I myself would opt for the 15 inch because I consider the 13 inch has too small a screen and the 16 GB of memory is a plus.

  • Seeking mid-range HD camcorder compatible with iMac.

Just purchased a 27" iMac and love it! New to MAC. Looking to purchase a mid-range HD camcorder for vacation. Any suggestions on what brand camcorder to purchase. I was told to stay away from Sony due to software issues with MAC and iPhoto and Imovie. Suggestions would be appreciated.

I would suggest that you get a camcorder made by Sony, Canon, or Panasonic.
Get a camcorder that uses an SDHC card or a hard drive. Avoid DVD camcorders like the plague.
I like the AVCHD format, but camcorders that use the H.264 or iFrame formats can produce good results as well.
I would avoid miniDV unless you have a lot of miniDV already.
If you want to check out specific models, here is a link to Apple's camcorder compatibility list.

  • What's the best way to cut annoying mid-range frequencies?

Does anybody know how to eliminate/cut mid-range frequencies that cause the speakers to "buzz"? Hi-cut and low-cut filters don't help much.
    Thanks
    Anya

hi, anya, how is your cd going?
there are a number of reasons for spiked upper mids.
inferior conversion, inferior monitors, small square rooms, inferior mic/mic-pre.
i heard your original demos when you posted them here, so i'm guessing it's your speakers, as i didn't hear that much wrong with the demo over my monitors.
the region of frequencies you are refering to are what superior gear addresses.
check out the "airwindows plugin' by chrisj. (kagi-airwindows plug-ins)
he has some fee ones which i'm now using a lot.
his commercial ones are well priced.
i have noticed quite a sweetening of the "presence range", which is where your problem is, using his channel and channel eq.
i like his stuff and will buy some more soon.
also try sonalksis' eq, it's very sweet sounding and subtle.
the udder cause of "buzz" could be sub bass overdrive, ie: too much bass that your speakers cannot handle and is making them vibrate. this sort of bass boost does nother for your mix except subtract from its headroom/dynamics.
again, this is due, generally, to using headphones or small bookshelfs to mix on.
    best, david r.

  • Intermec Strengthens Printer Portfolio with New Mid-Range Label Printer

Last Thursday, we were excited to announce the PM23c, a new 2”mid-range industrial printing solution and an extension of Intermec’s PM43 and PM43c printers.
Launching at the "Future Technology Experience" show in Las Vegas, the PM23c is an all-metal barcode label printer primed for mission critical markets and applications such as airline passenger services, manufacturing, and retail, including product labeling and food traceability, where maximizing productivity drives results.
    Read on for more.

I like my Canon Pixma MX850. It is a network all-in-one, so it will work with any router, and it scans through the network as well as prints. The only slight hitch in setup is that it needs an initial USB connection to set up the network connection, but there has been no problems since then. I prefer a network printer to a USB printer, because it is made to work natively with a network connection, and you do not need to worry about compatibility with the print server, such as the one built into the Airport Express.
The only problem with it is that the price keeps going down since I bought it! However, you can save yourself a lot of grief if you stop shopping after you buy something.

  • Verizon's Samsung Odyssey - Mid-Range Status

WPCentral is reporting the the Samsung Odyssey will be a mid-range phone.

    1.2MP Front (720P video)
1GB RAM, 8GB internal, microSD expansion
2100mAh replaceable battery; no wireless charging
    MSM8960 Dual core 1.5 GHz
According to the chart in the Article, the Lumia 822 has better specs.  Though the Samsung has a better battery.
    Source: http://www.wpcentral.com/specs-verizon-samsung-odyssey-leak-confirming-mid-range

Bummed this is a WVGA phone. I was hoping this would be a repackaged S3, but nooo apparently Verizon doesn't want it's Windows Phones to compete with its already well selling Android base. Pretty sad that it's two months since WP8 release and Verizon still doesn't have a flagship device. Yes, I know there's the 8X but it just doesn't stack up as far as I'm concerned. That 16G storage is too limiting for those of us who like to rock.

  • Dirty mid-range frequency and very low vocal

I noticed this problem after I installed and began using Bose USB speakers on my Windows XP. In my iTunes, many of the songs have staticy mid-range frequency sound and vocals are very low and difficult to hear. These songs include songs that were ripped directly from marketed CDs or downloaded from iTunes Store. My equalizer is set to Flat and messing with the equalizer didn’t help as it made the songs even more staticy. I don’t have this problem on QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Realtime, nor on iPod. Only on iTunes. I want to use iTunes since I find it more convenient and easier to use than any other players that I know.
Can this be fixed? Please help.
    iTunes 7.1.1.5 Windows XP

btw, I'm using my built-in laptop speakers (Altec Lansing); so it's not a Bose thing.

  • Mid-range Graphics Card suggestion ?

Dear Kinect v2 users, can you suggest mit a mid-range Graphics Card that works out-of-the-box with the Kinect v2 ?
I do not care about specs too much, neither do i care if it's NVIDIA or ATI, but it should be silent enough (Office PC) and not too expensive (let's say below 200 €).
Thank you very much in advance.

If you lookup the minimum cards listed in the docs and compare them on the hardware review sites that should give you an idea of where they land in terms of performance. In the reviews they will typically provide others in the higher end range.

  • Why doesn't apple allow you to dumb down the mid range powerbook

I bought a MacBook, I really love this little thing, but I'm beginning to think that the lack of a dedicated graphics card is going to **** me off. I would readily upgrade to a MacBook Pro, but I would want the Mid Range 15" with the 256 graphics card. But I don't need 1 GB of ram, nor the 100GB hard drive. Why won't they let you dumb it down?
And on a side note, I have PB 1.33, and the only issue I have with it is the Airport was so stunted as to almost be useless, could barley see the Wireless router in my apt, from across the way. How is it with the new MacBook Pro?

To keep the sort of malware rather prevalent for Android devices off of your iPhone. Depending on what you need to download, though, you can probably find a third-party app that will do it. Since such apps keep their documents in their own sandbox, it helps protect the iPhone from being infected by malicious "documents".
    Regards.

  • How much does it cost to upgrade a mac book pro 2010 mid range?

I want to find how much upgrading Mac book pro mid range? Ideally a list of what can be upgraded and how much.....and i know apple can upgrade, i do not care about the cost or if it is worth it.... just want to know how much and what can be upgraded...

The performance bottleneck for your MBP is the hard drive.
You will see significant improvements in overal performance by upgrading the HD to a SSD.
Btw, Apple is not in the business of upgrading your existing MBP. Apple rather you buy a new MacBook Pro.
In all fairness to Apple, the 2011 MBP quad-core is almost twice as fast as the 2010 MBP dual-core for multi-core aware applications.
    Here are Mac benchmarks.

  • Which digital camera will accept a FD 35-70mm and a 80-200mm auto zoom lens?

Purchased T50 Canon camera 20+ years ago.  Barely used, but needs repair.  Also purchased  FD 35-70mm Canon zoom lens and 80-200mm auto zoom lens.  Which Canon digital camera will accept these lens?

FD series lenses are pre-EOS.  They don't auto-focus.
Canon started this line with the F-1 in 1971 and continued with them until around 1990 and they were phased out in favor of the EOS system.
You can find a list of bodies that use FD lenses here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_fd
I have a Canon AE-1 (still have it ... still works!) which uses FD lenses.

  • Best mid range camera for FCPX.

    Hi
My son has just completed his degree in media so is now looking for a decent camera to produce some example work on, he is also keep to use FCP X to do the editing on.
I have done a small amount of research and was going to get him the Panasonic V720 camera but there seems to be a lot of discussion around importing the video be either possible or just complicated work arounds
Can anyone either recommend a camera that can just be imported direct or say whether the Panasonic will import!?
    Thanks

I'm using its predecessor, the hcv707 - works like charme! 1080/50p with 28mbps - awesome (in your country: 60p)!
The other final candidate was some Sony, but this model had a smaller sensor.
The main disadvantage - if you you would call it - of the Panasonic: controls only via touchscreen. The better/pricier models (909) allow a manual turning of some 'ring' at the front of the device. So, e.g. switching focus while recording is a bit tricky with the 720, compared to the 2x pricier 909/929 .... but that is a more ... cinematographers nice-to-have.-
A completely diff. range of products are 'still cams with video' - the famous videoDSLRs, as Canon 550/600/650, or the Sony NEX (or Samsung NX) devices. The changable glasses allow high flexibility, you can start with a 'kit'-glas, later add speedy glasses (<f 1.8), or long lenses (animals), macro, etc etc .... = $$$$
in short: there's no 'can do it all'-cam.
It depends very much on your needs,
FCPX supports all actual AVCHD devices (and more).

  • What is the exact model number of a Mac Mini-mid 2011 Server?

My Mac Mini Server apple tells me is a Mid-2011. I saw somewhere the Mac Mini models have "5"  as the starting number in a 3 or 4 digit model number. Why is apple unable to give an exact model # of this "Mid-2011" model. Appreciate somebody to give an answer to this seeming "mystery". Thank you.

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-i7-2.0-mid-20 11-server-specs.html
Unclear on whether you are asking about the model identifier (Macmini5,3) or the Apple part number (MC936LL/A).
The model identifier can be found in "System Information". The Apple part number can be found on the serial number plate attached to the chassis.
